Abstract:Water quality is one of the most critical indicators of environmental pollution and it affects all of us. Water contamination can be accidental or intentional and the consequences are drastic unless the appropriate measures are adopted on the spot. This review provides a critical assessment of the applicability of various technologies for real-time water quality monitoring, focusing on those that have been reportedly tested in real-life scenarios. Specifically, the performance of sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers is evaluated in detail, also giving insights into their principle of operation, stability in real on-site applications and mass production options. Such characteristics as sensing range and limit of detection are given for the most promising systems, that were verified outside of laboratory conditions. Then, novel trends of using microwave spectroscopy and chemical materials integration for achieving a higher sensitivity to and selectivity of pollutants in water are described.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., pesticides, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, water hardeners, disinfectant, and other emergent contaminants (phenol, estrogen, gallic acid etc.). We focus on the influence of surface modification of the working electrodes by carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanostructures, imprinted polymers and evaluate the corresponding sensing performance. Especially for pesticides, which are challenging and need special care, we highlight biosensors, such as enzymatic sensors, immunobiosensor, aptasensors, and biomimetic sensors. We discuss the sensors’ overall performance, especially concerning real-sample performance and the capability for actual field application.

Abstract:Industrial development has led to the widespread production of toxic materials, including carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic chemicals. Even with strict management and control measures, such materials still pose threats to human health. Therefore, convenient chemical sensors are required for toxic chemical monitoring, such as optical, electrochemical, nanomaterial-based, and biological-system-based sensors. Many existing and new chemical sensors have been developed, as well as new methods based on novel technologies for detecting toxic materials. The emergence of material sciences and advanced technologies for fabrication and signal-transducing processes has led to substantial improvements in the sensing elements for target recognition and signal-transducing elements for reporting interactions between targets and sensing elements. Many excellent reviews have effectively summarized the general principles and applications of different types of chemical sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on chemical sensor advancements in terms of the sensing and signal-transducing elements, as well as more recent achievements in chemical sensors for toxic material detection. We also discuss recent trends in biosensors for the detection of toxic materials.

Abstract:Real-time chemical sensing is needed to counter the global threats posed by pollution. We combine synthetic biology and materials engineering to develop a living bioelectronic sensor platform with minute detection times. Escherichia coli was programmed to reduce an electrode in a chemical-dependent manner using a modular, eight-component, synthetic electron transport chain. This strain produced significantly more current upon exposure to thiosulfate, an anion that causes microbial blooms. Incorporating a protein switch into the synthetic pathway and encapsulation of microbes with electrodes and conductive nanomaterials yielded a living bioelectronic sensor that could detect an endocrine disruptor within two minutes in riverine water, implicating the signal as mass transfer limited. These findings provide a new platform for miniature, low-power sensors that safeguard ecological and human health.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide a large coverage of recent developments regarding environmental monitoring using metal oxide-based sensors. Particular attention is given to the detection of gases such as H2, COx, SOx, NOx, and CH4. The developments and analyses of the design of sensors and types of metal oxide sensing materials are emphasized. The sensing mechanisms and peculiarities of metal oxides used in chemoresistive sensors are provided. The main parameters that affect the sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide sensors are indicated and their significance to the sensor signal is analyzed. Modern data processing algorithms, employed to optimize the measurement process and processing of the sensor signal, are considered. The existing sensor arrays/e-nose systems for environmental monitoring are summarized, and future prospects and challenges encountered with metal oxide-based sensor arrays are highlighted.

Abstract:The environment is important for human survival, but because of everyday human activities, many pollutants in the drinking water, food and environment may increasingly contribute to the problem of environmental contamination and pose a significant threat to human health. Therefore, the fast and effective monitoring of environmental compound concentrations in environmental samples is required. Electrochemical sensors offer huge potential for online monitoring of specific pollutants in complex environments, owing to their high sensitivity, good selectivity, low cost, simple operation, and high accuracy. This has made them a hot topic. Furthermore, with development of portable electronic technology, the portable electrochemical sensing system with miniaturization has booming in many fields. Therefore, this paper systematically reviews a variety of portable electrochemical sensors that are used for the analysis of pollutants in the environment, and summarizes the current research direction. This is expected to provide researchers with new research ideas and perspectives.

