Abstract:The purpose of this experiment was to research the influence of TiMn2 ,TiAl,and Ti on hydrogen storage properties of Mg2 FeH 6 system,by using of hydrogen storage performance tester and Netzch STA 449F3 thermalanalyser.The results of TPD and isothermal hydrogen desorption test indicate that TiMn2/TiAl/Ti-doped and unalloyed Mg2 FeH 6 have the similar desorption kinetics of the hydrogen storage.The reaction rate of doped Mg2 FeH 6 was a little higher,but not much.The above catalyst can decrease the endothermic peak tem-perature about 27 ℃.And the catalytic performance of TiMn2 was the best,pure Ti was the better,TiAl was the worst.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of a Mg2FeH6–MgH2 composite by in situ transmission electron microscopy is investigated. By setting up the optimal conditions to minimize electron‐beam‐induced Mg oxidation and dehydrogenation, hydrogen release process is imaged and thoroughly characterized, and nanostructuring of Fe clusters in Mg metal is observed. Furthermore, enhanced desorption kinetics of MgH2 induced by Fe catalytic effect is confirmed. Herein, real‐time observations of dehydrogenation of a Mg2FeH6–MgH2 composite by means of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with advanced spatial (≈0.8 Å) and temporal (25 frames s−1) resolution are reported. Careful control and systematic variations of the reaction temperature and electron dose rate enable detailed and direct visualization of the characteristic decomposition of Mg2FeH6 into Mg and Fe, which occurs on the nanometer scale under optimal experimental conditions defined to minimize the electron‐beam‐driven Mg oxidation and dehydrogenation that take place in TEM. First, the formation of nanostructured fine Fe clusters in Mg metal and their growth via coalescence during dehydrogenation are verified. Additionally, fine monitoring of the in situ diffraction patterns acquired during decomposition of the composite allows separate evaluations of the desorption kinetics of the two coexisting phases, which confirm the synergetic dehydrogenation of this dual‐phase system. It is envisioned that these findings will provide useful guidelines for reducing the gaps between nanoscale and bulk‐scale research and designing hydrogen sorption conditions to enable efficient operation of a solid‐state hydrogen storage system.

Abstract:In the field of metal hydride hydrogen storage, Mg 2 NiH 4 is favoured for its high hydrogen storage capacity, fast hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics, and unique electronic structure. The diversity of polymorphic Mg 2 NiH 4 and complexity in phase transformation pose challenges on study of controllable preparation, structural analysis and hydrogen storage properties. Besides, one of the major factors plaguing metal hydride applications is air stability. In this work, an in-depth analysis of the Mg 2 NiH 4 isomers was conducted by examining their thermodynamic, electrical, and microstructural differences. Differs from other metal hydrides, it is astonishing that the onset dehydrogenation temperature of Mg 2 NiH 4 decreases after air exposure. This phenomenon, which was called self-evolution dehydrogenation of Mg 2 NiH 4 , occurred in both the high and low temperature phases of Mg 2 NiH 4 . The main components of the surface passivation layer resulting from air exposure of polymorphic Mg 2 NiH 4 were clarified in this work. Self-evolution dehydrogenation can be attributed to the electronic structure variation of Ni/Ni(OH) 2 and Ni/NiO in the passivation layer. Our findings provide some insights on phase composition determination of multi-metal hydrides. Furthermore, the findings also benefit for design of high-active and oxidation-resistant metal hydrides.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride has great potential as a solid hydrogen (H) storage material because of its high H storage capacity of 7.6 wt%. However, its slow hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics and the high temperature of 300 $^\circ$C required for decomposition are major obstacles to small-scale applications such as automobiles. The local electronic structure of interstitial H in MgH$_2$ is an important fundamental knowledge in solving this problem, which has been studied mainly based on density functional theory (DFT). However, few experimental studies have been performed to assess the results of DFT calculations. We have therefore introduced muon (Mu) as pseudo-H into MgH$_2$ and investigated the corresponding interstitial H states by analyzing their electronic and dynamical properties in detail. As a result, we observed multiple Mu states similar to those observed in wide-gap oxides, and found that their electronic states can be attributed to relaxed-excited states associated with donor/acceptor levels predicted by the recently proposed "ambipolarity model". This provides an indirect support for the DFT calculations on which the model is based via the donor/acceptor levels. An important implication of the muon results for improved hydrogen kinetics is that dehydrogenation, serving as a $reduction$ for hydrides, stabilizes the interstitial H$^-$ state.

