Abstract:TikTok has enjoyed wide popularity in the Global South. But in the summer of 2020, a titfor-tat altercation erupted over the use of the app in India against the backdrop of a border dispute between India and China. India banned TikTok, along with other Chinese mobile applications. This ban raised larger ongoing issues around user privacy, cybersecurity threats, and content regulation issues on social media platforms and telecommunications equipment around the world. In this article, we explore these issues and the wider debates on social media. To do so, we interviewed policy makers and academics, as well as representatives from India's technology industry. We also applied computational linguistic analysis to 6,388 Twitter posts about the ban by Indian users. The discourses on Twitter show intense nationalistic rhetoric and that Indian Twitter users were vocal in urging the government to ban TikTok. In-depth expert interviews suggested intense geopolitical conflicts behind the TikTok ban. We situate these findings with a broader analysis of the current geopolitics of social media platforms.

Abstract:The pandemic has changed the way we interact. The popularity of the TikTok platform, which allows creating short video content, was on the rise even before 2020 and skyrocketed during quarantine. Scientists have recognized its potential as a new means to communicate and share experience.This poster will take a look at the content posted by the most popular science communicators and at the reasons for creating content of this type.As the hashtags on the platform can be used to categorize content for algorithms and AI to understand it, we will explore science-related hashtags using information available at https://tiktokhashtags.com/ and select the most popular profiles (personal TikTok profiles of science communicators) for analysis in terms of science content, differences between video creators and presenters, and their background. The background will be analyzed from content posted on the platform (if they are openly talking about it on the platform) and comparison with content posted on other platforms. We will also look for reasons for their switching to TikTok. Our hypothesis is that shifts in social dynamics in the wake of coronavirus pandemic favoured a switch from big productions to user-friendly platforms like TikTok, and that its video-making options encourage those less experienced in video-making to create and share (science-related) content.As TikTok is an open platform with egalitarian public engagement model, it can be used to build trust in science by, say, showing the process “behind the scenes”.

Abstract:The Trump administration is engaged in an ongoing legal battle against the makers of two Chinese smartphone applications, TikTok and WeChat, over their data-collection and content moderation practices. The administration has used both the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) in an attempt to force the companies to cease U.S. operations and, in TikTok's case, to change ownership. The administration's actions have spurred multiple legal challenges, several of which are ongoing, and for now, both TikTok and WeChat remain in operation in the United States.

Abstract:TikTok's short video culture confirms the idea of algorithmic cosmopolitanism (Elkins, 2019). It involves the algorithmic promotion of local identities and place-making practices as a symbolic representation of multi-culturalism, which nonetheless is also constrained by its “flattened, one-dimensional, and consumerist approach” (Elkins, 2019: 385). At the same time, the impending TikTok ban in the US seems to suggest the rise of platform nationalism as an emerging approach to platform governance (Craig et al., 2021). This paradox between algorithmic cosmopolitanism and platform nationalism demonstrates the political nature of today's digitalization and its promised transformation of society. It raises a renewed question about how technological practices and imaginations are prone to state and economic power. In the complex entanglement between the technical and the political, we must first of all be wary of any simplistic discourses of politicization and governance.

Abstract:Children, being among the most vulnerable, require the most protection. While laws have been enacted to protect their physical well-being, many online companies have fallen short of ensuring proper usage of children's online data. The United Kingdom and the United States have taken an offensive stance on the matter by establishing their privacy policies aimed at protecting children online. The popular app TikTok has been flagged for security risks involving inadequate parental consent, unreasonable data collection, and data transference. This presentation will discuss US and UK child data privacy regulations and how companies can learn from TikTok’s failure to comply. The first privacy concerns of TikTok surfaced in 2020, resulting in several nations discussing restrictions on the app and banning it as a whole. More recently, TikTok has been facing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit in the UK regarding the breach of data protection regulations for children. These are not the only allegations the parent company, ByteDance, has faced concerning safeguarding children and their data. TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly, also owned by ByteDance, was sued in 2018 for violating the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). With more child users than ever, social media companies like TikTok are obligated to create a safe online environment.
Making Science Education More Accessible: A Case Study of TikTok's Utility as a Science Communication Tool

