Abstract:We use large-scale simulations to investigate the dynamic fracture of silica and sodium-silicate glasses under uniaxial tension. The stress-strain curves demonstrate that silica glass is brittle whereas the glasses rich in Na show pronounced ductility. A strong composition dependence is also seen in the crack velocity which is on the order of 1800 m/s for glasses with low Na concentration and decreases to 700 m/s if the concentration is high. We find that during the fracture of Na-rich glasses very irregular cavities as large as 3-4 nm form ahead of the crack front, indicating the presence of nanoductility in these glasses. Before fracture occurs, the local composition, structure, and mechanical properties are heterogeneous in space and show a strong dependence on the applied strain. Further analysis of the correlations between these local properties allows to obtain a better microscopic understanding of the deformation and fracture of glasses and how the local heating close to the crack tip, up to several hundred degrees, permits the structure to relax.

Abstract:Sealing glass will inevitably generate bubbles during manufacturing processes. According to the test results of mechanical properties and micromorphology, porosity is likely to be pivotal in controlling the mechanical behaviour of glass. A multiscale finite element model of the extended finite element method (XFEM) coupled with a representative volume element (RVE) was established to elucidate the effect of bubbles on glass fracture behaviour. Combining experimental measurements and simulations, the crack initiation mechanism was explained, and the fracture regularity was described. It is found that the micron bubbles will seriously deteriorate the compressive properties of glass, but have little effect under the tensile load. The behaviour of the glass can be greatly improved by controlling the bubbles. The bubble size of smaller than 5 mu m and the inter-bubble distance of more than twice the diameter were suggested via a single bubble simulation under unidirectional stress. The findings are of great significance for understanding the influence of bubbles on the fracture behaviour of glasses.

Abstract:We perform atomistic simulations on the fracture behavior of two typical metallic glasses, one brittle (FeP) and the other ductile (CuZr), and show that brittle fracture in the FeP glass is governed by an intrinsic cavitation mechanism near crack tips in contrast to extensive shear banding in the ductile CuZr glass. We show that a high degree of atomic scale spatial fluctuations in the local properties is the main reason for the observed cavitation behavior in the brittle metallic glass. Our study corroborates with recent experimental observations of nanoscale cavity nucleation found on the brittle fracture surfaces of metallic glasses and provides important insights into the root cause of the ductile versus brittle behavior in such materials.

Abstract:The authors report the observations of periodic morphology evolution on fracture surface of a brittle metallic glassy ribbon, suggesting a wavy local stress intensity factor along the crack propagation. The authors find that the formation of nanoscale damage cavity structure is a common characteristic morphology on the fracture surfaces. On the surface of the hackle zone, these cavities assemble and generate the nanoscale swirling periodic corrugations. The elastic waves interfering with the plastic process zone on the crack front is proposed to explain such dynamic crack instability. The authors’ observations support the notion of an impinging effect of elastic waves on propagating crack front.

Abstract:We report here atomic force microscopy experiments designed to uncover the nature of failure mechanisms occuring within the process zone at the tip of a crack propagating into a silica glass specimen under stress corrosion. The crack propagates through the growth and coalescence of nanoscale damage spots. This cavitation process is shown to be the key mechanism responsible for damage spreading within the process zone. The possible origin of the nucleation of cavities, as well as the implications on the selection of both the cavity size at coalescence and the process zone extension are finally discussed.

