Abstract:We compare the prospects for detecting a neutrino magnetic moment by the measurement of neutrinos from a tritium source, reactors and low-energy beta-beams. In all cases the neutrinos or antineutrinos are detected by scattering of electrons. We find that a large (20 MCurie) tritium source could improve the limit on the neutrino magnetic moment significantly, down to the level of a few ×10−12 in units of Bohr magnetons μB while low-energy beta-beams with sufficiently rapid production of ions could improve the limits to the level of a few ×10−11μB. The latter would require ion production at the rate of at least 1015 s−1.

New Experiments to Measure the Muon Anomalous Gyromagnetic Moment

Abstract:The magnetic moment is a fundamental property of particles. The measurement of these magnetic moments and the comparison with the values predicted by the standard model of particle physics is a way to test our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of our world. In some cases, such as for the electron, this comparison has resulted in confirmation of the standard model with incredible precision. In contrast, the magnetic moment of the muon has shown a long-standing disagreement in the measured and the predicted value. There is currently a tantalizing three-standard-deviation difference between the current best measurement (with a precision of 0.54 ppm) and the state-of-the-art standard model prediction. This represents one of the very few experimental hints for physics beyond the standard model. There are currently two major experimental efforts underway to improve the precision of the muon magnetic moment measurement. The first is an evolution of the E-821 experiment, originally located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States. This is experiment, E-989, is located at Fermilab and will measure the spin precession rate of positive muons in a 14-m diameter storage ring using decay positrons. The goal of the experiment is to reduce the current experimental uncertainty by a factor of three. The experiment is currently being constructed and aims to start taking data in 2017. An alternative, and very complementary, experiment is being planned at J-PARC in Japan. This experiment, E-34, will utilize low energy, ultra-cold muons in a much smaller storage ring. This experiment aims for a similar precision to the Fermilab experiment and aims to begin data taking on a similar timescale.

Abstract:A search of neutrino magnetic moment was carried out at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station at a distance of 28 m from the 2.9 GW reactor core. With a high purity germanium detector of mass 1.06 kg surrounded by scintillating NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) crystals as anti-Compton detectors, a detection threshold of 5 keV and a background level of 1 kg(-1) keV(-1) day(-1) at 12-60 keV were achieved. Based on 4712 and 1250 h of reactor ON and OFF data, respectively, the limit on the neutrino magnetic moment of mu((nu) over bare)<1.3x10(-10)mu(B) at 90% confidence level was derived. An indirect bound of the <(nu)over bar>(e) radiative lifetime of m(nu)(3)tau(nu)>2.8x10(18) eV(3) s can be inferred.

Abstract:China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) is ideal for studying solar-, geo-, and supernova neutrinos. A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray background would play an essential role in proceeding with the R\&D research for these MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 264 high-energy muon events from a 645.2-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I), reconstructed their directions, and measured the cosmic-ray muon flux to be $(3.53\pm0.22_{\text{stat.}}\pm0.07_{\text{sys.}})\times10^{-10}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The observed angular distributions indicate the leakage of cosmic-ray muon background and agree with the simulation accounting for Jinping mountain's terrain. A survey of muon fluxes at different laboratory locations situated under mountains and below mine shaft indicated that the former is generally a factor of $(4\pm2)$ larger than the latter with the same vertical overburden. This study provides a convenient back-of-the-envelope estimation for muon flux of an underground experiment.

Abstract:We revisit the physics of neutrino magnetic moments, focusing in particular on the case where the right-handed, or sterile, neutrinos are heavier (up to several MeV) than the left-handed Standard Model neutrinos. The discussion is centered around the idea of detecting an upscattering event mediated by a transition magnetic moment in a neutrino or dark matter experiment. Considering neutrinos from all known sources, as well as including all available data from XENON1T and Borexino, we derive the strongest up-to-date exclusion limits on the active-to-sterile neutrino transition magnetic moment. We then study complementary constraints from astrophysics and cosmology, performing, in particular, a thorough analysis of BBN . We find that these data sets scrutinize most of the relevant parameter space. Explaining the XENON1T excess with transition magnetic moments is marginally possible if very conservative assumptions are adopted regarding the supernova 1987 A and CMB constraints. Finally, we discuss model-building challenges that arise in scenarios that feature large magnetic moments while keeping neutrino masses well below 1 eV. We present a successful ultraviolet-complete model of this type based on TeV-scale leptoquarks, establishing links with muon magnetic moment, B physics anomalies, and collider searches at the LHC.