Thermodynamic Destabilization Of Magnesium Hydride Using Mg-Based Solid Solution Alloys

Abstract:Thermodynamic destabilization of magnesium hydride is a difficult task that has challenged researchers of metal hydrides for decades. In this work, solid solution alloys of magnesium were exploited as a way to destabilize magnesium hydride thermodynamically. Various elements were alloyed with magnesium to form solid solutions, including: indium (In), aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), and zinc (Zn). Thermodynamic properties of the reactions between the magnesium solid solution alloys and hydrogen were investigated. Equilibrium pressures were determined by pressure-composition-isothermal (PCI) measurements, showing that all the solid solution alloys that were investigated in this work have higher equilibrium hydrogen pressures than that of pure magnesium. Compared to magnesium hydride, the enthalpy (Delta H) of decomposition to form hydrogen and the magnesium alloy can be reduced from 78.60 kJ/(mol H-2) to 69.04 kJ/(mol H-2), and the temperature of 1 bar hydrogen pressure can be reduced to 262.33 degrees C, from 282.78 degrees C, for the decomposition of pure magnesium hydride. Further, in situ XRD analysis confirmed that magnesium solid solutions were indeed formed after the dehydrogenation of high-energy ball-milled MgH2 with the addition of the solute element(s). XRD results also indicated that intermetallic phases of Mg with the solute elements were present along with MgH2 in the rehydrogenated magnesium solid solution alloys, providing a reversible hydrogen absorption/desorption reaction pathway. However, the alloys were shown to have lower hydrogen storage capacity than that of pure MgH2.

Abstract:Under the catalytic action of ZrFe1.4Cr0.6, magnesium was hydrided into nanostructured MgH2 and γ-MgH2 directly by reaction ball-milling. The formation and decomposition behaviors of the hydrided phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis (TGA and DSC). The hydrided phases thus formed possess excellent dehydriding kinetics. Based on the calculation of local activation energy, the decomposition mechanism of the hydrided phases was probed.

Abstract:The study of hydrogen storage properties of Mg-based thin films is of interest due to their unique composition, interface, crystallinity, and high potential for use in hydrogen-storage systems. Alloying Mg with Al leads to the destabilization of the magnesium hydride reducing the heat of reaction, increases the nucleation rate, and decreases the dehydriding temperature. The purpose of our study is to reveal the role of the aluminum atom addition in hydrogen adsorption and accumulation in the Mg-H solid solution. Ab initio calculations of aluminum and hydrogen binding energies in magnesium were carried out in the framework of density functional theory. Hydrogen distribution and accumulation in Mg and Mg-10%Al thin films were experimentally studied by the method of glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy and using a hydrogen analyzer, respectively. It was found that a hydrogen distribution gradient is observed in the Mg-10%Al coating, with more hydrogen on the surface and less in the bulk. Moreover, the hydrogen concentration in the Mg-10%Al is lower compared to Mg. This can be explained by the lower hydrogen binding energy in the magnesium-aluminum system compared with pure magnesium.

Abstract:Synchrotron based in situ x-ray diffraction measurements and an analysis of the dehydrogenation of MgH2 and MgH2 with Ti-based additives, including TiH2 and TiMn2, are presented. γ-MgH2 to β-MgH2 phase transformation in ball milled MgH2 samples was observed prior to the dehydrogenation reaction. During the dehydrogenation of MgH2 there were no significant phase transformations observed of the additives. These Ti-based additives functioned as catalysts during the dehydrogenation process resulting in lower temperature of dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Efforts to thermodynamically destabilize magnesium hydride (MgH2), so that it can be used for practical hydrogen storage applications, have been a difficult challenge that has eluded scientists for decades. This letter reports that MgH2 can indeed be destabilized by forming solid solution alloys of magnesium with group III and IVB elements, such as indium. Results of this research showed that the equilibrium hydrogen pressure of a Mg-0.1In alloy is 70% higher than that of pure MgH2. The temperature at 1 bar hydrogen pressure (T1bar) of Mg-0.1In alloy was reduced to 262.9 °C from 278.9 °C, which is the T1bar of pure MgH2. Furthermore, the kinetic rates of dehydrogenation of Mg-0.1In alloy hydride doped with a titanium intermetallic (TiMn2) catalyst were also significantly improved compared with those of MgH2.

