Abstract:Statement of problem Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials have become popular for dental restorations; however, which materials should be preferred in terms of surface properties after biofilm formation is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of biofilm formation on the discoloration properties of resin-infiltrated ceramic and glass ceramic CAD-CAM materials and human teeth and to examine the effect of the brushing procedure on color change. Material and methods One hundred and six 2-mm-thick specimens were prepared from IPS e.max CAD and Cerasmart, and a total of 53 intact human teeth were used. Five specimens from each group were used to measure the amount of live biomass in the biofilm. The remaining 48 specimens in each group were divided into 4 subgroups: kept in distilled water without the formation of dental biofilm (DW), kept in tea without the formation of dental biofilm (T), kept in distilled water after the formation of dental biofilm (DWB), and kept in tea after the formation of dental biofilm (TB) (n=12). After finishing and polishing the materials, initial color measurements were made using a spectrophotometer, and surface roughness measurements were made using noncontact profilometer. After creating a biofilm layer in DWB and TB, all specimens were kept in their solutions at 37 °C for 24 hours, and the color measurements were repeated. After the biofilm layer had been removed by brushing, a third color measurement was made. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results The lowest roughness value was observed in Cerasmart. Tooth-IPS e.max CAD gave similar results. The Cerasmart material had the most viable biomass, whereas the IPS e.max CAD material had the least. TB had the highest ΔE1 value for all materials and DW had the lowest ( P <.05). The brushing procedure caused the materials to return to their initial colors or reduce the color change in most groups. Conclusions The presence of biofilm on CAD-CAM materials immersed in distilled water caused an unacceptable degree of discoloration (ΔE>1.8), and immersion in tea led to greater color change. The adhesion of biofilm to restorative dental materials plays an important role in the coloring of these dental materials.

Evaluation of the optical and surface properties of monolithic CAD-CAM ceramics after simulated tooth-brushing

Abstract:Statement of problem: Monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) ceramics have various microstructures, but studies on their optical and surface properties after tooth-brushing are lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the changes in the color, gloss, surface roughness, and surface topography of different monolithic CAD-CAM ceramics after simulated tooth-brushing and compare the tested parameters of the different ceramics. Material and methods: Ninety specimens were prepared with a 1.5-mm thickness from 9 different materials: monolithic zirconia (ZR), lithium disilicate ceramics (precrystallized and crystallized), zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramics (precrystallized and crystallized), interpenetrating network ceramic, leucite reinforced ceramic, feldspathic ceramic, and interpenetrating network nanoceramics (n=10). After mechanical polishing, the color parameters, gloss, and surface roughness values of each specimen were measured. Then, the specimens were subjected to 50 000 tooth-brushing cycles. After the brushing simulation, the color change (ΔE00) values were calculated, and the gloss and surface roughness values of the specimens were measured. Data were statistically analyzed with 2-way repeated measures of ANOVA and Bonferroni multiple comparison tests (α=.05). Results: The brushing simulation and ceramic type affected the gloss and surface roughness values of the tested ceramics (P<.001). The surface roughness values of the ceramics increased after 50 000 cycles of simulated brushing. The surface gloss of the ZR group significantly increased after 50 000 cycles of simulated brushing (P<.001). Only the ceramic type affected the color change values (P<.001). The color change value (ΔE00) of ZR was the highest among the tested materials, exceeding the perceptibility threshold after 50 000 cycles, while the ΔE00 of the other materials was lower. Conclusions: Simulated tooth-brushing affected the surface gloss and surface roughness of the tested materials. The ceramic type affected the surface gloss, surface roughness, and color change values. Except for the monolithic zirconia, the color change values were below the perceptibility threshold (0.8) in the experimental groups.
Effect of Brushing with Whitening Toothpaste on Color Stability and Surface Roughness of Color-Adjustment Resin-Based Composites

