Abstract:We propose models in nonlinear elasticity for nonsimple materials that include surface energy terms. Additionally, we also discuss living surface loads on the boundary. We establish corresponding linearized models and show their relationship to the original ones by means of $\Gamma$-convergence.

Abstract:Starting from a model of nonlinear magnetoelasticity where magnetization is defined in the Eulerian configuration while elastic deformation is in the Lagrangean one, we rigorously derive a linearized model that coincides with the standard one that already appeared in the literature, see, e.g., DeSimone \& James (2002) and where the zero-stress strain is quadratic in the magnetization. The relation of the nonlinear and linear model is stated in terms of the $\Gamma$-convergence and convergence of minimizers.

Abstract:Surface growth is a crucial component of many natural and artificial processes from cell proliferation to additive manufacturing. In elastic systems surface growth is usually accompanied by the development of geometrical incompatibility leading to residual stresses and triggering various instabilities. In a recent paper (PRL, 119, 048001, 2017) we developed a linearized elasticity theory of incompatible surface growth which quantitatively linked deposition protocols with post-growth states of stress. Here we extend this analysis to account for both physical and geometrical nonlinearities of an elastic solid. The new development reveals the shortcomings of the linearized theory, in particular, its inability to describe kinematically confined surface growth and to account for growth-induced elastic instabilities.

Abstract:Recent works have shown that in contrast to classical linear elastic fracture mechanics, endowing crack fronts in a brittle Green-elastic solid with Steigmann-Ogden surface elasticity yields a model that predicts bounded stresses and strains at the crack tips for plane-strain problems. However, singularities persist for anti-plane shear (mode-III fracture) under far-field loading, even when Steigmann-Ogden surface elasticity is incorporated. This work is motivated by obtaining a model of brittle fracture capable of predicting bounded stresses and strains for all modes of loading. We formulate an exact general theory of a three-dimensional solid containing a boundary surface with strain-gradient surface elasticity. For planar reference surfaces parameterized by flat coordinates, the form of surface elasticity reduces to that introduced by Hilgers and Pipkin, and when the surface energy is independent of the surface covariant derivative of the stretching, the theory reduces to that of Steigmann and Ogden. We discuss material symmetry using Murdoch and Cohen's extension of Noll's theory. We present a model small-strain surface energy that incorporates resistance to geodesic distortion, satisfies strong ellipticity, and requires the same material constants found in the Steigmann-Ogden theory. Finally, we derive and apply the linearized theory to mode-III fracture in an infinite plate under far-field loading. We prove that there always exists a unique classical solution to the governing integro-differential equation, and in contrast to using Steigmann-Ogden surface elasticity, our model is consistent with the linearization assumption in predicting finite stresses and strains at the crack tips.

Linearization in incompatible elasticity for general ambient spaces

Abstract:Motivated by recent interest in elastic problems in which the target space is non-Euclidean, we study a limit where local rest distances within an elastic body are incompatible, yet close to, distances within the ambient space. Specifically, we obtain, via $\Gamma$-convergence, a limit elastic model for a sequence of elastic bodies $(M,g_\varepsilon)$ in an ambient space $(S,s)$, for Riemannian metrics $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$ such that $g_\varepsilon \to s$. Furthermore, we relate the minimum of the limit problem to a linearized curvature discrepancy between $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$, using recent results of Kupferman and Leder. This relation confirms a linearized version of a long-standing conjecture in elasticity regarding the relation between the elastic energy and the curvature of the underlying space. The main technical challenge, compared to other linearization results in elasticity, is obtaining the correct notion of displacement for manifold-valued configurations, using Sobolev truncations and parallel transport. We show that the associated compactness result is obtained if $(S,s)$ satisfies a quantitative rigidity property, analogous to the Friesecke--James--Müller rigidity estimate in Euclidean space, and show that this property holds when $(S,s)$ is a round sphere.

