Abstract:Bias control of Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator is important for the performance of radio-over-fiber links. In this paper, a digital controller has been developed in order to keep the bias point at any target value, making the modulator exhibiting great long-term stability. Furthermore, this method was applied in radio-over-fiber links to optimize their performance, such as RF gain, noise figure, and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and keep them stably operate in a long time.

Abstract:In high-capacity coherent transmission applications such as 400 Gb/s and beyond, silicon inphase and quadrature modulators (SIQMs) are widely used as a coherent transmitter assembly. The bias points of the SIQM deviate the optimum points because of environmental change. Consequently, auto bias control (ABC) is an essential technique to stabilize the bias points of the SIQM. In this paper, we described a novel method to achieve the bias point high-precision control for SIQMs. First, a pair of the differential power dithers are applied to the dual-arms of the channels I and Q, which can compose a push-pull bias locking mode. By this way, the bias error of the channel P induced by the channels I and Q can be eliminated compared with the conventional single-arm ABC method. Then an orthogonal integration operation is used to extract the dither frequency component of the output signal of the SIQM, and the intersections of the orthogonal-integral curves corresponding to the bias points of the channels I, Q, and P are the optimum bias thermal-power. The simulation and experimental results show that our method exhibits a good performance for locking the optimum thermal-power of the SIQM, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty caused by the proposed method for a 512-Gb/s optical signal transmission with a dual-polarization 16-quadrature amplitude modulation format can be neglected in our experiment.

Abstract:Recently, the high-speed silicon optical modulator has played a greater and greater role in optic fiber communication. Due to the silicon material nonlinear electro-optic effect, the quadrature (Quad) bias point of the modulator is difficult to be locked precisely. In this paper, a novel automatic bias control (ABC) method for four-level pulse amplitude modulation format silicon modulator is presented. First, a sinusoidal dither signal is applied to the modulator DC bias, and the normalized output optical signal function, which is modulated by the dither signal, is obtained. Then, a pair of orthogonal reference functions is created, whose numerical size is equal to the absolute value of sinusoidal and cosine functions so that the frequency is the same as the dither signal. Through the cross-correlation integral operation between the normalized and reference functions above, we find that the zero point of the above integral operation is the best Quad bias point through numerical simulation and experiment. The phase accuracy error of ABC is lower than 2 deg, and it satisfies the business specifications of a high-speed silicon optical modulator.

Abstract:To resist the bias drift of the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), we proposed and demonstrated a dither-free bias control method based on the bidirectional proportion integration differentiation (Bi-PID) algorithm. We theoretically analyzed the characteristics of time and frequency signals and made the bias point stable at the null point and quadrature point through optical power feedback and harmonic component feedback, respectively. 726.6 km transmission experiments were conducted to measure the effectiveness of the proposed modulator bias control (MBC) method. The results demonstrated that the stability of the time-sync system with the proposed MBC was better than that of the traditional method in the long-term measurement, whose time deviation (TDEV) was 2.8 x 10(-12)@10(4) s. The frequency stability characterized by Allan deviation (ADEV), reaching 3.1 x 10(-17)@10(4) s, outperformed traditional methods as well.

Abstract:We study the performance of automatic bias control for three bias voltages in optical quadrature phase-shift keying modulator. The interaction between multiple bias controls for two Mach-Zehnder modulators' (MZMs') bias voltages and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer's (MZI's) bias voltage is analyzed theoretically. The condition for achieving global extremum of the monitored optical power with two MZMs' bias voltages at the null transmission points is also studied by numerical simulations. The results show that the bias voltages of two MZMs can be controlled regardless of the MZI's bias voltage and can avoid the risk of trapping in local extremum if the driver signal amplitude operates in the proper range. Abstract:Bias control of Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulators( EOM) is of great importance in radio over fiber links. In order to study the impact of dither tone-based modulator bias control on radio frequency( RF) signal,the output signal component of the system was theoretically analyzed by means of spectrum analysis after it was turned into the Bessel series,a system for arbitrary bias point was designed to confirm the analysis experimentally. The results of MATLAB simulation show that when the input RF power is 18dBm,only when the amplitude of dither tone is smaller than 45mV,the suppression ratio of the second harmonic of RF signal to signal caused by dither tone can be greater than 20dB. When the input RF power is 10dBm,the amplitude should be smaller than 19mV accordingly. When the amplitude of dither tone changes,the error between the experimental data of the suppression ratio of the second harmonic of RF signal to signal caused by dither tone and the simulation results is maintained at about from 3dB to 3. 2dB. The results demonstrate that when Mach-Zehnder EOM works at linear bias-point,frequency components caused by dither tone can be ignored,however,when Mach-Zehnder EOM works at smallest bias-point,the impact of dither tone cannot be ignored.