Abstract:Objectives: Aim of this study is to compare the color stability and surface roughness of four different color-adjustment composites produced using smart chromatic technology and a highly esthetic nano-hybrid composite after brushing with whitening toothpaste. Materials and Methods: 4 different color adjustment composites and 1 nano hybrid composite are divided into 5 main groups according to their contents. A total of 120 disc-shaped specimens (8 x 2 mm) were prepared, 24 in each group. The prepared samples were sequentially kept in solutions (tea, coffee and cherry juice) for 12 days and randomly divided into 3 subgroups (n=8). Subgroup 1, brushing with distilled water; Subgroup 2, brushing with whitening toothpaste; Subgroup 3, home bleaching agent were applied (14 days). Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer, ΔE values were calculated using the CIELAB formula. Surface roughness values were made using a profilometer device. Samples from each group were selected for SEM surface analysis. Results: Among the composite groups, the highest coloration was observed in the Omnichroma, while the lowest ΔE values were observed in the Vittra composite group. Although the ΔE values on the 14th day were higher than the 7th day in all groups, the differences between them were statistically insignificant(p>0.05) In all composite groups (except Omnichroma), the ΔE values of brushing with whitening toothpaste at the end of the 14th day were higher than brushing with distilled water(p<0.05). Conclusions: Although the application of home bleaching agent was found to be more effective in a short time in whitening color-adjustment composites; brushing with whitening toothpaste at the end of the 14th day was found to be as effective as the application of home bleaching agent. Coloring and bleaching procedures applied to color-adjustment restorative materials did not have a significant negative effect on surface roughness values.
Effect of an Optical Whitening Toothpaste on Color Stability of Tooth-Colored Restorative Materials

Abstract:Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effect of an optical whitening toothpaste on color stability of microhybrid, nanofilled, and microfilled composite resins and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement in comparison of two other toothpastes. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, disc-shaped composite samples were fabricated. The samples were then polished using silicon carbide papers. Twenty-seven samples of each material were fabricated and subjected to colorimetry using a spectrophotometer. Each group of material was then divided into three subgroups for the application of conventional whitening and whitening containing blue covarine toothpastes. One operator brushed the samples with an electric soft toothbrush with circular motion twice a day, each time for 30 seconds. Colorimetry was performed at 0, 1, 7, 30, and 90 days. Statistical Analysis Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test were used for statistical analysis. Results The interaction effect of type of restorative material and time on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p > 0.05). The effect of type of toothpaste on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p = 0.78) but the effect of type of material was significant (p < 0.05). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z250 at all time points (p < 0.05) except for ∆E0–30 (p = 0.106). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z350 and Gradia at all time points (p < 0.05). The same was true for RMGI except for ∆E0–7 (p = 0.43) and ∆E0–90 (p = 0.52). The majority of color changes caused by toothpastes were not clinically perceivable (∆E < 3.3), except for ∆E0–90 by the whitening toothpaste (∆E = 9), ∆E0–90 by the conventional toothpaste for Z350 (∆E = 3.9), and ∆E0–1 by the whitening toothpaste for RMGI (∆E = 3.7). Conclusion The color change of all composite samples was not clinically perceivable (<3.3) at all time points, which shows that the tested toothpastes do not cause a significant change in color of composite materials.
Effects of two dentifrices on the surface properties and staining susceptibility of polymer-based materials

