Abstract:The goal of this paper is to explain how basic properties of perverse sheaves sometimes translate via Riemann-Hilbert correspondences (in both characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$) to highly non-trivial properties of singularities, especially their local cohomology. Along the way, we develop a theory of perverse $\mathbf{F}_p$-sheaves on varieties in characteristic $p$, expanding on previous work by various authors, and including a strong version of the Artin vanishing theorem.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a topologically stratified space, $p$ be any perversity on $X$, and $k$ be a field. We show that the category of $p$-perverse sheaves on $X$, constructible with respect to the stratification and with coefficients in $k$, is equivalent to the category of finite-dimensional modules over a finite-dimensional algebra if and only if $X$ has finitely many strata and the same holds for the category of local systems on each of these. The main component in the proof is a construction of projective covers for simple perverse sheaves.

Abstract:Let $Q$ be a finite quiver without loops and $\mathcal{Q}_{\alpha}$ be the Lusztig category for any dimension vector $\alpha$. The purpose of this paper is to prove that all Frobenius eigenvalues of the $i$-th cohomology $\mathcal{H}^i(\mathcal{L})|_x$ for a simple perverse sheaf $\mathcal{L}\in \mathcal{Q}_{\alpha}$ and $x\in \mathbb{E}_{\alpha}^{F^n}=\mathbb{E}_{\alpha}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n})$ are equal to $(\sqrt{q^n})^{i}$ as a conjecture given by Schiffmann (\cite{Schiffmann2}). As an application, we prove the existence of a class of Hall polynomials.

Abstract:For a complex reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with Cartan subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}$ and Weyl group $W$ we consider the category $\text{Perv}(W \backslash \mathfrak{h})$ of perverse sheaves on $W \backslash \mathfrak{h}$ smooth w.r.t. the natural stratification. We construct a category $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}}$ such that $\text{Perv}(W\backslash \mathfrak{h})$ is identified with the category of functors from $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}}$ to vector spaces. Objects of $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}}$ are labelled by standard parabolic subalgebras in $\mathfrak{g}$. It has morphisms analogous to the operations of parabolic induction (Eisenstein series) and restriction (constant term) of automorphic forms. In particular, the Langlands formula for the constant term of an Eisenstein series has a counterpart in the form of an identity in $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}}$. We define $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}}$ as the category of $W$-invariants (in an appropriate sense) in the category $Q$ describing perverse sheaves on $\mathfrak{h}$ smooth w.r.t. the root arrangement. This matches, in an interesting way, the definition of $W \backslash \mathfrak{h}$ itself as the spectrum of the algebra of $W$-invariants.

Abstract:We show that on any Noetherian $F$-finite $\mathbb{F}_p$-scheme, there is an anti-equivalence of categories between Cartier crystals and étale perverse $\mathbb{F}_p$-sheaves, commuting with derived proper pushforwards. We use this duality to construct an upper shriek functor for Cartier crystals, and give new proofs of Kashiwara's equivalence and the finite length of Cartier crystals. Finally, we deduce a generic vanishing statement for perverse $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$-sheaves on abelian varieties of characteristic $p > 0$, reminiscent of the characteristic zero and $l$-adic statements.

Perverse sheaves on symmetric products of the plane

Abstract:For any field $k$, we give an algebraic description of the category $\mathrm{Perv}_\mathscr{S}(S^n (\mathbb{C}^2),k)$ of perverse sheaves on the $n$-fold symmetric product of the plane $S^n(\mathbb{C}^2)$ constructible with respect to its natural stratification and with coefficients in $k$. In particular, we show that it is equivalent to the category of modules over a new algebra that is closely related to the Schur algebra. As part of our description we obtain an analogue of modular Springer theory for the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(\mathbb{C}^2)$ of $n$ points in the plane with its Hilbert-Chow morphism.

Abstract:We show that the perverse t-structure induces a t-structure on the category $\mathcal{D}^A(S,\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ of Artin $\ell$-adic complexes when $S$ is an excellent scheme of dimension less than $2$ and provide a counter-example in dimension $3$. The heart $\mathrm{Perv}^A(S,\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ of this t-structure can be described explicitly in terms of representations in the case of $1$-dimensional schemes. When $S$ is of finite type over a finite field, we also construct a perverse homotopy t-structure over $\mathcal{D}^A(S,\mathbb{Q}_\ell)$ and show that it is the best possible approximation of the perverse t-structure. We describe the simple objects of its heart $\mathrm{Perv}^A(S,\mathbb{Q}_\ell)^\#$ and show that the weightless truncation functor $\omega^0$ is t-exact. We also show that the weightless intersection complex $EC_S=\omega^0 IC_S$ is a simple Artin homotopy perverse sheaf. If $S$ is a surface, it is also a perverse sheaf but it need not be simple in the category of perverse sheaves.

