Abstract:I give a pedagogical introduction to the concepts and the tools that are necessary to study particle physics models in higher dimensions. I then give a more detailed presentation of warped compactifications and discuss their possible relevance to the hierarchy problem.

Abstract:Lowering the string scale in the TeV region provides a theoretical framework for solving the mass hierarchy problem and unifying all interactions. The apparent weakness of gravity can then be accounted by the existence of large internal dimensions, in the submillimeter region, and transverse to a braneworld where our universe must be confined. I review the main properties of this scenario and its implications for observations at both particle colliders, and in non-accelerator gravity experiments. Such effects are for instance the production of Kaluza-Klein resonances, graviton emission in the bulk of extra dimensions, and a radical change of gravitational forces in the submillimeter range. I also discuss the warped case and localization of gravity in the presence of infinite size extra dimensions.

The programs of the Extended Relativity in C-spaces: towards the physical foundations of String Theory

Abstract:An outline is presented of the Extended Scale Relativity (ESR) in C-spaces (Clifford manifolds), where the speed of light and the minimum Planck scale are the two universal invariants. This represents in a sense an extension of the theory developed by L. Nottale long ago. It is shown how all the dimensions of a C-space can be treated on equal footing by implementing the holographic principle associated with a nested family of p-loops of various dimensionalities. This is achieved by using poly-vector valued coordinates in C-spaces that encode in one stroke points, lines, areas, volumes,... In addition, we review the derivation of the minimal-length string uncertainty relations; the logarithmic corrections (valid in any dimension) to the black hole area-entropy relation. We also show how the higher derivative gravity with torsion and the recent results of kappa-deformed Poincare theories of gravity follow naturally from the geometry of C-spaces. In conclusion some comments are made on the cosmological implications of this theory with respect to the cosmological constant problem, the two modes of time, the expansion of the universe, number four as the average dimension of our world and a variable fine structure constant.

Unfolding Particle Physics Hierarchies with Supersymmetry and Extra Dimensions

Abstract:This is a written version of lectures delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future''. Mechanisms and symmetries beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are presented capable of elegantly and robustly generating the striking hierarchies we observe in particle physics. They are shown to be among the central archetypes of quantum effective field theory and to strongly resonate with the tight structure and phenomenology of the Standard Model itself, allowing one to motivate, develop and test a worthy successor. The (Little) Hiearchy Problem is discussed within this context. The lectures culminate in specific BSM case-studies, gaugino-mediated (dynamical) supersymmetry breaking to generate the weak/Planck hierarchy, and (in less detail) extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps to generate flavor hierarchies.

Abstract:We have argued that quantum mechanics and general relativity give a lower bound $\delta l \gtrsim l^{1/3} l_P^{2/3}$ on the measurement uncertainty of any distance $l$ much greater than the Planck length $l_P$. Recently Baez and Olson have claimed that one can go below this bound by attaching the measuring device to a massive elastic rod. Here we refute their claim. We also reiterate (and invite our critics to ponder on) the intimate relationship and consistency between black hole physics (including the holographic principle) and our bound on distance measurements.

Les Houches lecture notes on moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces

Abstract:In these lecture notes, we provide an introduction to the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, a fundamental concept in the theories of 2D quantum gravity, topological string theory, and matrix models. We begin by reviewing some basic results concerning the recursive boundary structure of the moduli space and the associated cohomology theory. We then present Witten's celebrated conjecture and its generalisation, framing it as a recursive computation of cohomological field theory correlators via topological recursion. We conclude with a discussion of JT gravity in relation to hyperbolic geometry and topological strings. These lecture notes accompanied a series of lectures at the Les Houches school "Quantum Geometry (Mathematical Methods for Gravity, Gauge Theories and Non-Perturbative Physics)" in Summer 2024.

Abstract:The standard picture of viable higher-dimensional theories is that extra dimensions manifest themselves at short distances only, their effects being negligible at scales larger than some critical value. We show that this is not necessarily true in models with infinite extra dimensions. As an example, we consider a five-dimensional scenario with three 3-branes in which gravity is five-dimensional both at short {\it and} very long distance scales, with conventional four-dimensional gravity operating at intermediate length scales. A phenomenologically acceptable range of validity of four-dimensional gravity extending from microscopic to cosmological scales is obtained without strong fine-tuning of parameters.

Abstract:We review the noncommutative approach to the standard model. We start with the introduction if the mathematical concepts necessary for the definition of noncommutative spaces, and manifold in particular. This defines the framework of spectral geometry. This is applied to the standard model of particle interaction, discussing the fermionic and bosonic spectral action. The issues relating to the calculation of the mass of the Higgs are discussed, as well as the role of neutrinos and Wick rotations. Finally, we present the possibility of solving the problem of the Higgs mass by considering a pregeometric grand symmetry.

