Abstract:The seasonal amplitude of temperature (SAT) decreases due to non‐uniform seasonal warming, which exerts critical impacts on ecosystem functions and services. Previous studies attributed the SAT decrease to changed seasonal budget of atmospheric radiative forcing (RAD), however, potential impacts of vegetation physiological response to CO 2 (PHY) on SAT are largely underexplored. Here, we examine the role of PHY in modulating SAT using Earth system model simulations. Globally, PHY continuously increases SAT, offsetting about 55% of the RAD‐driven SAT reductions under quadrupled CO 2 . The PHY‐induced SAT enhancement is particularly pronounced in the northern mid‐to‐high latitudes. Such enhancement is driven directly by stomatal closure‐induced evapotranspiration reduction that amplifies warming, and indirectly by suppressing cloud formation that increases downward shortwave radiation. Our results highlight the critical role of vegetation in mediating temperature seasonality and the necessity for a full understanding of PHY feedback when evaluating the benefits of terrestrial ecosystems in mitigating climate change.
Non-uniform Seasonal Warming Regulates Vegetation Greening and Atmospheric CO 2 Amplification over Northern Lands

Abstract:The enhanced vegetation growth by climate warming plays a pivotal role in amplifying the seasonal cycle of atmospheric CO2 at northern lands (>50° N) since 1960s. However, the correlation between vegetation growth, temperature and seasonal amplitude of atmospheric CO2 concentration have become elusive with the slowed increasing trend of vegetation growth and weakened temperature control on CO2 uptake since late 1990s. Here, based on in situ atmospheric CO2 concentration records from the Barrow observatory site, we found a slowdown in the increasing trend of the atmospheric CO2 amplitude from 1990s to mid-2000s. This phenomenon was associated with the paused decrease in the minimum CO2 concentration ([CO2]min), which was significantly correlated with the slowdown of vegetation greening and growing-season length extension. We then showed that both the vegetation greenness and growing-season length were positively correlated with spring but not autumn temperature over the northern lands. Furthermore, such asymmetric dependences of vegetation growth upon spring and autumn temperature cannot be captured by the state-of-art terrestrial biosphere models. These findings indicate that the responses of vegetation growth to spring and autumn warming are asymmetric, and highlight the need of improving autumn phenology in the models for predicting seasonal cycle of atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Abstract:Abstract Global warming is increasing due to the ongoing rise in atmospheric greenhouse gases, and has the potential to threaten humans and ecosystems severely. Carbon dioxide, the primary rising greenhouse gas, also enhances vegetation carbon uptake, partially offsetting emissions. The vegetation physiological response to rising carbon dioxide, through partial stomatal closure and leaf area increase, can also amplify global warming, yet this is rarely accounted for in climate mitigation assessments. Using six Earth System Models, we show that vegetation physiological response consistently amplifies warming as carbon dioxide rises, primarily due to stomatal closure-induced evapotranspiration reductions. Importantly, such warming partially offsets cooling through enhanced carbon storage. We also find a stronger warming with higher leaf area and less warming with lower leaf area. Our study shows that the vegetation physiological response to elevated carbon dioxide influences local climate, which may reduce the extent of expected climate benefits offered by terrestrial ecosystems.
Vegetation Response to Rising CO2 Amplifies Contrasts in Water Resources Between Global Wet and Dry Land Areas

Abstract:Rising atmospheric CO 2 impacts on vegetation physiological processes can alter land feedbacks on precipitation and water resources, but understanding of regional differences in these changes is uncertain. We investigate the impact of rising CO 2 on land water resources for different wetness levels using four Earth system models. We find an overall tendency of runoff to increase across all wetness levels. However, runoff increases in wet regions are much larger than those in dry regions, especially in wet seasons. This substantial amplification of contrasts between wet and dry regions increases at 3% per 100 ppm increase in CO 2 relative to the historical period, reaching 18% for a quadrupling of CO 2 , quantified by a new wetting contrast index. Physiological effects suppress evapotranspiration more in wet than dry regions, which has a larger contribution than radiative forcing to the amplification of runoff contrast, reshaping the spatial distribution of future land water resources.

