Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.

Abstract:The selective rhodium-catalyzed functionalization of arenes is greatly facilitated by oxidizing directing groups that act both as directing groups and internal oxidants. We report density functional theory (B3LYP and M06) investigations on the mechanism of rhodium(III)-catalyzed redox coupling reaction of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes. The results elucidated the role of the internal oxidizing directing group, and the role of Rh(III)/Rh(I) and Rh(III)/Rh(V) catalysis of C-H functionalizations. A novel Rh(III)-Rh(V)-Rh(III) cycle successfully rationalizes recent experimental observations by Liu and Lu et al. ( Liu , G. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013 , 52 , 6033 ) on the reactions of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes in different solvents. Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis confirms the identity of Rh(V) intermediate in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A systematic theoretical study of rhodium-catalyzed allylic alkylation reactions using hard benzylzinc nucleophiles was performed. The mechanisms were investigated in detail together with the regioselectivity associated with the branched and linear pathways and the intriguing anti - (as opposed to syn -) diastereoselectivity of this process. The preferred mechanism was found to be initiated by the oxidative addition of the rhodium(I) complex followed by migration of the benzyl nucleophile to the Rh center. The subsequent nucleophilic addition of a benzyl group to the η 3 -allyl moiety takes place via the formation of a new C–C bond to afford the final allylic benzylation product. This proposed mechanism readily explains the experimental observation that the products obtained from such reactions are branched (as opposed to linear) with an anti -configuration (as opposed to a syn -configuration). This work also provides reasons for the lower regioselectivity observed for a OCO 2 t Bu leaving group or cyanophenyl/secondary amide substituents at the 4-position of the substrate. The present study is expected to assist in the rational design of potential substrates for analogous reactions.

Abstract:Stereoselectivity control and understanding in the metal-catalyzed reactions are fundamental issues in catalysis. Here we report sterically controlled rhodium-catalyzed S N 2’-type substitution reactions of optically active tertiary propargylic alcohols with arylmetallic species affording the non-readily available enantioenriched tetrasubstituted allenes via either exclusive syn - or anti - β -OH elimination, respectively, under two sets of different reaction parameters. Detailed mechanistic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) studies reveal that the exclusive anti -Rh(I)-OH elimination is dictated by the simultaneous aid of in situ generated boric acid and ambient water, which act as the shuttle in the hydroxy relay to facilitate the Rh(I)-OH elimination process via a unique ten-membered cyclic transition state ( anti - TS2_u ). By contrast, the syn -Rh(III)-OH elimination in C–H bond activation-based allenylation reaction is controlled by a four-membered cyclic transition state ( syn- TS3 ) due to the steric surroundings around the Rh(III) center preventing the approach of the other assisting molecules. Under the guidance of these mechanistic understandings, a stereodivergent protocol to construct the enantiomer of optically active tetrasubstituted allenes from the same starting materials is successfully developed.

Abstract:In this study, M11-L was used to evaluate the feasibility of the formation of rhodium(V) species using the rhodium( III)-catalyzed ortho-bromination of arenes as a model reaction. In most cases for these types of reactions, DFT calculations reveal that the bromination step involves a Br transfer from N-bromosuccinimide to the reacting arylrhodium to form a bromonium intermediate, followed by a Br shift to generate a new C-Br bond, which is more favorable than the previously proposed Rh-III/Rh-V catalytic cycle. The rhodium catalyst remains in its +3 oxidation state throughout. The substituent effects of the reacting arene were studied, and computational results showed that the introduction of electron-donating groups on the reacting arene was favorable for this pathway. In contrast, the inclusion of a strong electron-withdrawing group on the aromatic ring would hinder the formation of a bromonium intermediate. Therefore, the Rh-III/Rh-V catalytic cycle is favorable in cases that involve a Rh-V intermediate, which is generated by oxidative addition with NBS. In this pathway, the C-Br bond is formed by reductive elimination from the RhV intermediate. Additionally, a distortion-interaction analysis model along the reaction pathway was used to explain the directing-group effects. The results showed that the interaction energy controlled the reactivity because of the difference in electronic nature of various directing groups.

