Abstract:The complete scenario of high-Tc superconductivity based on experimental data from electron-tunneling spectroscopy on underdoped, overdoped and Ni-doped Bi2212 single crystals using a break-junction technique is presented. There are two different types of superconductivity in cuprates: superconductivity due to pairing of spinons on charged stripes and magnetic superconductivity mediated by spin-waves. The coherent state of the spinon superconductivity is established via the magnetic superconductivity. In NCCO, there is only the spinon superconductivity and the coherent state is established due to the Josephson coupling between charged stripes. Below Tc, we observe four different gaps, namely, (i) a SDW gap due to antiferromagnetic correlations; (ii) a superconducting gap due to spinon pairing; (iii) a d-wave magnetic superconducting gap, and (iv) a small superconducting gap most likely having g-wave symmetry. We show that the d-wave superconductivity is mediated by spin-waves and the magnitude of the superconducting gap due to pairing of spinons is larger than the magnitude of the d-wave gap, however, the d-wave gap is more intense. The superconducting gap due to pairing of spinons most likely has a s-wave symmetry. The maximum magnitudes of the SDW, the spinon and d-wave gaps are located at (p/2, p/2), (p/2, p/2) and (p, 0) on the Fermi surface, respectively. The d-g-wave superconductivity mediated by spin-waves can be considered as a pairing of magnetic polarons. We formulate a theorem for cuprates by analogy with the Anderson's theorem for classical superconductors. The presented model of high-Tc superconductivity naturally explains other experimental data.
Revealing Hidden Spin-Momentum Locking in a High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductor.

Abstract:Cuprate superconductors have long been thought of as having strong electronic correlations but negligible spin-orbit coupling. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered that one of the most studied cuprate superconductors, Bi2212, has a nontrivial spin texture with a spin-momentum locking that circles the Brillouin zone center and a spin-layer locking that allows states of opposite spin to be localized in different parts of the unit cell. Our findings pose challenges for the vast majority of models of cuprates, such as the Hubbard model and its variants, where spin-orbit interaction has been mostly neglected, and open the intriguing question of how the high-temperature superconducting state emerges in the presence of this nontrivial spin texture.
Doping Dependence of Spin-Momentum Locking in Bismuth-Based High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductors

Abstract:Non-zero spin orbit coupling has been reported in several unconventional superconductors due to the absence of inversion symmetry breaking. This contrasts with cuprate superconductors, where such interaction has been neglected for a long time. The recent report of a non-trivial spin orbit coupling in overdoped Bi2212 cuprate superconductor, has re-opened an old debate on both the source and role of such interaction and its evolution throughout the superconducting dome. Using high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal a momentum-dependent spin texture throughout the hole-doped side of the superconducting phase diagram for single- and double-layer bismuth-based cuprates. The universality of the reported effect among different dopings and the disappearance of spin polarization upon lead substitution, suggest a common source. We argue that local structural fluctuations of the CuO planes and the resulting charge imbalance may cause local inversion symmetry breaking and spin polarization, which might be crucial for understanding cuprates physics.

Abstract:Superconductivity in copper oxides emerges on doping holes or electrons into their Mott-insulating parent compounds. The spin excitations are thought to be the mediating glue for the pairing in superconductivity. Here the momentum and doping dependence of the dynamical spin response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy-driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the dispersion of the low-energy spin excitations changes strongly upon electron doping; however, the hour-glass-shaped dispersion of the low-energy spin excitations appeared in the hole-doped case is absent on the electron-doped side due to the electron–hole asymmetry. In particular, the commensurate resonance appears in the superconducting state with the resonance energy that correlates with the dome-shaped doping dependence of the superconducting gap. Moreover, the spectral weight and dispersion of the high-energy spin excitations in the superconducting state are comparable with those in the corresponding normal state, indicating that the high-energy spin excitations do not play an important part in the pair formation.