Constraints To Vegetation Growth Reduced By Region-Specific Changes In Seasonal Climate

Abstract:We qualitatively and quantitatively assessed the factors related to vegetation growth using Earth system models and corroborated the results with historical climate observations. The Earth system models showed a systematic greening by the late 21st century, including increases of up to 100% in Gross Primary Production (GPP) and 60% in Leaf Area Index (LAI). A subset of models revealed that the radiative effects of CO2 largely control changes in climate, but that the CO2 fertilization effect dominates the greening. The ensemble of Earth system model experiments revealed that the feedback of surface temperature contributed to 17% of GPP increase in temperature-limited regions, and radiation increase accounted for a 7% increase of GPP in radiation-limited areas. These effects are corroborated by historical observations. For example, observations confirm that cloud cover has decreased over most land areas in the last three decades, consistent with a CO2-induced reduction in transpiration. Our results suggest that vegetation may thrive in the starkly different climate expected over the coming decades, but only if plants harvest the sort of hypothesized physiological benefits of higher CO2 depicted by current Earth system models.

Abstract:Increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO(2) decrease stomatal conductance of plants and thus suppress canopy transpiration. The climate response to this CO(2)-physiological forcing is investigated using the Community Atmosphere Model version 3.1 coupled to Community Land Model version 3.0. In response to the physiological effect of doubling CO(2), simulations show a decrease in canopy transpiration of 8%, a mean warming of 0.1K over the land surface, and negligible changes in the hydrological cycle. These climate responses are much smaller than what were found in previous modeling studies. This is largely a result of unrealistic partitioning of evapotranspiration in our model control simulation with a greatly underestimated contribution from canopy transpiration and overestimated contributions from canopy and soil evaporation. This study highlights the importance of a realistic simulation of the hydrological cycle, especially the individual components of evapotranspiration, in reducing the uncertainty in our estimation of climatic response to CO(2)-physiological forcing. Influence of Vegetation Growth on the Enhanced Seasonality of Atmospheric CO2

Abstract:The amplitude of seasonal fluctuations in concentrations of atmospheric CO2 has increased over recent decades. Model‐based studies suggest that this increase could be the result of enhanced vegetation growth during the growing season and ecosystem respiration in the nongrowing season. Here we investigated seasonal changes in vegetation growth derived from satellite‐based observations of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 1982 to 2013. We found notable agreement between these observations and interannual variations of seasonality of global atmospheric CO2, suggesting that terrestrial vegetation growth is the dominant driver of the seasonality of the concentration of atmospheric CO2. Specifically, we found that the trend in seasonality of global vegetation growth was not continuous from 1982 to 2013 and that it increased substantially after 2001. In response, the trend of seasonality in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 stalled from 1982 to 2000 but increased from 2001 onward. This 2001 change in the growth seasonality trend was largely a result of decreased NDVI during spring and winter. CMIP5 models were unable to reproduce this observed seasonality. Our results showed the dominant role played by vegetation growth in determining atmospheric CO2 seasonality, highlighting the need to improve representation of vegetation growth in current terrestrial models to adequately indicate seasonal changes in the concentration of atmospheric CO2.
Metabolic and Phenological Response of Vegetation to Temperature Gradient: Evidence Derived from AVHRR Data

Abstract:We studied the metabolic and phenological response of vegetation to the change in temperature using the latitudinal gradient to represent the temperature gradient. By comparing the seasonal curves of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of northern latitudinal zones, we found that the annual peak value of the zonal NDVI average (MNDVI) increases as the latitude decreases from 75–56°N, with the greatest peak value occurring at 56°N. In the same latitude range, the arriving time (TNDVI) of the peak as measured by the Julian days when the MNDVI is reached decreases with latitude. These results imply that temperature increase in the high latitudes of the northern Hemisphere may increase the MNDVI and decrease TNDVI for the vegetation above 56°N, and therefore lower the trough of the seasonal curve of the atmospheric CO2 and make the trough arrive earlier. Because of the matching of spatial distribution of warming from 1965 to 1995 with the vegetation zone where the vegetation is sensitive to temperature, we conclude that the warming may have caused the metabolic enhancement and phenological shift for the vegetation in the high latitude region and which in turn causes the increase of seasonal amplitude of CO2 and its phase shift.
Transition from positive to negative indirect CO2 effects on the vegetation carbon uptake

