Abstract:We establish strong constraints on the kernel of the (reduced) Burau representation $\beta_4:B_4\to \text{GL}_3\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[q^{\pm 1}\right]\right)$ of the braid group $B_4$. We develop a theory to explicitly determine the entries of the Burau matrices of braids in $B_4$, and this is an important step toward demonstrating that $\beta_4$ is faithful (a longstanding question posed in the 1930s). The theory is based on a novel combinatorial interpretation of $\beta_4\left(g\right)$, in terms of the Garside normal form of $g\in B_4$ and a new product decomposition of positive braids. We develop cancellation results for words in matrix groups to show that if $\sigma$ is a generic positive braid in $B_4$ and if $t\neq 2$ is a prime number, then the leading coefficients in at least one row of the matrix $\beta_4\left(\sigma\right)$ are non-zero modulo $t$. We exploit these cancellation results to deduce that the Burau representation of $B_4$ is faithful almost everywhere.

Abstract:R. Kashaev and N. Reshetikhin introduced the notion of holonomy braiding extending V. Turaev's homotopy braiding to describe the behavior of cyclic representations of the unrestricted quantum group Uq sl(2) at root of unity. In this paper, using quandles and biquandles we develop a general theory for Reshetikhin-Turaev ribbon type functor for tangles with quandle representations. This theory applies to the unrestricted quantum group Uq sl(2) and produces an invariant of links with a gauge class of quandle representations.

Abstract:Under a weight conservation condition when q is not a root of unity, Yang-Baxter relations are solved without the assumption that the upper-left triangle of each sub-block of the S matrix of the braid group representation (BGR) vanishes. A general form of BGR associated with B(n), C(n) and D(n) is obtained and shown to construct link invariants. The many-to-one correspondence between BGRs and link invariants is given.

Abstract:We study the density of the Burau representation from the perspective of a non-semisimple TQFT at a fourth root of unity. This gives a TQFT construction of Squier's Hermitian form on the Burau representation with possibly mixed signature. We prove that the image of the braid group in the space of possibly indefinite unitary representations is dense. We also argue for the potential applications of non-semisimple TQFTs toward topological quantum computation.

Abstract:Schur-Weyl duality concerns the actions of $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $S_{k}$ on tensor powers of the form $V^{\otimes k}$ for an $n$-dimensional vector space $V$. There are rich histories within representation theory, combinatorics, and statistical mechanics involving the study and use of diagram algebras, which arise through the restriction of the action of $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ to subgroups of $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$. This leads us to consider further variants of Schur-Weyl duality, with the use of variants of the tensor space $V^{\otimes k}$. Instead of taking repeated tensor products of $V$, we make use of a freest commutative bilinear operation in place of $\otimes$, and this is motivated by an associated invariance property given by the action of $S_{k}$. By then taking the centralizer algebra with respect to the action of the group of permutation matrices in $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$, this gives rise to a diagram-like algebra spanned by a new class of combinatorial objects. We construct orbit-type bases for the centralizer algebras introduced in this paper, and we apply these bases to prove a combinatorial formula for the dimensions of our centralizer algebras.

Abstract:In our preceding papers we started considering the categories of tangles with flat G-connections in their complements, where G is a simple complex algebraic group. The braiding (or the commutativity constraint) in such categories satisfies the holonomy Yang-Baxter equation and it is this property which is essential for our construction of invariants of tangles with flat G-connections in their complements. In this paper, to any pair of irreducible modules over the quantized universal enveloping algebra of gl_2 at a root of unity, we associate a solution of the holonomy Yang-Baxter equation.