Abstract:Spin- and charge-lattice interactions are potential key factors in the microscopic mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Although both interactions can dramatically shape the low-energy electronic structure, their phenomenological roles in superconductivity are usually investigated independently. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the spectroscopic fingerprint of short-range antiferromagnetic order in conjunction with enhanced electron-phonon interaction in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor $\mathrm{Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4}$. The observed mode coupling exhibits a strong momentum dependence that is in striking contrast to the node-antinode dichotomy previously observed in the hole-doped cuprates. Our results reveal an intimate relationship between electron-phonon coupling and antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which collectively sets the stage for unconventional superconductivity in the electron-doped cuprates.

Abstract:Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the magnetic nature of cuprate superconductors is discussed. It is shown that the superconducting state is controlled by both charge carrier gap function and quasiparticle coherent weight. This quasiparticle coherent weight grows linearly with the hole doping concentration in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes, and then decreases with doping in the overdoped regime, which leads to that the maximal superconducting transition temperature occurs around the optimal doping, and then decreases in both underdoped and overdoped regimes. Within this framework, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of cuprate superconductors, and reproduce all main features of inelastic neutron scattering experiments, including the energy dependence of the incommensurate magnetic scattering at both low and high energies and commensurate resonance at intermediate energy.

Abstract:Charge density waves (CDWs) have been observed in nearly all families of copper-oxide superconductors. But the behavior of these phases across different families has been perplexing. In La-based cuprates, the CDW wavevector is an increasing function of doping, exhibiting the so-called Yamada behavior, while in Y- and Bi-based materials the behavior is the opposite. Here, we report a combined resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) and neutron scattering study of charge and spin density waves in isotopically enriched La1.8−xEu0.2SrxCuO4 over a range of doping 0.07≤x≤0.20. We find that the CDW amplitude is temperature independent and develops well above experimentally accessible temperatures. Further, the CDW wavevector shows a nonmonotonic temperature dependence, exhibiting Yamada behavior at low temperature with a sudden change occurring near the spin ordering temperature. We describe these observations using a Landau–Ginzburg theory for an incommensurate CDW in a metallic system with a finite charge compressibility and spin-CDW coupling. Extrapolating to high temperature, where the CDW amplitude is small and spin order is absent, our analysis predicts a decreasing wavevector with doping, similar to Y and Bi cuprates. Our study suggests that CDW order in all families of cuprates forms by a common mechanism.
Electromagnon excitations in high temperature superconducting states

Abstract:In this article, we discover a fundamental excitation called electromagnon in the cuprate superconducting states. Doped holes render local inversion asymmetry which produces hidden Rashba spin-orbit coupling in copper-oxide plane. Rashba effect leads to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between neighboring spins, which establishes a general spin Hamitonian combined with Heisenberg exchange interaction. The physical origin of spin fluctuations has been revealed from Rashba-induced DM term. Electromagnon excitations are found to result from spin fluctuations manifested as spin spiral states by hopping of doped holes in high temperature superconducting states. The frequency of electromagnon excitations, peak position of dielectric constant spectrum, decreases linearly with decrease of exchange interaction in various families of superconductors. Comparisons with superconductivity-induced B1g Raman peaks show good agreement and thus possibly provide the experimental evidences for electromagnon excitations in cuprates.

Abstract:Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the evolution of the magnetic excitations of the electron-doped cuprates in the superconducting state is studied. It is shown that there is a broad commensurate low energy magnetic scattering peak, while the magnetic resonance energy is located among this broad commensurate low energy scattering range. This broad commensurate low energy magnetic scattering disperses outward into a continuous ring-like incommensurate magnetic scattering at high energy.

Superconductivity and Quantum Spin Disorder in Cuprates

Abstract:A fundamental connection between superconductivity and quantum spin fluctuations in underdoped cuprates, is revealed. A variational calculation shows that {\em Cooper pair hopping} strongly reduces the local magnetization $m_0$. This effect pertains to recent neutron scattering and muon spin rotation measurements in which $m_0$ varies weakly with hole doping in the poorly conducting regime, but drops precipitously above the onset of superconductivity.

