Abstract:The basic notion of how topoi can be utilized in physics is presented here. Topos and category theory serve as valuable tools which extend our ordinary set-theoretical conceptions, can further the study of quantum logic and give rise to new and 'neo-realistic' descriptions of quantum physics, i.e. make possible the construction of a general scheme for quantum physics, which 'looks like' the classical one. A novel way of writing theories of physics, by representing a formal language of a physical system, into an appropriate topos, is analyzed here. This novel approach is initiated by C.J. Isham and A. Doering and the major part of this paper comes from there; however there has been an effort in simplifying the basic ideas and do this work accessible to 'less experts' of the field. A minor, but not less important, part of this paper is devoted to resuming, in a concise way the background knowledge of logic, quantum logic and category theory, that is necessary for anyone who wishes to follow the whole topos approach.

Abstract:What is the role of topos theory in the topos models for quantum theory as used by Isham, Butterfield, Doring, Heunen, Landsman, Spitters and others? In other words, what is the interplay between physical motivation for the models and the mathematical framework used in these models? Concretely, we show that the presheaf topos model of Butterfield, Isham and Doring resembles classical physics when viewed from the internal language of the presheaf topos, similar to the copresheaf topos model of Heunen, Landsman and Spitters. Both the presheaf and copresheaf models provide a `quantum logic' in the form of a complete Heyting algebra. Although these algebras are natural from a topos theoretic stance, we seek a physical interpretation for the logical operations. Finally, we investigate dynamics. In particular we describe how an automorphism on the operator algebra induces a homeomorphism (or isomorphism of locales) on the associated state spaces of the topos models, and how elementary propositions and truth values transform under the action of this homeomorphism. Also with dynamics the focus is on the internal perspective of the topos.

Abstract:Topos theory has been suggested by Döring and Isham as an alternative mathematical structure with which to formulate physical theories. In particular, the topos approach suggests a radical new way of thinking about what a theory of physics is and what its conceptual framework looks like. The motivation of using topos theory to express quantum theory lies in the desire to overcome certain interpretational problems inherent in the standard formulation of the theory. In particular, the topos reformulation of quantum theory overcomes the instrumentalist/Copenhagen interpretation thereby rendering the theory more realist. In the process one ends up with a multivalued/intuitionistic logic rather than a Boolean logic. In this article we shall review some of these developments.

Abstract:The topos approach to the formulation of physical theories includes a new form of quantum logic. We present this topos quantum logic, including some new results, and compare it to standard quantum logic, all with an eye to conceptual issues. In particular, we show that topos quantum logic is distributive, multi-valued, contextual and intuitionistic. It incorporates superposition without being based on linear structures, has a built-in form of coarse-graining which automatically avoids interpretational problems usually associated with the conjunction of propositions about incompatible physical quantities, and provides a material implication that is lacking from standard quantum logic. Importantly, topos quantum logic comes with a clear geometrical underpinning. The representation of pure states and truth-value assignments are discussed. It is briefly shown how mixed states fit into this approach.

Abstract:We give a theoretical and applicable framework for dealing with real-world phenomena. Joining pointwise and pointfree notions in BISH, natural topology gives a faithful idea of important concepts and results in intuitionism. Natural topology is well-suited for practical and computational purposes. We give several examples relevant for applied mathematics, such as the decision-support system Hawk-Eye (used in professional tennis), and various real-number representations. We compare CLASS, INT, RUSS, BISH and formal topology. There are links with physics, regarding the topological character of our physical universe. Translation of intuitionistic results to BISH is facilitated by our framework, using transfinite countable-ordinal induction in Brouwer's style. We study quotients of Baire space, and obtain constructive metrizability of star-finitary spaces. Silva spaces arise as example of non-metrizable natural spaces. Finally we discuss the role of Church's Thesis in physics.

