Abstract:The mass spectrum of Delta resonances is compared to predictions based on three quark-model variants, to predictions assuming that chiral symmetry is restored in high-mass baryon resonances, and to predictions derived from AdS/QCD. The latter approach yields a nearly perfect agreement when the confinement property of QCD is modeled by a soft wall in AdS.

Abstract:We discuss the role of clustering on monopole, dipole, and quadrupole excitations in nuclei in the framework of the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM). The SA-NCSM starts from nucleon-nucleon potentials and, by exploring symmetries known to dominate the nuclear dynamics, can reach nuclei up through the calcium region by accommodating ultra-large model spaces critical to descriptions of clustering and collectivity. The results are based on calculations of electromagnetic sum rules and discretized responses using the Lanczos algorithm, that can be used to determine response functions, and for 4He are benchmarked against exact solutions of the hyperspherical harmonics method. In particular, we focus on He, Be, and O isotopes, including giant resonances and monopole sum rules.

Abstract:A continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory is used to perform a comparative study of the four lightest $(I=1/2,{J}^{P}=1/{2}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}})$ baryon isospin doublets in order to elucidate their structural similarities and differences. Such analyses predict the presence of nonpointlike, electromagnetically active quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and in these doublets, isoscalar-scalar, isovector-pseudovector, isoscalar-pseudoscalar, and vector diquarks can all play a role. In the two lightest $(1/2,1/{2}^{+})$ doublets, however, scalar and pseudovector diquarks are overwhelmingly dominant. The associated rest-frame wave functions are largely $S$-wave in nature; and the first excited state in this $1/{2}^{+}$ channel has the appearance of a radial excitation of the ground state. The two lightest $(1/2,1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ doublets fit a different picture: accurate estimates of their masses are obtained by retaining only pseudovector diquarks; in their rest frames, the amplitudes describing their dressed-quark cores contain roughly equal fractions of even- and odd-parity diquarks; and the associated wave functions are predominantly $P$-wave in nature, but possess measurable $S$-wave components. Moreover, the first excited state in each negative-parity channel has little of the appearance of a radial excitation. In quantum field theory, all differences between positive- and negative-parity channels must owe to chiral symmetry breaking, which is overwhelmingly dynamical in the light-quark sector. Consequently, experiments that can validate the contrasts drawn herein between the structure of the four lightest $(1/2,1/{2}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}})$ doublets will prove valuable in testing links between emergent mass generation and observable phenomena and, plausibly, thereby revealing dynamical features of confinement.

Abstract:An overarching scientific challenge for the coming decade is to discover the meaning of confinement, its relationship to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) - the origin of visible mass - and the connection between them. In progressing toward meeting this challenge, significant progress has been made using continuum methods in QCD. For example, a novel understanding of gluon and quark confinement and its consequences has begun to emerge from quantum field theory; a clear picture is being drawn of how hadron masses emerge dynamically in a universe with light quarks; and ground-state hadron wave functions with a direct connection to QCD are becoming available, which reveal that quark-quark correlations are crucial in hadron structure. There is growing experimental support for this body of predictions in both elastic and nucleon-to-resonance-transition form factors.

Abstract:A method used previously to calculate the masses of the vector mesons is extended to the calculation of the nucleon resonances. The method is based on the choice of integration kernels which eliminate the unknown parts of the spectrum. We obtain remarkably stable results in a wide range of R, the radius of the integration contour in the complex plane. Agreement with experiment is good.

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.

Abstract:The chiral quark soliton model (CQSM) is one of the most successful models of baryons at quark level, which maximally incorporates the most important feature of low energy QCD, i.e. the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breakdown. Basically, it is a relativistic mean-field theory with full account of infinitely many Dirac-sea quarks in a rotational-symmetry-breaking mean field of hedgehog shape. The numerical technique established so far enables us to make a nonperturbative evaluation of Casimir effects (i.e. effects of vacuum-polarized Dirac sea) on a variety of baryon observables. This incompatible feature of the model manifests most clearly in its predictions for parton distribution functions of the nucleon. In this talk, after briefly reviewing several basic features of the CQSM, we plan to demonstrate in various ways that this unique model of baryons provides us with an ideal tool for disentangling nonperturbative aspect of the internal partonic structure of the nucleon, especially the underlying spin structure function of the nucleon.

