Abstract:Precision measurements on the hydrogen molecule are of fundamental importance in understanding molecular theory. Comparison of accurate experimental data and theoretical results are used to test the quantum electrodynamics theory and determine physical constants used in the calculation. We review recent advances and perspectives in the precision spectroscopy of molecular hydrogen, representing state-of-the-art molecular spectroscopy methods and cutting-edge high-precision calculations.

Abstract:Accurate EF1Σg+-X1Σg+$$EF^1\varSigma ^+_g{-}X^1\varSigma ^+_g$$ transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly excited vibrational quantum number, v = 11, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H2∗$$\hbox {H}_2^*$$, produced via the photodissociation of H2S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of 45 MHz or 0.0015 cm−1. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing 7pπ$$7p\pi$$ electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions due to reduced ac-Stark effects. Using known EF level energies, the level energies of X(v = 11, J = 1, 3–5) states are derived with accuracies of typically 0.002 cm−1. These experimental values are in excellent agreement with and are more accurate than the results obtained from the most advanced ab initio molecular theory calculations including relativistic and QED contributions.

Abstract:High-resolution coherent Raman spectroscopic measurements of all three tritium-containing molecular hydrogen isotopologues T$_2$, DT and HT were performed to determine the ground electronic state fundamental Q-branch ($v=0 \rightarrow 1, \Delta J = 0$) transition frequencies at accuracies of $0.0005$ cm$^{-1}$. An over hundred-fold improvement in accuracy over previous experiments allows the comparison with the latest ab initio calculations in the framework of Non-Adiabatic Perturbation Theory including nonrelativisitic, relativisitic and QED contributions. Excellent agreement is found between experiment and theory, thus providing a verification of the validity of the NAPT-framework for these tritiated species. While the transition frequencies were corrected for ac-Stark shifts, the contributions of non-resonant background as well as quantum interference effects between resonant features in the nonlinear spectroscopy were quantitatively investigated, also leading to corrections to the transition frequencies. Methods of saturated CARS with the observation of Lamb dips, as well as the use of continuous-wave radiation for the Stokes frequency were explored, that might pave the way for future higher-accuracy CARS measurements.

Abstract:Saturated absorption measurements of transitions in the (2-0) band of radioactive tritium hydride are performed with the ultrasensitive noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical-heterodyne molecular spectroscopy intracavity absorption technique in the range 1460–1510 nm. The hyperfine structure of rovibrational transitions of tritium hydride, in contrast to that of hydrogen deuteride, exhibits a single isolated hyperfine component, allowing for the accurate determination of hyperfineless rovibrational transition frequencies, resulting in R(0)=203 396 426 692(22) kHz and R(1)=205 380 033 644(21) kHz . This corresponds to an accuracy 3 orders of magnitude better than previous measurements in tritiated hydrogen molecules. Abstract:Neutral quantum absorbers in optical lattices have emerged as a leading platform for achieving clocks with exquisite spectroscopic resolution. However, the studies of these clocks and their systematic shifts have so far been limited to atoms. Here, we extend this architecture to an ensemble of diatomic molecules and experimentally realize an accurate lattice clock based on pure molecular vibration. We evaluate the leading systematics, including the characterization of nonlinear trap-induced light shifts, achieving a total systematic uncertainty of $4.6\times10^{-14}$. The absolute frequency of the vibrational splitting is measured to be 31 825 183 207 592.8(5.1) Hz, enabling the dissociation energy of our molecule to be determined with record accuracy. Our results represent an important milestone in molecular spectroscopy and THz-frequency standards, and may be generalized to other neutral molecular species with applications for fundamental physics, including tests of molecular quantum electrodynamics and the search for new interactions.

Abstract:Narrow optical resonances of atoms or molecules have immense significance in various precision measurements, such as testing fundamental physics and the generation of primary frequency standards. In these studies, accurate transition centers derived from fitting the measured spectra are demanded, which critically rely on the knowledge of spectral line profiles. Here, we propose a new mechanism of Fano-like resonance induced by distant discrete levels and experimentally verify it with Doppler-free spectroscopy of vibration-rotational transitions of CO_{2}. The observed spectrum has an asymmetric profile and its amplitude increases quadratically with the probe laser power. Our results facilitate a broad range of topics based on narrow transitions.
Precision Franck-Condon spectroscopy from highly-excited vibrational states

Abstract:As per the Franck-Condon principle, absorption spectroscopy reveals changes in nuclear geometry in molecules or solids upon electronic excitation. It is often assumed these changes cannot be resolved beyond the ground vibrational wavefunction width ($\sqrt{\hbar/m\omega}$). Here, we show this resolution dramatically improves with highly-excited vibrational initial states (with occupation number $\langle n\rangle$). These states magnify changes in geometry by $2\langle n\rangle +1$, a possibly counterintuitive result given the spatial uncertainty of Fock states grows with $n$. We also discuss generalizations of this result to multimode systems. Our result is relevant to optical spectroscopy, polariton condensates, and quantum simulators ($\textit{e.g.}$, boson samplers).

