Abstract:A search for an exotic natural radioactivity of lead nuclei, using nuclear emulsion sheets as detector, is described. We discuss the experimental set-up of a test performed at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy), the event simulation, data analysis and preliminary results.

Abstract:The Mu2e experiment will search for the neutrino-less conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. An observation would be the first signal of charged lepton flavor violation and de facto evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The clean signature of the conversion process offers an opportunity for a powerful search: Mu2e will probe four orders of magnitude beyond current limits, with real discovery potential over a wide range of well motivated new physics models. This goal requires an integrated system of solenoids that will create the most intense muon beam in the world, and suppression of all possible background sources. The Mu2e components are currently being constructed, with the experiment planned to begin operations in the Fermilab Muon Campus within the next few years.

Abstract:True muonium ($\mu^+\mu^-$) is one of the heaviest and smallest electromagnetic bound states not containing hadrons, and has never been observed so far. In this work it is shown that the spin-1 TM state (ortho-TM) can be observed at a discovery level of significance in three months at the CERN SPS North-Area H4A beam line, using 43.7 GeV secondary positrons. In this way, by impinging the positrons on multiple thin low-Z targets, ortho-TM, which decays predominantly to $e^+e^-$, can be produced from $e^+e^- \to TM$ interactions on resonance ($\sqrt{s} \sim 2m_{\mu}$).

Abstract:We examine possible experimental signatures that may be exploited to search for stable supermassive particles with electric charges of in future underground experiments, and the upcoming JUNO experiment in particular. The telltale signal providing a unique signature of such particles, would be a correlated sequence of three or more nuclear recoils along a straight line, corresponding to the motion of a non-relativistic ( ) particle that could enter the detector from any direction. We provide some preliminary estimates for the expected event rates.

Abstract:Experiments seeking to detect radio emission stemming from neutrino interactions will soon reach sensitivities that bring a detection within reach. Since experiments like RNO-G or the future IceCube-Gen2 target more than an order of magnitude more effective volume than existing experiments, the renewed and detailed study of rare backgrounds is needed. In this paper, we study the potential background from energy losses of highly energetic atmospheric muons. Due to both limited experimental measurements and limited modeling in hadronic interaction models, the expected event rate is subject to large uncertainties. Here, we estimate rate predictions and their uncertainties for different models and instrumental parameters. We also study possible routes towards mitigation of the muon background, such as parent air shower detection, and illustrate what is needed to make the first measurement of the prompt muon flux at energies above 10 PeV.

Abstract:Neutron production in lead by cosmic muons has been studied with a Gadolinium doped liquid scintilla tor detector. The detector was installed next to the Muon-Induced Neutron Indirect Detection EXperiment (MINIDEX), permanently located in the Tubingen shallow underground laboratory where the mean muon energy is approximately 7 GeV. The MINIDEX plastic scintillators were used to tag muons; the neutrons were detected through neutron capture and neutron-induced nuclear recoil signals in the liquid scintil-lator detector. Results on the rates of observed neutron captures and nuclear recoils are presented and compared to predictions from GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3. The predicted rates are significantly too low for both versions of GEANT4. For neutron capture events, the observation exceeds the predictions by factors of 1.65 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.07 (syst) and 2.58 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.11 (syst.) for GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3, respectively. For neutron nuclear recoil events, which require neutron energies above approximately 5 MeV, the factors are even larger, 2.22 +/- 0.05(stat.) +/- 0.25 (syst.) and 3.76 +/- 0.09 (stat.) +/- 0.41 (syst.), respectively. Also presented is the first statistically significant measurement of the spectrum of neutrons induced by cosmic muons in lead between 5 and 40 MeV. It was obtained by unfolding the nuclear recoil spectrum. The observed neutron spectrum is harder than predicted by GEANT4. An investigation of the distribution of the time difference between muon tags and nuclear recoil signals confirms the validity of the unfolding procedure and shows that GEANT4 cannot properly describe the time distribution of nuclear recoil events. In general, the description of the data is worse for GEANT4-10.3 than for GEANT4-9.6. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Simulation of neutrons produced by high-energy muons underground