Abstract:Abstract Although elevated atmospheric CO 2 concentration (eCO 2 ) has substantial indirect effects on vegetation carbon uptake via associated climate change, their dynamics remain unclear. Here we investigate how the impacts of eCO 2 -driven climate change on growing-season gross primary production have changed globally during 1982–2014, using satellite observations and Earth system models, and evaluate their evolution until the year 2100. We show that the initial positive effect of eCO 2 -induced climate change on vegetation carbon uptake has declined recently, shifting to negative in the early 21st century. Such emerging pattern appears prominent in high latitudes and occurs in combination with a decrease of direct CO 2 physiological effect, ultimately resulting in a sharp reduction of the current growth benefits induced by climate warming and CO 2 fertilization. Such weakening of the indirect CO 2 effect can be partially attributed to the widespread land drying, and it is expected to be further exacerbated under global warming.

Abstract:Water availability plays a critical role in shaping terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in low- and mid-latitude regions. The sensitivity of vegetation growth to precipitation strongly regulates global vegetation dynamics and their responses to drought, yet sensitivity changes in response to climate change remain poorly understood. Here we use long-term satellite observations combined with a dynamic statistical learning approach to examine changes in the sensitivity of vegetation greenness to precipitation over the past four decades. We observe a robust increase in precipitation sensitivity (0.624% yr-1) for drylands, and a decrease (-0.618% yr-1) for wet regions. Using model simulations, we show that the contrasting trends between dry and wet regions are caused by elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2). eCO2 universally decreases the precipitation sensitivity by reducing leaf-level transpiration, particularly in wet regions. However, in drylands, this leaf-level transpiration reduction is overridden at the canopy scale by a large proportional increase in leaf area. The increased sensitivity for global drylands implies a potential decrease in ecosystem stability and greater impacts of droughts in these vulnerable ecosystems under continued global change.
Importance Of Carbon Dioxide Physiological Forcing To Future Climate Change

Abstract:An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) concentration influences climate both directly through its radiative effect (i.e., trapping longwave radiation) and indirectly through its physiological effect (i.e., reducing transpiration of land plants). Here we compare the climate response to radiative and physiological effects of increased CO(2) using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) coupled Community Land and Community Atmosphere Model. In response to a doubling of CO(2), the radiative effect of CO(2) causes mean surface air temperature over land to increase by 2.86 +/- 0.02 K (+/-1 standard error), whereas the physiological effects of CO(2) on land plants alone causes air temperature over land to increase by 0.42 +/- 0.02 K. Combined, these two effects cause a land surface warming of 3.33 +/- 0.03 K. The radiative effect of doubling CO(2) increases global runoff by 5.2 +/- 0.6%, primarilyby increasing precipitation over the continents. The physiological effect increases runoff by 8.4 +/- 0.6%, primarily by diminishing evapotranspiration from the continents. Combined, these two effects cause a 14.9 +/- 0.7% increase in runoff. Relative humidity remains roughly constant in response to CO(2)-radiative forcing, whereas relative humidity over land decreases in response to CO(2)-physiological forcing as a result of reduced plant transpiration. Our study points to an emerging consensus that the physiological effects of increasing atmospheric CO(2) on land plants will increase global warming beyond that caused by the radiative effects of CO(2).

Abstract:As anthropogenic carbon emissions continue, it is important to predict how vegetation will change due to the warming climate, increasing atmospheric CO 2 , and changing precipitation patterns. Some projections show decreases in vegetation either regionally in the tropics (e.g. Falloon et al., 2012; Port et al., 2012) or globally (e.g. Bastin et al., 2019) due to high temperatures and drying, and there is large uncertainty surrounding the response of global vegetation to climate change (Arora et al., 2020; Friedlingstein et al., 2006; Walker et al., 2020). Here we use simulations with the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) with dynamic vegetation to explore how increasing CO 2 may affect vegetation and, through feedbacks, the climate. We find that globally, warming only decreases vegetation, but when we include the effects of CO 2 on plant physiology, vegetated area increases by ∼23% relative to the preindustrial simulation. This greening occurs even without significant increases in precipitation, as high CO 2 increases plant water use efficiency, allowing for more vegetation in arid and hot regions. Our results show that CO 2 -induced vegetation changes affect climate by amplifying high latitude warming, cooling some areas of the tropics, and shifting global precipitation patterns. Our results highlight the importance of including climate-vegetation feedbacks in Earth system modeling.

