Abstract:We present a simple combinatorial method to encode 3-dimensional manifolds, based on their Heegaard diagrams. The notion of a Gauss diagram of a 3-manifold is introduced. We check the conditions for a Gauss diagram to represent a closed manifold and a manifold with boundary.

Abstract:We usually think of 2-dimensional manifolds as surfaces embedded in Euclidean 3-space. Since humans cannot visualise Euclidean spaces of higher dimensions, it appears to be impossible to give pictorial representations of higher-dimensional manifolds. However, one can in fact encode the topology of a surface in a 1-dimensional picture. By analogy, one can draw 2-dimensional pictures of 3-manifolds (Heegaard diagrams), and 3-dimensional pictures of 4-manifolds (Kirby diagrams). With the help of open books one can likewise represent at least some 5-manifolds by 3-dimensional diagrams, and contact geometry can be used to reduce these to drawings in the 2-plane.In this paper, I shall explain how to draw such pictures and how to use them for answering topological and geometric questions. The work on 5-manifolds is joint with Fan Ding and Otto van Koert.

Manifold Diagrams for Higher Categories

Abstract:We develop a graphical calculus of manifold diagrams which generalises string and surface diagrams to arbitrary dimensions. Manifold diagrams are pasting diagrams for $(\infty, n)$-categories that admit a semi-strict composition operation for which associativity and unitality is strict. The weak interchange law satisfied by composition of manifold diagrams is determined geometrically through isotopies of diagrams. By building upon framed combinatorial topology, we can classify critical points in isotopies at which the arrangement of cells changes. This allows us to represent manifold diagrams combinatorially and use them as shapes with which to probe $(\infty, n)$-categories, presented as $n$-fold Segal spaces. Moreover, for any system of labels for the singularities in a manifold diagram, we show how to generate a free $(\infty, n)$-category.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Gauss map of surfaces in 3-dimensional Heisenberg group using the Gans model of the hyperbolic plane. We establish a relationship between the tension field of the Gauss map and mean curvature of a surface in $\mathcal{H}_{3}$.

Abstract:For a compact 3-manifold N with connected nonempty boundary, let Gamma be an admissible trivalent graph in partial derivative N that decomposes partial derivative N into a set of disks. As an extension of small covers, from a (Z(2))(3)-coloring lambda on partial derivative N - Gamma, one can get a closed 3-manifold M-lambda that admits a locally standard (Z(2))(3)-action.Suppose N is irreducible and atoroidal: say, a handlebody. We give a combinatorial necessary and sufficient condition for a (Z(2))(3)-colorable pair (N, Gamma) to admit a right-angled hyperbolic structure, which naturally induces a hyperbolic structure on M-lambda.

Abstract:We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We define formal Gauss-Manin connection matrices in the Aomoto complex and prove that, for all arrangements and all local systems, these formal connection matrices specialize to Gauss-Manin connection matrices.

Abstract:We describe an algebra of meromorphic functions on the Siegel domain of genus two which contains Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic index six subgroup of the symplectic group, which is closed under three canonical derivations of the Siegel domain. The main ingredients of our study are the moduli of enhanced genus two curves, Gauss-Manin connection and the modular vector fields living on such moduli spaces.
SU(2)-abelian graph manifolds with a single JSJ torus

Abstract:A 3-manifold is called \emph{SU(2)}-abelian if every SU(2)-representation of its fundamental group has abelian image. We classify, in terms of the Seifert coefficients, SU(2)-abelian 3-manifolds among the family of graph manifolds obtained by gluing two Seifert spaces both fibred over a disk and with two singular fibers. Finally, we prove that these SU(2)-abelian manifolds are Heegaard Floer homology L-spaces.

Abstract:We explore to what extent the properties of a Gauss diagram are affected by the choice of its Hamiltonian cycle. We present an example of a realizable Gauss diagram and an unrealizable Gauss diagram that differ only by a choice of the Hamiltonian cycle. We present an example of two Gauss diagrams that correspond to different curves and differ only by a choice of the Hamiltonian cycle. We prove that a certain natural type of change of the Hamiltonian cycle preserves the realizability of the Gauss diagram.

Abstract:We develop a theory of link projections to trivalent spines of 3-manifolds. We prove a Reidemeister Theorem providing a set of combinatorial moves sufficient to relate the projections of isotopic links. We also show that any link admits a crossingless projection to any special spine and we refine our theorem to provide a set of combinatorial moves sufficient to relate crossingless diagrams. Finally, we discuss the connection to Turaev's shadow world, interpreting our result as a statement about shadow equivalence of a class of 4-manifolds.

Abstract:We describe a Lie Algebra on the moduli space of non-rigid compact Calabi–Yau threefolds enhanced with differential forms and its relation to the Bershadsky–Cecotti–Ooguri–Vafa holomorphic anomaly equation. In particular, we describe algebraic topological string partition functions ${{\bf F}_{g}^{\rm alg}, g \geq 1}$, which encode the polynomial structure of holomorphic and non-holomorphic topological string partition functions. Our approach is based on Grothendieck’s algebraic de Rham cohomology and on the algebraic Gauss–Manin connection. In this way, we recover a result of Yamaguchi–Yau and Alim–Länge in an algebraic context. Our proofs use the fact that the special polynomial generators defined using the special geometry of deformation spaces of Calabi–Yau threefolds correspond to coordinates on such a moduli space. We discuss the mirror quintic as an example.