Curvature dependent surface energy for free standing monolayer graphene: geometrical and material linearization with closed form solutions

Abstract:Continuum modeling of a free-standing graphene monolayer, viewed as a two dimensional 2-lattice, requires specifications of the components of the shift vector that act as an auxiliary variable. The field equations are then the equations ruling the shift vector, together with momentum and moment of momentum equations. To introduce material linearity energy is assumed to have a quadratic dependence on the strain tensor, the curvature tensor, the shift vector, as well as to combinations of them. Hexagonal symmetry then reduces the overall number of independent material constants to nine. We present an analysis of simple loading histories such as axial, biaxial tension/compression and simple shear for a range of problems of increasing difficulty for the geometrically and materially linear case. We start with the problem of in-plane motions only. By prescribing the displacement, the components of the shift vector are evaluated. This way the field equations are satisfied trivially. Out-of-plane motions are treated as well; we assume in-plane tension/compression that leads to buckling/wrinkling and solve for the components of the shift vector as well as the function present in buckling's modeling. The assumptions of linearity adopted here simplifies the analysis and facilitates analytical results.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. We analyze the finite-strain Poynting–Thomson viscoelastic model. In its linearized small-deformation limit, this corresponds to the serial connection of an elastic spring and a Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic element. In the finite-strain case, the total deformation of the body results from the composition of two maps, describing the deformation of the viscoelastic element and the elastic one, respectively. We prove the existence of suitably weak solutions by a time-discretization approach based on incremental minimization. Moreover, we prove a rigorous linx earization result, showing that the corresponding small-strain model is indeed recovered in the small-loading limit.

Abstract:The paper presents a finite element solution of structural mechanics problems with surface nonlinearities. The nonlinearities arise for instance in contact problems. The contact surface between two interacting parts of a structure varies with the applied load and on the contact surface contact constitutive relations must be satisfied. Firstly, the paper presents incremental governing equations for linear elastic materials when small displacements and strains are assumed. As contact constitutive relation, i.e. relation between the contact stress increment vector and the slip increment vector in the contact surface, a general slip criterion with associated slip rule is included. Secondly, the governing equations are solved by means of the finite element displacement method. Only a few of the total number of degrees of freedoms are involved in the nonlinearities. In order to reduce the size of the problem degrees of freedom not involved in the nonlinearities are eliminated by using the superelement technique. Numerical results for several plane and axisymmetric problems are presented and compared with photoelastic experiments and other results known. A Coulomb type of slip criterion with associated slip hardening rule is assumed. The applicability of the method to crack closure problems is shown. Stress intensity factors are calculated and compared with known results.

Abstract:The deformation of a soft substrate by a straight contact line is calculated, and the result applied to a static rivulet between two parallel contact lines. The substrate is supposed to be incompressible (Stokes like description of elasticity), and having a non-zero surface tension, that eventually differs depending on whether its surface is dry or wet. For a single straight line separating two domains with the same substrate surface tension, the ridge profile is shown to be be very close to that of Shanahan and de Gennes, but shift from the contact line of a distance equal to the elastocapillary length built upon substrate surface tension and shear modulus. As a result, the divergence near contact line disappears and is replaced by a balance of surface tensions at the contact line (Neumann equilibrium), though the profile remains nearly logarithmic. In the rivulet case, using the previous solution as a Green function allows one to calculate analytically the geometry of the distorted substrate, and in particular its slope on each side (wet and dry) of the contact lines. These two slopes are shown to be nearly proportional to the inverse of substrate surface tensions, though the respective weight of each side (wet and dry) in the final expressions is difficult to establish because of the linear nature of standard elasticity. A simple argument combining Neumann and Young equations is however provided to overcome this limitation. The result may have surprising implications for the modelling of hysteresis on systems having both plastic and elastic properties, as initiated long ago by Extrand and Kumagai.