Abstract:The rhodium(III)-catalyzed aryl borrowing amination of various diaryl methanols with sulfonamides have been developed. The amination of alcohols via C-C bond activation is less developed and remains a challenge. These aryl borrowing reactions feature mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and compatibility with a wide range of alcohols, overall comprising an atom- and step-economic procedure. Abstract:The synthesis of a novel type of chiral spiro monophosphite-olefin (SMPO) ligands based on a hexamethyl-1,1'-spirobiindane scaffold was accomplished starting from Bisphenol C. The optimal ligand could serve as an elegant chiral bidentate ligand in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric 1,2-addition of organoboronic acids to various acyclic/cyclic aldimines, leading to chiral amines with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Detailed stereochemical models for enantioselective induction were elucidated through DFT calculations and postulated the origins of the higher enantioselectivity of phosphite-olefin ligands.

Abstract:Cobalt-bisoxazolinephosphine-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective allylic amination of racemic n-propyl allylic carbonate and aniline was investigated by DFT calculations at the ωB97XD/6–31G(d,p) level (SDD for Co). The computational results revealed that cobalt-catalyzed allylic amination underwent mainly through oxidative addition of n-propyl allylic carbonate, coordination of aniline to cobalt, hydrogen migration, isomerization of allyl group, and reductive elimination. The oxidative addition of n-propyl allylic carbonate was the rate-determining step, the reductive elimination was the regioselectivity-limited and enantioselectivity-controlling step, and the most favorable product was of ( R )-chirality, which was compatible with the experimental results. The oxidative addition, hydrogen migration, reductive elimination, and the reactivity of racemic n-propyl allylic carbonates were discussed at full length in this text.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective rhodium-catalyzed hydrogenation of both (Z)- and (E)-β-arylenamides was developed by using monodentate chiral spiro phosphite and phosphine ligands, respectively. The hydrogenation reaction provides an efficient access to optically active β-arylisopropylamines, important building blocks for the synthesis of biologically active compounds.

Abstract:Despite the current progress achieved in asymmetric hydroacylations, highly enantioselective catalytic addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes remains an unsolved challenge. Here, using a coordination-assisted strategy, we developed a rhodium-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes such as enamides and β,γ-unsaturated amides. Valuable α-amino ketones and 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds were directly obtained with high enantioselectivity from readily available materials.

Abstract:Asymmetric propargylic substitution (APS) reactions play a crucial role in synthesizing the fundamental structural units found in natural drug molecules and macromolecules. However, achieving both high yields and enantioselectivity in the synthesis of asymmetric alkynyl propyl compounds remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we present a comprehensive computational study of asymmetric alkynyl propyl hydroxyaminations catalyzed by a chiral phosphine-nickel complex. The entire catalysis can be outlined as three stages: (i) Propargylic carbonate 1a activation by the (S)-L1/Ni(0)-catalyst, results in the Ni(II)-intermediate IM2A. (ii) IM2A undergoes decarboxylation process, leading to the Ni(II)-complex IM5A. (iii) IM5A suffers asymmetric propargylic substitution with N-hydroxyphthalimide 2a gives the more stable Ni(0)-complex IM7A, followed by product (S)-3a liberation and IM1A regeneration for the next catalytic cycle with the assistance of another equiv 1a. The asymmetric propargylic substitution step, with a barrier of 21.4 kcal/mol, should be the rate-determining step and enantioselectivity-determining step during the whole catalysis. EDA-NOCV analysis revealed that the origins of the enantioselectivity of product (S)-3a lies in the combination effects of the ligand-substrate electrostatic interactions, orbital interactions, Pauli repulsions, and dispersion interactions. Based on mechanistic study, new biaryl bisphosphine ligand (i.e., (S)-L6) affording higher enantioselectivity was designed, which will help to improve current catalytic systems and facilitate the development of new Ni-catalyzed asymmetric alkynyl propyl hydroxyaminations.
