Abstract:The Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter metrics share remarkable local geometric properties in four dimensions. Gibbons et al. found a generalization of the Kerr-de Sitter metric to higher dimensions, to which the local characterization above cannot be applied. One viable approach to characterize this family is to understand the behaviour of these metrics at future null infinity. We review Friedrich’s and Fefferman-Graham formalisms to discuss the asymptotic initial value problem of ( Λ > 0 )-vacuum spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions and study their properties: geometric identification and conformal equivalence of data, Killing initial data and conformal equivalence of boundary conformal Killing vectors (CKV). These results are used to review a recent characterization of Kerr-de Sitter in terms of its asymptotic data, namely conformal flatness at I together with a canonical TT tensor constructed from specific CKV at I . Allowing for arbitrary CKV defines the (larger) Kerr-de Sitter-like class. All these metrics can be obtained explicitly as limits or analytic extensions of Kerr-de Sitter. The Kerr-de Sitter-like class is also characterized by the property of being Kerr-Schild and fulfilling a certain falloff condition. In addition, in five dimensions, this class corresponds to all algebraically special metrics with non-degenerate optical matrix. An asymptotic characterisation of the Kerr spacetime

Abstract:We provide a characterisation of the Kerr spacetime close to future null infinity using the asymptotic characteristic initial value problem in a conformally compactified spacetime. Stewart's gauge is used to set up the past-oriented characteristic initial value problem. By a theorem of M. Mars characterising the Kerr spacetime, we provide conditions for the existence of an asymptotically timelike Killing vector on the development of the initial data by demanding that the spacetime is endowed with a Killing spinor. The conditions on the characteristic initial data ensuring the existence of a Killing spinor are, in turn, analysed. Finally, we write the conditions on the initial data in terms of the free data in the characteristic initial value problem. As a result, we characterise the Kerr spacetime using only a section of future null infinity and its intersection with an outgoing null hypersurface.

Abstract:We investigate the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence in the context of rotating spacetimes with a NUT twist. The Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the near-horizon states of an extremal four (or higher) dimensional black hole could be identified with a certain chiral conformal field theory. The corresponding Virasoro algebra is generated with a class of diffeomorphism which preserves an appropriate boundary condition on the near-horizon geometry. We try to understand the analog of singularities in the context of dual chiral CFT. Explicitly, we use Kerr/CFT correspondence to show that if we initially do not remove the singularities from the spacetimes, in the dual chiral CFT we can detect the presence of singularities in the bulk of spacetime.

Abstract:Recently it has been speculated that a set of diffeomorphisms exist which act non-trivially on the horizon of some black holes such as Kerr and Kerr-Newman black hole. Using this symmetry in covariant phase space formalism one can obtain conserved charges as surface integrals on the horizon. Kerr-Bolt spacetime is well-known for its asymptotic topology and has been studied widely in recent years. In this work we are going to study Kerr-Bolt black hole and provide a holographic description of it in term of warped conformal field theory.

Abstract:We define a conformal reference frame, i.e., a special projection of the six-dimensional sky bundle of a Lorentzian manifold (or the five-dimensional twistor space) to a three-dimensional manifold. We construct an example, a conformal compactification, for Minkowski space. Based on the complex structure on the skies, we define the celestial transform of Lorentzian vectors, a kind of spinor correspondence. We express a 1-form generating the contact structure explicitly as a (line bundle)-valued form. We prove a theorem on the projection of this 1-form to the fiberwise normal bundle of a reference frame; its corollary is an equation for the flow of time. The Appendix is less mathematical than the main body and discusses the causal relation in context of the FLRW cosmology and its natural conformal reference frame.

Einstein manifolds with optical geometries of Kerr type

Abstract:We classify the Ricci flat Lorentzian $n$-manifolds satisfying three particular conditions, encoding and combining some crucial features of the Kerr metrics and the Robinson-Trautman optical structures. We prove that: (a) If $n>4$, there is no Lorentzian manifold satisfying the considered Kerr type conditions, in unexpected contrast with what occurs for the metrics satisfying (very similar) Taub-NUT type conditions; (b) If $n=4$ there are two large classes of such Kerr type manifolds. Each class consists of manifolds fibering over open Riemann surfaces, equipped with a metric of constant Gaussian curvature $\kappa = 1$ or $\kappa = -1$. The first class includes a three parameter family of metrics admitting real analytic extensions to $(\mathbb R^3 \setminus\{0\}) \times \mathbb R = (S^2 \times \mathbb R_+) \times \mathbb R$ and a large class of other metrics not admitting this kind of extensions. The metrics of this first class admitting such extensions are all isometric to the well known Kerr metrics, with the three parameters corresponding to the three space-like components of the angular momentum of the gravitational field. The second class contains a subclass of metrics defined on $\big(\mathbb D\times \mathbb R_+\big)\times \mathbb R$, where $\mathbb D$ is the Lobachevsky Poincaré disc. This subclass is in bijection with the holomorphic functions on $\mathbb D$ satisfying an appropriate open condition. These and other results are consequences of a very simple way to construct totally explicit examples of Ricci flat Lorentzian manifolds.