Abstract:Science is founded on the benchmarking of theoretical models against experimental measurements, with the challenge that for all but the simplest systems, the calculations required for high precision become extremely challenging. $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ is the simplest stable molecule, and its internal structure is calculable to high precision from first principles. This allows tests of theoretical models and the determination of fundamental constants. However, studying $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ experimentally presents significant challenges. Standard control methods such as laser cooling, fluorescence detection and optical pumping are not applicable to $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ due to the very long lifetimes of its excited rotational and vibrational states. Here we solve this issue by using Quantum Logic Spectroscopy techniques to demonstrate full quantum control of a single $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ molecule by co-trapping it with an atomic 'helper' ion and performing quantum operations between the two ions. This enables us to perform pure quantum state preparation, coherent control and non-destructive readout, which we use to perform high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of $\mathrm{H}_2^+$. Our results pave the way for high precision spectroscopy of $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ in both the microwave and optical domains, while offering techniques which are transferable to other molecular ions.

Theoretical prerequisites for the upcoming generation of precision spectroscopic experiments

Abstract:Modern resonant spectroscopic experiments to measure transition frequencies in atoms have reached a level where a meticulous description of all aspects of the processes under study has become obligatory. The precision achieved in the experiments of A. Beyer, et al., Science 358, 79 (2017), has led to the fact that the determination of the transition frequency based on measured data is significantly refined by theoretical treatment of the observed spectral line profile. As it was predicted theoretically, a great impact of effects arising beyond the resonance approximation was found experimentally. These findings marked the beginning of the upcoming epoch in the resonant atomic spectroscopy when many commonly understood ideas became invalid. For example, the atomic transition may be characterized by several different but equally acceptable frequencies. Furthermore, we show that the picture becomes even more complicated when the observed spectral line profile is "identified" with one of the processes - emission or absorption. Precise determination of the transition frequency requires a description of the absorption line profile inseparable from the emission process and vice versa. The theoretical aspects discussed in this work provide prerequisites for more accurate and yet simpler experiments than those reported in Science 358, 79 (2017). Implementing the new physics expected in atomic resonance spectroscopy in the near future beyond the resonance approximation is unfeasible without resolving these issues.

Polyatomic Molecules as Quantum Sensors for Fundamental Physics

Abstract:Precision measurements in molecules have advanced rapidly in recent years through developments in techniques to cool, trap, and control. The complexity of molecules makes them a challenge to study, but also offers opportunities for enhanced sensitivity to many interesting effects. Polyatomic molecules offer additional complexity compared to diatomic molecules, yet are still "simple" enough to be laser-cooled and controlled. While laser cooling molecules is still a research frontier itself, there are many proposed and ongoing experiments seeking to combine the advanced control enabled by ultracold temperatures with the intrinsic sensitivity of molecules. In this perspective, we discuss some applications where laser-cooled polyatomic molecules may offer advantages for precision measurements of fundamental physics, both within and beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:Precision spectroscopy has been the driving force for progress of our physical understanding and still is a promising tool for the investigation of new physics. Molecules offer transitions which allow tests that are not possible in atomic systems. However, usually precision spectroscopy of molecules is challenging due to the lack of cycling transitions for state preparation and state detection. For molecular ions, this obstacle can be overcome by quantum logic spectroscopy, where dissipation for state preparation and detection is provided by a co-trapped atomic ion exploiting the shared eigenstates of motion. Here, we propose a full quantum logic spectroscopy scheme for molecular oxygen ions and theoretically investigate the feasibility of quantum logic-assisted state detection and preparation. Furthermore, we provide coupling rates for a direct single-photon quadrupole excitation of a vibrational overtone transition that can serve as a sensitive reference for tests of a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio.