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined the effect of whitening and abrasive regular dentifrices on the surface characteristics and stain susceptibility of polymer-based CAD-CAM blocks subjected to artificial toothbrushing abrasion (TB). Materials and methods: Two resin composite blocks [CeraSmart (CS) and Grandio Blocs (GB)], one polymer-infiltrated ceramic [Vita Enamic (VE)], and one direct resin composite [GrandioSO (RC)] were used to produce 60 specimens. The baseline mass, gloss, roughness, Vickers hardness (Hv), and color were measured after 7 days of water storage. The specimens were then separated into three TB treatment groups (n = 5): water control (C), regular daily dentifrice (R), and whitening dentifrice (W). Measurements were repeated post-TB (20,000 cycles). All specimens were immersed in coffee, and the CIE ΔE00 was measured after 1, 7, and 14 days. Two-way, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post hoc tests were performed to determine any significant differences between the materials and TB groups. To determine the stain resistance, repeated measures of ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post hoc tests were used (α = 0.05). Results: The R and W mass changes were minimal (-3.77 to 3.16 g%). W reduced the gloss of all the materials by 12.6%-65%. All materials in W were slightly rougher (Ra, 0.107-0.144 μm) than those in R (Ra, 0.049-0.072 μm). The ΔE00 ranged from 0.6 to 1.6 in W and 0.4 to 1.4 in R. VE was the hardest material at baseline (Hv = 362), whereas brushing and staining lowered Hv in all TB groups (282.8-300.6). After brushing in W, VE, and RC were more susceptible to coffee stains than were CS and GB. Conclusions: The whitening dentifrice roughened CAD-CAM specimens, reducing gloss, yet lightened some materials. Polymer-infiltrated ceramic and direct resin composite specimens brushed with abrasive regular or whitening dentifrice resulted in more intense staining than the CAD-CAM resin composites.

Colour stability of stained composite resins after brushing with whitening toothpaste

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of brushing with whitening toothpaste on the colour change of composite resins discoloured with coffee. Methods: Disc-shaped samples were prepared using one nano-hybrid (Clearfil Majesty Esthetic), one micro-hybrid (GC G-aenial Anterior) and one nano-ceramic composite (Zenit) (n = 6). After initial colour measurements, the samples were coloured in the coffee solution for 5 days. Colour measurements were made again after the colouring process, and brushing simulation was applied for 7, 15 and 30 days with two different whitening toothpastes containing calcium carbonate+perlite (Signal whitening system, SWN) and hydrated silica+hydrogen peroxide (Colgate optic White, COW) and a conventional non-whitening toothpaste containing hydrated silica (Sensodyne pronamel, SPN). Colour change (∆E00 ) after brushing was calculated using the CIEDE2000 system. Repeated measures variance analysis was used for the analysis of data. Results: G-aenial anterior and Zenit showed significant coloration compared to Majesty esthetic after coloration with coffee (p < 0.05). The colour change in all composite resins was above the clinically acceptable limit (ΔE00 > 1.8). Colour change over time after brushing with both whitening toothpastes differed significantly (p < 0.05). SWN and COW exhibited a significantly higher whitening effect than SPN (p < 0.05). While there was no significant difference in composite groups brushed with the SWS (p > 0.05), there was a significant difference between Majesty esthetic, G-aenial anterior and Zenit in groups brushed with COW (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Colour change was high in micro-hybrid and nano-ceramic composites which were discoloured in coffee. The whitening toothpastes were effective in reducing the coloration caused by coffee.