Abstract:By combining swampland conjectures with observational data, it was recently suggested that the cosmological hierarchy problem (i.e. the smallness of the dark energy in Planck units) could be understood as an asymptotic limit in field space, corresponding to a decompactification of one extra (dark) dimension of a size in the micron range. In these Proceedings we examine the fundamental setting of this framework and discuss general aspects of the effective low energy theory inherited from properties of the overarching string theory. We then explore some novel phenomenology encompassing the dark dimension by looking at potential dark matter candidates, decoding neutrino masses, and digging into new cosmological phenomena.

Abstract:These lectures aim to provide a global picture of the spaces of consistent quantum supergravity theories and string vacua in higher dimensions. The lectures focus on theories in the even dimensions 10, 8, and 6. Supersymmetry, along with with anomaly cancellation and other quantum constraints, places strong limitations on the set of physical theories which can be consistently coupled to gravity in higher-dimensional space-times. As the dimensionality of space-time decreases, the range of possible supergravity theories and the set of known string vacuum constructions expand. These lectures develop the basic technology for describing a variety of string vacua, including heterotic, intersecting brane, and F-theory compactifications. In particular, a systematic presentation is given of the basic elements of F-theory. In each dimension, we summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the extent to which supergravity theories not realized in string theory can be shown to be inconsistent.

Constraints on Models with Warped Extra Dimensions

Abstract:It has been known for some time that warped extra dimensions offer a potential explanation of the large hierarchy that exists between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale. The majority of this work has focused on a five dimensional slice of AdS space. This thesis attempts to address the question, what possible spaces offer phenomenologically viable resolutions to this gauge hierarchy problem. In order for a space to offer a potential resolution to the hierarchy problem two conditions must be met: Firstly one should be able to demonstrate that the space can be stabilised such that a small effective electroweak scale (or large effective Planck scale) can be obtained. Secondly one must demonstrate that the space allows for a Kaluza Klein (KK) scale that is small enough such that one does not reintroduce a hierarchy in the effective theory. Here we focus on the second condition and examine the constraints, on the KK scale, coming from corrections to electroweak observables and flavour physics which arise when gauge fields propagate in an additional dimension. We study a large class of possible spaces of different geometries and dimensionalities. In five dimensions it is found that such constraints are generically large. In more than five dimensions it is found that a significant proportion of such spaces suffer from either a high density of KK modes or alternatively strongly coupled KK fields. The latter would not offer viable resolutions to the hierarchy problem. Models in which the Higgs propagates in the bulk are also studied, in the context of models with a `soft wall' and it is found these have significantly reduced constraints from flavour physics as well as a notion of a minimum fermion mass.

Abstract:We study higher-dimensional non-supersymmetric orbifold models where the Higgs field is identified with some internal component of a gauge field. We address two important and related issues that constitute severe obstacles towards model building within this type of constructions: the possibilities of achieving satisfactory Yukawa couplings and Higgs potentials. We consider models where matter fermions are localized at the orbifold fixed-points and couple to additional heavy fermions in the bulk. When integrated out, the latter induce tree-level non-local Yukawa interactions and a quantum contribution to the Higgs potential that we explicitly evaluate and analyse. The general features of these highly constrained models are illustrated through a minimal but potentially realistic five-dimensional example. Finally, we discuss possible cures for the persisting difficulties in achieving acceptable top and Higgs masses. In particular, we consider in some detail the effects induced in these models by adding localized kinetic terms for gauge fields.

Abstract:In this series of lectures I present a review of the geometric structures of supergravity in diverse dimensions mostly relevant to p-brane physics and to pinpoint the correspondence between the macroscopic and microscopic description of branes. In particular I review duality transformations, coset manifold structures and the general steps involved by the process of gauging supergravity lagrangians both with respect to compact, non compact and non semisimple groups. I focus specifically on the issue of the Domain Wall field theory correspondence and its relation with the gaugings of supergravity in p+2 dimensions. A complete review of the geometries involved by D=5, N=2 supergravity and of its most general form is given with emphasis on the problem of finding smooth supersymmetric realizations of the Randall Sundrum scenarios. I also give a general review of the algebraic machinery involved by the Solvable Lie algebra description of the scalar manifolds of supergravity and I emphasize its distinguished role in pinpointing the superstring interpretation of supergravity p brane solutions and the macroscopic/microscopic correspondence.

