Abstract:Abstract We consider pure traction problems, and we show that incompressible linearized elasticity can be obtained as variational limit of incompressible finite elasticity under suitable conditions on external loads.

Abstract:A limit elastic energy for pure traction problem is derived from re-scaled nonlinear energy of an hyperelastic material body subject to an equilibrated force field. We show that the strains of minimizing sequences associated to re-scaled non linear energies weakly converge, up to subsequences, to the strains of minimizers of a limit energy, provided an additional compatibility condition is fulfilled by the force field. The limit energy is different from classical energy of linear elasticity; nevertheless the compatibility condition entails the coincidence of related minima and minimizers. A strong violation of this condition provides a limit energy which is unbounded from below, while a mild violation may produce a limit energy with infinitely many extra minimizers which are not minimizers of standard linear elastic energy and whose strains are not uniformly bounded. A relevant consequence of this analysis is that a rigorous validation of linear elasticity fails for compressive force fields that do not fulfil such compatibility condition.

Abstract:An energy functional for the obstacle problem in linear elasticity is obtained as a variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functionals describing a material body subject to pure traction load under a unilateral constraint representing the rigid obstacle. There exist loads pushing the body against the obstacle, but unfit for the geometry of the whole system body-obstacle, so that the corresponding variational limit turns out to be different from the classical Signorini problem in linear elasticity. However, if the force field acting on the body fulfils an appropriate geometric admissibility condition, we can show coincidence of minima. The analysis developed here provides a rigorous variational justification of the Signorini problem in linear elasticity, together with an accurate analysis of the unilateral constraint.

Linearization in incompatible elasticity for general ambient spaces

Abstract:Motivated by recent interest in elastic problems in which the target space is non-Euclidean, we study a limit where local rest distances within an elastic body are incompatible, yet close to, distances within the ambient space. Specifically, we obtain, via $\Gamma$-convergence, a limit elastic model for a sequence of elastic bodies $(M,g_\varepsilon)$ in an ambient space $(S,s)$, for Riemannian metrics $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$ such that $g_\varepsilon \to s$. Furthermore, we relate the minimum of the limit problem to a linearized curvature discrepancy between $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$, using recent results of Kupferman and Leder. This relation confirms a linearized version of a long-standing conjecture in elasticity regarding the relation between the elastic energy and the curvature of the underlying space. The main technical challenge, compared to other linearization results in elasticity, is obtaining the correct notion of displacement for manifold-valued configurations, using Sobolev truncations and parallel transport. We show that the associated compactness result is obtained if $(S,s)$ satisfies a quantitative rigidity property, analogous to the Friesecke--James--Müller rigidity estimate in Euclidean space, and show that this property holds when $(S,s)$ is a round sphere.

Variational inequalities of multilayer elastic systems with interlayer friction: existence and uniqueness of solution and convergence of numerical solution

Abstract:Based on the mathematical-physical model of pavement mechanics, a multilayer elastic system with interlayer friction conditions is constructed. Given the complex boundary conditions, the corresponding variational inequalities of the partial differential equations are derived, so that the problem can be analyzed under the variational framework. First, the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the variational inequality is proved; then the approximation error of the numerical solution based on the finite element method is analyzed, and when the finite element space satisfies certain approximation conditions, the convergence of the numerical solution is proved; finally, in the trivial finite element space, the convergence order of the numerical solution is derived. The above conclusions provide basic theoretical support for solving the displacement-strain problem of multilayer elastic systems under the framework of variational inequalities.

Abstract:We propose models in nonlinear elasticity for nonsimple materials that include surface energy terms. Additionally, we also discuss living surface loads on the boundary. We establish corresponding linearized models and show their relationship to the original ones by means of $\Gamma$-convergence.

Abstract:This paper deals with necessary and sufficient conditions for weak and strong minimizers of functionals Φ ( u ) = ∫ a b f ( x , u ( x ) , u ′ ( x ) ) d x , where u ∈ C 1 ( [ a , b ] , R N ) . We first derive conditions which are simpler than the known ones, and then apply them to several particular problems, including stability problems in the elasticity theory. In particular, we solve some open problems in [A. Majumdar, A. Raisch: Stability of twisted rods, helices and buckling solutions in three dimensions, Nonlinearity 27(2014), 2841–2867] by finding optimal conditions for the stability of a naturally straight Kirchhoff rod under various types of endpoint constraints.

Abstract:In this paper we establish existence, uniqueness, and boundedness results for an elliptic variational inequality coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Under the general framework, we present a new application modelling the antiplane shear deformation of a static frictional adhesive contact problem. The adhesion process has been extensively studied, but it is usual to assume a priori that the intensity of adhesion is bounded by introducing truncation operators. The aim of this article is to remove this restriction. The proof is based on an iterative approximation scheme showing that the problem has a unique solution. A key ingredient is finding uniform a priori bounds for each iterate. These are obtained by adapting versions of the Moser iteration to our system of equations.