Abstract:Social media has revolutionized science communication, allowing for rapid dissemination of science-related content to the public. In recent years, video platforms like TikTok and Instagram have implemented recommendation algorithms that track users' interests andsuggest personalized videos. As a result, these apps have become powerful tools for public messaging, facilitating access to audiences that are naturally curious about science. In 2020 I began uploading educational science videos to TikTok which have collectively accumulated more than 48 million views and 8 million "likes." Here I present an analysis of video metrics collected from the TikTok app for a random sampling of 150 videos, searching for factors that predict the number of views a video receives and the level of viewer engagement. Videos with higher view counts were liked and shared at higher rates and sustained viewer attention for longer. Properties like hashtags, sounds, and effects did not significantly influence video views. Interestingly, videos summarizing research papers received the highest levels of engagement, potentially reflecting high demand from lay audiences who are traditionally unable to access scientific literature. Finally, I present survey data demonstrating that 84% of users report feeling more trustful of science & scientists after following this account. Although the generalizability of these findings is limited, the results offer insights into the factors that drive video performance on TikTok and how users engage with scientific content on social media. These findings may help science communicators more effectively reach wider audiences and promote science literacy in new and innovative ways.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction In April 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its intention to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes and cigars. Decades of research support the premise a menthol ban will reduce initiation and disparities in tobacco-related disease among menthol smokers. The tobacco industry opposed such a policy and worked for decades to shape public opposition. Social media discourse can inform our understanding of public opinion about the proposed ban and guide communication strategies and policy implementation. Methods This research employed a mixed-methods design to explore TikTok posts discussing the announced menthol ban. Using a TikTok web scraper to extract all content in the #mentholban hashtag (n=171), we coded for 11 themes, characterized content with descriptive statistics, and created a semantic network of co-occurring hashtags. Results We found primarily negative attitudes towards the US ban announcement and a large volume of menthol “hacks” to circumvent the bans. Our semantic network analysis revealed strong co-occurrences between #mentholban and popularity-seeking hashtags. The metadata associated with each TikTok demonstrated that most posters in #mentholban are not “influencers” in the sense of having many followers, aside from a few niche organizations with multiple posts. We found that perceived political and racial motivations shaped posters’ assessments of the menthol ban. Furthermore, we uncovered how individuals and organizational actors shaped menthol ban content on TikTok. Conclusion Our study indicates targeted marketing from alternative menthol product companies and advocacy organizations. The latter of these organizations is more likely to saturate the TikTok landscape with multiple posts and strategic hashtags. Implications This study pursued an exploration of tobacco policy discussion on TikTok, specifically related to the FDA proposed menthol ban. TikTok is newer platform and our study provides early evidence of policy discussion emerging there, including the types of accounts creating the content and their valence toward the policy.

Abstract:TikTok has skyrocketed in popularity over recent years, especially among younger audiences, thanks to its viral trends and social challenges. However, concerns have been raised about the potential of this platform to promote and amplify online harmful and dangerous content. Leveraging the official TikTok Research API and collecting a longitudinal dataset of 1.5M videos shared in the US over a period of 3 years, our study analyzes the presence of videos promoting conspiracy theories, providing a lower-bound estimate of their prevalence (approximately 0.1% of all videos) and assessing the effects of the new Creator Program, which provides new ways for creators to monetize, on the supply of conspiratorial content. We evaluate the capabilities of state-of-the-art open Large Language Models to identify conspiracy theories after extracting audio transcriptions of videos, finding that they can detect harmful content with high precision but with overall performance comparable to fine-tuned traditional language models such as RoBERTa. Our findings are instrumental for content moderation strategies that aim to understand and mitigate the spread of harmful content on rapidly evolving social media platforms like TikTok.

Abstract:The article outlines the increasing role of short video platforms such as TikTok for science communication. Based on a content and multimodal video analysis, the study provides information on how TikTok is used by different actors for science communication and identifies three different video formats (talking-head, vlog, and animated videos). Guided interviews with scientists who actively use the platform for science communication show the potential and challenges of TikTok for self-mediated science communication. The article concludes that adapting to TikTok's platform characteristics is crucial for the success of science communication.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives TikTok is a popular social media platform, especially among those who are 13–24 years of age. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe the content of COVID-19 material on TikTok. Methods A total of 100 videos posted under the hashtag #Coronavirus were included in this study along with all (n=17) posts uploaded by the World Health Organization (WHO). Results Overall, these videos were viewed 1,194,081,700 times. The most commonly cited topics included anxiety (14.5%) with more than 190.6 million views and quarantine (10.3%) with 106.6 million views. Fewer than 10% of videos mentioned how the virus is transmitted, symptoms, and prevention. WHO videos more often focused on viral transmission and symptoms but covered these topics in fewer than 10% of the videos. Conclusions Although research suggests that cases of COVID-19 may be less severe in those under 18 years of age, social distancing remains paramount due to the possibility of transmission even in those with minimal or no symptoms. For young adults in particular, the WHO suggests staying connected through social media and making every attempt to stay positive. TikTok has the potential, not only to convey important health information, but to address these aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic as well.

Abstract:TikTok is a social media platform that has gained immense popularity over the last few years, particularly among younger demographics, due to the viral trends and challenges shared worldwide. The recent release of a free Research API opens the door to collecting data on posted videos, associated comments, and user activities. Our study focuses on evaluating the reliability of the results returned by the Research API, by collecting and analyzing a random sample of TikTok videos posted in a span of 6 years. Our preliminary results are instrumental for future research that aims to study the platform, highlighting caveats on the geographical distribution of videos and on the global prevalence of viral and conspiratorial hashtags.

