Abstract:In this paper, Carex chungii and other five names at species rank, plus one variety and one form, all from of C. sect. Mitratae, were revised. They constitute a group of morphologically very similar taxa, difficult to tell apart. Our study was based on literature survey, fieldwork, herbarium specimens, statistical analysis of morphological characters and SEM observations of achenes and perigynia. Analysis of morphological data of 94 individuals from eleven populations using principal component analysis (PCA) revealed five clusters, which we consequently considered to correspond to five species. The achenes of Carex genkaiensis were strikingly different from all the other species regarding achene apex contracted into a 0.2-0.5 mm long neck-like appendage (vs. into a discoid-annulate style-base), as well as its perigynium indumentum (pubescent vs. sparsely pubescent). Carex anhuiensis, C. xuanchengensis and C. truncatirostris f. erostris are all synonymized to C. truncatirostris. The previously recognized Carex kamagariensis from Japan is synonymized to C. chungii. Carex chungii var. rigida is recognized as specific rank and the new name C. nanpingensis is proposed. Our study is the first effort to address the taxonomy of this complicate group as a whole in its entire range.

Abstract:Carex yandangshanica C. Z. Zheng & X. F. Jin, a new species of Carex sect. Rhomboidales Kükenth. from Zhejiang, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to C. thibetica Franch. and C. brevicuspis C. B. Clarke, but differs from the former by having trabeculate leaves, pistillate spikes with 6–10 staminate flowers or without staminate flower at the apex, and achenes at apex contracted into a slightly curved beak, and from the latter by having lateral culms, trabeculate leaves, and elliptic, rubiginous and awned pistillate scales. SEM microphotographs of perigynia and achenes are provided for the new species and related taxa.
A New Synonym of Enkianthus Perulatus (ericaceae) in East Asia, Based on Morphological and Molecular Evidence

Abstract:Enkianthus calophyllus was once treated as a synonym of E. serrulatus. However, field observations indicate that E. calophyllus is distinct from E. serrulatus but resembles E. perulatus in flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds. Hence, a taxonomic revision of these species was conducted based on morphological comparisons of flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds, as well as molecular analyses of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and six plastid DNA markers (psbA-trnH, rpl32-trnL, trnL-trnF, rps16-trnQ, psbJ-petA and matK). The morphological and molecular results reject the synonymization of E. calophyllus with E. serrulatus, and instead show it to be placed in a clade with E. perulatus. Based on molecular evidence and a reassessment of the morphology we synonymize E. calophyllus with the older name E. perulatus.

Abstract:Carex huangshanica X. F. Jin & W. J. Chen, a new species from Anhui Province of eastern China, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Carex sect. Rhomboidales and resembles C. longirostrata in having perigynia gradually contracted into a long beak at apex; orifice 2-lobed with long teeth; achenes abruptly contracted into a beak at apex. It differs from C. longirostrata in having upper spikes aggregated, pistillate scales shortly awned at apex, perigynia nearly glabrous, and achenes ovoid. Micromorphological characters of the perigynia and achenes under scanning electron microscope are compared between the new species and C. longirostrata. Carex huangshanica has glabrous perigynia (vs. pubescent perigynia in C. longirostrata), achenes abruptly contracted in a short curved beak at apex, and only one silica body is present in each epidermal cell (vs. achenes of C. longirostrat that are contracted in a short coiled beak at apex, and without silica body in epidermal cells).

Owing to its peculiar habit, Carex hangzhouensis does not fit into all existing section. Therefore, based upon this type, the new Carex sect. Abstract:Recent fieldwork in the Chinese province of Zhejiang revealed new insights into the taxonomy of the genus Carex in this area. Carex honglinii, a new species of Carex sect. Confertiflorae, is described. It differs from C. pseudodispalata in having perigynia broadly obovoid, contracted into a ca. 0.5‒0.7 mm long beak at the apex, and staminate scales acuminate. Carex nemostachys var. subglabra (sect. Confertiflorae) is raised to specific rank and combined as C. subglabra. Eventually, a new subspecies of Carex scopulus (subsp. aristata; sect. Mitratae) is described. This new subspecies differs from the type subspecies in having pistillate scales with a 1‒4 mm long apical scabrous awn, and leaves 1.5‒2.5 wide.

