Abstract:A modular synthesis of Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes from readily available chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and chiral diamines is disclosed for the first time. The well-defined Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes show unique structure and coordination chemistry including an unusual tridentate coordination effect of 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The isolated air- and moisture-stable Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes act as versatile precatalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of isocoumarines, benzothiophene 1,1-dioxides, and ketones. Moreover, on the basis of the identification of reaction intermediates by stoichiometric reactions and NMR experiments, together with the DFT calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was proposed.

Abstract:We computationally formulated a metal-free strategy to construct bifunctional active sites for reversible H2 activation, using a N-centered group as a Lewis basic site and a PV-centered group as a Lewis acidic site. By embedding the active sites into five-membered and 6-membered rings, we designed a series of molecules, some of which have feasible kinetic barriers to perform catalytic hydrogenation, calling for experimental realizations.

Abstract:In this paper, the density functional theory study was performed to investigate the reaction mechanism of acceptorless dehydrogenation catalyzed by bifunctional catalysts. The calculation results indicate that the catalyst bearing the Co(III) center adopts the inner-sphere stepwise dehydrogenation mechanism. The H 2 formation was found to be the rate-determining step, and the proton-shuttle type transition state effectively reduces the activation energy barrier. Furthermore, the catalytic activities of the noble metals (Rh and Ir) were investigated and compared. The results suggest that the noble metals prefer the outer-sphere bifunctional transfer mechanism for the dehydrogenation reaction. Frontier molecular orbital analysis shows that the HOMO-LUMO gap of the active species increases along with the periodic number, which leads to a weakening of the coordination strength of the substrate to the metal center, resulting in the different mechanistic selectivity toward dehydrogenation reaction. In addition, based on the distortion-interaction analysis, the different activation energy barrier in the H 2 formation step is illuminated. The reduced ionic radii of the Co result in lower deformation energies of the catalyst and substrate structures in the H 2 formation transition state, thus lowering the activation energy barrier. Our results reveal the advantages of base metal in dehydrogenation reactions, which is expected to provide theoretical guidance for future catalyst design.

Abstract:A heteronuclear dual transition metal atom catalyst is a promising strategy to solve and relieve the increasing energy and environment crisis. However, the role of each atom still does not efficiently differentiate due to the high activity but low detectivity of each transition metal in the synergistic catalytic process when considering the influence of heteronuclear induced atomic difference for each transition metal atom, thus seriously hindering intrinsic mechanism finding. Herein, we proposed coordinate environment vary induced heterogenization of homonuclear dual transition metal, which inherits the advantage of heteronuclear transition metal atom catalyst but also controls the variable of the two atoms to explore the underlying mechanism. Based on this proposal, employing density functional theory study and machine learning, 23 kinds of homonuclear transition metals are doping in four asymmetric C3N for heterogenization to evaluate the underlying catalytic mechanism. Our results demonstrate that five catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance with a low limiting potential of -0.28 to -0.48 V. In the meantime, a new mechanism, ‘capture-charge distribution-recapture-charge redistribution’, is developed for both side-on and end-on configuration. More importantly, the pronate site of the first hydrogenation is identified based on this mechanism. Our work not only initially makes a deep understanding of the transition dual metal-based heteronuclear catalyst indirectly but also broadens the development of complicated homonuclear dual atom catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions have important scientific significance and broad application prospects in energy storage, fine chemicals, and pharmaceuticals synthesis. Homogeneous transition metal complexes are widely applied in this filed due to the advantages of high activity, high selectivity, and clear structure-activity relationships. In this mini-review, mainly based on our, as well as others' recent theoretical results, we summarize the understanding of transition metal center effects of oxidation state, electronic structure, group, and row difference, etc., on the mechanisms of the catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions. This mini-review may provide some useful suggestions and prospects for the future design of cheap, efficient, and practical homogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Cascade engineered synthesis of the drug butamben (n-butyl-p-aminobenzoate), a local anaesthetic, which is used for the treatment of chronic pain, is presented here. A new multifunctional heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized, characterized and used for the direct synthesis of n-butyl-p-aminobenzoate by hydrogenation and esterification. A mixture of p-nitrobenzoic acid, n-butanol, hydrogen, acetonitrile as solvent and catalyst was used and hydrogenated in which hydrogenation precedes esterification. A series of aluminum exchanged dodecatungstophosphoric acids (DTP) (Alx-DTP; x = 0.33–1) (5–20% w/w) supported on mesocellular foam silica (MCF) were prepared. 2% Fe loaded on 15% Al0.66DTP/MCF showed the best activity for one-pot synthesis because the metal and acid sites had proper strength and distribution on MCF. Reaction mechanism and kinetic model were developed. The catalyst 2%Fe-15% Al0.66DTP/MCF was found reusable for four catalytic cycles. This work presents an interesting case of reaction engineering using multi-functional catalyst useful in synthesis of a pharmaceutical drug butamben and has potential applications in other areas.
Mechanistic insights into interfacial nano-synergistic effects in trimetallic Rh-on-NiCo on-CNTs for room temperature solvent-free hydrogenations