Abstract:Recent experimental studies have revealed nanoscale cavities and periodic corrugations on the fracture surfaces of brittle metallic glasses. How such cavitation in these materials leads to brittle failure remains unclear. Here we show, using atomistic and continuum finite element simulations, that a shear band can mediate cavity nucleation and coalescence owing to plastic flow confinement caused by material softening. Abstract:Fracture mechanisms of metallic glasses are fundamentally different from that of crystalline alloys. Nano-voids formation and coalescence inside shear bands were believed to be one of the reasons causing the final failures. Although molecule dynamic simulations have successfully simulated cavitation in shear bands of brittle metallic glasses, direct experimental evidences are still rare. By carefully examining the shear bands of Pd40.5Ni40.5P19, nano-voids and their coalescence have been observed in the center-diffused region of shear bands. It is experimentally confirmed that nano-voids formation and their coalescence into large voids within shear bands is one of fracture mechanisms of metallic glasses. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:<p>Determination and conceptualization of atomic structures of metallic glasses or amorphous alloys remain a grand challenge. Structural models proposed for bulk metallic glasses are still controversial owing to experimental difficulties in directly imaging the atom positions in three-dimensional structures. With the advanced atomic-resolution imaging, here we directly observed the atomic arrangements in atomically thin metallic glassy membranes obtained by vapor deposition. The atomic packing in the amorphous membrane is shown to have a fractal characteristic, with the fractal dimension depending on the atomic density. Locally, the atomic configuration for the metallic glass membrane is composed of many types of polygons with the bonding angles concentrated on 45°–55°. The fractal atomic structure is consistent with the analysis with percolation theory, and may account for the enhanced relaxation dynamics and the easiness of glass transition as reported for the thin metallic glassy films or glassy surface.</p>

Abstract:Metallic glasses (MGs) are potential engineering materials, however their ductility is currently a limiting factor. Despite significant attempts to improve their fracture toughness, the fundamental physics of crack propagation remains poorly understood. The most concerning issue is the development of nano-corrugations (NCs), a distinctive fracture pattern found in brittle MGs. We offer a proof that NCs may be properly understood using the stress-driven cavitation process. The findings might provide insight on the genesis of dynamic fracture propagation in amorphous materials, which is a fiercely contested issue. The combination of shear and dilation strengths is shown to be critical in forecasting subsequent damage development. Finally, we apply what we have learned here to the debate over the macro and microscopic amorphous plasticity theories.

Abstract:Several experimental studies have shown that fracture surfaces in brittle metallic glasses (MGs) generally exhibit nanoscale corrugations which may be attributed to the nucleation and coalescence of nanovoids during crack propagation. Recent atomistic simulations suggest that this phenomenon is due to large spatial fluctuations in material properties in a brittle MG, which leads to void nucleation in regions of low atomic density and then catastrophic fracture through void coalescence. To explain this behavior, we propose a model of a heterogeneous solid containing a distribution of weak zones to represent a brittle MG. Plane strain continuum finite element analysis of cavitation in such an elastic-plastic solid is performed with the weak zones idealized as periodically distributed regions having lower yield strength than the background material. It is found that the presence of weak zones can significantly reduce the critical hydrostatic stress for the onset of cavitation which is controlled uniquely by the local yield properties of these zones. Also, the presence of weak zones diminishes the sensitivity of the cavitation stress to the volume fraction of a preexisting void. These results provide plausible explanations for the observations reported in recent atomistic simulations of brittle MGs. An analytical solution for a composite, incompressible elastic-plastic solid with a weak inner core is used to investigate the effect of volume fraction and yield strength of the core on the nature of cavitation bifurcation. It is shown that snap-cavitation may occur, giving rise to sudden formation of voids with finite size, which does not happen in a homogeneous plastic solid.

Abstract:Crack propagation in sputter-deposited freestanding nanocrystalline tungsten films with a thickness of 38nm was studied using an in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) tensile technique. Distinct from coarse-grained tungsten, a totally intergranular fracture mode and toughening mechanisms were identified in the nanocrystalline tungsten. The transition of the fracture mode indicates that the plasticity is improved, and the improvement may be attributed to the effect of nano-size grains and the freestanding surface, which facilitate a high percentage of grain boundaries (GB) and a weak binding force. A theoretical model of the energy release rate and the deflection angle of cracks was established to quantitatively characterize the preferred deflection angle. The model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Abstract:A tensile technique was developed and coupled with in-situ transmission electron microscopy observations to directly characterize the crack propagation mechanism in sputter-deposited, ultra-thin, freestanding nanocrystalline Ag thin films with a thickness of 60nm. The developed technique directly revealed the fracture mechanism; the thin film with nanoscale grains exhibits ductile fracture behavior, and the crack propagates through void nucleation, growth, and coalescence ahead of the crack tip. A model for the energy release rate during the propagation of nanovoids was established to quantitatively characterize the equilibrium length of the voids. Based on experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, the effects of stress distribution and energy transformation on the nucleation position, equilibrium length, and growth rate of the nanovoids are discussed.