Abstract:In this article, we provide a comprehensive characterization of invariants of classical Lie superalgebras from the super-analog of the Schur-Weyl duality in a unified way. We establish $\mathfrak{g}$-invariants of the tensor algebra $T(\mathfrak{g})$, the supersymmetric algebra $S(\mathfrak{g})$, and the universal enveloping algebra $\mathrm{U}(\mathfrak{g})$ of a classical Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$ corresponding to every element in centralizer algebras and their relationship under supersymmetrization. As a byproduct, we prove that the restriction on $T(\mathfrak{g})^{\mathfrak{g}}$ of the projection from $T(\mathfrak{g})$ to $\mathrm{U}(\mathfrak{g})$ is surjective, which enables us to determine the generators of the center $\mathcal{Z}(\mathfrak{g})$ except for $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{osp}_{2m|2n}$. Additionally, we present an alternative algebraic proof of the triviality of $\mathcal{Z}(\mathfrak{p}_n)$. The key ingredient involves a technique lemma related to the symmetric group and Brauer diagrams.

Abstract:We construct knot invariants categorifying the quantum knot variants for all representations of quantum groups. We show that these invariants coincide with previous invariants defined by Khovanov for sl_2 and sl_3 and by Mazorchuk-Stroppel and Sussan for sl_n. Our technique is to study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. These are the representation categories of certain finite dimensional algebras with an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the KLR algebra. When the Lie algebra under consideration is $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we show that these categories agree with certain subcategories of parabolic category O for gl_k. We also investigate the finer structure of these categories: they are standardly stratified and satisfy a double centralizer property with respect to their self-dual modules. The standard modules of the stratification play an important role as test objects for functors, as Vermas do in more classical representation theory. The existence of these representations has consequences for the structure of previously studied categorifications. It allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of Khovanov and Lauda's 2-category (that its Hom spaces have the expected dimension) in all symmetrizable types, and that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras are symmetric Frobenius. In work of Reshetikhin and Turaev, the braiding and (co)evaluation maps between representations of quantum groups are used to define polynomial knot invariants. We show that the categorifications of tensor products are related by functors categorifying these maps, which allow the construction of bigraded knot homologies whose graded Euler characteristics are the original polynomial knot invariants.

Abstract:It is a classical result in representation theory that the braid group $\mathscr{B}_\mathfrak{g}$ of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ acts on any integrable representation of $\mathfrak{g}$ via triple products of exponentials in its Chevalley generators. In this article, we show that a modification of this construction induces an action of $\mathscr{B}_\mathfrak{g}$ on the commutative subalgebra $Y_\hbar^0(\mathfrak{g})\subset Y_\hbar(\mathfrak{g})$ of the Yangian by Hopf algebra automorphisms, which gives rise to a representation of the Hecke algebra of type $\mathfrak{g}$ on a flat deformation of the Cartan subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}[t]\subset \mathfrak{g}[t]$. By dualizing, we recover a representation of $\mathscr{B}_\mathfrak{g}$ constructed in the works of Y. Tan and V. Chari, which was used to obtain sufficient conditions for the cyclicity of any tensor product of irreducible representations of $Y_\hbar(\mathfrak{g})$ and the quantum loop algebra $U_q(L\mathfrak{g})$. We apply this dual action to prove that the cyclicity conditions from the work of Tan are identical to those obtained in the recent work of the third author and S. Gautam. Finally, we study the $U_q(L\mathfrak{g})$-counterpart of the braid group action on $Y_\hbar^0(\mathfrak{g})$, which arises from Lusztig's braid group operators and recovers the aforementioned $\mathscr{B}_\mathfrak{g}$-action defined by Chari.

Abstract:We show that Lawrence’s representation and linear representations of the braid groups from generic highest weight representations of Uq(sl2)$${U_{q}({\mathfrak{sl}}_2)}$$ detect the dual Garside length of braids in a simple and natural way. That is, by expressing a representation as a matrix over a Laurent polynomial ring using a certain natural basis, the span of the variable is equal to a constant multiple of the dual Garside length.