Abstract:Increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) influence climate by suppressing canopy transpiration in addition to its well- known greenhouse gas effect. The decrease in plant transpiration is due to changes in plant physiology (reduced opening of plant stomata). Here, we quantify such changes in water flux for various levels of CO2 concentrations using the National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) Community Land Model. We find that photosynthesis saturates after 800 ppmv (parts per million, by volume) in this model. However, unlike photosynthesis, canopy transpiration continues to decline at about 5.1% per 100 ppmv increase in CO2 levels. We also find that the associated reduction in latent heat flux is primarily compensated by increased sensible heat flux. The continued decline in canopy transpiration and subsequent increase in sensible heat flux at elevated CO2 levels implies that incremental warming associated with the physiological effect of CO2 will not abate at higher CO2 concentrations, indicating important consequences for the global water and carbon cycles from anthropogenic CO2 emissions.
The effect of climate change on vegetation at high latitudes of the northern Hemisphere: A functional analysis

Abstract:The metabolic and phenological response of vegetation to the change in temperature was studied by using the latitudinal gradient to represent the temperature gradient.By comparing the seasonal NDVI curves of different latitudinal zones,we found that the peak value (M NDVI ) increased as latitudes decreased from 75～56°N,with the greatest peak occurring at 56°N.In the same latitude range,the peaking time as measured by the Julian days when the M NDVI was reached decreased with latitude.These results imply that temperature increases at high latitude of the northern Hemisphere may increase the M NDVI and decrease T NDVI for the vegetation above 56°N,and therefore lower the trouph of the seasonal curve of atmospheric CO 2 and make the trouph arrive earlier.The matching of the spatial distribution of the warming from 1965 to 1995 with the temperature sensitive vegetation zone leads to the conclusion that the warming causes the metabolic enhancement and phenological shift for the vegetation in the high latitude region and which in turn causes the increase of seasonal amplitude of CO 2 and its phase shift.

Abstract:Increasing atmospheric CO2 affects photosynthesis involving directly increasing leaf carboxylation rates, stomatal closure, and climatic effects. The direct effects are generally thought to be positive leading to increased photosynthesis, while its climatic effects can be regionally positive or negative. These effects are usually considered to be independent from each other, but they are in fact coupled through interactions between land surface exchanges of gases and heat and the physical climate system. In particular, stomatal closure reduces evapotranspiration and increases sensible heat emissions from ecosystems, leading to decreased atmospheric moisture and precipitation and local warming. We use a coupled earth system model to attribute the influence of the increase in CO2 on gross primary productivity (GPP) during the period of 1930-2011. In our model, CO2 radiative effects cause climate change that has only a negligible effect on global GPP (a reduction of 0.9 +/- 2% during the last 80 years) because of opposite responses between tropical and northern biomes. On the other hand, CO2 physiological effects on GPP are both positive, by increased carboxylation rates and water use efficiency (7.1 +/- 0.48% increase), and negative, by vegetation-climate feedback reducing precipitation, as a consequence of decreased transpiration and increased sensible heat in areas without water limitation (2.7 +/- 1.76% reduction). When considering the coupled atmosphere-vegetation system, negative climate feedback on photosynthesis and plant growth due to the current level of CO2 opposes 29-38% of the gains from direct fertilization effects.
Decelerating Autumn CO2 Release with Warming Induced by Attenuated Temperature Dependence of Respiration in Northern Ecosystems

Abstract:Feedbacks from the carbon cycle in boreal and arctic ecosystems can significantly affect climate change, but the effects of climate change on the high‐latitude carbon cycle during the dormant period remain uncertain. By analyzing the long‐term atmospheric CO2 concentration record from Point Barrow in Alaska, we show that warming significantly boosts net CO2 release in autumn over the period 1974–2014. But this warming‐stimulated effect has been attenuated since 1997. This deceleration of net CO2 release with warming is ascribed to the attenuation in respiration response to temperature rather than changing relationship between temperature and productivity or changes in atmospheric transport, fossil fuel emissions, or air‐sea CO2 exchanges. The attenuated respiration response is likely due to decoupling between temperature and plant‐derived carbon inputs to soil for decomposition. Contrary to previous suggestions, warming no longer results in a higher autumn net CO2 release.
Vegetation Response to Elevated CO<sub>2</sub>Slows Down the Eastward Movement of the 100th Meridian