KATRIN: an experiment to determine the neutrino mass

Abstract:The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is a next generation, model independent, large scale experiment to determine the neutrino mass by investigating the kinematics of tritium beta-decay with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c2. The measurement setup consists of a high luminosity windowless gaseous molecular tritium source (WGTS), a differential and cryogenic pumped electron transport and tritium retention section, a tandem spectrometer section (pre-spectrometer and main spectrometer) for energy analysis, followed by a detector system for counting transmitted beta-decay electrons. To achieve the desired sensitivity, the WGTS, in which tritium decays with an activity of about 10e11 Bq, needs to be stable on the 0.1 % level in injection pressure and temperature at an absolute value of about 30 K. With the capability to create an axial magnetic field of 3.6 T the WGTS is going to be one of the world's most complex superconducting magnet and cryostat systems. The main spectrometer (length 24 m, diameter 10 m), which works as a retarding electrostatic spectrometer, will have an energy resolution of 0.93 eV at 18.6 keV. For the precise energy analysis at the tritium endpoint, a retarding potential of -18.6 kV is needed with 1 ppm stability. To reach the background level needed to achieve the sensitivity, it will be operated at a pressure of 10e-11 mbar. This article will give an overview of the KATRIN experiment and its current status.

Search of Neutrino Magnetic Moments with a High-Purity Germanium Detector at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station

Abstract:A search of neutrino magnetic moments was carried out at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station at a distance of 28 m from the 2.9 GW reactor core. Based on 570.7 and 127.8 days of Reactor ON and OFF data, respectively, at an average Reactor ON electron anti-neutrino flux of $\rm{6.4 \times 10^{12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$, the limit on the neutrino magnetic moments of $\rm{\munuebar < 7.4 \times 10^{-11} \mub}$ at 90% confidence level was derived. Indirect bounds on the $\nuebar$ radiative decay lifetimes were inferred.

Abstract:We propose an experiment to test the hypothesis that the reported anomaly on atmospheric neutrino fluxes is due to nu_mu <-> nu_x oscillations. It will rely both on a disappearance technique, exploiting the method of the dependence of the event rate on L/E, which was recently shown to be effective for detection of neutrino oscillation and measurement of the oscillation parameters, and on an appearance technique, looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energy produced by upward-going tau neutrinos. The detector will consist of iron planes interleaved by limited streamer tubes. The total mass will be about 30 kt. The possibility of recuperating most of the instrumentation from existing detectors allows to avoid R&D phases and to reduce construction time. In four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to oscillations nu_mu <-> nu_x with Delta m^2 > 10^-4 eV^2 and a mixing near to maximal, and answer the question whether nu_x is a sterile or a tau neutrino.

Abstract:The electromagnetic properties of neutrinos, which are either trivial or negligible in the context of the Standard Model, can probe new physics and have significant implications in astrophysics and cosmology. The current best direct limits on the neutrino millicharges and magnetic moments are both derived from data taken with germanium detectors with low thresholds at keV levels. In this paper, we discuss in detail a robust, ab initio method: the multiconfiguration relativistic random-phase approximation, that enables us to reliably understand the germanium detector response at the sub-keV level, where atomic many-body physics matters. By using existing data with sub-keV thresholds, limits on the reactor antineutrino’s millicharge, magnetic moment, and charge radius squared are derived. The projected sensitivities for next-generation experiments are also given and discussed.

Abstract:Liquid xenon is one of the leading targets to search for dark matter via its elastic scattering on nuclei or electrons. Due to their low-threshold and low-background capabilities, liquid xenon detectors can also detect coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) or neutrino–electron scattering. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a compact and movable liquid xenon detector with an active target mass of O(10∼100) kg and single-electron sensitivity to detect CEνNS from anti-neutrinos from a nuclear reactor. Assuming a single- and few-electron background rate at the level achieved by the XENON10/100 experiments, we expect a 5-σ detection of CEνNS with less than 400 kg-days of exposure. We further investigate the sensitivity of such a detector to neutrino magnetic moment with neutrino electron scattering. If an electronic recoil background rate of 0.01∼0.1 events/keV/kg/day above 1 keV can be achieved with adequate shielding, a liquid xenon detector can reach a neutrino magnetic moment sensitivity of 10−11μB, which would improve upon the current most-constraining laboratory limits from the GEMMA and Borexino experiments. Additionally, such a detector would be able to probe the region compatible with a magnetic moment interpretation of the low-energy excess electronic recoil events recently reported by XENON1T.