Abstract:This article describes the Monte Carlo simulation used to interpret the measurement of the muon-induced neutron flux in the Boulby Underground Laboratory (North Yorkshire, UK), recently performed using a large scintillator veto deployed around the ZEPLIN-II WIMP detector. Version 8.2 of the GEANT4 toolkit was used after relevant benchmarking and validation of neutron production models. In the direct comparison between Monte Carlo and experimental data, we find that the simulation produces a 1.8 times higher neutron rate, which we interpret as over-production in lead by GEANT4. The dominance of this material in neutron production allows us to estimate the absolute neutron yield in lead as (1.31 +/- 0.06) x 10^(-3) neutrons/muon/(g/cm^2) for a mean muon energy of 260 GeV. Simulated nuclear recoils due to muon-induced neutrons in the ZEPLIN-II target volume (~1 year exposure) showed that, although a small rate of events is expected from this source of background in the energy range of interest for dark matter searches, no event survives an anti-coincidence cut with the veto.

Abstract:We study the detection of particles with magnetic moment and no charge by using coils and solenoids. The detector uses the Faraday-Lenz law to create a current whose energy is measured. Our development can be applied to any particle with magnetic moment. The neutron is ideal to show our detector scheme for particles with long lifetimes and the result is encouraging. However, our interest lies in the detection of monopolium states which decays much faster than neutrons. The accelerator scenario with a relatively low monopole mass $\sim 1000$ GeV requires the generalization of the scheme to finite lifetimes. We use two descriptions, which we have called Dirac and Schwinger, (also $\beta$-coupling), schemes, in our study. The theoretical behavior of excited monopolia in coils teaches us many of their properties. However, their small production cross sections, given the achievable LHC luminosities, makes detection using coils difficult. Therefore, we generalize the discussion to cosmological heavy monopolium. Our scheme becomes useful for those and supplements detectors like MoEDAL and MAPP in distinguishing monopolia from other long lived particles.

Abstract:We propose an experiment to test the hypothesis that the reported anomaly on atmospheric neutrino fluxes is due to nu_mu <-> nu_x oscillations. It will rely both on a disappearance technique, exploiting the method of the dependence of the event rate on L/E, which was recently shown to be effective for detection of neutrino oscillation and measurement of the oscillation parameters, and on an appearance technique, looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energy produced by upward-going tau neutrinos. The detector will consist of iron planes interleaved by limited streamer tubes. The total mass will be about 30 kt. The possibility of recuperating most of the instrumentation from existing detectors allows to avoid R&D phases and to reduce construction time. In four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to oscillations nu_mu <-> nu_x with Delta m^2 > 10^-4 eV^2 and a mixing near to maximal, and answer the question whether nu_x is a sterile or a tau neutrino.

Abstract:The MUonE experiment aims at providing a novel determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the study of elastic muon-electron scattering. Since the initial-state electrons are bound in a low-$Z$ atomic target, the interaction between the incoming muons and the nuclei is expected to be the main source of experimental background. In this article, we study the production of a real lepton pair from the muon-nucleus scattering, discussing its numerical impact in the MUonE kinematic configuration. The process is described as a scattering of a muon in an external Coulomb field with the addition of a form factor to describe the nuclear charge distribution. The calculation is implemented in the fully differential Monte Carlo event generator MESMER, without introducing any approximation on the angular variables.

Abstract:The discovery of non-zero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple SM neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). In minimal models, the HNL production and decay are controlled by SM interactions and the mixing between HNLs and the active neutrino and typically result in relatively long lifetimes if the masses are in the MeV-GeV range. We have studied the physics case and technical feasibility for a dedicated HNL search using the NuMI beam at an ICARUS-like detector. Our analysis conclusively demonstrates that the constraints on the mixing of the HNL as a function of its mass for an ICARUS-like detector with NuMI beam are highly competitive with the limits obtained from present experiments.