TikTok as a Source of Health Information and Misinformation for Young Women in the United States: Survey Study

Abstract:Background: TikTok is one of the most-used and fastest-growing social media platforms in the world, and recent reports indicate that it has become an increasingly popular source of news and information in the United States. These trends have important implications for public health because an abundance of health information exists on the platform. Women are among the largest group of TikTok users in the United States and may be especially affected by the dissemination of health information on TikTok. Prior research has shown that women are not only more likely to look for information on the internet but are also more likely to have their health-related behaviors and perceptions affected by their involvement with social media. Objective: We conducted a survey of young women in the United States to better understand their use of TikTok for health information as well as their perceptions of TikTok's health information and health communication sources. Methods: A web-based survey of US women aged 18 to 29 years (N=1172) was conducted in April-May 2023. The sample was recruited from a Qualtrics research panel and 2 public universities in the United States. Results: The results indicate that the majority of young women in the United States who have used TikTok have obtained health information from the platform either intentionally (672/1026, 65.5%) or unintentionally (948/1026, 92.4%). Age (959/1026, 93.47%; r=0.30; P<.001), education (959/1026, 93.47%; ρ=0.10; P=.001), and TikTok intensity (ie, participants' emotional connectedness to TikTok and TikTok's integration into their daily lives; 959/1026, 93.47%; r=0.32; P<.001) were positively correlated with overall credibility perceptions of the health information. Nearly the entire sample reported that they think that misinformation is prevalent on TikTok to at least some extent (1007/1026, 98.15%), but a third-person effect was found because the young women reported that they believe that other people are more susceptible to health misinformation on TikTok than they personally are (t1025=21.16; P<.001). Both health professionals and general users were common sources of health information on TikTok: 93.08% (955/1026) of the participants indicated that they had obtained health information from a health professional, and 93.86% (963/1026) indicated that they had obtained health information from a general user. The respondents showed greater preference for health information from health professionals (vs general users; t1025=23.75; P<.001); the respondents also reported obtaining health information from health professionals more often than from general users (t1025=8.13; P<.001), and they were more likely to act on health information from health professionals (vs general users; t1025=12.74; P<.001). Conclusions: The findings suggest that health professionals and health communication scholars need to proactively consider using TikTok as a platform for disseminating health information to young women because young women are obtaining health information from TikTok and prefer information from health professionals.

Abstract:This article examines the rise of TikTok in three aspects: globalization strategies, data and content policies, and geopolitical implications. Instead of focusing on app features and uses within the platform proper, we situate and critically analyse TikTok as a platform business in a global media policy and governance context. We first unpack TikTok’s platformization process, tracing how TikTok gradually diversifies its business models and platform affordances to serve multisided markets. To understand TikTok’s platform governance, we systematically analyse and compare its data and content policies for different regions. Crucial to its global expansion, we then look at TikTok’s lobbying efforts to maintain government relations and corporate responses after facing multiple regulatory probing by various national governments. TikTok’s case epitomizes problems and challenges faced by a slew of globalizing Chinese digital platforms in increasingly contested geopolitics that cut across the chasms and fault lines between the rise of China and India as emergent powers in the US-dominated global platform ecosystem.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic practice of social distancing has led to an increased usage of social media, which has highlighted the importance and potency of social media for effective science communication. As a result, it is now just as crucial to educate and acquire the skills necessary to use social media for science communication in an accurate and efficient manner. In response, we created a task that models and develops 21st century science communication abilities using the social media site TikTok. During the COVID-19 outbreak, TikTok, a platform for sharing short videos, had a dramatic rise in popularity. We demonstrated efficient social media science communication strategies by employing the condensed, targeted video format of TikTok to instruct students in fundamental science ideas and lab procedures. Students were then given the task of practicing excellent science communication at the conclusion of the semester by making their own educational and entertaining TikToks about the research projects that their teams had been working on. Here, we provide our methodology, a number of TikTok best practices, and sample videos made throughout the process for science communication education that are both effective and interesting.

Abstract:As TikTok exploded in popularity following the initial lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, use from individual users skyrocketed. During this time, political content became largely ubiquitous across the app. Politics play out daily on TikTok, as individuals craft messages within the technological affordances and sociocultural dynamics of the app. This study expands on research regarding civic engagement in digital public spheres by examining and describing how TikTok shapes political expression and discourse through three technological affordances on the app: the Green Screen, the Stitch, and the Duet. While these affordances are often hailed as features that bolster user creativity through increased possible interactions, our analysis found these increased possible interactions to be highly specific, and also limited in conjunction with politics. On political TikTok, these affordances function more as political commentary than conversation, lending to an overall volatile environment.