Abstract:Using Cu-L_3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we measured the dispersion and damping of spin excitations (magnons and paramagnons) in the high-T_c superconductor (Bi,Pb)_2(Sr,La)_2CuO_6+δ (Bi2201), for a large doping range across the phase diagram (0.03≲ p≲0.21). Selected measurements with full polarization analysis unambiguously demonstrate the spin-flip character of these excitations, even in the overdoped sample. We find that the undamped frequencies increase slightly with doping for all accessible momenta, while the damping grows rapidly, faster in the (0,0)→(0.5,0.5) nodal direction than in the (0,0)→(0.5,0) antinodal direction. We compare the experimental results to numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations that provide the spin dynamical structure factor S(Q,ω) of the three-band Hubbard model. The theory reproduces well the momentum and doping dependence of the dispersions and spectral weights of magnetic excitations. These results provide compelling evidence that paramagnons, although increasingly damped, persist across the superconducting dome of the cuprate phase diagram; this implies that long range antiferromagnetic correlations are quickly washed away, while short range magnetic interactions are little affected by doping.

Abstract:On the basis of first principles density functional calculations, we investigated the effect of spin flip and hole doping on the spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom in the square planar CuO 2 layers of the high- T c cuprate superconductors. The local responses of the CuO 2 layers to these point defects appear as spatially extended spin-charge-lattice coupled polarons in ferromagnetic clusters and hence introduce heterogeneity. The results demonstrate the need to treat the spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom on an equal footing in describing the high- T c superconductivity.
Coupled electronic and magnetic excitations in the cuprates and their role in the superconducting transition

Abstract:The formation of Cooper pairs, a bound state of two electrons of opposite spin and momenta by exchange of a phonon [1], is a defining feature of conventional superconductivity. In the cuprate high temperature superconductors, even though it has been established that the superconducting state also consists of Cooper pairs, the pairing mechanism remains intensely debated. Here we investigate superconducting pairing in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta (Bi2212) cuprate by employing spectral functions obtained directly from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments as input to the Bethe-Salpeter gap equation. Assuming that Cooper pairing is driven solely by spin fluctuations, we construct the single-loop spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing interaction, and use it to compute the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the particle-particle channel for multiple Bi2212 samples. The key point of our results is that, as the temperature is reduced, the leading eigenvalue increases upon approaching Tc, reaching a value of approximately 1 at the Tc corresponding to each doping value, indicating a superconducting transition with d-wave eigenfunctions. This suggests that spin fluctuations can approximately account for Tc and, consequently, mediate pairing in the cuprate high temperature superconductors.

High-energy Magnetic Excitations in Cuprate Superconductors

Abstract:In this paper, the high-energy magnetic excitations in cuprate superconductors are studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. The spin self-energy is evaluated explicitly in terms of the collective charge carrier modes in the particle–hole and particle–particle channels, and employed to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor. Our results show the existence of damped but well-defined dispersive spin excitations in the whole doping phase diagram. In particular, the charge carrier doping has a more modest effect on the high-energy spin excitations, and then the high-energy magnetic excitations retain roughly constant energy as a function of doping, with spectral weights and dispersion relations comparable to those found in the parent compound.
The Coexistence of Spinon Superconductivity and d-wave Superconductivity in Bi-2212 from Tunneling Measurements

Abstract:We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of slightly overdoped Bi2212 single crystals at low temperature using a break-junction technique. Below Tc, we observe, at least, two different superconducting gaps. We show that (i) the largest superconducting gap occurs due to pairing of spinons; (ii) the second superconducting gap has the d-wave symmetry; (iii) the d-wave gap is smaller than the spinon gap, however, predominant and occurs due to pairing of fermionic excitations carrying charge; (iv) the spinon gap has either a s-wave or (s+d) mixed symmetry with the maximum located in (p, p) direction on the Fermi surface. It is possible that there exists the third superconducting gap having a g-wave symmetry, which is approximately twice smaller in magnitude than the d-wave gap. Thus, there are two different types of superconductivity and two different types of carriers in Bi2212.