Abstract:The growing world population and the development of civilization put pressure on the environment. Irreversible climate changes, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, land and water degradation, and food scarcity took place. Climate changes affect human health through extreme atmospheric phenomena or indirect effects of ecosystem disruption. The intensification of natural disasters increases the risk of technical failures, and the growing production and release of larger quantities and more new chemical compounds, with different hazard potentials, exceeds the environment's adaptability and societies' ability to monitor changes and conduct safety assessments. The article reviews the knowledge and approach to the possibility of reducing the risks and effects of events resulting from chemical pollution. As stated, prevention of further environmental degradation and increased preparedness for natural disasters caused by climate change is critical to public safety and requires contingency plans to continuously adapt to the changing frequency, intensity, and scale of natural disasters.

Abstract:In a world confronting pollution across diverse environments, fast, sensitive and cost-efficient methods are required to monitor complex chemicals. In particular, microbial bioelectronic sensors can report on the presence of chemicals through electrical signals enabled by biological processes. For example, microbial bioelectronic sensors have been developed for the rapid detection of riverine toxins within minutes of contact, for selective sensing of redox-active pharmaceuticals, and for monitoring of pesticide degradation. However, transferring these laboratory-tested technologies into field-deployable products poses several challenges: sensor sensitivity, specificity, longevity and robustness need to be improved. In this Review, we discuss the design of field-deployable microbial bioelectronic sensors, including chassis selection, approaches for rewiring electron transfer, strategies to establish the cell–electrode interface and fabrication methods. Importantly, we outline key challenges and possible solutions for the application of such sensors in the real world.

Abstract:Toxic pollutants in the environment, such as toxins and abused drugs, have posed a major threat to human health and ecosystem security. It is extremely desirable to develop simple, low-cost, sensitive, and reliable techniques for the detection of these pollutants in the environment. As a booming analytical method, photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors possess low background noise and high sensitivity. The performances of PEC sensors are fundamentally related to the photoelectric conversion efficiency, which mainly depends on the properties of photoactive materials. This review aims to summarize the engineered photoactive materials, i.e., semiconductors and semiconductor-based heterojunctions, as well as their actual applications, with emphasis on sensing mechanisms in PEC sensors for the analysis of toxins and abused drugs in the environment. Finally, the future research perspectives in this field are also discussed.

This is due to the powers exhibited by organometallic compounds, which are further enhanced by the field of bioengineering. Organometallic compounds have a wide range of biological activity and find uses in industrial and material science fields. Their unique ability to specifically target and overcome constraints faced by traditional counterparts makes them potential contenders for sensor technology. These compounds are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, allowing them to be utilized as sensors for detecting various chemicals or conditions. Additionally, the versatility of organometallic compounds enables their integration into different sensor platforms, making them suitable for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and industrial quality control. Abstract:Air pollutants originating from various sources like vehicular emission, power stations, factories, refineries, industrial emissions, and burning of garbage in open and laboratories, include many toxic gases and pollutants like hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene, toluene, xylene, and so on, ammonia (NH3), carbon‐monoxide (CO), carbon‐dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and so on, that are constantly released into the atmosphere and continuously deteriorating our natural environment and surroundings. These pollutants create harmful effects on the ecosystem and affect human health. Though there are many devices available for monitoring these pollutants and toxic gases, they are very expensive and time‐consuming. Since the safety of the life of human health, plants, animals, and their surrounding area on topmost priority, thus there is a significant need to develop user‐friendly and environmentally friendly sensing devices for real‐time monitoring of air pollutant emissions, which are extremely hazardous to the environment, breathable air, and human health. Extensive research has been made by researchers to develop an ideal sensor suitable for the environment and which can be within the reach of the masses. This review article presents different types of gas sensors and the technologies on which they work upon. We have also discussed the different gas sensors with their principle of operation. The working, advantages, and disadvantages of each type of sensor have also been discussed and compared with each other. Despite extensive research over several years to develop a highly sensitive, selective, and quick response sensor for the detection of flammable and toxic gases, the future scope and perspective for scientists are also proposed at the end of this article.