Abstract:Neutron production in lead by cosmic muons has been studied with a Gadolinium doped liquid scintilla tor detector. The detector was installed next to the Muon-Induced Neutron Indirect Detection EXperiment (MINIDEX), permanently located in the Tubingen shallow underground laboratory where the mean muon energy is approximately 7 GeV. The MINIDEX plastic scintillators were used to tag muons; the neutrons were detected through neutron capture and neutron-induced nuclear recoil signals in the liquid scintil-lator detector. Results on the rates of observed neutron captures and nuclear recoils are presented and compared to predictions from GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3. The predicted rates are significantly too low for both versions of GEANT4. For neutron capture events, the observation exceeds the predictions by factors of 1.65 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.07 (syst) and 2.58 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.11 (syst.) for GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3, respectively. For neutron nuclear recoil events, which require neutron energies above approximately 5 MeV, the factors are even larger, 2.22 +/- 0.05(stat.) +/- 0.25 (syst.) and 3.76 +/- 0.09 (stat.) +/- 0.41 (syst.), respectively. Also presented is the first statistically significant measurement of the spectrum of neutrons induced by cosmic muons in lead between 5 and 40 MeV. It was obtained by unfolding the nuclear recoil spectrum. The observed neutron spectrum is harder than predicted by GEANT4. An investigation of the distribution of the time difference between muon tags and nuclear recoil signals confirms the validity of the unfolding procedure and shows that GEANT4 cannot properly describe the time distribution of nuclear recoil events. In general, the description of the data is worse for GEANT4-10.3 than for GEANT4-9.6. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Abstract Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations, we know that neutrinos have non-zero mass. However, the absolute neutrino-mass scale remains unknown. Here we report the upper limits on effective electron anti-neutrino mass, m ν , from the second physics run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment. In this experiment, m ν is probed via a high-precision measurement of the tritium β -decay spectrum close to its endpoint. This method is independent of any cosmological model and does not rely on assumptions whether the neutrino is a Dirac or Majorana particle. By increasing the source activity and reducing the background with respect to the first physics campaign, we reached a sensitivity on m ν of 0.7 eV c –2 at a 90% confidence level (CL). The best fit to the spectral data yields $${{\mbox{}}}{m}_{\nu }^{2}{{\mbox{}}}$$ m ν 2 = (0.26 ± 0.34) eV 2 c –4 , resulting in an upper limit of m ν < 0.9 eV c –2 at 90% CL. By combining this result with the first neutrino-mass campaign, we find an upper limit of m ν < 0.8 eV c –2 at 90% CL.

Abstract:The Mu2e experiment searches for the neutrino-less muon to electron conversion in the field of a nucleus, which is a charged lepton flavor violating process. The goal of the experiment is to reach a single event sensitivity of 2.8 x 10^{-17}, setting an upper limit on the muon conversion rate at 6.7 x 10^{-17}. This corresponds to a four order of magnitude improvement with respect to the existing limits.

Abstract:The precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment aμ has stimulated much theoretical and experimental efforts over more than six decades. The last experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY, USA obtained a value more than three standard deviations larger than predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics, and is one of the strongest hints for physics beyond the Standard Model. A new experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, IL, USA to measure aμ with fourfold increased precision to 140 ppb is currently in its commissioning phase. While the new experiment will reuse the 1.45 T superconducting muon storage ring which was shipped from Brookhaven National Laboratory, most of the other instrumentation of the experiment will be new. This will allow the experiment to make efficient use of the significantly higher number of muons available at the new muon campus. We discuss the general status of the experiment and in particular focus on the improved tools available to homogenize and determine the magnetic field in the muon storage ring.

Abstract:The MUonE experiment has been proposed to measure the differential cross section of $\mu e$ elastic scattering, by colliding the 160 GeV muons of the CERN M2 beam with atomic electrons of thin target plates. From a very precise measurement of the shape one can achieve a competitive determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic moment, independent from the other existing ones. In preparation for the Test Run with a reduced setup the detector geometry has been optimised. Expected yields for a first physics run with limited statistics are discussed, together with prospects for the assessment of the main systematic uncertainties.