Abstract:Carex zhejiangensis X. F. Jin, Y. J. Zhao, C. Z. Zheng & H. W. Zhang, a new species of Carex sect. Rhomboidales sensu Kükenthal (Cyperaceae) from Zhejiang, eastern China, is described with illustrations. This new species is morphologically similar to C. filipes and C. macroglossa. Compared to C. filipes, C. zhejiangensis has elongated rhizomes, scattered culms, rather densely flowered pistillate spikes, achenes shortly stipitate at the base, and styles erect at the base. In contrast, C. filipes has short rhizomes, caespitose culms, sparsely flowered pistillate spikes, achenes obscurely stipitate at the base, and styles curved at the base. C. zhejiangensis differs from C. macroglossa by having elongated rhizomes and scattered culms, pistillate scales awned at apex, and perigynia contracted to a narrowly infundibuliform beak at apex. Diagnostic morphological characters, which are based upon population sampling, were analyzed in Carex zhejiangensis sp. nov., C. filipes and C. macroglossa.

The new species is morphologically similar to C. dolichostachya Hayata and C. tianmushanica C. Z. Zheng & X. F. Jin, but differs from the former in having perigynia sparsely pubescent and achenes constricted into a short neck at apex. It differs from the latter in having achenes not contracted in the middle part.

Abstract:Section Radicales (Kük.) Nelmes comprises nearly 15 species in Carex subg. Carex (Cyperaceae) and is mainly distributed in the Pan-Himalaya region, with a few species extending to the Guangxi and Hainan provinces of China and Burma. A taxonomic revision of sect. Radicales in China is proposed and 12 species with two varieties are recognized. Carex pseudomitrata X. F. Jin & Cen is described as a new species and C. caudispicata var. longiutriculata X. F. Jin is described as a new variety. Carex anningensis is reduced to synonym of C. caudispicata, and C. chuiana to C. radicalis. Carex funhuangshanica and C. speciosa subsp. dilatata are respectively reduced to synonyms of C. speciosa and C. speciosa var. courtallensis.

Abstract:Carex scopulus, C. bamaensis, C. pararadicalis and C. tingnungii, four new species from China, are described with illustrations in the present paper. Carex scopulus is similar to C. chungii (sect. Mitratae) in having achenes with angles constricted at the middle, but differs by having pistillate scales pale reddish brown and acuminate at apex, staminate scales reddish brown, and perigynia glabrous. Carex bamaensis is similar to C. lancifolia (sect. Clandestinae) in having culms lateral and leaf blades 2.5-6 mm wide, but differs in having culms, leaves and bracts all pilose, and pistillate spikes fairly densely flowered. Carex pararadicalis resembles C. handelii (sect. Chlorostachyae) in having rhizomes long and creeping, but differs by having the terminal spike gynecandrous, lateral spikes pistillate, and pistillate scales obtuse at apex and shorter than the perigynia. Carex tingnungii resembles C. plectobasis (subsect. Ferrugineae) in having 3 stigmas and perigynia that are compressed trigonous and densely whitish hispidulous, but differs in having a solitary staminate spike with 1-4 pistillate flowers at the base, achenes oblong-ellipsoid, and styles that are densely crisped-pilose.

Abstract:Cerastium qingliangfengicum H.W. Zhang & X.F. Jin sp. nova (Caryophyllaceae) is described. The new species was found in moist places in the valleys of Mt. Qingliangfeng in western Zhejiang of China. It is morphologically similar to C. wilsonii, hut differs by having sparsely to densely pubescent stems, leaves densely pubescent on both surfaces, petal lobes obtuse at apex, and capsules more than twice as long as sepals.