Abstract:The quantum double $D(G)=\Bbb C(G)\rtimes \Bbb C G$ of a finite group plays an important role in the Kitaev model for quantum computing, as well as in associated TQFT's, as a kind of Poincaré group. We interpret the known construction of its irreps, which are quasiparticles for the model, in a geometric manner strictly analogous to the Wigner construction for the usual Poincaré group of $\Bbb R^{1,3}$. Irreps are labelled by pairs $(C, \pi)$, where $C$ is a conjugacy class in the role of a mass-shell, and $\pi$ is a representation of the isotropy group $C_G$ in the role of spin. The geometric picture entails $D^\vee(G)\to \Bbb C(C_G)\blacktriangleright\!\!\!\!< \Bbb C G$ as a quantum homogeneous bundle where the base is $G/C_G$, and $D^\vee(G)\to \Bbb C(G)$ as another homogeneous bundle where the base is the group algebra $\Bbb C G$ as noncommutative spacetime. Analysis of the latter leads to a duality whereby the differential calculus and solutions of the wave equation on $\Bbb C G$ are governed by irreps and conjugacy classes of $G$ respectively, while the same picture on $\Bbb C(G)$ is governed by the reversed data. Quasiparticles as irreps of $D(G)$ also turn out to classify irreducible bicovariant differential structures $\Omega^1_{C, \pi}$ on $D^\vee(G)$ and these in turn correspond to braided-Lie algebras $\mathcal{L}_{C, \pi}$ in the braided category of $G$-crossed modules, which we call `braided racks' and study. We show under mild assumptions that $U(\mathcal{L}_{C,\pi})$ quotients to a braided Hopf algebra $B_{C,\pi}$ related by transmutation to a coquasitriangular Hopf algebra $H_{C,\pi}$.

Abstract:We use a geometric approach to show that the reduced Burau representation specialized at roots of unity has another incarnation as the monodromy representation of a moduli space of Euclidean cone metrics on the sphere, as described by Thurston. Using the theory of orbifolds, we leverage this connection to identify the kernels of these specializations in some cases, partially addressing a conjecture of Squier. The 4-strand case is the last case where the faithfulness question for the Burau representation is unknown, a question that is related e.g. to the question of whether the Jones polynomial detects the unknot. Our results allow us to place the kernel of this representation in the intersection of several topologically natural subgroups of $B_4$.

Abstract:We explore an identity between two branching graphs and propose a physical meaning in the context of the gauge-gravity correspondence. From the mathematical point of view, the identity equates probabilities associated with $\mathbb{GT}$, the branching graph of the unitary groups, with probabilities associated with $\mathbb{Y}$, the branching graph of the symmetric groups. In order to furnish the identity with physical meaning, we exactly reproduce these probabilities as the square of three point functions involving certain hook-shaped backgrounds. We study these backgrounds in the context of LLM geometries and discover that they are domain walls interpolating two AdS spaces with different radii. We also find that, in certain cases, the probabilities match the eigenvalues of some observables, the embedding chain charges. We finally discuss a holographic interpretation of the mathematical identity through our results.

Abstract:We revisit the construction of the duality group for $\mathcal N=2$ $\widehat{A}_n$-shaped quivers SCFTs and generalize it to the previously unexplored case of $\widehat{D}_n$-shaped quivers. We then provide a systematic description of non-invertible duality symmetries in both classes. Furthermore, we characterize the $\mathcal N=1$ mass deformations of these theories that preserve such symmetries, thereby identifying a large class of $\mathcal N=1$ SCFTs with non-invertible duality symmetries inherited from their parent $\mathcal N=2$ theories.

Abstract:Abstract We establish a link between the new theory of $q$-deformed rational numbers and the classical Burau representation of the braid group ${\mathcal {B}}_{3}$. We apply this link to the open problem of classification of faithful complex specializations of this representation. As a result we provide an answer to this problem in terms of the singular set of the $q$-rationals and prove the faithfulness of the Burau representation specialized at complex $t\in {\mathbb {C}}^{*}$ outside the annulus $3-2\sqrt 2 \leq |t| \leq 3+2\sqrt 2.$

Abstract:We unify and generalize several approaches to constructing braid group representations from finite groups, using iterated twisted tensor products. We provide some general characterizations and classification of these representations, focusing on the size of their images, which are typically finite groups. The well-studied Gaussian representations associated with metaplectic modular categories can be understood in this framework, and we give some new examples to illustrate their ubiquity. Our results suggest a relationship between the braiding on the G-gaugings of a pointed modular category $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ and that of $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ itself.
