Abstract:We establish strong constraints on the kernel of the (reduced) Burau representation $\beta_4:B_4\to \text{GL}_3\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[q^{\pm 1}\right]\right)$ of the braid group $B_4$. We develop a theory to explicitly determine the entries of the Burau matrices of braids in $B_4$, and this is an important step toward demonstrating that $\beta_4$ is faithful (a longstanding question posed in the 1930s). The theory is based on a novel combinatorial interpretation of $\beta_4\left(g\right)$, in terms of the Garside normal form of $g\in B_4$ and a new product decomposition of positive braids. We develop cancellation results for words in matrix groups to show that if $\sigma$ is a generic positive braid in $B_4$ and if $t\neq 2$ is a prime number, then the leading coefficients in at least one row of the matrix $\beta_4\left(\sigma\right)$ are non-zero modulo $t$. We exploit these cancellation results to deduce that the Burau representation of $B_4$ is faithful almost everywhere.

On the Cohomology of Two Stranded Braid Varieties

Abstract:We compute the cohomologies of two strand braid varieties using the two-form present in cluster structures. We confirm these results with proof using Alexander and Poincaré duality. Further, we consider products of braid varieties and their interactions with the cohomologies.

Abstract:We show that Lawrence’s representation and linear representations of the braid groups from generic highest weight representations of Uq(sl2)$${U_{q}({\mathfrak{sl}}_2)}$$ detect the dual Garside length of braids in a simple and natural way. That is, by expressing a representation as a matrix over a Laurent polynomial ring using a certain natural basis, the span of the variable is equal to a constant multiple of the dual Garside length.

Abstract:Let N be the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 with fixed odd determinant. With Sebastian Torres, we previously found a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of N into bounded derived categories of symmetric powers of the curve and, possibly, a phantom block. In this work, we employ the theory of weaving patterns to eliminate the possibility of a phantom, completing the proof of the decomposition conjectured by Narasimhan and, independently, by Belmans, Galkin, and Mukhopadhyay.

The Hilden Double Coset Problem in Braid Groups

Abstract:In this paper we provide a solution to the double coset problem for the braid group $B_n$ modulo the Hilden subgroup $H_n.$ This result demonstrates that, as in the case of braid closures, the Link Problem for plat closures is "stably equivalent" to a solvable algebraic problem. A particularly interesting feature of the proof is that, like Garside's solutions to the Word and Conjugacy Problems, it too relies on Garside's decomposition of braids in $B_n.$

Abstract:In this work we present a natural surjective map from rigid braids in B_3 (in Garside sense) to SL_2(N). This map provides an upper and a lower bound for the dilatation factor of a pseudo-Anosov 3-strand braid. These bounds only depend on the canonical length of the classical Garside structure of B_3.

We use a method that could be used for analogue results on any arbitrary variety, and that should give stronger results than using the standard technique of Beilinson's spectral sequence.

Abstract:The space of monic squarefree polynomials has a stratification according to the multiplicities of the critical points, called the equicritical stratification. Tracking the positions of roots and critical points, there is a map from the fundamental group of a stratum into a braid group. We give a complete determination of this map. It turns out to be characterized by the geometry of the translation surface structure on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ induced by the logarithmic derivative $df/f$ of a polynomial in the stratum.

Abstract:We compute the Borel equivariant cohomology ring of the left $K$-action on a homogeneous space $G/H$, where $G$ is a connected Lie group, $H$ and $K$ are closed, connected subgroups and $2$ and the torsion primes of the Lie groups are units of the coefficient ring. As a special case, this gives the singular cohomology rings of biquotients $H \backslash G / K$. This depends on a version of the Eilenberg-Moore theorem developed in the appendix, where a novel multiplicative structure on the two-sided bar construction $\mathbf{B}(A',A,A")$ is defined, valid when $A' \leftarrow A \to A"$ is a pair of maps of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras.

Abstract:Abstract Let $$g_t$$ g t be a loop in the space of monic complex polynomials in one variable of fixed degree n . If the roots of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_1$$ B 1 on n strands. Likewise, if the critical points of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_2$$ B 2 on $$n-1$$ n - 1 strands. In this paper we study the relationship between $$B_1$$ B 1 and $$B_2$$ B 2 . Composing the polynomials $$g_t$$ g t with the argument map defines a pseudo-fibration map on the complement of the closure of $$B_1$$ B 1 in $${\mathbb {C}}\times S^1$$ C × S 1 , whose critical points lie on $$B_2$$ B 2 . We prove that for $$B_1$$ B 1 a T-homogeneous braid and $$B_2$$ B 2 the trivial braid this map can be taken to be a fibration map. In the case of homogeneous braids we present a visualization of this fact. Derived Braids of Decreasing Products and their Categories