Abstract:We study the contribution of surface elasticity to the two-dimensional contact problem in a generally anisotropic material using the Stroh sextic formalism. Surface elasticity is incorporated into the model of deformation using an anisotropic version of the continuum-based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. Full-field analytic solutions are obtained in terms of exponential integrals for an anisotropic half-space when the contact surface is subjected to two particular types of loading: first, we consider the case of a uniform load (shearing and pressure) applied to an infinitely long strip of the contact surface and second, by reducing the strip to zero width, we deduce the corresponding result for a concentrated line force acting on the contact surface. The analysis indicates that the surface deformation gradient is finite in the first case of uniform loading of the strip and exhibits a weak logarithmic singularity at the location of the applied concentrated line force in the second case.

Abstract:The Shuttleworth equation: a linear stress-strain relation ubiquitously used in modeling the behavior of soft surfaces. Its validity in the realm of materials subject to large deformation is a topic of current debate. Here, we allow for large deformation by deriving the constitutive behavior of the surface from the general framework of finite kinematics. We distinguish cases of finite and infinitesimal surface relaxation preceding an infinitesimal applied deformation. The Shuttleworth equation identifies as the Cauchy stress measure in the fully linearized setting. We show that both in finite and linearized cases, measured elastic constants depend on the utilized stress measure. In addition, we discuss the physical implications of our results and analyze the impact of surface relaxation on the estimation of surface elastic moduli in the light of two different test cases.

Beris-Edwards Models on Evolving Surfaces: A Lagrange-D'Alembert Approach

Abstract:Using the Lagrange-D'Alembert principle we develop thermodynamically consistent surface Beris-Edwards models. These models couple viscous inextensible surface flow with a Landau-de Gennes-Helfrich energy and consider the simultaneous relaxation of the surface Q-tensor field and the surface, by taking hydrodynamics of the surface into account. We consider different formulations, a general model with three-dimensional surface Q-tensor dynamics and possible constraints incorporated by Lagrange multipliers and a surface conforming model with tangential anchoring of the surface Q-tensor field and possible additional constraints. In addition to different treatments of the surface Q-tensor, which introduces different coupling mechanisms with the geometric properties of the surface, we also consider different time derivatives to account for different physical interpretations of surface nematics. We relate the derived models to established models in simplified situations, compare the different formulations with respect to numerical realizations and mention potential applications in biology.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Volume 62, Issue 2, Page 1034-1059, April 2024. This paper studies the linearization of the viscous tank–liquid system. The linearization of the tank–liquid system gives a high-order partial differential equation, which is a combination of a wave equation with Kelvin–Voigt damping and a Euler–Bernoulli beam equation. The single input appears in two of the boundary conditions (boundary input). The paper provides results both for the open-loop system (existence/uniqueness of solutions and stability properties of the open-loop system) as well as results for the construction of feedback stabilizers. More specifically, the feedback design methodology is based on control Lyapunov functionals (CLFs). The proposed CLFs are modifications and augmentations of the total energy functionals for the tank–liquid system so that the dissipative effects of viscosity, friction, and surface tension are captured. By focusing on the linearized water–tank system, we are able to provide results that are not provided in the nonlinear case: (1) existence and uniqueness of solutions, (2) simultaneous presence of friction and surface tension, and (3) stabilization in a stronger norm, using a different CLF.

Abstract:We extend to finite elasticity the Data-Driven formulation of geometrically linear elasticity presented in Conti, Müller, Ortiz, Arch.\ Ration.\ Mech.\ Anal.\ 229, 79-123, 2018. The main focus of this paper concerns the formulation of a suitable framework in which the Data-Driven problem of finite elasticity is well-posed in the sense of existence of solutions. We confine attention to deformation gradients $F \in L^p(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$ and first Piola-Kirchhoff stresses $P \in L^q(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$, with $(p,q)\in(1,\infty)$ and $1/p+1/q=1$. We assume that the material behavior is described by means of a material data set containing all the states $(F,P)$ that can be attained by the material, and develop germane notions of coercivity and closedness of the material data set. Within this framework, we put forth conditions ensuring the existence of solutions. We exhibit specific examples of two- and three-dimensional material data sets that fit the present setting and are compatible with material frame indifference.