Abstract:We have studied the low speed fracture regime for different glassy materials with variable but controlled length scales of heterogeneity in a carefully mastered surrounding atmosphere. By using optical and atomic force (AFM) microscopy techniques we tracked in real-time the crack tip propagation at the nanometer scale on a wide velocity range (1 mm/s and 0.1 nm/s and below). The influence of the heterogeneities on this velocity is presented and discussed. Our experiments revealed also -for the first time- that the crack advance proceeds through nucleation, growth and coalescence of nanometric damage cavities inside the amorphous phase, which generate large velocity fluctuations. The implications of the existence of such a nano-ductile fracture mode in glass are discussed.

A Kinship between the EGRET SNR's and Sgr A East

Abstract:Sgr A East appears to be a single, mixed morphology 10,000 year-old supernova remnant (SNR) at the Galactic Center. It also appears to belong to a class of remnants that have been observed and detected at 1720 MHz, the transition frequency of OH maser emission. However, if the EGRET source 3EG J1746-2852 conincident with the Galactic center is itself associated with this object, it would endow it with a gamma-ray luminosity almost two orders of magnitude greater than that of the other EGRET-detected SNR's. We here reconsider the viability of a pion-production mechanism as the source of the broadband emission observed from Sgr A East, and show that what connects these objects -- and ultimately also accounts for their different gamma-ray emissivity -- is the very important interaction between the expanding SNR shell and the surrounding molecular cloud environment. The singularly high gamma-ray luminosity of Sgr A East, as well as its unusually steep radio spectral index, can thereby be attributed to the high-density, strong magnetized environment in which it is located.

Abstract:Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations for a system of $10^6$ particles, the response of a dense amorphous solid to the continuous expansion of its volume is investigated. We find that the spatially uniform glassy state becomes unstable via the formation of cavities, which eventually leads to failure. By scanning through a wide range of densities and temperatures, we determine the state points at which the instability occurs and thereby provide estimates of the co-existence density of the resultant glass phase. Evidence for long-lived, inhomogeneous configurations with a negative pressure is found, where the frozen-in glass structure contains spherical cavities or a network of void space. Furthermore, we demonstrate the occurrence of hysteretic effects when the cavitated solid is compressed to regain the dense glassy state. As a result, a new glass state is obtained, the pressure of which is different from the initial one due to small density inhomogeneities that are generated by the dilation-compression cycle.
Strength of 2D Glasses Explored by Machine-Learning Force Fields

Abstract:The strengths of glasses are intricately linked to their atomic-level heterogeneity. Atomistic simulations are frequently used to investigate the statistical physics of this relationship, compensating for the limited spatiotemporal resolution in experimental studies. However, theoretical insights are limited by the complexity of glass structures and the accuracy of the interatomic potentials used in simulations. Here, we investigate the strengths and fracture mechanisms of 2D silica, with all structural units accessible to direct experimental observation. We develop a neural network force field for fracture (NN-F$^{3}$) based on the deep potential-smooth edition (DeepPot-SE) framework. Representative atomic structures across crystals, nanocrystalline, paracrystalline, and continuous random network glasses are studied. We find that the virials or bond lengths control the initialization of bond-breaking events, creating nanoscale voids in the vitreous network. However, the voids do not necessarily lead to crack propagation due to a disorder-trapping effect, which is stronger than the lattice-trapping effect in a crystalline lattice and occurs over larger length and time scales. Fracture initiation proceeds with void growth and coalescence, and advances through a bridging mechanism. The fracture patterns are shaped by subsequent trapping and cleavage steps, often guided by voids forming ahead of the crack tip. These heterogeneous processes result in atomically smooth facets in crystalline regions and rough, amorphous edges in the glassy phase. These insights into 2D crystals and glasses, both sharing SiO$_{2}$ chemistry, highlight the pivotal role of atomic-level structures in determining fracture kinetics and path selection in materials.