Abstract:In the present study, we explored the temperature evolution and hydrogen desorption properties of the Mg50Ni50 alloy through both numerical simulation and experimental analyses. Desorption kinetics characterization was carried out using the volumetric method, specifically employing a Sievert's-type apparatus to investigate solid-gas reactions. The experiments covered a temperature range from 313 K to 353 K, with an initial hydrogen pressure of 12 bar. Simultaneously, a mathematical approach was employed to numerically investigate the temperature evolution within the hydride bed. Using COMSOL Multiphysics as a simulator, a numerical simulation was conducted based on experimental data. The study examined the impact of cooling temperature on hydride temperature evolution. Results revealed that hydrogen desorption kinetics of the amorphous Mg50Ni50 alloy are more significant compared to those of Mg2Ni compounds. Moreover, the effect of the warming temperature on the equilibrium pressure can also be observed in the hydrogen desorption isotherm curves. The experimental study of the Mg50Ni50 alloy provided activation energy data, along with determination of hydride formation enthalpy and entropy. On the other hand, we showed that the hydride temperature is maximum at the hydride-hydrogen interface within the hydride center.

Abstract:Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in a transmission geometry combined with visual analysis was used to investigate the crystallization process of MgSO<sub>4</sub> solution. Careful spectral analysis of both a feature at 1.6 THz and the overall magnitude of absorption allowed the extraction of information about the liquid phase before and during crystallization, aiding the investigation of solvation dynamics and the behavior of molecular species at phase boundaries. The method was reproducibly applied to a number of measurements on a series of solutions of three chosen concentrations at different temperatures. When increasing temperature at the end of the measurement, the dissolution of crystals was observed as well. The temperature-dependent absorption data of the semicrystalline systems were converted to the solvent concentrations using a recently developed method. Solutions of a series of concentrations were also investigated in the temperature range of 4-25 °C. The results were compared to the theoretical calculated values, and the consistent differences proved the existence of a hydration shell around the salt ions whose behavior is different from bulk water. Future work will focus on triggering nucleation at specific positions in order to study the very beginning of the crystallization process. MgSO<sub>4</sub> heptahydrate is used as a model system in this study, while the concept and the setup can be applied to other systems.

Abstract:In this work, Mg(In) and Mg(Ag) solid-solution ultrafine particles were successfully synthesized by using a direct current (DC) arc-plasma method and their hydrogen storage and hydrolysis behaviors were thoroughly investigated. In particular, microstructural analyses clearly reveal that MgH2@MgIn and MgH2@MgAg composites are autogenerated upon hydrogenation via the formation of nano MgIn or MgAg intermetallic phase on MgH2: Mg (In/Ag) + H2 - MgH2 + MgIn/MgAg. Upon dehydrogenation, in-situ TEM observations confirm that the reverse reaction occurs through the diffusion of In/Ag from the MgIn/MgAg phase to MgH2. Such a diffusion process is coupled with the decomposition of MgH2, leading to the microstructural transition from MgH2@MgIn or MgH2@MgAg to corresponding solid solutions. For Mg-In system, the discovery of the intermediate phase Mg3In through in-situ TEM observation indicates that the dehydrogenation process is a two-step reaction dominated by the diffusion of In. Meantime, the improved hydrolysis performances of the MgH2@MgIn and MgH2@MgAg composites are primarily attributed to the direct participation of MgIn/MgAg in the hydrolysis reaction, providing more active sites for accelerating hydrogen yield. Therefore, the introduction of In or Ag into Mg has provided with noticeable improvements in the hydrogen storage as well as the hydrolysis properties of MgH2.
Enhanced kinetics of hydride-metal phase transition in magnesium by vacancy clustering

Abstract:The relation between vacancies and vacancy clusters evolution and the H2 desorption kinetics was studied in nanocrystalline Mg samples submitted to successive H2 sorption cycles. Vacancy defects were detected by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy while the desorption process was monitored measuring the H2 desorption flux. During H2 sorption cycles, vacancies disappear, the number of vacancy clusters increases, and the crystalline quality of the Mg grains increases. The disappearance of intragranular vacancies is followed by an acceleration of the H2 desorption process. This is attributed to the increase of vacancy clusters at grain boundaries which assist the Mg nucleation in the hydride to metal phase transition. For H2 sorption cycles, the values of vacancy and vacancy cluster concentrations were obtained into the frame of the positron diffusion trapping model and the size of the involved vacancy clusters was evaluated by ab initio calculations of positron annihilation rates in Mg.