Abstract:This survey aims to provide a guide to the literature on topological 4-manifolds. Foundational theorems on 4-manifolds are stated, especially in the topological category. Precise references are given, with indications of the strategies employed in the proofs. Where appropriate we give statements for manifolds of all dimensions. Many intuitively plausible theorems which are standard results in differential topology are either extraordinarily deep results in the topological category, are open, or are known to be false. Hence one must proceed with caution. This book seeks to help 4-manifold topologists navigate potential pitfalls, and to apply the many powerful results that do exist with confidence.

Abstract:This paper introduces the Quantum Contextual Topos (QCT), a novel framework that extends traditional quantum logic by embedding contextual elements within a topos-theoretic structure. This framework seeks to provide a classically-obedient tool for exploring the logical foundations of quantum mechanics. The QCT framework aims to address the limitations of classical quantum logic, particularly its challenges in capturing the dynamic and contextual nature of quantum phenomena. By integrating modal operators and classical propositional logic within a topos structure, the QCT offers a unified approach to modeling quantum systems. The main result of this work is demonstrating that the internal logic of QCT corresponds to a form of classical propositional polymodal logic. We do this by generalizing Stone's Representation Theorem for a specific case of polymodal algebras and their underlying Stone Spaces.

We pose the problem if the extension of the principle of solidarity to all interactions can impose to consider all variables as dynamic.

Abstract:A thought experiment is formulated to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity in a topological manner. An analysis of the interactions in Nature is then presented. The universal ground state of the constructed theory derives from the cyclic properties ($S^1$ homotopy) of the topological manifold $Q=2T^3\oplus 3S^1\times S^2$ which has 23 intrinsic degrees of freedom, discrete $Z_3$ and $Z_2\times Z_3$ internal groups, an SU(5) or SO(10) gauge group, and leads to an anomalous U(1) symmetry on a lattice. These properties can in principle reproduce the standard model with a stable proton. The general equation of motion for the unified theory is derived up to the Planck energy and leads to a Higgs field with possible inflation. The thermodynamic properties of $Q$ are discussed and yield a consistent amplitude for the cosmic microwave background fluctuations. The manifold $Q$ possesses internal energy scales which are independent of the field theory defined on it, but which constrain the predicted mass hierarchy of such theories. In particular the electron and its neutrino are identified as particle ground states and their masses are predicted. The mass of the electron agrees very well with observations. A heuristic argument for the occurrence and magnitude of CP violation is given. Future extensions of the presented framework are discussed.

Abstract:How does one formalize the structure of structures necessary for the foundations of physics? This work is an attempt at conceptualizing the metaphysics of pregeometric structures, upon which new and existing notions of quantum geometry may find a foundation. We discuss the philosophy of pregeometric structures due to Wheeler, Leibniz as well as modern manifestations in topos theory. We draw attention to evidence suggesting that the framework of formal language, in particular, homotopy type theory, provides the conceptual building blocks for a theory of pregeometry. This work is largely a synthesis of ideas that serve as a precursor for conceptualizing the notion of space in physical theories. In particular, the approach we espouse is based on a constructivist philosophy, wherein ``structureless structures'' are syntactic types realizing formal proofs and programs. Spaces and algebras relevant to physical theories are modeled as type-theoretic routines constructed from compositional rules of a formal language. This offers the remarkable possibility of taxonomizing distinct notions of geometry using a common theoretical framework. In particular, this perspective addresses the crucial issue of how spatiality may be realized in models that link formal computation to physics, such as the Wolfram model.

Abstract:This is the first of a series of papers that we intend to publish about the epistemology of fundamental physics in its current state. One of the main objectives of these papers is to improve our understanding of fundamental physics (and modern physics in particular) from an epistemological and interpretative perspective (i.e. versus formal perspective). Another main objective is to investigate and assess the merit of searching for a unified physical theory (the so-called ``theory of everything'') considering the fact that contemporary physics is a collection of theories created and developed by different individuals and groups of scientists in different eras of history reflecting different levels of scientific, philosophical and epistemological development and dealing with largely separate physical phenomena and hence such unification may mean ``stitching together'' an inhomogeneous collection of theoretical structures which may be clumsy (if not impossible) at least from an epistemological viewpoint.