Abstract:Generalized Kerr–Schild nilpotent deformations of an arbitrary background spacetime are considered. Those are of the form with . The relationship between the Ricci tensor of the background metric and the Ricci tensor of the deformed metric is found exactly. It consists of two terms, one is essentially the Fierz–Pauli operator, and the other is new. When the background is flat, the Kerr–Schild family is recovered. Novel examples for more general backgrounds (even including some simple sources) are discussed.

Abstract:We obtain a characterization of the Kerr metric among stationary, asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetimes, which extends the characterization in terms of the Simon tensor (defined only in the manifold of trajectories) to the whole spacetime. More precisely, we define a three index tensor on any spacetime with a Killing field, which vanishes identically for Kerr and which coincides in the strictly stationary region with the Simon tensor when projected down into the manifold of trajectories. We prove that a stationary asymptotically flat vacuum spacetime with vanishing spacetime Simon tensor is locally isometric to Kerr. A geometrical interpretation of this characterization in terms of the Weyl tensor is also given. Namely, a stationary, asymptotically flat vacuum spacetime such that each principal null direction of the Killing form is a repeated principal null direction of the Weyl tensor is locally isometric to Kerr.

Abstract:We establish a one-to-one correspondence between Kähler metrics in a given conformal class and parallel sections of a certain vector bundle with conformally invariant connection, where the parallel sections satisfy a set of non--linear algebraic constraints that we describe. The vector bundle captures 2-form prolongations and is isomorphic to $\Lambda^3(\cT)$, where ${\cT}$ is the tractor bundle of conformal geometry, but the resulting connection differs from the normal tractor connection by curvature terms. Our analysis leads to a set of obstructions for a Riemannian metric to be conformal to a Kähler metric. In particular we find an explicit algebraic condition for a Weyl tensor which must hold if there exists a conformal Killing-Yano tensor, which is a necessary condition for a metric to be conformal to Kähler. This gives an invariant characterisation of algebraically special Riemannian metrics of type $D$ in dimensions higher than four.

Abstract:We identify an anisotropic divergence-free conformal Killing tensor $K_{jl}$ for static spherically symmetric spacetimes, and write the conformal Killing gravity equations as Einstein equations augmented by this tensor. The field equations are of second order: this fact allows for analytic solutions and considerably simplifies the derivation of results of previous studies based on the original Harada equations. In particular, we prove the equivalence of the known third order field equations, with the second order ones obtained by us in the conformal Killing parametrization. The structure of the Ricci tensor and of the conformal Killing tensor are compatible with both anisotropic fluid sources and (non)-linear electrodynamics. We reobtain covariantly and in simple steps the general static spherical solutions for vacuum and linear electrodynamics. Moreover we recover the purely magnetic Lagrangian functions that induce metrics of interest for black holes.

Abstract:We introduce a new family of operators in 4-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with a non-vanishing Weyl scalar (non-degenerate spaces) that keep the conformal covariance of \emph{conformally covariant tensor concomitants}. A particular case that arises naturally is the $\mathcal{C}$-connection that is a Weyl connection that keeps \emph{conformal invariance}. Using the $\mathcal{C}-$connection we give a new characterization of non-degenerate spaces that are conformal to an Einstein space.

Abstract:The unique Nature of the Lorentz group in four dimensions is the root cause of the many remarkable properties of the Einstein spacetimes, in particular their operational structure on the 2-forms. We show how this operational structure can be used for two ends. First, it allows for a simple generalization of the Birkhoff theorem to Schwarzschild (A)de-Sitter spacetime. Second, it provides the means to construct an Abelian endomorphism group on the space of 2-forms. It is observed that taking the trace over this group element-wise induces a further Abelian group which may be identified with a tensor representation of conformal transformations, giving Einstein spacetimes access to their own conformal equivalence class. A further trace over the group yields the curvature invariants of the spacetime. The Kretschmann scalar becomes the topological Euler density, which may be linked in a simple way to the Hawking temperature of horizons.