General multiple Dirichlet series from perverse sheaves

Abstract:We give an axiomatic characterization of multiple Dirichlet series over the function field $\mathbb F_q(T)$, generalizing a set of axioms given by Diaconu and Pasol. The key axiom, relating the coefficients at prime powers to sums of the coefficients, formalizes an observation of Chinta. The existence of multiple Dirichlet series satisfying these axioms is proved by exhibiting the coefficients as trace functions of explicit perverse sheaves and using properties of perverse sheaves. The multiple Dirichlet series defined this way include, as special cases, many that have appeared previously in the literature.

On the Equivariant Derived Category of Perverse Sheaves

Abstract:In this paper we extend Beilinson's realization formalism for triangulated categories and filtered triangulated categories to a pseudofunctorial and pseudonatural setting. As a consequence we prove an equivariant version of Beilinson's Theorem: for any algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ and for any $G$-variety $X$, there is an equivalence of categories $D_G^b(X; \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}) \simeq D_G^b(\mathbf{Perv}(X;\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}))$ where $\ell$ is an integer prime coprime to the characteristic of $K$. We also show that the equivariant analogues of the other non-$D$-module aspects of Beilinson's Theorem hold in the equivariant case.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Lusztig on a microlocal characterization of his perverse sheaves. For any finite quiver without loops, an equivariant simple perverse sheaf on the variety of quiver representations is a Lusztig's perverse sheaf if and only if its singular support is contained in Lusztig's Lagrangian variety, that is, the variety of nilpotent representations of the preprojective algebra of the quiver.

Abstract:We prove that the length function for perverse sheaves and algebraic regular holonomic D-modules on a smooth complex algebraic variety Y is an absolute Q-constructible function. One consequence is: for "any" fixed natural (derived) functor F between constructible complexes or perverse sheaves on two smooth varieties X and Y, the loci of rank one local systems L on X whose image F(L) has prescribed length are Zariski constructible subsets defined over Q, obtained from finitely many torsion-translated complex affine algebraic subtori of the moduli of rank one local systems via a finite sequence of taking union, intersection, and complement.

Abstract:Inspired by the works of Rickard on splendid equivalences [9] and of Chuang and Rouquier on perverse equivalences [6], we are here interested in the combination of both, i.e. a splendid perverse equivalence. This is naturally the right framework to understand the relations between global and local perverse equivalences between blocks of finite groups, as a splendid equivalence induces local derived equivalences via the Brauer functor. We prove that under certain conditions, we have an equivalence between a perverse equivalence between the homotopy category of p-permutation modules and local derived perverse equivalences, in the case of abelian defect groups.

Abstract:In this article we address the length of perverse sheaves arising as direct images of rank one local systems on complements of hyperplane arrangements. In the case of a cone over an essential line arrangement with at most triple points, we provide combinatorial formulas for these lengths. As by-products, we also obtain in this case combinatorial formulas for the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of rank one local systems on the complement with same monodromy around the planes.

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Nonnegativity of signed Euler characteristics of moduli of curves and abelian varieties

Abstract:Given a perverse sheaf on the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties or the moduli stack of smooth curves with n marked points over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the (orbifold) Euler characteristic is nonnegative. For constant coefficients, this follows immediately from formulas of Harer-Zagier and Harder. Our proof is different and in the case of abelian varieties uses log Dubson-Kashiwara plus the fact that Hodge bundles are nef. For curves, we require an additional inequality established using Beilinson's gluing construction. The first main result is shown to be false in positive characteristic.

Abstract:In recent work, Graham has constructed a variety with a map to the nilpotent cone which is similar in some ways to the Springer resolution. One aspect in which Graham's map differs is that it is not in general an isomorphism over the principal orbit, but rather the universal covering map. This map gives rise to a certain semisimple perverse sheaf on the nilpotent cone, and we discuss here the problem of describing the summands of this perverse sheaf. For type $A_n$, a key tool is a known combinatorial description of an affine paving of Springer fibers.
