Abstract:
Dip‐pen nanolithography (DPN) is a scanning probe lithography technique that can write "inks" directly on a surface with high resolution. The "pen" was initially started from an atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip and later developed to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tip array to allow for high‐throughput nanofabrication. Over the past two decades, DPN has enabled a wide range of applications from printing arrays of small molecules to fabricating complicated hybrid structures and even integrated systems. In this review, the uses of DPN are focused upon for the synthesis of nanomaterials (NMs) divided by different postprocessing steps after the patterning. The applications of the obtained NMs are also summarized.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the synthesis of functional nanomaterials through Dip - Pen Nanolithography (DPN) and their applications. Specifically, the paper explores how to use DPN technology to synthesize various nanomaterials under different post - processing steps, and further discusses the applications of these materials. Since its discovery in 1999, DPN technology has developed into a high - resolution scanning probe lithography technology capable of directly writing "ink" on substrates. This technology initially used the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) as a "pen", and later developed to use polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tip arrays to achieve high - throughput nanofabrication. After more than 20 years of development, DPN can be used not only to synthesize sub - 2 - nanometer nanoparticles, but also to print biomaterials under mild operating conditions, avoiding the influence of harsh processing conditions such as ultraviolet or electron - beam irradiation common in other technologies. In addition, the paper also details the applications of DPN technology in aspects such as nano - catalytic arrays, nano - reactor construction, and combinatorial screening platform construction, demonstrating the broad potential of DPN technology in the field of nanoscience and technology.