Abstract:Motivated by the premise that superconductivity in iron-based superconductors is unconventional and mediated by spin fluctuations, an intense research effort has been focused on characterizing the spin-excitation spectrum in the magnetically ordered parent phases of the Fe pnictides and chalcogenides. For these undoped materials, it is well established that the spin-excitation spectrum consists of sharp, highly dispersive magnons. The fate of these high-energy magnetic modes upon sizable doping with holes is hitherto unresolved. Here we demonstrate, using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, that optimally hole-doped superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 retains well-defined, dispersive high-energy modes of magnetic origin. These paramagnon modes are softer than, though as intense as, the magnons of undoped antiferromagnetic BaFe2As2. The persistence of spin excitations well into the superconducting phase suggests that the spin fluctuations in Fe-pnictide superconductors originate from a distinctly correlated spin state. This connects Fe pnictides to cuprates, for which, in spite of fundamental electronic structure differences, similar paramagnons are present.

Abstract:The infinite-layer cuprate ACuO2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) possesses the simplest crystal structure among numerous cuprate superconductors and can serve as a prototypical system to explore the unconventional superconductivity. Based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the infinite-layer cuprate SrCuO2 from a phonon perspective. We find that interesting fluctuations of charges, electrical dipoles, and local magnetic moments can be induced by the atomic displacements of phonon modes in SrCuO2 upon the hole doping. Among all optical phonon modes of SrCuO2 in the antiferromagnetic Néel state, only the A1g mode that involves the full-breathing O vibrations along the Cu-O bonds can cause significant fluctuations of local magnetic moments on O atoms and dramatic charge redistributions between Cu and O atoms. Notably, due to the atomic displacements of the A1g mode, both the charge fluctuations on Cu and the electrical dipoles on O show a dome-like evolution with increasing hole doping, quite similar to the experimentally observed behavior of the superconducting Tc; in comparison, the fluctuations of local magnetic moments on O display a monotonic enhancement along with the hole doping. Abstract:Superconductivity in the cuprate oxide is studied by Kondo-lattice theory based on the t – J model with the electron–phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons. The self-energy of electrons is decomposed into the single-site and multisite self-energies. It is proved by using the mapping of the single-site self-energy in the t – J model to its corresponding one in the Anderson model that the single-site self-energy is simply that of a conventional Fermi liquid, even if a superconducting order parameter appears or the multisite self-energy is anomalous. The electron liquid characterized by the single-site self-energy is a conventional Fermi liquid. The Fermi liquid is further stabilized by the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) mechanism. The stabilized Fermi liquid is a relevant unperturbed state that can be used to study superconductivity and anomalous Fermi-liquid behaviors. The so-called spin-fluctuation-mediated exchange interaction, which includes the superexchange interaction as a part, is the attractive interaction that binds d x 2 - y 2 -wave Cooper pairs. An analysis of the spin susceptibility implies that, because of the electron–phonon interaction, the imaginary part of the exchange interaction has a sharp peak or dip at ±ω * , where ω * ≃ω ph in the normal state and $(1/2)\epsilon_{\text{G}} \lesssim \omega^{*}\lesssim (1/2)\epsilon_{\text{G}} + \omega_{\text{ph}}$ in the superconducting state, where ω ph is the energy of relevant phonons and ε G is the superconducting gap. If the imaginary part has a sharp peak or dip at ±ω * , then the dispersion relation of quasi-particles has kink structures near ±ω * above and below the chemical potential, the density of states has dip-and-hump structures near ±ω * outside the coherence peaks in the superconducting state, and the anisotropy of the gap deviates from the simple d x 2 - y 2 -wave anisotropy.