Abstract:Objective : To compare the shear bond strength values of current CAD/CAM materials and to evaluate the color changes resulting from immersion in coloring solutions. Material and Methods: A total of 160 specimens were prepared from 4 CAD/CAM blocks; lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS E.max CAD[EC]), zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (Vita Suprinity[VS]), polimer infitrated glass ceramic (Vita Enamic[VE]) and hybrid ceramic (GC Cerasmart [GC]). The ceramic specimens were immersed in tea, coffee, cherry juice and distilled water solutions. Color measurements were made. To compare the shear bond strength values, all specimens were bonded to resin cement. Then the specimens were aged with 5000 thermocycling. The failure modes were classified according to stereomicroscope analysis and than scanning electron microscopy images for surface topography were obtained. Results: The color change values were significantly greater in coffee compared to other solutions and the highest color change was seen in GC and VE. The highest bond strength values were seen in VS and VE. The shear bond strength values are listed as follows: VS>VE>EC>CS. Conclusions: EC and VS can be used, especially in aesthetic restorations, due to their high color stability. Additionally, considering the bond strength values of VS, it appears to be a highly satisfactory material.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of whitening toothpaste on the surface roughness of resin-based restorative materials by different measurement methods. Twenty four specimens from each of human enamel, a microhybrid composite and two nanohybrid composites discs (8.0 diameter × 4.0 mm thick) were divided into two groups (n = 12) according to toothbrushing solutıon and subjected to simulation toothbrushing (30,000 cycles) with both distilled water and whitening toothpaste containing blue covarine. Surface roughness was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometer, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the data obtained were subjected to analysis. Ra values of Tescera (TES) were significantly higher than Sonicfill 2 (SF2) when brushing both toothbrushing solutions for initial or 30,000 cycles. Roughness increased for SF2 and TES when brushed for 30,000 cycles and was higher than enamel and Herculite XRV Ultra (HXU). Human enamel was obtained lower surface roughness values brushed with toothpaste compared with distilled water. Evaluation of the surface roughness of control groups using the AFM revealed no statistically significant difference between the groups, but significant differences were found using a profilometer. The use of abrasive whitening toothpaste containing blue covarine and the number of brushing cycles affect the surface properties of human enamel and the restorative material, and also, the clinical success of the restoration. Toothbrushing for 30,000 cycles increased the surface roughness of all materials. The type of toothbrushing solution partially has affected surface roughness.

INFLUENCE OF AGING, BEVERAGES, AND MOUTH WASH SOLUTIONS ON THE MICROSTRUCTURAL AND COLOR STABILITY OF DIFFERENT DENTAL CERAMICS: AN IN VITRO STUDY

Abstract:Рurроse - to evaluate the influence of aging, beverages, and mouthwash solutions on the microstructural and color stability of three CAD/CAM ceramic materials. In total, 87 specimens (7×5×1.5 mm) were prepared from 3 CAD/CAM ceramic groups, Lithium Disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), Extra translucent zirconia (VITA YZ), and Resin Nanoceramic (Cerasmart 270). All the materials were A2 or equivalent shades. After hydrothermal aging in distilled water at 5 C to 55 C for (10.000 cycles). The samples were randomly allocated into 3 groups (n=27) and immersion (staining) for one week in 3 different solutions coffee, green tea, and chlorhexidine. The baseline measurements of ceramic discs were recorded for color change and 2 samples of each group sent for SEM (microstructure) images before aging and staining. The second measurement was recorded after 10000 thermocycling and immersion in staining agents for 7 days. Statistical analysis were performed with an independent Kruskal-wallis test . The significant level was set at P≤0.05. ∆E values for lithium Disilicate after immersion in coffee, green tea and chlorhexidine gluconate were 3.167, 1.847 and 2.022, respectively. corresponding ∆E values for VITA XT were 3.438, 4.201 and 2.267. meanwhile Cerasmart shows more sensitivity for staining than LD and VITA of 4.454, 2.926 and 2.933. Within limitation of this study lithium disilicate showed the best color stability with values less than perception threshold. VITA and Cerasmart show higher sensitivity for staining with VITA more affected by green tea (Higher than clinically accepted threshold) and Cerasmart more affected by coffee (higher than clinically accepted threshold).
Effect of surface sealant on the color stability and whiteness index of single-shade resin composites after staining and bleaching

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of polishing systems and surface sealant on the color stability and whiteness index of single-shade resin composites after staining and bleaching. Materials and methods: Three single-shade (Omnichroma, Charisma Diamond One, Zenchroma) and one multi-shade (Filtek Z250) materials were tested. From each resin composite, 40 specimens were prepared. The specimens were divided into 4 subgroups (n = 10) according to the surface treatments: 1-step polishing, 1-step + Biscover LV, 2-step polishing, and 2-step polishing + Biscover LV. Color differences (ΔE00) were calculated after being immersed in the coffee solution for 12 days. After the staining, the specimens were immersed in a whitening mouthrinse (Crest-3D White) for 12 hours. Whiteness index differences (∆WID = WID after staining - WID after bleaching) values were recorded. The generalized linear model was used for analysis (p < 0.05). Results: The lowest and highest ΔE00 values were found for Zenchroma and Charisma Diamond One respectively. Sealed groups indicated higher ΔE00 values than nonsealed groups with significant differences (p = 0.008). The lowest and highest ΔWID values were found for Zenchroma and Charisma Diamond One respectively. Sealed groups indicated lower ΔWID values than nonsealed groups with significant differences (p = 0.022). Conclusions: The use of surface sealant increased the discoloration and showed less whiteness change in resin materials. When the 1-step was compared with the 2-step polishing, the effects on the color stability and whiteness index values of the resin materials were similar.
EFFECT OF DIFFERENT WHITENING TOOTHPASTES ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF YOUNG HUMAN ENAMEL

