Abstract:Cyatheaceae (tree ferns) are an ancient plant family widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, and are valued as witnesses to the evolution of the earth's species. The factors affecting tree fern growth include temperature, moisture, and light. In recent years, mass mortalities of Cyathea lepifera have occurred in Taiwan, threatening the survival of this species. To examine the growth situation of tree ferns in Southern Taiwan, we used the Tajen Experimental Forest Station as a study area and surveyed 214 samples of C. lepifera trees to establish spatial information for a database of C. lepifera to be used for conservation strategy. The results show that the ecological optima are an elevation of 500–800 m, slope of 20–30°, aspect of 90–135° (Eastern), and whole light sky space of 20%–80%. Most tree ferns grow in open areas and valley areas, and the health of C. lepifera is greatest in the valley areas. In addition, a high light environment is not conducive to seedling regeneration, and low light conditions lead to competition for resources. Therefore, C. lepifera can grow in a medium-high photometric environment, which promotes plant growth and seedling regeneration. In the future, we will designate conservation areas according to the optimal habitat as well as adopt forest management practices to protect this species.

Abstract:Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin, Cyatheaceae, is a tree fern that grows in hygrophilous and gallery forests, riparian vegetation, and seasonal forests in the northeast, southeast, and south of Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the species is only recorded on the northern coast and is included in the list of the State’s endangered flora. The effect of pH, temperature, and photoperiod on spore germination and gametophyte development of C. corcovadensis was assessed. Three experiments were performed: (1) pH values 4, 5, 6, and 7; (2) at temperatures of 20, 23, 26, 29, and 32 °C; and (3) for photoperiods of 8, 12, 16, and 24 h of light and in the dark. Higher percentages of germination were observed when spores were cultured at pH values from 4 to 6, at 23, 26, and 29 °C, and exposed to 8, 12, and 16 h of light. No germination occurred in the dark. Gametophyte development accelerated in pH values 4 and 5, at 23 and 26 °C, during 8, 12, and 16 h of exposure to light. The three abiotic conditions in which higher germination percentages occurred and gametophytes in more advanced developmental stages were found coincided with the characteristics of the native forest environment of this species. The results contribute to the knowledge of abiotic requirements and tolerances of the species and provide data for the cultivation of the species in botanic gardens or horticultural institutions, using spore germination as a strategy for ex situ propagation and conservation.

An invasive tree fern alters soil and plant nutrient dynamics in Hawaii

Abstract:Invasive species that alter ecosystems are often successful competitors due to their effects on nutrient cycling. Sphaeropteris cooperi (Cyatheaceae; Australian tree fern) has been invading intact Hawaiian rainforests for decades and displacing the dominant native tree fern Cibotium glaucum (Cibotiaceae). S. cooperi produces more leaves that grow faster, contain more N and P, and decompose faster than C. glaucum leaves. Our experiment tested the effects of additions of leaf litter from native and non-native tree ferns on the growth and nutrient content of four native angiosperm species in forest (N-rich) and landslide (P-rich) soils. Both litter treatments inhibited growth initially in all species, but subsequent responses were species-specific. Compared to control treatments, the increase in biomass was highest in the fast-growing Carex wahuensis and Hibiscus arnottianus with S. cooperi litter in landslide soil. Leaf N in C. wahuensis was higher with S. cooperi litter and in forest soil, as expected, but other leaf nutrient responses showed some evidence of nutrient immobilization from litter addition. Several growth measures were higher with S. cooperi than C. glaucum litter and in forest than landslide soil, suggesting that N availability is the strongest driver of growth. Our results show that S. cooperi can alter nutrient cycling in Hawaiian plants, sometimes with positive effects on growth. However, under natural conditions, native plants must compete for these additional nutrients with S. cooperi and other invasive species. This study contributes to invasion biology as the first to examine the impact of leaf litter of an invasive fern on native species.

