Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each component of the filledin Julia set containing critical points is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:We construct Ahlfors regular Cantor sets $K$ of small dimension in the plane, such that the Hausdorff measure on $K$ is equivalent to the harmonic measure associated to its complement. In particular the Green function in $R^2 \backslash K$ satisfies $G^p (x) \simeq \mathrm{dist} (x, K)^\delta$ whenever $\mathrm{dist} (x, K) \le 1$ and $p$ is far from $K$.

Abstract:We prove that on every compact Riemann surface $M$ there is a Cantor set $C \subset M$ such that $M \setminus C$ admits a proper conformal constant mean curvature one ($\mathrm{CMC\text{-}1}$) immersion into hyperbolic $3$-space $\mathbb{H}^3$. Moreover, we obtain that every bordered Riemann surface admits an almost proper $\mathrm{CMC\text{-}1}$ face into de Sitter $3$-space $\mathbb{S}_1^3$, and we show that on every compact Riemann surface $M$ there is a Cantor set $C \subset M$ such that $M \setminus C$ admits an almost proper $\mathrm{CMC\text{-}1}$ face into $\mathbb{S}_1^3$. These results follow from different uniform approximation theorems for holomorphic null curves in $\mathbb{C}^2 \times \mathbb{C}^*$ that we also establish in this paper.

Abstract:Bing-Whitehead Cantor sets were introduced by DeGryse and Osborne in dimension three and greater to produce examples of Cantor sets that were non standard (wild), but still had simply connected complement. In contrast to an earlier example of Kirkor, the construction techniques could be generalized to dimensions bigger than three. These Cantor sets in $S^{3}$ are constructed by using Bing or Whitehead links as stages in defining sequences. Ancel and Starbird, and separately Wright characterized the number of Bing links needed in such constructions so as to produce Cantor sets. However it was unknown whether varying the number of Bing and Whitehead links in the construction would produce non equivalent Cantor sets. Using a generalization of geometric index, and a careful analysis of three dimensional intersection patterns, we prove that Bing-Whitehead Cantor sets are equivalently embedded in $S^3$ if and only if their defining sequences differ by some finite number of Whitehead constructions. As a consequence, there are uncountably many non equivalent such Cantor sets in $S^{3}$ constructed with genus one tori and with simply connected complement.

Abstract:We survey the recent history of the conformal Calabi-Yau problem consisting in determining the complex structures admitted by complete bounded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Moreover, we prove that for any minimally convex domain $\Omega$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and any compact Riemann surface $R$ there is a Cantor set $C$ in $R$ whose complement $R\setminus C$ is the complex structure of a complete proper minimal surface in $\Omega$.

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:For Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps, we prove that they are quasisymmetrically equivalent to standard Cantor circles (i.e., connected components are round circles). This gives a quasisymmetric uniformization of all Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps. By analyzing the combinatorial information of the rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, we give a computational formula of the number of the Cantor circle hyperbolic components in the moduli space of rational maps for any fixed degree. We calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of the Julia sets which are Cantor circles, and prove that for any Cantor circle hyperbolic component H in the space of rational maps, the infimum of the Hausdorff dimensions of the Julia sets of the maps in H is equal to the conformal dimension of the Julia set of any representative f(0) is an element of H, and that the supremum of the Hausdorff dimensions is equal to 2.
Interior of certain sums and continuous images of very thin Cantor sets

Abstract:We show that for all Cantor set $K_1$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$, it is always possible to find another Cantor set $K_2$ so that the sum $g(K_1)+ K_2$ (where $g$ is a $C^1$ local diffeomorphism) has non-empty interior, and the existence of the interior is robust under small perturbation of the mapping. More generally, we can also show that the image set $H(\alpha, K_1,K_2)$, where $H$ is some $C^1$ function on ${\mathbb R}^N\times{\mathbb R}^d\times{\mathbb R}^d$ with non-vanishing Jacobian, have non-empty interior for $\alpha$ all in an open ball of ${\mathbb R}^N$. This result allows us to show that all Cantor sets are not topologically universal using $C^1$ local diffeomorphism, proving a stronger version of the topological Erdős similarity conjecture. Moreover, we are also able to construct a Cantor set of dimension $d$ on ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$, whose distance set has an interior.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Cantor Julia sets with Hausdorff dimension two. In particular, such examples can be found in cubic polynomials. The proof is based on the characterization of the parameter spaces and dynamical planes of cubic polynomials by Branner-Hubbard, and the parabolic bifurcation theory developed by Shishikura in 1990s.

Abstract:Suppose that $K$ and $ K'$ are two affine Cantor sets. It is shown that the sum set $K+K'$ has equal box and Hausdorff dimensions and in this number named $s$, $H^s(K+K')<\infty$. Moreover, for almost every pair $(K,K')$ satisfying $HD(K)+HD(K')\leq 1$, there is a dense subset $D\subset \mathbb R$ such that $H^s(K+\lambda K')=0$, for all $\lambda\in D$. It also is shown that in the context of affine Cantor sets with two increasing maps, there are generically (topological and almost everywhere) five possible structures for their sum: a Cantor set, an L, R, M-Cantorval or a finite union of closed intervals.

Abstract:We introduce a topological object, called hairy Cantor set, which in many ways enjoys the universal features of objects like Jordan curve, Cantor set, Cantor bouquet, hairy Jordan curve, etc. We give an axiomatic characterisation of hairy Cantor sets, and prove that any two such objects in the plane are ambiently homeomorphic. Hairy Cantor sets appear in the study of the dynamics of holomorphic maps with infinitely many renormalisation structures. They are employed to link the fundamental concepts of polynomial-like renormalisation by Douady-Hubbard with the arithmetic conditions obtained by Herman-Yoccoz in the study of the dynamics of analytic circle diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group \Gamma , we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of pseudometric structures on \Gamma equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Teichmüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudometrics. As corollaries we obtain results regarding continuous extensions of translation length functions to the space of geodesic currents and settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.

Abstract:We show that for at most three closed geodesics with linearly independent directions, the homeomorphism type of its complement in the 3-torus is determine by the orbit of their direction vectors subspaces under the action of $\PSL_3(\mathbb{Z}).$ Moreover, we provide asymptotically sharp volume bounds for a family of closed geodesics complements. The bounds depend only on the distance in the Farey graph.