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the whitening toothpastes effect of surface roughness in young permanent human enamel. Methods: In this in vitro study, 100 premolars were sectioned, mounted and stored. All teeth were divided into 10 experimental groups (n=10). The specimens were brushed 3600 cycles (equivalent 12-week brushing) with a brushing machine using 25 g of each toothpaste mixed with 40 ml of distilled water. The surface profile of the teeth was measured a profilometric device before and after brushing, respectively. Each teeth surface roughness measured three times and averaged. Results: In five groups which toothpastes containing bromelain, nano hydroxyapatite, silica, blue covarine and charcoal the decrease in surface roughness was found statistically significant (p<0.05), except toothpastes groups containing hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, microbeads, hydroxyapatite and water. In toothpastes groups containing hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide and microbeads group’s surface roughness values were increased but not statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of initial and after brushing surface roughness values. Conclusion: According to the results of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide and microbeads based whitening toothpastes increased the surface roughness of young permanent human tooth; had not provide smoother surface on tooth after 3600 cycles brushing. This study emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to be aware of the whitening products usage for teenagers and make evidence-based decisions when recommending the product to patients.
Changes to Glazed Dental Ceramic Shade, Roughness, and Microhardness after Bleaching and Simulated Brushing

Abstract:PURPOSE: To evaluate shade stability, surface roughness, microhardness, and compressive strength of a glazed feldspathic ceramic subjected to bleaching and simulated brushing.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-eight glazed feldspathic ceramic specimens were made from microparticulate leucite and divided into eight groups (n = 10). The whitening products used were: Opalescence Trèswhite Supreme (Ultradent), Opalescence®\ PF 15% (Ultradent), and Oral-B 3D White Whitestrips. All substances for whitening were used for 4 hours/day for a period of 14 days; the control group was not bleached. Next, half of the specimens were individually brushed. Microhardness and surface roughness data were subjected to three-way ANOVA and Tukey test. The diametrical tensile strength data were subjected to two-way ANOVA. The shade change data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and the Student-Newman-Keuls test. The significance level was set at 5%.RESULTS: Glazed feldspathic ceramic surface microhardness was significantly affected by bleaching agents (p = 0.007). Initially, glazed ceramic microhardness was significantly higher than that observed after contact with the bleaching agents, whether or not brushing was performed. The specimens submitted to bleaching in preloaded trays presented lower surface roughness values after brushing (p = 0.037). The surface roughness was significantly lower in the brushed specimens (p = 0.044). The diametrical tensile strength was not significantly affected by the application of bleaching agents (p = 0.563) or by brushing (p = 0.477). When the specimens were brushed, however, shade change was significantly influenced by the bleaching agent used (p = 0.041).CONCLUSIONS: Bleaching agents associated with brushing cycles can alter surface properties and shade stability of glazed feldspathic ceramics, though such findings may not reflect the performance of unglazed feldspathic ceramics.
Assessment of color stability and translucency of various CAD/CAM ceramics of different compositions and Thicknesses: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Translucency and optical characteristics significantly affect the aesthetics of ceramic restorations. The introduction of new virgilite crystals to novel ceramic advanced lithium disilicate through a matrix firing process enhances the material's strength and aesthetic quality according to the manufacturer. Materials and methods: Four types of CAD/CAM ceramics; lithium disilicate (LD), leucite reinforced (LR), advanced lithium disilicate (ALD), and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) exposed to different staining solutions (tea, cola, coffee, and distilled water). Each ceramic type had 120 specimens, divided into subgroups based on thickness (0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 1.5 mm). Color changes (ΔE00) and translucency parameters (TP00) were measured after thermocycling, and spectrophotometry was employed to evaluate ΔE00 and TP00 after 1, 7, and 30 days of exposure to the staining solutions. Results: ZLS exhibited the lowest color stability, while lithium LD and ALD displayed the highest. Thickness significantly affected color stability, with 0.5 mm thickness showing the least change. The duration of exposure also impacted color changes, with 30 days causing the most significant shift. LD demonstrated the highest translucency. Coffee and tea induced more pronounced reductions in translucency and color stability compared to the control group. Conclusions: Material structure, thickness, staining solution, and exposure duration significantly influenced the color stability and translucency of CAD/CAM ceramics, with LD and ALD demonstrating superior color stability and LD exhibiting the highest translucency.
Effects of charcoal-based whitening toothpastes on human enamel in terms of color, surface roughness, and microhardness: an in vitro study