Abstract:Mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Ni/CNTs, Co/CNTs and NiCo/CNTs) were synthesized at room temperature (RT) via hydrazine hydrate reduction method without any surfactant. The galvanic replacement reaction was exploited to prepare Rh/Ni/CNTs, Rh/Co/CNTs and Rh/NiCo/CNTs supported nanocatalysts. Prepared nanocatalysts were extensively characterized using an array of advanced analytical techniques. The catalytic performance of the catalysts was evaluated in the hydrogenation of tetralin. Reduced Rh/NiCo/CNTs catalyst (Rh-on-NiCo NP) exhibited high catalytic activity at RT, significantly improved as compared to Rh/Ni/CNTs and Rh/Co/CNTs due to the interfacial nano-synergy effect among different metallic related species (Rh, Ni and Co). In-situ XAS results confirmed the mechanism of the interfacial nano-synergy effect, wherein Rh sites provided activated hydrogen species (H*), and H* was subsequently transferred to the surface of NiCo NPs; while tetralin was adsorbed and activated at NiCo sites, reacting with H* to produce decalin. The present work proposed a novel strategy to design highly efficient and stable multimetallic catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Transition metal atoms, usually as active sites on the single-atom alloy catalysts, may access remarkable properties by tuning surface electronic structures of the matrix metals. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the whole process of hydrogen interaction with the single-atom Zn- and Co-doped Cu(1 0 0) and Cu(1 1 1) surfaces by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic modelling. It is found that, the repulsive interaction of hydrogen and Zn dopant strongly increases the H2 dissociation barrier, the hydrogen adsorption energy and the surface diffusion/permeation barrier. In contrast, the Co-doped Cu surfaces yield some favorable reaction characters such as easy formation of subsurface hydrogen species. DFT-based microkinetic modelling further reveals that the coverage of surface and subsurface hydrogen on the Zn- and Co-doped Cu surfaces is strongly pressure-dependent. The formation of hot atoms involving subsurface hydrogen species observed on the Co-doped Cu catalysts under realistic reaction conditions may provide a new reaction pathway to accelerate surface hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Dearomatization of pyridine is important in organic synthesis while the control of its selectivity is difficult, the hydroboration catalyzed by transitional metal is an effective solution. In this work, the detailed reaction mechanism of hydroboration of pyridines catalyzed by [Cu-Fe] heterobimetallic catalyst was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic mechanism and the influence factors of catalytic activity and regioselectivity were discussed. Our calculated results show that the hydroboration of pyridines catalyzed by the [Cu-Fe] heterobimetallic catalyst involves three processes: B-H bond activation, activated Bpin-pyridine formation, and Bpin-pyridine reduction addition. The activated Bpin-pyridine formation process is the rate-determining step. In the Bpin-pyridine reduction addition process, the addition reaction proceeds via the ionic intermediate mechanism, instead of the single electron transfer (SET) mechanism. Both the catalytic activity and the regioselectivity are determined by the atomic charge distribution. Our calculation results are consistent with and provide an explanation for the experimental observations, being particularly helpful for the further development of pyridine dearomatization and the design of other catalytic transformations.