Unification of the Fundamental Forces in Higher-Order Riemannian Geometry

Abstract:In Part I of the present series of papers, we adumbrate our idea of Riemannian geometry to higher order in the infinitesimals and derive expressions for the appropriate generalizations of parallel transport and the Riemannian curvature tensor. In Part II, the implications of higher-order geometry for the general theory of relativity beyond Einstein are developed. In the present Part III, we expand on the framework of Part II so as to take up the problem of field-theoretical unification. Employing the form of the Einstein-Hilbert action to higher order as proposed in Part II, we show how in nearly flat space the higher-order terms give rise to a gauge theory of Yang-Mills type. At the 2-jet level, the electroweak force emerges after imposition of gauge fixing. In fact, the proposed form of the Einstein-Hilbert action permits us to say more: we argue that the equivalence principle results in a Proca term that brings about the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the standard model. Two empirical predictions support our reasoning: first, we obtain a theoretical value for the Weinberg angle and second, we find that -- without any adjustable parameters -- the implied value of Coulomb's constant agrees well with experiment. The final section examines the 3-jet level. The same mechanism that produces Glashow-Weinberg-Salam electroweak theory at the 2-jet level eventuates in a chromodynamical force having $SU(3)$ symmetry at the 3-jet level.

A New Perspective on Kaluza-Klein Theories

Abstract:By assuming that the geometry of spacetime is uniquely determined by the energy momentum tensor of matter alone, i.e. without any interactions, enables us to construct the Lagrangian from which the metric of higher dimensional spacetime follows. From the geodesic equations that follow it becomes clear that the incorrect mass of elementary particles predicted by Kaluza-Klein theories arises from the assumption that in the absence of gravity the solution to the Einstein field equations reduces to the Minkowski metric. From construction of a consistent theory of $4\mathcal{D}$ electromagnetism, we find that this assumption does not only result in the incorrect mass of elementary particles, but also the incorrect value of the cosmological constant. This suggests that these incorrect predictions, which are often regarded as major flaws of Kaluza-Klein theories, just reflects the inconsistency of some postulates of general relativity and gauge theories. Abandoning this assumption results in modifications of general relativity. We show that the unified description of fundamental interactions naturally incorporates the Higgs mechanism. For non-Abelian gauge fields, we find that the manifold comprising the extra dimensions has to be a group manifold and show that the standard model is realised in 16$\mathcal{D}$ spacetime. We show that charge and spin are the same concept, but what makes them different is that the former follows from symmetry of $4\mathcal{D}$ spacetime while the latter follows from symmetry of the internal space.

Abstract:We elaborate on a model of nonassociative and noncommutative Einstein--Dirac-Maxwell, EDM, theory determined by star product R-flux deformations in string theory. Solutions for nonassociative EDM systems and physical properties not studied in modern physics. For modifications of the four-dimensional, 4-d, Einstein gravity, we work on conventional nonassociative 8-d phase spaces modelled as star-deformed co-tangent Lorentz bundles. Generalizing the anholonomic frame and connection deformation method, the nonassociative EDM equations are decoupled and integrated in exact and parametric quasi-stationary forms. Corresponding generic off-diagonal metrics are described by nonlinear symmetries and encode nonassociative effective sources and generating functions depending on space and momentum-like coordinates. For respective nonholonomic parameterizations, such solutions describe nonassociative deformations of the Reissner-Nordström black holes. A variant of nonassociative phase space wormhole solution with fermions possessing anisotropic polarized masses is also analyzed. We conclude that such phase space physical objects can't be characterized using the concept of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and show how to compute another type (modified G. Perelman ones) nonassociative geometric and statistical thermodynamic variables.

Lectures on Naturalness, String Landscape and Multiverse

Abstract:The cosmological constant and electroweak hierarchy problem have been a great inspiration for research. Nevertheless, the resolution of these two naturalness problems remains mysterious from the perspective of a low-energy effective field theorist. The string theory landscape and a possible string-based multiverse offer partial answers, but they are also controversial for both technical and conceptual reasons. The present lecture notes, suitable for a one-semester course or for self-study, attempt to provide a technical introduction to these subjects. They are aimed at graduate students and researchers with a solid background in quantum field theory and general relativity who would like to understand the string landscape and its relation to hierarchy problems and naturalness at a reasonably technical level. Necessary basics of string theory are introduced as part of the course. This text will also benefit graduate students who are in the process of studying string theory at a deeper level. In this case, the present notes may serve as additional reading beyond a formal string theory course.

Extra Dimensions and Fuzzy Branes in String-inspired Nonlocal Field Theory

Abstract:Particle physics models with extra dimensions of space (EDS's) and branes shed new light on electroweak and flavor hierarchies with a rich TeV scale phenomenology. This article highlights new model building issues with EDS's and branes, arising in the framework of weakly nonlocal field theories. It is shown that a brane-localized field is still delocalized in the bulk on a small distance from the brane position: fields localized on such distant fuzzy branes are thus allowed to interact directly with suppressed couplings. Directions for model building are also given: (i) with fuzzy branes, a new realization of split fermions in an EDS is presented, naturally generating flavor hierarchies; (ii) with a warped EDS, the usual warp transmutation of a brane-localized mass term is revisited, where it is shown that the nonlocal scale is also redshifted and provides a smooth UV cutoff for the Higgs boson mass. This framework is expected to have natural UV completions in string theory, but the possibility to embed it in recent UV complete weakly nonlocal quantum field theories is commented.