Abstract:Fracture morphology has insightful information related to the residual effect of fractured structural glass, which is vital in assessing the post-fracture performance of glass members. This study experimentally characterized the fracture morphology of heat-treated glass and developed a novel method of morphology reconstruction, which aims to facilitate the numerical analysis of fractured structural glass. With the development of a computer-visionbased method for transparent objects, the morphology information from fragmentation tests was extracted and systematically investigated for monolithic heat-treated glass with various thicknesses, surface compressive stresses and fracture initiation locations, which are considered as the key influencing factors of heat-treated glass fracture. The geometrical features of fragments and their spatial distribution were quantitatively analysed, identifying their correlations with glass properties. The result indicates that the distribution of fragment centroids shows greater dispersion as the tempering level increases, and the fragments tend to be smaller and more rounded. The strain energy release at fracture was also assessed by fracture patterns, showing it presents high sensitivity to the glass thickness and surface compressive stress. Subsequently, a novel approach was proposed for the stochastic reconstruction of fracture morphology, combining feature points distribution and Voronoi tessellation concept. The control parameters are determined by data from the fragmentation tests and the influence of fracture load could be properly considered. The proposed method shows satisfactory outcomes and good agreement with the experimental records, which has further potential in developing refined numerical models by considering more realistic fracture morphology of glass members.
Microstructure damage of glasses under shock wave compression

Abstract:The experimental measurements were conducted for the shock compressed glasses at the stresses below their Hugoniot elastic limit (σ HEL). It has been revealed that, in terms of the microstructure damage degree, there exist two different regions within the stressed samples: a compressed (without damage) and a fractured regions, respectively. Results of K9 and ZF1 glasses with double-layer structure sample demonstrate that the formation of the fractured region can be due to an activation and development of the primary microcracks on glass surface under shock wave compression, which is the first cause. Besides, due to the different compressibility between the matrix and the inhomogeneous phases distributed in the original glass body, numerous locally strained spots would be produced under shock wave compression. When the surface microcracks propagate to the strained spot boundaries, new cracks are generated, accompanying with crack turning and branching, which makes glass body further fracture or fragmentize.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses are a newly emerged family of melt-quenched glasses. Recently, several intriguing features, such as ultrahigh glass-forming ability and low liquid fragility, have been discovered in a number of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) that are a subset of MOFs. However, the fracture behavior of ZIF glasses has not been explored. Here we report an observation of both cracking pattern and shear bands induced by indentation in a representative melt-quenched ZIF glass, that is, ZIF-62 glass (ZnIm(1.68)bIm(0.32)). The shear banding in the ZIF glass is in strong contrast to the cracking behavior of other types of fully polymerized glasses, which do not exhibit any shear bands under indentation. We attribute this anomalous cracking behavior to the easy breakage of the coordinative bonds (Zn-N) in ZIF glasses, since these bonds are much weaker than the ionic and covalent bonds in network glasses.

Abstract:The thermal response and fracture behavior of hollow glass ,which consists of two pieces of 6 mm thickness glass plate and 6 mm air spacing ,were studied in this work .The surface temperatures of the exposed and back side of the hollow glass ,heat flux at the center of the exposed side ,the breaking time of two panes ,the glass crack morphology and the fall‐out proportion were measured and analyzed .The edge length of glass was defined as the scope of [-0 .5L ,0 .5L] ,then the first crack position of the two pieces of glass initiated in the range of [-0 .25L ,0 .25L] at the edge of the glass .Moreover ,the glass pane exposed to fire with four edges covered is the easiest mode to crack ,and the fall‐out proportion with vertical shaded is greater than that of horizontal shaded one under these experimental conditions .
