Abstract:Khovanov homology of a link and chromatic graph homology are known to be isomorphic in a range of homological gradings that depend on the girth of a graph. We discuss patterns shared by these two homology theories. In particular, we improve the bounds for the homological span of chromatic homology by Helme-Guizon, Przytycki and Rong. An explicit formula for the rank of the third chromatic homology group on the main diagonal is given and used to compute the corresponding Khovanov homology group and the fourth coefficient of the Jones polynomial for links with certain diagrams.

Abstract:In "Homfly polynomial via an invariant of colored plane graphs", Murakami, Ohtsuki, and Yamada provide a state-sum description of the level $n$ Jones polynomial of an oriented link in terms of a suitable braided monoidal category whose morphisms are $\mathbb{Q}[q,q^{-1}]$-linear combinations of oriented trivalent planar graphs, and give a corresponding description for the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. We extend this construction and express the Khovanov-Rozansky homology of an oriented link in terms of a combinatorially defined category whose morphisms are equivalence classes of formal complexes of (formal direct sums of shifted) oriented trivalent plane graphs. By working combinatorially, one avoids many of the computational difficulties involved in the matrix factorization computations of the original Khovanov-Rozansky formulation: one systematically uses combinatorial relations satisfied by these matrix factorizations to simplify the computation at a level that is easily handled. By using this technique, we are able to provide a computation of the level $n$ Khovanov-Rozansky invariant of the 2-strand braid link with $k$ crossings, for arbitrary $n$ and $k$, confirming and extending previous results and conjectural predictions by Anokhina-Morozov, Beliakova-Putyra-Wehrli, Carqueville-Murfet, Dolotin-Morozov, Gukov-Iqbal-Kozcaz-Vafa, Nizami-Munir-Sohail-Usman, and Rasmussen.

When the theories meet: Khovanov homology as Hochschild homology of links

Abstract:We show that Khovanov homology and Hochschild homology theories share common structure. In fact they overlap: Khovanov homology of a $(2,n)$-torus link can be interpreted as a Hochschild homology of the algebra underlining the Khovanov homology. In the classical case of Khovanov homology we prove the concrete connection. In the general case of Khovanov-Rozansky, $sl(n)$, homology and their deformations we conjecture the connection. The best framework to explore our ideas is to use a comultiplication-free version of Khovanov homology for graphs developed by L. Helme-Guizon and Y. Rong and extended here to to $\mathbb M$-reduced case, and to noncommutative algebras (in the case of a graph being a polygon). In this framework we prove that for any unital algebra $\A$ the Hochschild homology of $\A$ is isomorphic to graph homology over $\A$ of a polygon. We expect that this paper will encourage a flow of ideas in both directions between Hochschild/cyclic homology and Khovanov homology theories.

Abstract:We discuss links in thickened surfaces. We define the Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and the Steenrod square for the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. A surface means a closed oriented surface unless otherwise stated. Of course, a surface may or may not be the sphere. A thickened surface means a product manifold of a surface and the interval. A link in a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) means a submanifold of a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) which is diffeomorphic to a disjoint collection of circles. Our Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and our Steenrod square of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$ are stronger than the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. It is the first meaningful Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type of links in 3-manifolds other than the 3-sphere. We point out that our theory has a different feature in the torus case.

A Glimpse of the Khovanov Homology of T(2,n) Via Long Exact Sequence

Abstract:Khovanov homology is a powerful link invariant: a categorification of the Jones polynomial that enjoys a rich and beautiful algebraic structure. This homology theory has been extensively studied and it has become an ubiquitous topic in contemporary knot theory research. In the same spirit, the Kauffman skein relation, which allows to define the Kauffman bracket polynomial up to normalization of the unknot, can be categorified by means of a long exact sequence. In an expository style, in this article we present how to build Khovanov homology from the Kauffman bracket polynomial and construct its long exact sequence. Furthermore, we present a deviceful and practical way in which this long exact sequence can be used for the computation of the Khovanov homology of torus links of the type $T(2,n)$. This article serves as a partial translation of a Spanish paper to be published on occasion of the Encuentro Internacional de Matemáticas (International Meeting of Mathematics) to be celebrated at the Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla, Colombia in November 2023. This paper offers a first look into the world of Khovanov homology by constructing it from the Kauffman bracket polynomial, as it was first done by Oleg Viro. Moreover, it gives the reader references for further studies from leading experts such as D. Bar-Natan, M. Khovanov, S. Mukherjee, J. Przytycki, and A. Shumakovitch, among others. In particular, one of the main objectives in publishing this article (and this partial translation) is to popularize research in knot theory, more specifically on Khovanov homology in Colombia, and Latin-America in general, acting as a language bridge given that most of the literature is in English.