Abstract:A convergence theory is established for a truncation method in solving polyconvex elasticity problems involving the Lavrentiev phenomenon. Numerical results on a recent example by Foss et al., which has a polyconvex integrand and admits continuous singular minimizers, not only verify our convergence theorems but also provide a sharper estimate on the upper bound of a perturbation parameter for the existence of the Lavrentiev phenomenon in the example.
A Hidden Convexity of Nonlinear Elasticity

Abstract:A technique for developing convex dual variational principles for the governing PDE of nonlinear elastostatics and elastodynamics is presented. This allows the definition of notions of a variational dual solution and a dual solution corresponding to the PDEs of nonlinear elasticity, even when the latter arise as formal Euler-Lagrange equations corresponding to non-quasiconvex elastic energy functionals whose energy minimizers do not exist. This is demonstrated rigorously in the case of elastostatics for the Saint-Venant Kirchhoff material (in all dimensions), where the existence of variational dual solutions is also proven. The existence of a variational dual solution for the incompressible neo-Hookean material in 2-d is also shown. Stressed and unstressed elastostatic and elastodynamic solutions in 1 space dimension corresponding to a non-convex, double-well energy are computed using the dual methodology. In particular, we show the stability of a dual elastodynamic equilibrium solution for which there are regions of non-vanishing length with negative elastic stiffness, i.e.~non-hyperbolic regions, for which the corresponding primal problem is ill-posed and demonstrates an explosive `Hadamard instability;' this appears to have implications for the modeling of physically observed softening behavior in macroscopic mechanical response.

Abstract:In this paper we derive a new model for visco-elasticity with large deformations where the independent variables are the stretch and the rotation tensors which intervene with second gradients terms accounting for physical properties in the principle of virtual power. Another basic feature of our model is that there is conditional compatibility, entering the model as kinematic constraints and depending on the magnitude of an internal force associated to dislocations. Moreover, due to the kinematic constraints, the virtual velocities depend on the solutions of the problem. As a consequence, the variational formulation of the problem and the related mathematical analysis are neither standard nor straightforward. We adopt the strategy to invert the kinematic constraints through Green propagators, obtaining a system of integro-differential coupled equations. As a first mathematical step, we develop the analysis of the model in a simplified setting, i.e. considering the quasi-stationary version of the full system where we neglect inertia. In this context, we prove the existence of a global in time strong solution in three space dimensions for the system, employing techniques from PDEs and convex analysis, thus obtaining a novel breakthrough in the field of three-dimensional finite visco-elasticity described in terms of the stretch and rotation variables. We also study a limit problem, letting the magnitude of the internal force associated to dislocations tend to zero, in which case the deformation becomes incompatible and the equations takes the form of a coupled system of PDEs. For the limit problem we obtain global existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence from data in three space dimensions.

The repulsion property in nonlinear elasticity and a numerical scheme to circumvent it

Abstract:For problems in the calculus of cariations that exhibit the Lavrentiev phenomenon, it is known that the \textit{repulsion property} holds, that is, if one approximates the global minimizer in these problems by smooth functions, then the approximate energies will blow up. Thus standard numerical schemes, like the finite element method, may fail when applied directly to these type of problems. In this paper we prove that the repulsion property holds for variational problems in three dimensional elasticity that exhibit cavitation. In addition we propose a numerical scheme that circumvents the repulsion property, which is an adaptation of the Modica and Mortola functional for phase transitions in liquids, in which the phase function is coupled to the mechanical part of the stored energy functional, via the determinant of the deformation gradient. We show that the corresponding approximations by this method satisfy the lower bound $\Gamma$--convergence property in the multi-dimensional non--radial case. The convergence to the actual cavitating minimizer is established for a spherical body, in the case of radial deformations, and for the case of an elastic fluid without assuming radial symmetry.

The structure of the friction coefficient $\mu$ is new with motivation from geophysical applications in earth sciences with dependence on an external state variable $\alpha$ and the slip rate $|\dot{u}_\tau|$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a dynamic viscoelastic contact problem with friction and wear, and describe it as a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. We formulate the previous problem as a hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality by employing the variational method. We adopt the Rothe method to show the existence and uniqueness of weak solution for the hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality under mild conditions. We also give a fully discrete scheme for solving the hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality and obtain error estimates for the fully discrete scheme.

Abstract:Invariant solutions of two-dimensional elastodynamics in linear homogeneous isotropic materials are considered via the group theoretical method. The second order partial differential equations of elastodynamics are reduced to ordinary differential equations under the infinitesimal operators. Three invariant solutions are constructed. Their graphical figures are presented and physical meanings are elucidated in some cases.

Abstract:Traction-separation relationship is an important material characteristic describing the fracture behaviour of quasi-brittle solids. A new numerical scheme for identification of the traction-separation relation by inverse analysis of data obtained from various types of fracture tests is proposed. Due to employing the concept of sequentially linear analysis, the method exhibits a superior numerical stability and versatility. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on examples involving identification of the traction-separation relationship using experimental data from various test configurations.

Abstract:We consider Riesz' fractional gradient and a truncated version of it. The equations of nonlocal nonlinear elasticity based on those gradients are known. We perform a formal linearization and arrive at the equations of linear elasticity based on those nonlocal operators. We prove the existence of solutions of the linear equations, notably, by a nonlocal version of Korn's inequality. Finally, we show that the linearizations obtained are particular cases of Eringen's model with singular kernels.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a study of a history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality arising in contact mechanics. The contact problem concerns the deformation of a viscoelastic body with long memory, subject to a general friction law on one part of the boundary and a frictionless Signorini condition on another part of the boundary. The solution existence and uniqueness of the history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality based on a Lagrange multiplier approach are proved. Then, a fully discrete scheme is introduced and studied. The trapezoidal rule is used to approximate the integral in the history-dependent operator. For the spatial discretization, the linear finite elements are used to discretize the displacement field, and dual basis functions are used in the approximation of the Lagrange multiplier. Optimal order error estimates are derived for the displacement and the Lagrange multiplier under appropriate solution regularity assumptions. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical prediction of the convergence orders.