Signatures of chiral dynamics in the Nucleon to Delta transition

Abstract:Utilizing the methods of chiral effective field theory we present an analysis of the electromagnetic $N\Delta$-transition current in the framework of the non-relativistic "small scale expansion" (SSE) to leading-one-loop order. We discuss the momentum dependence of the magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole and coulomb quadrupole transition form factors up to a momentum transfer of $Q^2<0.3$ GeV$^2$. Particular emphasis is put on the identification of the role of chiral dynamics in this transition. Our analysis indicates that there is indeed non-trivial momentum dependence in the two quadrupole form factors at small $Q^2<0.15$ GeV$^2$ arising from long distance pion physics, leading for example to negative radii in the (real part of the) quadrupole transition form factors. We compare our results with the EMR($Q^2$) and CMR($Q^2$) multipole-ratios from pion-electroproduction experiments and find a remarkable agreement up to four-momentum transfer of $Q^2\approx 0.3$ GeV$^2$. Finally, we discuss the chiral extrapolation of the three transition form factors at $Q^2=0$, identifying rapid changes in the (real part of the) quark-mass dependence of the quadrupole transition moments for pion masses below 200 MeV, which arise again from long distance pion dynamics. Our findings indicate that dipole extrapolation methods currently used in lattice QCD analyses of baryon form factors are not applicable for the chiral extrapolation of $N\Delta$ quadrupole transition form factors.

Abstract:Understanding the strong interaction dynamics that govern the emergence of hadron mass (EHM) represents a challenging open problem in the Standard Model. In this paper we describe new opportunities for gaining insight into EHM from results on nucleon resonance (N*) electroexcitation amplitudes (i.e., γvpN* electrocouplings) in the mass range up to 1.8 GeV for virtual photon four-momentum squared (i.e., photon virtualities Q2) up to 7.5 GeV2 available from exclusive meson electroproduction data acquired during the 6-GeV era of experiments at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). These results, combined with achievements in the use of continuum Schwinger function methods (CSMs), offer new opportunities for charting the momentum dependence of the dressed quark mass from results on the Q2-evolution of the γvpN* electrocouplings. This mass function is one of the three pillars of EHM and its behavior expresses influences of the other two, viz. the running gluon mass and momentum-dependent effective charge. A successful description of the Δ(1232)3/2+ and N(1440)1/2+ electrocouplings has been achieved using CSMs with, in both cases, common momentum-dependent mass functions for the dressed quarks, for the gluons, and the same momentum-dependent strong coupling. The properties of these functions have been inferred from nonperturbative studies of QCD and confirmed, e.g., in the description of nucleon and pion elastic electromagnetic form factors. Parameter-free CSM predictions for the electrocouplings of the Δ(1600)3/2+ became available in 2019. The experimental results obtained in the first half of 2022 have confirmed the CSM predictions. We also discuss prospects for these studies during the 12-GeV era at JLab using the CLAS12 detector, with experiments that are currently in progress, and canvass the physics motivation for continued studies in this area with a possible increase of the JLab electron beam energy up to 22 GeV. Such an upgrade would finally enable mapping of the dressed quark mass over the full range of distances (i.e., quark momenta) where the dominant part of hadron mass and N* structure emerge in the transition from the strongly coupled to perturbative QCD regimes.
A Potential Model Study of the Nucleon's Charge and Mass Radius

Abstract:We study the charge and mass distributions within a nucleon and compute the associated squared radii based on a potential model approach. Different constituent quark configurations such as $\Delta$, $Y$, and quark-diquark are considered and compared, with model parameters calibrated by experimental measurements of the proton and neutron charge radius. The results suggest that while the charge radius is dictated by quark dynamics, the mass radius is strongly influenced by nonperturbative QCD contributions to a nucleon's mass that are not sensitive to the constituent quarks. As a result, the mass radius could become substantially different from the charge radius. The obtained nucleon mass distributions of different configurations are further used for simulations of the initial conditions in heavy ion collisions. The computed eccentricities $\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_3$ are found to demonstrate a considerable sensitivity to the input nucleon profiles, especially to the mass radius in the peripheral region as well as for systems with fewer participants.

Abstract:We explain how the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking ensures that Poincaré covariant analyses of the three valence–quark scattering problem in continuum quantum field theory yield a picture of the nucleon as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises primarily through the sum of two separate contributions. One involves aspects of the non-Abelian character of Quantum Chromodynamics that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate tight, dynamical color-antitriplet quark–quark correlations in the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector-isotriplet channels. This attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation, which is required in order to ensure that each valence–quark participates in all diquark correlations to the complete extent allowed by its quantum numbers. Combining these effects, we arrive at a properly antisymmetrised Faddeev wave function for the nucleon and calculate, e.g. the flavor-separated versions of the Dirac and Pauli form factors and the proton’s leading-twist parton distribution amplitude. We conclude that available data and planned experiments are capable of validating the proposed picture.
Unified study of nucleon and $Δ$ baryon spectra and their strong decays with chiral dynamics