Abstract:The 100th meridian is a conceptual arid-humid divide that effectively bisects the continent of the United States into the humid east and arid west. Here, we examine the historical and future shifts of the 100th meridian from atmospheric, hydrologic, and agroecological perspectives. We find that the effective arid-humid divide regarding vegetation greenness and runoff has been moving toward west with a mean shift of 0.73 degrees (1982-2015) and 2.08 degrees (1961-2010), respectively, suggesting decreased agroecological and hydrologic aridity in the region. For future periods, the agroecological divide shows a persistent westward movement, whereas eastward shifts of the 100th meridian are detected from the atmospheric and hydrologic perspectives. Nevertheless, the eastward movements of the atmospheric and hydrologic divide substantially slow down when the vegetation response to elevated atmospheric CO(2)is accounted for. This finding demonstrates that CO(2)fertilization on vegetation could largely alleviate the warming-induced drying tendency around the 100th meridian region.

Abstract:Anthropogenic CO emissions are expected to significantly impact climate patterns, including extreme heat events. The influence of plants on land-atmosphere water and energy exchanges plays a crucial role in shaping these heat extremes. In this study, we employed a suite of CMIP6 earth system models (ESMs) to differentiate between the effects of radiative forcing and vegetation forcing under elevated CO background on extreme heat and precipitation events in China. The CO vegetation forcing may reduce transpiration and weak vegetation cooling impact, leading to a decrease in clouds and precipitation under 2 CO and 4 CO scenarios. Our findings indicate that CO -driven vegetation forcing (VEG) decreases extreme precipitation and increases dry days numbers in most humid regions of China, despite the increase in transpiration resulting from the saving of soil moisture and aboveground biomass enhancement due to CO fertilization. Additionally, VEG intensifies the frequency and intensity of future heatwaves over most of China. Both radiative forcing and vegetation forcing have a stronger impact on humid area than dry area. The findings indicate that solely considering the radiative impacts of CO is insufficient to explain the projected variations in extreme precipitation and heat changes. It suggests that CO physiological forcing might play a role in influencing the differences in projected water and energy characteristics among different climate models.

Transient and Lagged Effects of Vegetation Dynamics&#160;on the Global CO2 Growth Rate

Abstract:The land carbon cycle is fundamental in regulating atmospheric CO2 dynamics from seasonal to centennial scales. The fine equilibrium between photosynthetic gains spent in metabolic costs and/or lost in mortality underpins the contribution of terrestrial ecosystems to the global carbon cycle. Uncertainties and divergent hypotheses on the role of climate in regulating their underlying mechanisms hamper our current diagnostic and prognostic abilities despite growing evidence on ecosystem vulnerability to present and future changes in climate. However, quantitative knowledge of the contributions of different carbon cycle processes regulating carbon uptake and release still need to be improved, inflating the uncertainties in future projections of net land-atmosphere carbon exchanges. In this study, we rely on satellite-based Earth observation retrievals of above-ground biomass and vegetation primary productivity to reconstruct the land-atmosphere carbon exchange dynamics over the last two decades, through the application of a three-box model at the pixel level. Our approach confidently reproduces 60% of the observed variability in atmospheric CO2 growth rate (CGR) over throughout 1997-2019 (R = 0.78, p-val < 0.05), with a low RMSE of 1.0 PgC yr-1. We further detail CO2 release from vegetation dynamics emerging from quick turnover induced by wildfires and leaves senescence, as well as the slow turnover from plant and soil decomposition mechanisms. This allows us to differentiate between transient and lagged effects on land-to-atmosphere fluxes. The carbon release, characterized by a lag of over one year, referred to as lagged effects. Globally, the lagged responses accounted for 50% of the variability in CGR, exceeding three times the contribution of transient fluxes from live vegetation. We have yet to a change or trend in the total contributions of vegetation dynamics to CGR. Yet, the relative role of lagged effects to CGR via decomposition fluxes increased by 50%, possibly due to accelerated mortality and decomposition fluxes. As global warming imposes higher stress on vegetation while increasing temperature-mediated decomposition, our results highlight the importance of quantifying their underlying metabolic responses. Such understanding is instrumental for assessing the contribution of adaptation and mitigation measures that will shape the contribution of the terrestrial carbon cycle to dampen the effects of anthropogenic emissions on global climate.