Current Direct Neutrino Mass Experiments

Abstract:In this contribution we review the status and perspectives of direct neutrino mass experiments. These experiments investigate the kinematics of $\beta$-decays of specific isotopes ($^3$H, $^{187}$Re, $^{163}$Ho) to derive model-independent information on the averaged electron (anti-) neutrino mass, which is formed by the incoherent sum of the neutrino mass eigenstates contributing to the electron neutrino. We first review the kinematics of $\beta$-decay and the determination of the neutrino mass, before giving a brief overview of past neutrino mass measurements (SN1987a-ToF studies, Mainz and Troitsk experiments for $^3$H, cryo-bolometers for $^{187}$Re). We then describe the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment which is currently under construction at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The large-scale setup will use the MAC-E-Filter principle pioneered earlier to push the sensitivity down to a value of 200 meV(90% C.L.). KATRIN faces many technological challenges that have to be resolved with regard to source intensity and stability, as well as precision energy analysis and low background rate close to the kinematic endpoint of tritium $\beta$-decay at 18.6 keV. We then review new experimental approaches such as the MARE, ECHO and Project8 experiments, which offer the promise to perform an independent measurement of the neutrino mass in the sub-eV region. This variety of methods and the novel technologies developed in all present and future experiments demonstrate the great potential of direct neutrino mass experiments in providing vital information on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos.

Search for an admixture of sterile neutrino in the electron spectrum from tritium $β$-decay

Abstract:We propose an experiment intended for search for an admixture of sterile neutrino with mass m$_s$ in the range of 1-8 keV that may be detected as specific distortion of the electron energy spectrum during tritium decay. The distortion is spread over large part of the spectrum so to reveal it one can use a detector with relatively poor (near 10-15%) energy resolution. A classic proportional counter is a simple natural choice for a tritium $\beta$-decay detector. The method we are proposing is original in two respects. First, the counter is produced as a whole from fully-fused quartz tube allowing to measure current pulse directly from anode while providing high stability for a long time. Second, a modern digital acquisition technique can be used in measurements at ultrahigh count rate - up to 10$^6$ Hz. As a result an energy spectrum of tritium electrons containing up to 10$^{12}$ counts may be collected in a month of live time measurements. Due to high statistics an upper limit down to 10$^{-3}$..10$^{-5}$ can be put on sterile neutrino mixing at 95% CL for m$_s$ in the range of 1-8 keV, that will be 1..2 orders of magnitude better then bounds published up to now.

Abstract:The measurement of neutrino magnetic moment larger than $10^{-19}\mu_B$ would be a clear signature of physics beyond the standard model other than the existence of massive Dirac neutrinos. The use of a spherical proportional counter detector filled with gas at 40 bar located near a nuclear reactor would be a simple way to perform such a measurement exploiting the developments made on such a technology for the search of dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. Different targets can be used just by replacing the gas: xenon, CF$_4$ and argon were compared and the sensitivity in one year of data taking could reach the level of $4.3 \times 10^{-12} \mu_B$, $6.5 \times 10^{-12} \mu_B$, and $8.5 \times 10^{-12} \mu_B$, respectively.

Abstract:Low energy anti-neutrinos detected from reactors or other sources have typically used the conversion of an anti-neutrino on Hydrogen, producing a positron and a free neutron. This neutron is subsequently captured on a secondary element with a large neutron capture cross section such as gadolinium or cadmium. We have studied the anti-neutrino conversion and suggest other elements that have a comparable cross section for anti-neutrino reactions. With most neutron captures on gadolinium, it is possible to get two or three delayed gamma signals of known energy to occur. Experiments like ATLAS can make measurements with timing on the order of 25 ns. With electronics like these, this leads to the possibility of having a triple delayed coincidence using the positron annihilation on atomic shell electrons as the starting signal. We have also found an isotope of tungsten, $^{183}$W that offers a large anti-neutrino interaction cross section of $1.19 \times 10^{-46}$ m$^2$ and an anti-neutrino threshold energy for the production of the ground state at 2.094 MeV and the production of the first excited state at 2.167 MeV. This reaction makes a nuclear m1 excited state of $^{183}$Ta$^*$ that emits a signature secondary gamma pulse of 73 keV with a 106 ns half-life. This offers a new delayed coincidence technique that can be used to identify anti-neutrinos with lower background noise. This allows for less shielding than required for modern inverse beta decay detectors.

Abstract:The Mu2e experiment will search for the neutrino-less conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. An observation would be the first signal of charged lepton flavor violation and de facto evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The clean signature of the conversion process offers an opportunity for a powerful search: Mu2e will probe four orders of magnitude beyond current limits, with real discovery potential over a wide range of well motivated new physics models. This goal requires an integrated system of solenoids that will create the most intense muon beam in the world, and suppression of all possible background sources. The Mu2e components are currently being constructed, with the experiment planned to begin operations in the Fermilab Muon Campus within the next few years.