Abstract:It was proven by González-Meneses, Manchón and Silvero that the extreme Khovanov homology of a link diagram is isomorphic to the reduced (co)homology of the independence simplicial complex obtained from a bipartite circle graph constructed from the diagram. In this paper, we conjecture that this simplicial complex is always homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, its homotopy type, if not contractible, would be a link invariant (up to suspension), and it would imply that the extreme Khovanov homology of any link diagram does not contain torsion. We prove the conjecture in many special cases and find it convincing to generalize it to every circle graph (intersection graph of chords in a circle). In particular, we prove it for the families of cactus, outerplanar, permutation and non-nested graphs. Conversely, we also give a method for constructing a permutation graph whose independence simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to any given finite wedge of spheres. We also present some combinatorial results on the homotopy type of finite simplicial complexes and a theorem shedding light on previous results by Csorba, Nagel and Reiner, Jonsson and Barmak. We study the implications of our results to knot theory; more precisely, we compute the real-extreme Khovanov homology of torus links T(3, q) and obtain examples of H-thick knots whose extreme Khovanov homology groups are separated either by one or two gaps as long as desired.

Abstract:We put a new spin on Khovanov--Rozansky homology. That is, we equip $\Lambda^n$-colored $\mathfrak{sl}_{2n}$ Khovanov--Rozansky homology with an involution whose $\pm 1$-eigenspaces are link invariants. When $n=1,2,3$ (and assuming technical conjectures for $n \geq 4$), we prove that this refined invariant categorifies the spin-colored $\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1}$ quantum link polynomial. Along the way, we partially develop the theory of quantum $\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1}$ webs and make contact with $\iota$quantum groups.

Abstract:The Turaev surface of a link diagram D is a closed, oriented surface constructed from a cobordism between the all-A and all-B Kauffman states of D. The Turaev genus of a link L is the minimum genus of the Turaev surface of any diagram D of L. A link is alternating if and only if its Turaev genus is zero, and so one can view Turaev genus one links as being close to alternating links. In this paper, we study the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link in the first and last two polynomial gradings where the homology is nontrivial. We show that a particular summand in the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link is trivial. This trivial summand leads to a computation of the Rasmussen s invariant and to bounds on the smooth four genus for certain Turaev genus one knots.

Discrete Morse Theory for Khovanov Homology

Abstract:The standard methods for calculating Khovanov homology rely either on long exact/spectral sequences or on the algorithmic "divide and conquer" approach developed by Bar-Natan. In this paper, we employ an alternative and arguably simpler tool, discrete Morse theory, which is new in the context of knot homologies. The method is applied for 2- and 3-torus braids in Bar-Natan's dotted cobordism category, where Khovanov complexes of tangles live. This grants a recursive description of the complexes of 2- and 3-torus braids yielding an inductive result on integral Khovanov homology of links containing those braids. The result, accompanied with some computer data, advances the recent progress on a conjecture by Przytycki and Sazdanović which claims that closures of 3-braids only have 2-torsion in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce a multiparameter deformation of the triply‐graded Khovanov–Rozansky homology of links colored by one‐column Young diagrams, generalizing the “‐ified” link homology of Gorsky–Hogancamp and work of Cautis–Lauda–Sussan. For each link component, the natural set of deformation parameters corresponds to interpolation coordinates on the Hilbert scheme of the plane. We extend our deformed link homology theory to braids by introducing a monoidal dg 2‐category of curved complexes of type A singular Soergel bimodules. Using this framework, we promote to the curved setting the categorical colored skein relation from our recent joint work and also the notion of splitting map for the colored full twists on two strands. As applications, we compute the invariants of colored Hopf links in terms of ideals generated by Haiman determinants and use these results to establish general link splitting properties for our deformed, colored, triply‐graded link homology. Informed by this, we formulate several conjectures that have implications for the relation between (colored) Khovanov–Rozansky homology and Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:We show that the order of torsion homology classes in Bar-Natan deformation of Khovanov homology is a lower bound for the unknotting number. We give examples of knots that this is a better lower bound than |s(K)/2|, where s(K) is the Rasmussen s invariant defined by the Bar-Natan spectral sequence.

Abstract:We use involutive Heegaard Floer homology to extend the Ozsváth-Szabó branched double cover spectral sequence relating a version of Khovanov homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of branched double covers. Our main tools are Lipshitz, Ozsváth, and Thurston's reconstruction of the Ozsváth-Szabó spectral sequence using bordered Floer homology and Hendricks and Lipshitz's surgery exact triangle in involutive bordered Floer homology.

Abstract:Cobordisms are naturally bigraded and we show that this grading extends to Khovanov homology, making it a triply graded theory. Although the new grading does not make the homology a stronger invariant, it can be used to show that odd Khovanov homology is multiplicative with respect to disjoint unions and connected sums of links; same results hold for the generalized Khovanov homology defined by the author in his previous work. We also examine the module structure on both odd and even Khovanov homology, in particular computing the effect of sliding a basepoint through a crossing on the integral homology.