Abstract:We study the conformal classes of 2-dimensional Lorentzian tori with (non zero) Killing fields. We define a map that associate to such a class a vector field on the circle (up to a scalar factor). This map is not injective but has finite dimensional fiber. It allows us to characterize the conformal classes of tori with Killing field satisfying a condition related to the existence of conjugate points given by L. Mehidi.

Abstract:We give a simple prescription for relating different solutions to the zero-rest-mass field equations in conformally flat space-time via complex conformal transformations and changes in reality conditions. We give several examples including linearized black holes. In particular, we show that the linearized Plebanski-Demianski and Schwarzschild fields are related by a complex translation and a complex special conformal transformation. Similar results hold for the linearized Kerr and C-metric fields, and for a peculiar toroidal singularity.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate conformal Killing's vectors (CKVs) admitted by some plane symmetric spacetimes. Ten conformal Killing's equations and their general forms of CKVs are derived along with their conformal factor. The existence of conformal Killing's symmetry imposes restrictions on the metric functions. The conditions imposing restrictions on these metric functions are obtained as a set of integrability conditions. Considering the cases of time-like and inheriting CKVs, we obtain spacetimes admitting plane conformal symmetry. Integrability conditions are solved completely for some known non-conformally flat and conformally flat classes of plane symmetric spacetimes. A special vacuum plane symmetric spacetime is obtained, and it is shown that for such a metric CKVs are just the homothetic vectors (HVs). Among all the examples considered, there exists only one case with a six dimensional algebra of special CKVs admitting one proper CKV. In all other examples of non-conformally flat metrics, no proper CKV is found and CKVs are either HVs or Killing's vectors (KVs). In each of the three cases of conformally flat metrics, a fifteen dimensional algebra of CKVs is obtained of which eight are proper CKVs.

Abstract:We explicitly prove that the Weyl conformal symmetry solves the black hole singularity problem, otherwise unavoidable in a generally covariant local or non-local gravitational theory. Moreover, we yield explicit examples of local and non-local theories enjoying Weyl and diffeomorphism symmetry (in short co-covariant theories). Following the seminal paper by Narlikar and Kembhavi, we provide an explicit construction of singularity-free spherically symmetric and axi-symmetric exact solutions for black hole spacetimes conformally equivalent to the Schwarzschild or the Kerr spacetime. We first check the absence of divergences in the Kretschmann invariant for the rescaled metrics. Afterwords, we show that the new types of black holes are geodesically complete and linked by a Newman-Janis transformation just as in standard general relativity (based on Einstein-Hilbert action). Furthermore, we argue that no massive or massless particles can reach the former Schwarzschild singularity or touch the former Kerr ring singularity in a finite amount of their proper time or of their affine parameter. Finally, we discuss the Raychaudhuri equation in a co-covariant theory and we show that the expansion parameter for congruences of both types of geodesics (for massless and massive particles) never reaches minus infinity. Actually, the null geodesics become parallel at the r=0 point in the Schwarzschild spacetime (the origin) and the focusing of geodesics is avoided. The arguments of regularity of curvature invariants, geodesic completeness, and finiteness of geodesics' expansion parameter ensure us that we are dealing with singularity-free and geodesically-complete black hole spacetimes.

Abstract:We study the existence of gradient conformal Killing vectors (CKVs) in the class of locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) spacetimes which generalizes spherically symmetric spacetimes, and investigate some implications for the evolutionary character of marginally outer trapped surfaces. We first study existence of gradient CKVs via the obtention of a relationship between the Ricci curvature and the gradient of the divergence of the CKV. This provides an alternative set of equations, for which the integrability condition is obtained, to analyze the existence of gradient CKVs. A uniqueness result is obtained in the case of perfect fluids, where it is demonstrated that the Robertson-Walker solution is the unique perfect fluid solution with a nonvanishing pressure, admitting a timelike gradient CKV. The constant mean curvature condition for LRS spacetimes is also obtained, characterized by three distinct conditions which are specified by a set of three scalars. Linear combinations of these scalars, whose vanishing define the constant mean curvature condition, turn out to be related to the evolutions of null expansions of 2-spheres along their null normal directions. As such, some implications for the existence of black holes and the character of the associated horizons are obtained. It is further shown that dynamical black holes of increasing area, with a non-vanishing heat flux across the horizon, will be in equilibrium, with respect to the frame of the conformal observers.