Abstract:Metal magnesium (Mg) fuels have been widely used in rocket propellants. The combustion study on individual Mg microparticles is crucial to the in-depth unveiling of the combustion mechanism of Mg-based propellants. In this paper, a new experimental setup was proposed to directly observe the combustion of individual micron-sized Mg particles, based on laser ignition and microscopic high-speed cinematography. The combustion process of individual Mg microparticles could be directly and clearly observed by the apparatus at high temporal and spatial resolutions. Individual Mg microparticles took gas phase combustion, and mainly underwent four stages: expansion, melting, gasification, ignition, and combustion. The ignition delay time and total combustion time had an exponential decay on the particle diameter, and they had a linear decay on the ignition power density. The melting took a dominant role in the whole burnout time. The gas-phase combustion flame seemed thick, inhomogeneous, and ring-like structure. The combustion model of individual Mg microparticles was built through combining the experimental results with the SEM, XRD, XPS, and EDS analysis of original samples and combustion residues. This study will be beneficial to understand the combustion process and reveal the combustion mechanism of metal microparticles besides Mg.

Abstract:Improving desorption kinetics and achieving thermodynamic destabilization of MgH2 is of great importance for its practical applications. In the present study, a MgH2-In composite was synthesized through high-energy ball milling of MgH2 and In, and microstructures; hydrogen ab/desorption properties of the composite were carefully investigated with respect to the identically processed pure MgH2. The thermodynamic destabilization of MgH2 was achieved through reversible phase transformation of Mg(In) solid solution due to the partial solubility of In in Mg lattice (11 atom %), which resulted in lower enthalpy values and reduced desorption temperatures. X-ray diffraction peak analysis revealed the presence of internal stress/strain fields caused by the lattice mismatch between Mg and indium, which could play an important role in improving the desorption properties of the composite. Hydrogen evolution of the MgH2-In composite was directly observed via an in situ highresolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), which shows the "hydrogen pump" effect of a Mg3In phase which is stable only under a hydrogen environment. The formation mechanism of the Mg3In phase and its role as "hydrogen pump" in the improvements of desorption kinetics are thoroughly discussed based on the TEM observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:We have studied the structure of H4e droplets doped with magnesium atoms using density functional theory. We have found that the solvation properties of this system strongly depend on the size of the H4e droplet. For small drops, Mg resides in a deep surface state, whereas for large-size drops it is fully solvated but radially delocalized in their interior. We have studied the 3s3pP11←3s2S10 transition of the dopant, and have compared our results with experimental data from laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Line-broadening effects due to the coupling of dynamical deformations of the surrounding helium with the dipole excitation of the impurity are explicitly taken into account. We show that the Mg radial delocalization inside large droplets may help reconcile the apparently contradictory solvation properties of magnesium as provided by LIF and electron-impact ionization experiments. The structure of H4e drops doped with two magnesium atoms is also studied and used to interpret the results of resonant two-photon-ionization (R2PI) and LIF experiments. We have found that the two solvated Mg atoms do not easily merge into a dimer, but rather form a weakly bound state due to the presence of an energy barrier caused by the helium environment that keeps them some 9.5 Å apart, preventing the formation of the Mg2 cluster. From this observation, we suggest that Mg atoms in H4e drops may form, under suitable conditions, a soft “foamlike” aggregate rather than coalesce into a compact metallic cluster. Our findings are in qualitative agreement with recent R2PI experimental evidence. We predict that, contrarily, Mg atoms adsorbed in H3e droplets do not form such metastable aggregates.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride is one of the most promising candidates for solid-state hydrogen storage and thermal energy storage applications. The effects of V-based solid solution alloys on the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation behavior of magnesium hydride are studied. Significant reduction of the dehydrogenation temperature and improvements of the kinetics of both absorption and desorption reactions were observed for MgH2 with V-based additives. Those observations were made using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) techniques. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements suggest that the additives functioned as catalysts during the reactions. The comparison of the characteristics of different additives suggested that the hydrogen equilibrium pressures of those additives themselves have a significant bearing on their effects on the kinetic behaviors of MgH2. The lower is the stability of an additive as a hydride, the more effective it would be as a catalyst.