Contact lines on soft solids with uniform surface tension: analytical solutions and double transition for increasing deformability

Abstract:Using an exact Green function method, we calculate analytically the substrate deformations near straight contact lines on a soft, linearly elastic incompressible solid, having a uniform surface tension γ s . This generalized Flamant–Cerruti problem of a single contact line is regularized by introducing a finite width 2 a for the contact line. We then explore the dependence of the substrate deformations upon the softness ratio l s / a , where l s = γ s /(2 μ ) is the elastocapillary length built upon γ s and on the elastic shear modulus μ . We discuss the force transmission problem from the liquid surface tension to the bulk and surface of the solid and show that the Neuman condition of surface tension balance at the contact line is only satisfied in the asymptotic limit a / l s → 0 , the Young condition holding in the opposite limit. We then address the problem of two parallel contact lines separated from a distance 2 R , and we recover analytically the ‘double transition’ upon the ratios l s / a and R / l s identified recently by Lubbers et al. (2014 J. Fluid Mech. 747 , R1. ( doi:10.1017/jfm.2014.152 )), when one increases the substrate deformability. We also establish a simple analytic law ruling the contact angle selection upon R / l s in the limit a / l s ≪1, that is the most common situation encountered in problems of wetting on soft materials.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. We derive the incremental equations for a hyperelastic solid that incorporate surface tension effect by assuming that the surface energy is a general function of the surface deformation gradient. The incremental equations take the same simple form as their purely mechanical counterparts and are valid for any geometry. In particular, for isotropic materials, the extra surface elastic moduli are expressed in terms of the surface energy function and the two surface principal stretches. The effectiveness of the resulting incremental theory is illustrated by applying it to study the Plateau–Rayleigh and Wilkes instabilities in a solid cylinder.

Linearization of quasistatic fracture evolution in brittle materials

Abstract:We prove a linearization result for quasistatic fracture evolution in nonlinear elasticity. As the stiffness of the material tends to infinity, we show that rescaled displacement fields and their associated crack sets converge to a solution of quasistatic crack growth in linear elasticity without any a priori assumptions on the geometry of the crack set. This result corresponds to the evolutionary counterpart of the static linearization result by the first author, where a Griffith model for nonsimple brittle materials has been considered featuring an elastic energy which also depends suitably on the second gradient of the deformations. The proof relies on a careful study of unilateral global minimality, as determined by the nonlinear evolutionary problem, and its linearization together with a variant of the jump transfer lemma in GSBD.

Nonlinearly Elastic Maps: Energy Minimizing Configurations of Membranes on Prescribed Surfaces

Abstract:We propose a model for nonlinearly elastic membranes undergoing finite deformations while confined to a regular frictionless surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This is a physically correct model of the analogy sometimes given to motivate harmonic maps between manifolds. The proposed energy density function is convex in the strain pair comprising the deformation gradient and the local area ratio. If the target surface is a plane, the problem reduces to 2-dimensional, polyconvex nonlinear elasticity addressed by J.M. Ball. On the other hand, the energy density is not rank-one convex for unconstrained deformations into $\mathbb{R}^3$. We show that the problem admits an energy-minimizing configuration when constrained to lie on the given surface. For a class of Dirichlet problems, we demonstrate that the minimizing deformation is a homeomorphism onto its image on the given surface and establish the weak Eulerian form of the equilibrium equations.

Abstract:In the stationary case, atomistic interaction energies can be proved to $\Gamma$-converge to classical elasticity models in the simultaneous atomistic-to-continuum and linearization limit [19],[40]. The aim of this note is that of extending the convergence analysis to the dynamic setting. Moving within the framework of [40], we prove that solutions of the equation of motion driven by atomistic deformation energies converge to the solutions of the momentum equation for the corresponding continuum energy of linearized elasticity. By recasting the evolution problems in their equivalent energy-dissipation-inertia-principle form, we directly argue at the variational level of evolutionary $\Gamma$-convergence [32],[36]. This in particular ensures the pointwise in time convergence of the energies.