Abstract:Abstract Cyathea corcovadensis and Cyathea phalerata are tree ferns native to Brazil, endangered in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Spore germination and gametophyte development in media with different nutrient formulations and activated charcoal were evaluated, aiming to develop a process for obtaining plants of the two species. Spores were sown in four semi-solid culture media: Meyer, Dyer, MS with 50% and MS with 25% of the original macronutrient concentration. For each medium, 10 replicates were carried out (flasks with 5 mg of spores/30 mL of medium), with and without 1% activated charcoal, respectively. Spore germination and gametophytic development (laminar and cordate stages) were quantified at 30, 60 and 90 days of culture. Cyathea corcovadensis and C. phalerata germinated and developed gametophytes in all media. For both species, the highest percentages of germination and cordate gametophytes (more advanced development stage) were recorded in Meyer medium without activated charcoal, which has higher concentrations of macronutrients and no micronutrients compared to the other evaluated media. We recommend cultivating the plants in Meyer medium for greater gametophytic development and subsequent sporophyte obtention, as a biotechnological tool for C. corcovadensis and C. phalerata conservation and for environmental restoration and enrichment using these tree ferns.

Abstract:Cyatheaceae (tree ferns) appeared during the Jurassic period and some of the species still remain. Those species may have some morphological and/or physiological characteristics for survival. A tree fern was observed to suppress the growth of other ligneous plants in a tropical forest. It was assumed that the fern may release toxic substances into the forest floor, but those toxic substances have not yet been identified. Therefore, we investigated the phytotoxicity and phytotoxic substances of Cyathea lepifera (J. Sm. ex Hook.) Copel. An aqueous methanol extract of C. lepifera fronds inhibited the growth of roots and shoots of dicotyledonous garden cress (Lepidum sativum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), and monocotyledonous ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), timothy (Phleum pratense L.), and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.). The results suggest that C. lepifera fronds may have phytotoxicity and contain some phytotoxic substances. The extract was purified through several chromatographic steps during which inhibitory activity was monitored, and p-coumaric acid and (-)-3-hydroxy-β-ionone were isolated. Those compounds showed phytotoxic activity and may contribute to the phytotoxic effects caused by the C. lepifera fronds. The fronds fall and accumulate on the forest floor through defoliation, and the compounds may be released into the forest soils through the decomposition process of the fronds. The phytotoxic activities of the compounds may be partly responsible for the fern’s survival.

Abstract:Archer's sedge ( Carex archeri Boott) is a small, rare (or possibly overlooked by collectors due to the diminutive size) species restricted to alpine and subalpine habitats in south-eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania. The systematic placement has been obscure with the species having been historically associated with sections in four of the six recognised Carex subgenera. We investigated the placement of C. archeri by addition to the available Carex molecular phylogenetic framework. Our results support C. archeri belonging to sect. Junciformes (in subg. Psyllophorae ), making this the only representative of the subgenus in Australia. This placement was first proposed by Kükenthal (1909) who regarded C. archeri as a synonym of the New Zealand endemic C. acicularis Boott but our phylogenetic analyses support C. archeri as a separate taxon. Our approach highlights the utility of molecular barcoding for elucidating systematic relationships of poorly known taxa. Biogeographic reconstruction suggests Late Miocene dispersal from South America to the south-western Pacific but does not clarify whether New Zealand or Australia was colonised first. We evaluate the conservation status of Carex archeri using IUCN criteria as Endangered at the global level. At the state level, we propose Critically Endangered status in New South Wales, Endangered in Victoria and Data Deficient in Tasmania.