Abstract:Many introductions to homotopy type theory and the univalence axiom gloss over the semantics of this new formal system in traditional set-based foundations. This expository article, written as lecture notes to accompany a 3-part mini course delivered at the Logic and Higher Structures workshop at CIRM-Luminy, attempts to survey the state of the art, first presenting Voevodsky's simplicial model of univalent foundations and then touring Shulman's vast generalization, which provides an interpretation of homotopy type theory with strict univalent universes in any $\infty$-topos. As we will explain, this achievement was the product of a community effort to abstract and streamline the original arguments as well as develop new lines of reasoning.

Abstract:The general aim of this paper is i) to argue for the feasibility and fruitfulness of the balance between the phenomenological method seeking intuitive evidence and the axiomatic-deductive method and ii) the importance of mutual understanding between philosophy and mathematics and of cultivating an historical self-awareness of their common source in Greek philosophy. To this end we show how Aristotle's theory of \emph{sunekhês, apeiron} and \emph{topos} as well as their related notions can be given a rigorous interpretation in terms of modern topology and geometry as well as category theory. This is facilated by the fact that in Aristotle himself we already find a good balance between intuition and formal logic. We also show how these powerful Aristotelian intuitions and concepts are found incarnated in diverse domains of modern mathematics.

Abstract:We study geometry and topology as complementary and dual aspects of the mathematical space. The same is used to get a better understanding of the Cosmological Constant. Having failed so far to include gravity in a proper unified framework with the other three fundamental gauge forces, we are now faced with an additional unwanted fifth force of repulsion, also envisaged as the Dark Energy problem. How does one understand this 3+1+1 fundamental force dilemma? We introduce here a novel idea of the Fundamental Forces. This will give us an additional and an all-encompassing way of classifying these five fundamental forces in a consistent manner and thereby strengthen the geometry-topology complementarity concept. This also helps us to understand as to what one actually means when substituting ${g_{\mu \nu}} = {\eta_{\mu \nu}} + {h_{\mu \nu}}$ with the last term being "small" in General Relativity. This provides an understanding of the generic relationship and the complementarity of the geometric and the topological structures which is then formalized as a basic theorem enabling us to understand the underlying connection between the physical reality and the pure mathematical structures.
A Comparison of Two Topos-Theoretic Approaches to Quantum Theory

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to compare the two topos-theoretic approaches to quantum mechanics that may be found in the literature to date. The first approach, which we will call the contravariant approach, was originally proposed by Isham and Butterfield, and was later extended by Doering and Isham. The second approach, which we will call the covariant approach, was developed by Heunen, Landsman and Spitters. Motivated by coarse-graining and the Kochen-Specker theorem, the contravariant approach uses the topos of presheaves on a specific context category, defined as the poset of commutative von Neumann subalgebras of some given von Neumann algebra. In particular, the approach uses the spectral presheaf. The intuitionistic logic of this approach is given by the (complete) Heyting algebra of closed open subob jects of the spectral presheaf. We show that this Heyting algebra is, in a natural way, a locale in the ambient topos, and compare this locale with the internal Gelfand spectrum of the covariant approach. In the covariant approach, a non-commutative C*-algebra (in the topos Set) defines a commutative C*-algebra internal to the topos of covariant functors from the context category to the category of sets. We give an explicit description of the internal Gelfand spectrum of this commutative C*-algebra, from which it follows that the external spectrum is spatial. Using the daseinisation of self-adjoint operators from the contravariant approach, we give a new definition of the daseinisation arrow in the covariant approach and compare it with the original version. States and state-proposition pairing in both approaches are compared. We also investigate the physical interpretation of the covariant approach.