Abstract:Real-time chemical sensing is crucial for applications in environmental and health monitoring 1 . Biosensors can detect a variety of molecules through genetic circuits that use these chemicals to trigger the synthesis of a coloured protein, thereby producing an optical signal 2,3,4 . However, the process of protein expression limits the speed of this sensing to approximately half an hour, and optical signals are often difficult to detect in situ 5,6,7,8 . Here we combine synthetic biology and materials engineering to develop biosensors that produce electrical readouts and have detection times of minutes. We programmed Escherichia coli to produce an electrical current in response to specific chemicals using a modular, eight-component, synthetic electron transport chain. As designed, this strain produced current following exposure to thiosulfate, an anion that causes microbial blooms, within 2 min. This amperometric sensor was then modified to detect an endocrine disruptor. The incorporation of a protein switch into the synthetic pathway and encapsulation of the bacteria with conductive nanomaterials enabled the detection of the endocrine disruptor in urban waterway samples within 3 min. Our results provide design rules to sense various chemicals with mass-transport-limited detection times and a new platform for miniature, low-power bioelectronic sensors that safeguard ecological and human health.

Abstract:Environmental monitoring involves several steps such as sampling, sample handling and sample transportation to specialized laboratories, sample preparation and analysis. Traditional environmental monitoring approaches are based on discrete sampling methods followed by laboratory analysis. These approaches do not improve our understanding of the natural processes governing chemical species behavior, their transport and bioavailability, or the relationship between anthropogenic releases and their long-term impact on aquatic systems[1]. The challenge of environmental monitoring in situ requires new and improved analytical devices featuring precision, sensitivity, specificity, rapidity, and ease of operation to detect decreasing concentrations of an ever growing array of pollutants. Such devices must be comparable to or better than traditional analytical systems, and must be simple to handle, small, cheap, able to provide reliable information in real-time, and must be sensitive and selective for the analyte of interest, and suitable for in situ monitoring[2]. Biosensors not only fulfill all these requirements but also have applications in many areas such as clinical diagnostics, forensic chemistry, pharmaceutical studies, food quality control and environmental monitoring. A biosensor is an analytical device for the detection of an analyte that combines a biological component with a physicochemical detector component. It consists of 3 parts: (1) the sensitive biological element (biological material such as tissue, microorganisms, organelles, cell receptors, enzymes, antibodies, nucleic acids, etc.), a biologically derived material or biomimic; (2) the transducer or the detector element (works in a physicochemical way; optical, piezoelectric, electrochemical, etc.) that transforms the signal resulting from the interaction of the analyte with the biological element into another signal that can be more easily measured and quantified; (3) associated electronics or signal processors that are primarily responsible for the display of the results in a user-friendly way[3]. Trends in Environmental Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:Recent developments of biosensor technologies for environmental applications are reviewed in this article. Biosensors offer simple, rapid, sensitive and selective detection method for analysis of environmental contaminants mainly including phenols, heavy metals, toxins, pesticides and other organic pollutants. Biosensors, which are usually classified according to the biorecognition elements, e.g., enzyme, DNA, antibody and whole-cell, are discussed respectively. Several examples of their applications for determination of environmental contaminants are reviewed. Special attention will be paid to novel biosensing systems based on new sensing elements and transduction principles. In addition, we present the beneficial use of nanomaterials in constructing biosensors. Finally, a general overview is provided about the future trends, the limitations and challenges in this field.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants in water represent long-term and unpredictable threats to both environmental and human health due to their persistence and bioaccumulation. Current research predominantly focuses on their removal rather than sustained monitoring. This review comprehensively investigates advanced sensor technologies for detecting these contaminants in water, critically evaluating biosensors, optical sensors, electrochemical sensors, and nanomaterial sensors. Elucidating the operational principles, performance metrics such as detection thresholds, and the pros and cons of their practical applications, the review addresses a significant research gap in environmental monitoring. Moreover, it enhances understanding of sensor effectiveness, which in turn guides researchers in selecting the right sensor types for various environmental scenarios. Furthermore, by emphasizing the integration of nanotechnology and the standardization of evaluation protocols, it promotes the development of robust, deployable sensing solutions. Ultimately, this leads to the proposal of a strategic framework aimed at significantly improving the detection capabilities of emerging contaminants and supporting the preservation of environmental health.