Abstract:ObjectiveCharcoal based oral care products have gained popularity in the last few years. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the effects of different charcoal based whitening toothpastes on color, surface roughness and microhardness of human enamel.Materials and methodsForty-eight specimens obtained from human permanent upper incisor teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups(n=12):Group-1:Colgate Total 12(CT); Group-2:Body Kingdom(BK); Group-3:Black is White(BW), Group-4:Colgate optic white(COW). Following 4 days cycle of darkening(2-min chlorhexidine and 60-min black tea per day), a 12- week brushing(twice daily for 1 min)was performed. Color of specimens was measured using a spectrophotometer. A contact type profilometer was used to measure surface roughness (Ra) and Vicker's hardness tester was used for the changes in microhardness(VHN). A representative sample from each group was visualized by SEM. Data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Welch, Fisher's, Kruskall-Wallis, Wilcoxon Sign Rank and Paired t-tests(p0.05).Only few scratches were observed on the enamel surfaces by SEM evaluations.ConclusionTwelve week brushing with charcoal based whitening toothpastes and a regular fluoridated toothpaste presented similar effects in color of enamel. Surface roughness was increased(except BW) while microhardness was not affected(except CT) with charcoal based whitening toothpastes.Clinical relevanceCharcoal based whitening toothpastes do not promise to whiten the human permanent teeth and their effects on enamel abrasion should not be disregarded.

Effects of different surface treatments on stainability of ceramics

Abstract:Statement of problem: Final adjustments may result in a loss of ceramic glaze, a situation which must be corrected by reglazing or polishing to obtain clinically successful restorations; such restorations may be susceptible to staining. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the stainability of ceramics exposed to coffee after different surface treatments and to correlate the surface roughness with the color differences. Material and methods: Sixty-six ceramic (IPS e.maxCeram) disks (15 × 2 mm) were fabricated and glazed according to the manufacturer's instructions, then assigned to 6 groups. Group Glaze (Group G), the control, was not subjected to any procedure. All the others were abraded with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. Group Reglaze (Group R) was reglazed; others were polished with different polishing materials; Group Shofu (Group S) was polished with abrasive stone (Dura-Green Stones), coarse silicon polisher (Ceramaster Coarse), silicon polisher (CeraMaster), and polishing paste (Ultra II) with polishing disks (Super-Snap Buff Disks); Group Ultradent (Group U) was polished with 1.0 and 0.5-μm polishing pastes (Ultradent Diamond) with a goat hair brush (Jiffy) and Group Bredent (Group B) was polished with an abrasive stone (Diagen turbo grinder), a round polishing brush (Abraso-fix), and polishing paste (Diamond) with felt wheels. Group Diamond rotary cutting instrument (Group D) was not treated after abrasion with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. Surface roughness was evaluated by profilometer (n=10), and 1 specimen from each group was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Color difference was measured by a spectrophotometer before and after 12 days of immersion in a coffee solution. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, the Tukey HSD test, and the Pearson rank correlation tests (α=.05). Results: The surface roughness (Ra) values were ordered from the highest to the lowest value, which were Group D, B, U, S, R, and G, respectively. Significant differences among groups (P<.01) were found, except for G and R. There were no significant differences between the color difference values of Groups G and R, both of which were significantly lower than the other groups (P<.01). Group D showed the highest ΔE values (>2), which is considered clinically unacceptable (P<.01). No significant differences were found among the S, U, and B groups. There was an 83% positively significant relationship between Ra and ΔE values (P<.01). Rough surfaces stained more after coffee immersion than did smooth surfaces. Conclusions: Surface treatments affected surface roughness and color stability. Smooth surfaces showed better color stability after discoloration. Ceramic staining may be related to surface texture changes after different surface treatments.