Abstract:Tribe Carpheae presently includes Carpha and Trianoptiles . Sixteen species were recovered in Carpha Banks & Sol. ex R.Br. sens. lat. by phenetic analyses and these species were separated into two clades that we recognise here as genera Carpha sens. str. and Asterochaete Nees, on the basis of phylogenetic analyses. We present a new taxonomy for the two genera, including eleven species in Asterochaete ( A. acuminata X.F.Zhang, A. angustissima (Cherm.) X.F.Zhang, A. borbonica (Steud.) X.F.Zhang, A. capitellata Nees, A. dactyloides (Vahl) K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl , A. discolor T.H.Arnold ex X.F.Zhang, A. eminii (C.B.Clarke) X.F.Zhang, A. filifolia (C.Reid & T.H.Arnold) X.F.Zhang, A. nitens Kunth, A. schlechteri (C.B.Clarke) X.F.Zhang and A. ulugurensis Nelmes ex X.F.Zhang) and five species in Carpha sens. str. ( C. alpina R.Br., C. curvata W.M.Curtis, C. nivicola F.Muell., C. rodwayi W.M.Curtis, and C. schoenoides Banks & Sol. ex Hook.f.), with one unassigned name ( Carpha aristata Kük.). Asterochaete acuminata , A. discolor and A. ulugurensis are new species; a new combination, A. dactyloides, is made for what was previously called A. glomerata (Nees) Nees. The ranks of Asterochaete angustissima, Carpha schoenoides and C. nivicola are clarified, whereas Carpha bracteosa C.B.Clarke and C. perrieri Cherm. are synonymised with A. capitellata .

Abstract:Based on a literature survey and a field trip with specimen examination, statistical analysis including principal components analysis (PCA) on morphological characters have been carried out on Rhododendron mariae and related taxa. Cluster analysis and PCA showed three independent groups, which corresponded to three species except R. loniceriflorum. As a consequence, nine taxa are reduced to synonyms of R. mariae, and two new combinations, viz R. mariae subsp. microphyton, and R. mariae subsp. flumineum are made. Rhododendron microphyton var. trichanthum is reduced to a synonym of R. mariae subsp. microphyton, and R. malipoense to a synonym of R. mariae subsp. flumineum. Three names are synonymized and a new combination, viz R. chryocalyx subsp. meridionale, is proposed within R. chryocalyx. The third entity, R. naamkwanense, has got two new synonyms. Rhododendron loniceriflorum, with whitish pubescence on the inner corolla surface, is recognized as the fourth distinct species. Each entity is illustrated with line drawings for identification.

Abstract:A new species, Smilax weniae (Smilacaceae), from Southwest China, is described and illustrated. The new species bears peltate leaves, which was previously a unique feature of S. luei. However, it differs from the latter by having a broad ovate leaf blade, longer peduncle, and sexual dimorphic flowers. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed that the new species were placed in a unique position in a subclade of Old World Smilax based on ptDNA and nrITS sequences. Combining detailed morphological comparisons and molecular evidence, we validated that S. weniae is an undescribed new species. Moreover, the plastome characteristics of S. weniae are reported.
Cyphia deliae (Campanulaceae: Cyphioideae), a new species from South Africa and Eswatini

Abstract:Cyphia deliae, previously confused with C. bolusii, is described here as a new species. It is a range-restricted species known only from the Barberton Centre of Endemism, a biogeographical region that spans the border between South Africa and Eswatini. This species grows on rocky outcrops in montane grassland. Cyphia deliae can be differentiated from its morphologically most similar relative, C. bolusii, primarily by floral characters. A comparison of specific morphological features distinguishing Cyphia deliae from C. bolusii is provided. In accordance with IUCN Red List categories and criteria, a conservation assessment of Vulnerable B1ab(iii); C2a(i) is recommended for the new species.

Abstract:Aster yaoshanensis sp. nov., a new species of the family Asteraceae is here described and illustrated. The species is presently known only from rock crevices of mountain valleys in Dayaoshan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi autonomous region, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS sequences and complete plastome data have shown that this new species is a member of genus Aster with high support. Morphologically, it mostly resembles A. jishouensis, but it can be easily distinguished from the latter by bract indumentum (glabrous except margin ciliate vs. villous especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and color (green vs. purple), shorter corolla (3.2-3.5 mm vs. 4.5-5.3 mm), bract stalk (obvious, ca.1.2 mm vs. sessile), and different distribution (Guangxi vs. Hunan). The detailed description, distribution map, and photos are provided. This study further elucidates the species identification, phylogeny and characteristic evolution of Aster.

Abstract:Ajania flavida , a new species from western Sichuan and eastern Xizang, China, is described and illustrated. It is readily assigned to A. sect. Ajania owing to its straw-colored, glossy involucres and marginally whitish scarious phyllaries. Within the section, it is distinct in being a shrub of 1−2 m in height, and in having creamy yellow florets. It is superficially similar to A. ramosa in A. sect. Phaeoscyphus , but can easily be distinguished by, among other characters, the plant height, color of the florets and margins of the phyllaries. In addition, we provide a distribution map of the new species.