Combed Trisection Diagrams and Non-Semisimple 4-Manifold Invariants

Abstract:Given a triple $H$ of (possibly non-semisimple) Hopf algebras equipped with pairings satisfying a set of properties, we describe a construction of an associated smooth, scalar invariant $\tau_H(X,\pi)$ of a simply connected, compact, oriented $4$-manifold $X$ and an open book $\pi$ on its boundary. This invariant generalizes an earlier semisimple version and is calculated using a trisection diagram $T$ for $X$ and a certain type of combing of the trisection surface. We explain a general calculation of this invariant for a family of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary called Stein nuclei, introduced by Yasui. After investigating many low-dimensional Hopf algebras up to dimension 11, we have not been able to find non-semisimple Hopf triples that satisfy the criteria for our invariant. Nonetheless, appropriate Hopf triples may exist outside the scope of our explorations.

Effective Computation of the Heegaard Genus of 3-Manifolds

Abstract:The Heegaard genus is a fundamental invariant of 3-manifolds. However, computing the Heegaard genus of a triangulated 3-manifold is NP-hard, and while algorithms exist, little work has been done in making such an algorithm efficient and practical for implementation. Current algorithms use almost normal surfaces, which are an extension of the algorithm-friendly normal surface theory but which add considerable complexity for both running time and implementation.

Abstract:Morse functions are important objects and tools in understanding topologies of manifolds since the 20th century. Their classification has been natural and difficult problems, and surprisingly, this is recently developing. Since the 2010's, results for cases of surfaces have been presented by Gelbukh, Marzantowicz and Michalak for example. We have also longed for higher dimensional cases. We present a classification of Morse functions on $3$-dimensional manifolds represented as connected sums of manifolds of Heegaard genus one. We concentrate on Morse functions such that preimages of single points containing no singular points are disjoint unions of spheres and tori. Existence of such functions implies that the $3$-dimensional closed and connected manifolds are of such manifolds. This has been shown by Saeki in 2006 and we further study structures of these functions.

Abstract:We establish a correspondence between trisections of smooth, compact, oriented $4$--manifolds with connected boundary and diagrams describing these trisected $4$--manifolds. Such a diagram comes in the form of a compact, oriented surface with boundary together with three tuples of simple closed curves, with possibly fewer curves than the genus of the surface, satisfying a pairwise standardness condition. This should be thought of as the $4$--dimensional analog of a sutured Heegaard diagram for a sutured $3$--manifold. We also give many foundational examples.

Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for 3-manifolds with non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and 2-generated fundamental group. We deduce a variety of Corollaries. Note this is not a complete classification of such manifolds. In particular we believe that one of the families in our list is empty. If you know something about hyperbolic 2-bridge knot exteriors and their finite sheeted covering spaces you might want to finish this off. Thanks.

Abstract:We investigate isometric immersions $f\colon M^n\to\R^{n+2}$, $n\geq 3$, of Riemannian manifolds into Euclidean space with codimension two that admit isometric deformations that preserve the metric of the Gauss map. In precise terms, the preservation of the third fundamental form of the submanifold must be ensured throughout the deformation. For minimal isometric deformations of minimal submanifolds this is always the case. Our main result is of a local nature and states that if $f$ is neither minimal nor reducible, then it is a hypersurface of an isometrically deformable hypersurface $F\colon\tilde{M}^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ such that the deformations of $F$ induce those of $f$. Moreover, for a particular class of such submanifolds, a complete local parametric description is provided.

Abstract:Abstract This paper describes how the elliptic and hyperbolic regions of a surface are related to stable Gauss maps on closed orientable surfaces immersed in three-dimensional space. We will show that for certain connected, closed, orientable surfaces containing a finite number of embedded circles that delineate two distinct types of regions, if all regions of one type are homeomorphic to a cylinder, then there exists an immersion $$f: M \rightarrow \mathbb {R}^3$$ f : M → R 3 for which the Gauss map is a fold Gauss map.

Abstract:A closed 3-manifold $M$ may be described up to some indeterminacy by a Heegaard diagram $\mathcal{D}$. The question "Does $M$ smoothly embed in $\mathbb{R}^4$?'' is equivalent to a property of $\mathcal{D}$ which we call $\textit{doubly unlinked}$ (DU). This perspective leads to an enhancement of Hantzsche's embedding obstruction.

Abstract:Abstract We show that a general ordinary Gushel–Mukai (GM) threefold can be reconstructed from its Kuznetsov component together with an extra piece of data coming from tautological subbundle of the Grassmannian . We also prove that determines the birational isomorphism class of , while determines the isomorphism class of a special GM threefold if it is general. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Kuznetsov–Perry in dimension 3 under a mild assumption. Finally, we use to restate a conjecture of Debarre–Iliev–Manivel regarding fibers of the period map for ordinary GM threefolds.