Abstract:The leaf production and senescence, formation and release of spores of Cyathea atrovirens (Langsd. & Fisch.) Domin were analysed based on the monthly monitoring of 50 plants growing in a secondary forest, in the municipality of Novo Hamburgo, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, during the year 2004. The caudex height and number of mature and fertile leaves were recorded annually in 2004-09. In 2004, monthly production and senescence of leaves were concomitant, without total leaf abscission. Population synchrony at emergence (Z = 0.86) and leaf senescence (Z = 0.82) increased in spring but did not correlate with temperature and photoperiod. All individuals were fertile and the sporangia production and spore liberation presented higher and equal synchrony (Z = 0.84) respectively in spring and summer. Sporangia production was related with temperature and photoperiod, however taller plants did not produce more fertile leaves. Phenological events analysed were not influenced by precipitation, as expected for forests in non-seasonal climate. Over five years (2004-09), the annual mean caudex growth varied between 1.19 and 2.50 cm.year-1 and the plants appeared to have an ability to maintain a relatively stable amount of leaves throughout this period.
Herbivory and leaf expansion of Cyathea phalerata Mart. (Cyatheaceae) in subtropical Atlantic Forest, southern Brazil

Abstract:Herbivory is an interaction with great impact on plant communities since relationships between herbivores and plants are fundamental to the distribution and abundance of species over time and space. The aim of this study was to monitor the rate of leaf expansion in the tree fern Cyathea phalerata and evaluate the damage caused by herbivores to leaves of different ages and whether such damage is related to temperature and precipitation. The study was performed in a subtropical Atlantic Forest fragment located in the municipality of Caraá, in the northeast hillside of Rio Grande do Sul state, in southern Brazil. We monitored 24 mature individuals of C. phalerata with croziers in a population of approximately 50 plants. Leaf expansion rate, percentage of damaged leaves and leaf blade consumption rate by herbivory were calculated. Monthly means for temperature and accumulated rainfall were calculated from daily data. Croziers of C. phalerata were found to expand rapidly during the first and second months after emergence (3.98 cm day-1; 2.91 cm day-1, respectively). Damage caused by herbivory was observed in all of the monitored leaves, but none of the plants experienced complete defoliation. The highest percentage (57%) of damaged leaves was recorded at 60 days of monitoring, and also the highest monthly consumption rate of the blade (6.04%) occurred with young, newly-expanded leaves, while this rate remained between 1.50 and 2.21% for mature leaves. Rates of monthly leaf consumption and damaged leaves showed positive and strong relationship with each other and with temperature. The rapid leaf expansion observed for C. phalerata can be considered a phenological strategy to reduce damage to young leaves by shortening the developmental period and accelerating the increase of defenses in mature leaves.

Abstract:The aim of our research was to describe the structure and growth potential of a cell suspension of the tree fern Cyathea smithii. Experiments were performed on an established cell suspension with 1⁄2 MS medium supplemented with 9.05 μM 2,4-D + 0.88 μM BAP. In the experiments, attention was paid to the microscopic description of cell suspension, evaluation of cell growth dependent on the initial mass of cells and organic carbon source in the medium, the length of the passage, the content of one selected flavonoid in the post-culture medium, nuclear DNA content, ethylene production, and the antimicrobial value of the extract. For a better understanding of the cell changes that occurred during the culture of the suspension, the following structures of the cell were observed: nucleus, lipid bodies, tannin deposits, starch grains, cell walls, primary lamina, and the filaments of metabolites released into the medium. The nuclear DNA content (acriflavine-Feulgen staining) of cell aggregates distinctly indicated a lack of changes in the sporophytic origin of the cultured cell suspension. The physiological activity of the suspension was found to be high because of kinetics, intensive production of ethylene, and quercetin production. The microbiological studies suggested that the cell suspension possessed a bactericidal character against microaerobic Gram-positive bacteria. A sample of the cell suspension showed bacteriostatic activity against aerobic bacteria.

Abstract:Derris Lour. and Brachypterum (Wight & Arn.) Benth. (Leguminosae subfamily Papilionoideae) in Australia are revised on the basis of examination of fresh, dried and spirit-preserved specimens and phylogenetic analysis of plastid matK and nuclear internal transcribed spacer ( ITS ) sequence data. Three species of Derris and four species of Brachypterum are recognised as occurring in Australia. Two new Brachypterum species, namely Brachypterum nitidum W.E.Cooper and Brachypterum opacum W.E.Cooper, are described and illustrated. Notes on habitat, distribution and an identification key are presented for all species of both genera that occur in Australia.