Abstract:Accurate experimental values for the vibrational ground tone or fundamental vibrational energy splitting of H$_2$, HD, and D$_2$ are presented. Absolute accuracies of $2\times10^{-4}$ cm$^{-1}$ are obtained from Doppler-free laser spectroscopy applied in a collisionless environment. The vibrational splitting frequencies are derived from the combination difference between separate electronic excitations from the $X^{1}\Sigma_{g}^{+}, v=0, J$ and $v=1, J$ vibrational states to a common $EF^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{g}, v=0, J$ state. The present work on rotational quantum states $J=1,2$ extends the results reported by Dickenson et al. on $J=0$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 193601]. The experimental procedures leading to this high accuracy are discussed in detail. A comparison is made with full \emph{ab initio} calculations encompassing Born-Oppenheimer energies, adiabatic and non-adiabatic corrections, as well as relativistic corrections and QED-contributions. The present agreement between the experimental results and the calculations provides a stringent test on the application of quantum electrodynamics in molecules. Furthermore, the combined experimental-theoretical uncertainty can be interpreted to provide bounds to new interactions beyond the Standard Model of Physics or fifth forces between hadrons.

Abstract:We report pump-probe measurements of a hydrogen molecule ( H2 ) in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope coupled to ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses. The coherent oscillation of the THz-induced dc tunneling current at a frequency of ∼0.5 THz fingerprints the absorption by H2 as a two-level system (TLS). Two components of the oscillatory signal are observed and point to both photon and field aspects of the THz pulses. A few loosely bound states with similar energies for the upper state of the TLS are evidenced by the coherent revival of oscillatory signal. Furthermore, the comparison of spectroscopic features of H2 with different tips provides an understanding of the TLS for H2 . https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.076903 © 2024 American Physical Society

New interpretation of the atomic spectra and other quantum phenomena: A mixed mechanism of classical $LC$ circuits and quantum wave-particle duality

Abstract:We study the energy conversion laws of the macroscopic harmonic $LC $ oscillator, the electromagnetic wave (photon) and the hydrogen atom. As our analysis indicates that the energies of these apparently different systems obey exactly the same energy conversion law. Based on our results and the wave-particle duality of electron, we find that the atom in fact is a natural microscopic $LC$ oscillator. In the framework of classical electromagnetic field theory we analytically obtain, for the hydrogen atom, the quantized electron orbit radius. Without the adaptation of any other fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, we present a reasonable explanation of the polarization of photon, the Zeeman effect, Selection rules and Pauli exclusion principle. Particularly, it is found that a pairing Pauli electron can move closely and steadily in a DNA-like double helical electron orbit. Our results also reveal an essential connection between electron spin and the intrinsic helical movement of electron and indicate that the spin itself is the effect of quantum confinement. In addition, a possible physical mechanism of superconductivity and the deeper physical understandings of the electron mass, zero point energy, and the hardness property of electron are also provided. Finally, we show analytically that the Dirac's quantization of magnetic monopole is merely a special handed electron at absolute zero-temperature, which strongly suggests that any efforts to seek for the magneticmonopole in real space will be entirely in vain. Furthermore, it appears that the electron's spin and the magnetic monopole are actually two different concepts for one possible physical phenomenon.

Abstract:The Rydberg states of H2 have been a continuing subject of intensive study by various research groups.[l-4] However, understanding of the high lying electronic states of this molecule has been inhibited by the lack of spectroscopic data in the region < 75 nm. Experimental studies have been difficult because spectroscopic features are generally buried under an intense absorption or photoionization continuum.[5] Intense, high-resolution excitation sources are not easily available. Recent developments on tun-able, narrowband, coherent XUV sources [6] provide new means of studying the spectroscopy in this region with high resolution (± .0005 nm). We have applied the technique of stepwise two-photon excitation to study photoionization of H2 in a molecular beam using the two lowest excited states of H2 as the intermediate level. This excitation, coupled with the detection of background-free H- ions has enabled us to uncover, for the first time, spectroscopic features that are difficult to observe in positive ion detection.[7] These features have been successfully assigned to new Rydberg series converging to the high vibrations of the H2 + ground electronic state.
Revealing Intramolecular Isotope Effects with Chemical-Bond Precision

Abstract:Isotope substitution of a molecule not only changes its vibrational frequencies but also changes its vibrational distributions in real-space. Quantitatively measuring the isotope effects inside a polyatomic molecule requires both energy and spatial resolutions at the single-bond level, which has been a long-lasting challenge in macroscopic techniques. By achieving ångström resolution in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), we record the corresponding local vibrational modes of pentacene and its fully deuterated form, enabling us to identify and measure the isotope effect of each vibrational mode. The measured frequency ratio νH/νD varies from 1.02 to 1.33 in different vibrational modes, indicating different isotopic contributions of H/D atoms, which can be distinguished from TERS maps in real-space and well described by the potential energy distribution simulations. Our study demonstrates that TERS can serve as a non-destructive and highly sensitive methodology for isotope detection and recognition with chemical-bond precision.