Abstract:In this work we systematically study both the mass spectra and strong decays of the nucleon and $\Delta$ resonances up to the $N=2$ shell within a unified quark model framework with chiral dynamics. In this framework we achieve a good description of the strong decay properties of the well-established nucleon and $\Delta$ resonances. Meanwhile, the mass reversal between $N(1440)1/2^{+}$ as the first radial excitation state and the $1P$-wave nucleon resonances can be explained. We show that the three-body spin-orbit potential arising from the one-gluon exchange can cause a large configuration mixing between $N(1520)3/2^-$ and $N(1700)3/2^-$, and is also responsible for the large splitting between $\Delta(1600)1/2^-$ and $\Delta(1700)3/2^-$. Some of these baryon resonances turn to weakly couple to the $N\pi$, $N\eta$, $K\Lambda$, and $K\Sigma$ channels, which may answer the question why they have not been established in these channels via the $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ scatterings. It shows that these ``missing resonances" may have large potentials to be established in the $N\pi\pi$ final state due to their large decay rates into either the $\Delta(1232)$ or $1P$-wave nucleon resonances via the pionic decays. Further experimental search for their signals in charmonium decays at BESIII is thus strongly recommended.

Abstract:We discuss the relevance of the scalar modes appearing in chiral theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking such as the NJL model for nuclear matter studies. We show that it depends on the relative role of chiral symmetry breaking and confinement in the nucleon mass origin. It is only in the case of a mixed origin that nuclear matter can be stable and reach saturation. We describe models of nucleon structure where this balance is achieved. We show how chiral constarints and confinement modify the QCD sum rules for the mass evolution in nuclear matter.

Physical interpretation of the 2s excitation of the nucleon

Abstract:Lattice QCD calculations of the $2s$ radial excitation of the nucleon place the state at an energy of approximately 1.9 GeV, raising the possibility that it is associated with the $N1/2^+(1880)$ and $N1/2^+(1710)$ resonances through mixing with two-particle meson-baryon states. The discovery of the $N1/2^+(1880)$ resonance in pion photoproduction but not in $\pi N$ scattering and the small width of the $N1/2^+(1710)$ resonance suggest that a state associated with these resonances would be insensitive to the manner in which pions are permitted to dress it. To explore this possibility, we examine the spectrum of nucleon radial excitations in both 2+1 flavour QCD and in simulations where the coupling to meson-baryon states is significantly modified through quenching. We find the energy of the $2s$ radial excitation to be insensitive to this modification for quark masses close to the physical point. This invariance provides further evidence that the $2s$ radial excitation of the nucleon is associated with the $N1/2^+(1880)$ and $N1/2^+(1710)$ resonances.

A simple model to explain narrow nucleon resonances below the πN threshold

Abstract:Several experiments suggest the existence of narrow excited states in the nucleon below the \pi N threshold. Taking all information together a series of states emerges at masses of 940, 966, 985, 1003, m_4, 1044, m_6, 1094 MeV above the nucleon ground state at 940 MeV with m_4 and m_6 missing. A model based on the excitation of collective states of the quark condensate is proposed explaining these states as multiple production of a ``genuine'' Goldstone Boson with a mass of \approx 20 MeV. The model also accounts in a natural way for the non-observation of m_4 and m_6. It suggests an explanation of the mass gap problem of the hadronic spectrum and a confinement mechanism.

Abstract:Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transition form factors. Lattice QCD studies of this transition require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to the mass of the $\Delta$ resonance, which includes $N\pi$ and $N\pi\pi$ for physical quark mass values. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids of source and sink points is a versatile method of approximating all-to-all quark propagators that has been successfully used in other multi-hadron calculations. This work will discuss applications of this method to $N\pi$ and $N\pi\pi$ systems and present preliminary results.

Abstract:Within the framework of QCD sum rules, we use the least-squares fitting method to investigate the first radial excitations of the nucleon and light mesons such as rho, K*, pi, and phi. The extracted masses of these radial excitations are consistent with the experimental data. In particular, we find that the decay constant of pi(1300), which is the first radial excitation of pi, is tiny and is strongly suppressed as a consequence of chiral symmetry.

Abstract:Analyses of the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory predict that the nucleon may be understood primarily as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises mainly from two separate effects. One originates in non-Abelian facets of QCD that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate confined but strongly-correlated colour-antitriplet diquark clusters in both the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector–isotriplet channels. That attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation. Diquark clustering is driven by the same mechanism which dynamically breaks chiral symmetry in the Standard Model. It has numerous observable consequences, the complete elucidation of which requires a framework that also simultaneously expresses the running of the coupling and masses in the strong interaction. Planned experiments are capable of validating this picture.