Abstract:Dental technology has developed materials for prosthetics that are very similar to natural teeth and offer a good balance between durability and esthetics; however, some of these materials are not very color-stable under the influence of external factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine and compare the color change (∆E00) of different esthetic monolithic monochromatic CAD/CAM materials after they have been thermocycled and treated with staining solutions. The color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer on a white and black background. Five CAD/CAM materials were used for this study—CAD/CAM nanoceramic (GC Cerasmart270), CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), CAD/CAM polymer (Telio CAD), CAD/CAM composite (Tetric CAD) and CAD/CAM polymer-infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic). The test specimens produced were divided into groups and were thermocycled in distilled water. They were then stored for four weeks at 37 °C in either distilled water as a control liquid, black tea, instant coffee or red wine. The aim is also to evaluate the color changes as a function of the exposure time of the staining solutions. The results obtained were analyzed statistically. All CAD/CAM materials tend to discolor to varying degrees. Among the factors contributing to discoloration, red wine proved to be the most significant influencing factor. The conclusion from the results is that the color change is influenced by the type of material, the staining solution, the sample thickness, the color background and the aging time.

Effects of Different Concentrations of Carbamide Peroxide on Color, Surface Roughness, and Hardness of CAD/CAM Dental Ceramics

Abstract:Objectives: This study assessed the effects of 15% and 20% carbamide peroxide (CP) on color, surface roughness, and hardness of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) dental ceramics. Materials and methods: This in vitro study was conducted on 120 Vita Mark II, Celtra Duo, and Suprinity CAD/CAM ceramic specimens. The ceramic specimens in each group (n = 40) were randomly assigned to two subgroups (n = 20) for polishing and glazing, and their baseline color, surface roughness (Ra), and hardness were assessed. In each subgroup, half of the specimens were exposed to 15% CP, while the other half were exposed to 20% CP. Their color change (ΔE), surface roughness, and hardness were then measured again. Surface roughness, hardness, and color were analyzed sequentially by profilometer, Vickers hardness tester, and spectrophotometer, respectively. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and post hoc Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). Results: The surface roughness of all groups significantly increased after bleaching treatment (p < 0.05). Surface hardness of all groups decreased after bleaching treatment, but this reduction was only significant in Vita Mark II subgroups (glazed, polished, 15%, and 20% CP). The ΔE was not clinically and visually perceivable in any group. Conclusion: The present results revealed that concentration of CP and type of surface treatment affected the surface properties of CAD/CAM ceramics. Type of surface treatment only affected the surface hardness of Vita Mark II ceramics (p < 0.05). Concentration of CP had a significant effect only on polished Vita Mark II.