Abstract:Recently, optical single sideband (SSB) based direct detection (DD) has been considered as a promising candidate for inter data center interconnects (inter-DCIs). Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is always applied to eliminate the signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI) caused by the square law-detection of a single-ended photodiode (PD) in SSB DD system. The electro-to optical (EO) conversion of the complex signal can be realized by IQ modulator (IQM). However, IQ imbalance exists at the transmitter since the in-phase and quadrature-phase ports of IQM are driven by the real and imaginary parts of the signal, respectively. In this paper, we show the theoretical analysis of the transmitter side (Tx-side) IQ imbalance includes time delay, amplitude mismatch and phase mismatch. Tx-side IQ imbalance will seriously deteriorate the system performance. To deal with the impairment caused by Tx-side IQ imbalance, a 22 real-value multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalizer is proposed and implemented, and the system with the impact of these three factors are investigated in simulation, respectively. Besides,a transmission of 180 Gbs discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-S) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal over 80-km single mode fiber (SMF) is experimentally demonstrated with bit error rate (BER) below the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 102 enabled by the proposed 2 2 MIMO equalizer.

Abstract:The bias drift effect in the packaged LiNbO3 modulator is investigated. The Bessel expansion of the dithered clock shows that the harmonic component equal to the dither frequency can be synchronously demodulated to get the bias drift and avoid the random phase difference between the clock or data and the dither signal. By using the time division control method one control system can track two modulator bias drift in 40Gb/s RZ optical transmission system because the optimum bias point changes very slowly.

Abstract:In this paper, a method to automatically control the bias voltages of LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The automatic bias control (ABC) method is based on low cost coherent detection employing 3 x 3 optical coupler, which enhances the dither detection sensitivity. By minimizing the monitored dither frequency components which represents the residual carrier component in the optical signal, the modulator biases are optimized. A 0-pi/2 square-wave phase modulation is introduced to mitigate the detection fluctuation induced by the imbalance of 3 x 3 coupler and improve the monitoring accuracy. Experiments show that the proposed method is universal for different modulation formats. High bias control precision is achieved for inner in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) branches and outer phase bias of optical quadrature modulator. The penalty caused by the proposed ABC is negligible for both single carrier (SC) modulation and optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation. The tolerance to temperature disturbance is also demonstrated.

Abstract:As one of the core devices for an electro-optic analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator plays an important role, and the output stability of the MZ modulator has a decisive influence on the conversion accuracy of the ADC. This paper proposed a pilot tone-based method to stabilize the bias point of the modulator. This method could obtain the corresponding control voltage of the MZ modulator by adding a KHz-level dither tone to the bias end of the modulator and calculating the ratio of the first and second harmonic components. The experimental results showed that the output optical power of the modulator was stable at 3.2 dB when the bias point of the modulator was set at the orthogonal point. Moreover, the fluctuation range was not more than 0.15 dB, the first harmonic of the output signal was stable at 50.5 dB, and the fluctuation range was not more than 0.6 dB. The proposed bias controller based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and digital signal processing (DSP) can stabilize the modulator bias point at the orthogonal point and with a relatively high locking accuracy.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a modulation-format-transparent dual-polarization (DP) transmitter (Tx) in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance estimation scheme based on maximum likelihood independent component analysis (ML-ICA). The proposed scheme can separate Tx IQ imbalance from polarization crosstalk and phase noise and achieve accurate IQ imbalance estimation without training data and the information of modulation format. Firstly, the complex-ML-ICA is used to implement format-transparent polarization de-multiplexing to remove polarization crosstalk; then the real-ML-ICA is employed to estimate inverse IQ mixing matrix and compensate Tx IQ imbalance/phase noise on each polarization channel. Inverse IQ mixing matrix contains the information of phase noise and Tx IQ imbalance; Finally, Tx IQ imbalance is derived from the inverse matrix by analytic method. The impact of Tx IQ imbalance on polarization demultiplexing and carrier phase recovery (CPE) is investigated by numerical simulation from three aspects of Jones space, Stokes space, and Kurtosis. The simulation results demonstrate the proposed scheme has strong robustness to phase noise, quantization noise, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. The proposed ML-ICA algorithm is verified experimentally in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK)/8 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)/16QAM/64QAM systems. The experimental results show the scheme can accurately estimate Tx IQ imbalance within wide range in a format transparent manner.