Abstract:Derived braids have been used to classify categorical structures based on the braid underlying a braided monoidal category V. With four-strand braids underlying the composition morphisms of tensor products of categories enriched over V, equality of derived braids has been seen to correspond with the results of Joyal and Street on coherence for braided monoidal categories, namely that diagrams commute when the braids underlying the legs of the diagram are equal. Equality of derived braids can then be seen as a generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation that appears in the work of Joyal and Street. The main result is a proof that decreasing products, which are braids formed from component braids with even numbers of strands, have equivalent derived braids. Plans for future work include interpreting what categorical structures correspond to decreasing products.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the structure of braid graphs in simply-laced Coxeter systems. We prove that every reduced expression has a unique factorization as a product of so-called links, which in turn induces a decomposition of the braid graph into a box product of the braid graphs for each link factor. When the Coxeter graph has no three-cycles, we use the decomposition to prove that braid graphs are partial cubes, i.e., can be isometrically embedded into a hypercube. For a special class of links, called Fibonacci links, we prove that the corresponding braid graphs are Fibonacci cubes.

Quotients of the braid group that are extensions of the symmetric group

Abstract:We consider normal subgroups $N$ of the braid group $B_n$ such that the quotient $B_n/N$ is an extension of the symmetric group by an abelian group. We show that, if $n\geq 4$, then there are exactly 8 commensurability classes of such subgroups. We define a Specht subgroup to be a subgroup of this form that is maximal in its commensurability class. We give descriptions of the Specht subgroups in terms of winding numbers and in terms of infinite generating sets. The quotient of the pure braid group by a Specht subgroup is a module over the symmetric group. We show that the modules arising this way are closely related to Specht modules for the partitions $(n-1,1)$ and $(n-2,2)$, working over the integers. We compute the second cohomology of the symmetric group with coefficients in both of these Specht modules, working over an arbitrary commutative ring. Finally, we determine which of the extensions of the symmetric group arising from Specht subgroups are split extensions.

Abstract:It is shown that every $2$-shifted Poisson structure on a finitely generated semi-free commutative differential graded algebra $A$ defines a very explicit infinitesimal $2$-braiding on the homotopy $2$-category of the symmetric monoidal dg-category of finitely generated semi-free $A$-dg-modules. This provides a concrete realization, to first order in the deformation parameter $\hbar$, of the abstract deformation quantization results in derived algebraic geometry due to Calaque, Pantev, Toën, Vaquié and Vezzosi. Of particular interest is the case when $A$ is the Chevalley-Eilenberg algebra of a higher Lie algebra, where the braided monoidal deformations developed in this paper may be interpreted as candidates for representation categories of `higher quantum groups'.

Abstract:In 1997, Cooper-Long established the nontriviality of the kernel of the modulo 2 Burau representation for the 4-strand braid group, $B_4$. This paper extends their work by embedding the image group into a finitely presented group. As an application, we characterize the kernel as the intersection of $B_4$ with a normal closure of a finite number of elements in an HNN extension of $B_4$.

Abstract:Analysing statistical properties of the normal forms of random braids, we observe that, except for an initial and a final region whose lengths are uniformly bounded (that is, the bound is independent of the length of the braid), the distributions of the factors of the normal form of sufficiently long random braids depend neither on the position in the normal form nor on the lengths of the random braids. Moreover, when multiplying a braid on the right, the expected number of factors in its normal form that are modified, called the expected penetration distance, is uniformly bounded.We explain these observations by analysing the growth rates of two regular languages associated to normal forms of elements of Garside groups, respectively to the modification of a normal form by right multiplication.A universal bound on the expected penetration distance in a Garside group yields in particular an algorithm for computing normal forms that has linear expected running time.

Braid monodromy for a trinomial algebraic equation by means of Mellin-Barnes integral representations

Abstract:We establish a braid monodromy representation of functions satisfying an algebraic equation containing three terms (trinomial equation). We follow global analytic continuation of the roots to a trinomial algebraic equation that are expressed by Mellin-Barnes integral representations. We depict braids that arise from the monodromy around all branching points. The global braid monodromy is described in terms of rational twists of strands that yield a classical Artin braid representation of algebraic functions. As a corollary, we get a precise description of the Galois group of a trinomial algebraic equation.

Abstract:Genevois recently classified which graph braid groups on $\ge 3$ strands are word hyperbolic. In the $3$-strand case, he asked whether all such word hyperbolic groups are actually free; this reduced to checking two infinite classes of graphs: sun and pulsar graphs. We prove that $3$-strand braid groups of sun graphs are free. On the other hand, it was known to experts that $3$-strand braid groups of most pulsar graphs contain surface subgroups. We provide a simple proof of this and prove an additional structure theorem for these groups.