Abstract:In nature, the tree fern Cyathea smithii lacks meristem multiplication; therefore, a system of vegetative propagation in vitro is required to protect the species' gene resources. Experiments were carried out on the apical dome of C. smithii J. D. Hooker (soft tree fern, Katote) to determine its morphogenic potential using 1/2 strength of Murashige and Skoog medium containing various concentration of thidiazuron [TDZ; 1-phenyl-3-(1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl)-urea)] (0.01, 0.1, 1.0, and 5.0 μM) supplemented with naphthalene acetic acid (0.25 μM). The success of the treatments was determined by the number of regenerants per explant, level of regenerant development, and nuclear DNA content in the green mesophyll cells. The highest number of regenerants was achieved in the presence of 5.0 μM TDZ and the lowest at 0.01 μM TDZ. The quality of development of the regenerants was expressed as the number of formed leaves and their growth per individual plantlet. The highest growth and development of regenerants occurred at the lowest concentration of TDZ (0.01 μM), and the lowest growth and development of regenerants occurred at the highest TDZ concentration (5.0 μM); however, the number of regenerants showed the opposite. In gametophytes, the nuclear DNA content ranged from 4.74–4.78 pg representing haploid level, whereas in sporophytes it ranged from 8.45–9.13 pg and was diploid. These results prove the stability of the regenerant genome after TDZ treatment of meristematic cells.

Chlorosis in a Tree Fern (Cyathea cooperi) Induced by Brief Heat Stress

Abstract:Chlorosis occurred in a frond of Cyathea cooperi (Hook. ex F. Muell.) Domin exposed briefly to air temperatures up to 41.2°C during expansion. Pinnule anatomy and cellular organization were generally unaffected, but chloroplast development was impaired. Chlorophyll concentration was reduced to less than 5% of normal, and grana were few in number and attenuated. Stroma thylakoids were almost completely absent, starch grains did not develop and membrane-bound vesicles were numerous and sometimes large. Previously matured fronds were not injured visibly by high temperatures.

Host Selectivity and Distribution of Cassytha filiformis in the Coastal Bornean Heath Forests

Abstract:We investigated the host range of Cassytha filiformis L. in the heath forests using six 50-metre transects. Sixteen shrubs and tree species were infected by C. filiformis vines, including two exotic Acacia species. This paper also examined the density and vigour of C. filiformis when infecting the two most preferred and common hosts, the heath native Dillenia suffruticosa (Griff. ex Hook. f. and Thomson) Martelli, and the invasive Acacia mangium Willd. The results suggested that C. filiformis has higher vigour when infecting native hosts than in exotic A. mangium albeit being not statistically significant. The long thread-like stems of parasite were present at relatively high density when infecting A. mangium, regardless of the host conditions. We also assessed the functionality of the haustoria on both D. suffruticosa and A. mangium using histological methods. It was found that C. filiformis can establish a true haustorial endophytic connection with studied hosts. Under controlled conditions, C. filiformis pose as a possible candidate for a biological control agent of A. mangium to curtail the fast spreading of this introduced species in tropical Borneo.

Abstract:Tabular records of plant-trait data are essential for diverse research purposes. Here we present scorings for a trio of core plant traits, plant growth form, woodiness and life history, for nearly all (>99%) accepted taxon concepts included in the Australian Plant Census (APC). This dataset is predominantly derived from Australia's state and national floras, supplemented by the taxonomic literature and diverse web resources. In total, 29,993 species and infraspecific taxa were scored for plant growth form, 30,279 for woodiness and 30,056 for life history, with taxa scored as displaying a single or multiple trait values, as appropriate. We provide sample R code that shows how to access and interrogate the dataset. This resource will enable rapid assessment of plant responses to disturbance events and new biogeographic analyses of trait distributions, better understandings of evolutionary trajectories, and ecological strategies.