Abstract:Optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation is widely used in radio-over-fiber (RoF) system, nanophotonic phase noise filter, frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidar and so on. We demonstrate a silicon dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) with tunable optical power splitting ratio to generate OSSB signal with ultra-high sideband suppression ratio (SSR). To mitigate the SSR deterioration caused by the limited extinction ratios (ER) of the two sub-MZMs due to the process tolerance and the imbalance in their RF driving powers in practical RF links, we adjust the distribution of the incident optical power between the two sub-MZMs with a $1\times 2$ switch. With this technique, the SSR measured at 20 GHz is better than 39.1 dB. A theoretical analysis is also provided to explain how the unwanted sideband is suppressed by adjusting the optical power splitting ratio.

Abstract:To scale up the capacity and spectrum efficiency in optical transmission systems, high-order quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM), has raised a lot of research attention. Recently, optical 32 or 36QAM has been deployed to realize high spectrum-efficient Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing transmission with spectral efficiency of up to 8.37b/s/Hz. Usually optical 32 or 36QAM is synthesized using a single in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator driven by 6-level driving electronics, which is referred to as “electrical” approach here. Although the single IQ modulator solution has a simple optical hardware, it requires sophisticated technique for preparing superior-quality 6-level electronics by either combining three binary electrical signals or deploying high-speed digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The operation symbol-rate is restricted by the DACs resolution, linearity of driver amplifiers or bandwidth of electrical components. On the other hand, the tandem-modulator approach, a serial combination of IQ modulators has been utilized for synthesizing various multilevel optical signals such as 8QAM and 16QAM, where only binary electronics are deployed to drive each modulator. If extending this scheme to generate higher-order QAM, we can also benefit from the reduced complexity in driving electronics. Instead of preparing superior-quality 6-level electronics for generating 36QAM, just binary and 3-level electronics are required. In contrast to the “electrical” approach, the proposed scheme provides an alternative approach to synthesize high-order QAM with simplified driving electronics.

Abstract:We demonstrate a single chip silicon-based optical single sideband (OSSB) modulator which is composed of a branch line coupler (BLC) and a silicon dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM). Benefit from the powerful tool of optical domain compensation we propose, the constrains such as power imbalance and phase offset of BLC are eliminated. As a result, we realize a fully functional OSSB chip to implement full carrier OSSB (FC-OSSB) and suppressed carrier OSSB (SC-OSSB) modulations. The maximum sideband suppression ratio (SSR) of 35 dB is derived at 21 GHz.

Abstract:We propose a modified minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation scheme by applying the imbalanced bias on the in-phase and quadrature components of a MZM-based MSK modulator. This scheme enables constant envelope and continuous temporal phase shift of 100 Gb/s optical MSK signal by driving the MZMs with traditional sinusoidal signal instead of triangle signal. The principle of generating the optical MSK signal by this imbalanced scheme is presented. Theoretical analysis is given to modulated spectra, BER performance, residual dispersion tolerance and SPM tolerance. It is demonstrated that compared to the existing solutions the proposed scheme is able to decrease 2 dB receiver power penalty and improve SPM tolerance by 2 dB. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