Abstract:The alloying of precious metals with non-noble metals in the active components for hydrogen activation during regeneration of the solid acid catalyst in hydrogenation conditions, can reduce the cost of the catalyst and improve the catalytic efficiency of precious metals. However, it lacks a theoretical method to guide the development of non-noble-metal-based alloy catalysts. In this work, the dependence of hydrogen adsorption and dissociation of alloy models on various non-noble-metal bases has been investigated by first-principles calculations. When the surface metal elements are in the same line of periodic table, the adsorption strength of hydrogen on the alloy weakens with the increase of the atomic number of the surface metal element. Importantly, we establish a screening model to make high-throughput predictions for non-noble-metal-based alloy modified with precious metal. This work provides a reasonable design strategy to guide the development of alloy catalysts used in hydrogen activation by identifying specific non-noble-metal bases. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Metal hydrides are useful hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalysts due to their reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption properties, especially in important energy-related reactions. However, the relationship between the structure of metal hydrides and their catalytic performance is still elusive. In this work, the critical role of electronic structure and H chemical potential of metal hydrides in catalysis is demonstrated by Al substitution of the classic hydrogen storage alloy LaNi5. Theoretical calculations reveal that electron transfer from Al to Ni reduces the adsorption energy of the partially hydrogenated intermediates and leads to lower reaction barriers. Al substitution also reduces the H chemical potential of LaNi5 and increases the availability of bulk-H in the catalytic process. The bulk-H serves as an extra hydrogen source for hydrogenation and facilitates the formation of H-2 in dehydrogenation. Thus, the chemically synthesized LaNi4.5Al0.5 nanoparticles exhibit considerable bifunctional catalytic performance for the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of carbazole-type liquid organic hydrogen carriers.

Abstract:An in-depth understanding of the interactions between hydrogen and transition metal catalysts is of great significance in exploring novel heterogeneous hydrogenation reaction mechanisms. Herein we present a comprehensive study of the interactions of hydrogen on active metal surfaces by using a multiscale method. Six different transition metals of Ni-group and Cu-group are considered. Different from two stable (111) and (100) surfaces, the energetic results of hydrogen species diffusing on and permeating into the active (110) surfaces are fully addressed from three-dimensional potential energy surfaces and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio thermodynamics calculations show that a stable adsorption phase diagram with full hydrogen coverage preferably forms with decreasing reaction temperature and increasing hydrogen partial pressure, especially on the (110) surfaces of Ni-group metals without consideration of the reconstruction events. During the evolutions of metal nanoparticles under moderate reaction conditions, the active (110) surface is difficult to be exposed for Ni-group metal nanoparticles, while for Cu-group metal nanoparticles it is easy to get exposed. These important thermodynamic results will contribute to an in-depth understanding of the interactions between hydrogen species and transition metal catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Because of the requirements of sustainable development as well as the desirability of using molecular hydrogen as a chemical reagent, it is of paramount importance and great challenge to develop highly active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including substituted nitroarenes. We approach this question by probing unsupported bimetallic nanoparticles. A series of novel bimetallic RhxNiy (x, y = 1, 2, 3) nanoparticles were successfully prepared using our "noble metal-induced reduction" strategy. Unsupported Rh3Ni1 nanoparticles were subsequently identified to be a highly active and exceedingly selective catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes under ambient conditions, underscoring a remarkable synergistic effect of the two metals. Further experiments showed that the Rh3Ni1 catalyst could be a highly efficient, selective, and recyclable catalyst for a range of nitroarene substrates. This work showcased the value of bimetallic nanoparticles in catalysts development for sustainable chemistry.

Abstract:Borohydrides offer promise as potential carriers for hydrogen storage due to their high hydrogen concentration. However, the strong chemical bonding within borohydrides poses challenges for efficient hydrogen release during usage and restricts the re-hydrogenation process when attempting to regenerate the material. These high thermodynamic and kinetic barriers present obstacles in achieving reversible de-hydrogenation and re-hydrogenation of borohydrides, impeding their practical application in hydrogen storage systems. Employing density functional theory calculations, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into the influence of transition metals on both the BH 4 cluster, a fundamental building block of borohydrides, and pure boron, which is formed as the end product following hydrogen release. Our research reveals correlations among the d -band center, work function, and surface energy of 3d and 4d transition metals. These correlations are directly linked to the weakening of bonding within the BH 4 cluster when adsorbed on catalyst surfaces. On the other hand, we also explore how various intrinsic properties of transition metals influence the formation of boron vacancies and the hydrogen bonding process. By establishing a comprehensive correlation between the weakening of sp 3 hybridization in the BH 4 cluster and the sp 2 hybridization in boron, we facilitate the identification and screening of optimal candidates capable of achieving reversible de-hydrogenation and re-hydrogenation in borohydrides.