Abstract:The Mu2e experiment searches for the neutrino-less muon to electron conversion in the field of a nucleus, which is a charged lepton flavor violating process. The goal of the experiment is to reach a single event sensitivity of 2.8 x 10^{-17}, setting an upper limit on the muon conversion rate at 6.7 x 10^{-17}. This corresponds to a four order of magnitude improvement with respect to the existing limits.

Abstract:Muons are a fascinating probe to study nuclear properties. Muonic atoms can easily be formed by stopping negative muons inside a material. The muon is subsequently captured by the nucleus and, due to its much higher mass compared to the electron, orbits the nucleus at very small distances. During this atomic capture process the muon emits characteristic X-rays during its cascade down to the ground state. The energies of these X-rays reveal the muonic energy level scheme, from which properties like the nuclear charge radius or its quadrupole moment can be extracted. While almost all stable elements have been examined using muons, probing highly radioactive atoms has so far not been possible. The muX experiment has developed a technique based on transfer reaction inside a high pressure hydrogen/deuterium gas cell to examine targets available only in microgram quantities.

Abstract:Only two types of Standard Model particles are able to propagate the 480meters separating the ATLAS interaction point and FASER: neutrinos and muons. Furthermore, muons are copiously produced in proton collisions. We propose to use FASERν as a muon fixed target experiment in order to search for new bosonic degrees of freedom coupled predominantly to muons. These muon force carriers are particularly interesting in light of the recent measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Using a novel analysis technique, we show that even in the current LHC run, FASERν could potentially probe previously unexplored parts of the parameter space. Abstract:We present strategies for the Mu3e experiment to search for light, weakly coupled particles produced in rare muon decays, focusing on displaced $e^+e^-$ decays within the hollow target. In most scenarios the backgrounds can be fully suppressed with a suitable set of cuts. We furthermore quantify the interplay between displaced and prompt searches at Mu3e and existing constraints, showing how Mu3e has a unique opportunity to probe unexplored parameter space.

Abstract:New physics can be searched for in deep inelastic scattering experiments. New phenomena, like additional production mechanisms for heavy quarks, manifest themselves through production and decays of short-lived hadrons, which give additional muons in their decays. Muons from decays of light mesons can then be a severe background, especially at fixed target experiments. In order to make a first estimate of such a background a simple analytic method is here developed and applied on the muon scattering experiment NMC.

Probing neutrino millicharges at the European Spallation Source

Abstract:We study the potential of a set of future detectors, proposed to be located at the European Spallation Source (ESS), to probe neutrino millicharges through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. In particular, we focus on detectors with similar characteristics as those that are under development for operation at the ESS, including detection technologies based on cesium iodine, germanium, and noble gases. Under the considered conditions, we show that the Ge detector, with a lighter nuclear target mass with respect to CsI and to a noble gas like Xe, is more efficient to constrain neutrino millicharges, reaching a sensitivity of $\sim 10^{-9}e$ for diagonal neutrino millicharges, and $\sim 10^{-8}e$ for the transition ones. In addition, we study the effects of including electron scattering processes for the CsI detector, achieving an expected sensitivity of $\sim 10^{-10} e$ for the diagonal millicharges.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel instrumentation for rare events selection which was tested in our research of short lived super heavy elements production and detection. The instrumentation includes an active catcher multi elements system and dedicated electronics. The active catcher located in the forward hemisphere is composed of 63 scintillator detection modules. Reaction products of damped collisions between heavy ion projectiles and heavy target nuclei are implanted in the fast plastic scintillators of the active catcher modules. The acquisition system trigger delivered by logical branch of the electronics allows to record the reaction products which decay via the alpha particle emissions or spontaneous fission which take place between beam bursts. One microsecond wave form signal from FADCs contains information on heavy implanted nucleus as well as its decays.