Abstract:Background: The effect of an immune-boosting beverage (SAM) containing Sambucus Nigra, an energy beverage (ENE), an in-office bleaching (BLE) agent with 25% hydrogen peroxide superior, glazing (GLA) or polishing (POL) methods, and professional dental prophylaxis (PDP) on the color of CAD-CAM restorative materials is unknown. Methods: In total 210 specimens were prepared, consisting of CAD-CAM feldspathic (FC), zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate ceramic (ZLS) and hybrid ceramic (HC). The ceramic specimens were divided according to the polishing methods of glazing (GLA) and mechanical polishing (POL). All materials were divided into two groups: with and without BLE. A 25% hydrogen peroxide superior (HPS) gel was used for BLE. After the baseline (BAS) measurement, the specimens were immersed in 3 different beverages (distilled water (DIS), SAM, ENE). After 28 days, a fine-grained (RDA 7) prophylaxis paste was applied. Statistical analysis of ∆E00 color difference values was performed by 3-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). Results: The effect of all other actions except material-BLE-beverage on color for BAS-Day 28 was statistically different (p < 0.05). The effect of material, material-BLE, beverage on color for Day 28-PDP was statistically different (p < 0.05). After 28 days, the lowest color change was found in FC-GLA and HC immersed in DIS (p = 0.0001) and the highest in FC-POL immersed in ENE (p = 0.0002). PDP was efficient in color recovery in HC immersed to DIS, ENE and SAM (p = 0.0010). For FC, HC and ZLS, BLE caused a higher color change (p < 0.0001). Regardless of the material, the highest color change for BLE-beverage was found in BLE-treated specimens immersed in ENE (p = 0.0496) and the lowest color change was found in non-BLE-treated specimens immersed in SAM (p = 0.0074). Conclusions: In materials pre-exposed to 25% HPS, the effect of PDP on color recovery was lower than in unexposed materials. After 28 days, mechanical polishing produced higher color change in FC than glazing, however, in ZLS effects of glazing and mechanical polishing on color were similar. For material/polishing method, HC was the most effective. ENE caused higher color change than DIS and SAM. PDP was more effective than ENE in restoring color to DIS- and SAM-immersed specimens.

Abstract:Purpose Dental ceramics deteriorate as a result of thermal aging and exposure to acidic solutions, which change their microhardness and surface roughness. This study assessed the resistance of several computer‐aided design and computer‐aided manufacturing (CAD‐CAM) restorative dental materials in terms of surface roughness and microhardness following exposure to acidic solutions and thermal aging. Materials and Methods Five different monolithic CAD‐CAM restorative materials, two leucite‐reinforced glass ceramics (G‐Ceram and CEREC Blocs), a zirconia‐infiltrated lithium silicate (Celtra Duo), a resin nanoceramic (Grandio), and monolithic zirconia (inCoris TZI), were used to create 2‐mm‐thick rectangular specimens (n = 100). After being immersed in either acidic saliva (pH = 4.0) (ST) or gastric juice (pH = 1.2) (GT), each material was subjected to 10,000 cycles of thermal aging. The Vickers microhardness and average surface roughness of the specimens were assessed at baseline, following thermal aging and exposure to either gastric juice or acidic saliva. The surface properties were examined using an atomic force microscope. The Mann‒Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction and the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test was used for statistical analysis (a = 0.05). Results The surface roughness of two leucite‐reinforced glass ceramics (G‐ceram and CEREC) significantly decreased with ST (p = 0.027 and p = 0.044). Only the CEREC was affected when the aging protocols were compared, and the ST group had a significant reduction in roughness (p = 0.009). The microhardness values significantly decreased after both aging protocols in all groups except for the ST subgroup of G‐Ceram. Only inCoris was affected when the aging protocols were compared, and the GT group exhibited a significant reduction in microhardness (p = 0.002). Conclusion The surface roughness of the tested materials was not affected by the GT. Only leucite ceramics exhibited a decrease in surface roughness in the ST stage. Both aging processes produced a significant decrease in the microhardness of the tested ceramics. Leucite‐reinforced glass‐ceramic materials may be advantageous for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and those with a diet high in acidic foods due to their lower values for changes in microhardness and surface roughness compared to those of other CAD‐CAM materials.
