Abstract:A series of nickel and palladium complexes bearing (imino)pyridyl alcohol tridentate [N,N,O] ligands, 2-(ArNCMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4), were synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that five-coordinated nickel halide complexes (1a–4a and 1b) and six-coordinated nickel acetate complex (1c) were prepared, and cationic palladium complexes (1d and 2d) formed with the [PdCl4]2− counterion. All these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 1.883 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(cat) h−1 (2d) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene on treatment with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO), affording the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The parameters of reaction conditions, the type of metals and steric effects of coordinative ligands had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:But-3-en-1-ol has been pre-protected by triisobutylaluminium and terpolymerized with ethylene and norbornene by rac-[Et(Ind)(2)]ZrCl2/MAO catalysts. The strong polarity of diisobutyl(but-3-en-1-oxy)aluminum causes a slight reduction in the catalyst activity and yields a small fraction of crystallinity. The but-3-en-1-ol content in the terpolymer is as high as 3.2% and can be readily adjusted by varying the reaction conditions. When the norbornene/ethylene ratio is over 10, the norbornene incorporation efficiency is not affected by the polar monomer and is close to that of the copolymerization. Similar to the ethylene/norbornene copolymers, the thermal properties of the obtained terpolymers are mainly determined by their norbornene contents.

Abstract:A series of nickel complexes, bis(salicylideneiminato)nickel(II), were supported on spherical MgCl 2 and SiO 2 . Scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersed X‐ray spectroscopy, and the BET method for surface areas measurements were utilized to examine the supporting process of the catalysts. The particle morphology of the original support is retained and replicated throughout the supported catalyst preparation and norbornene polymerization. Abstract:Various nickel complexes bearing [N,O], [P,N] ligands as well as the supported nickel complexes were prepared and showed moderate to high catalytic activities for vinyl polymerization of norbornene. The formed polynorbornenes (PNBs) are soluble for measuring both the molecular weights and the molecular weight distributions. Comparing the results in homogeneous catalysis, the PNBs produced by supported catalysts possessed higher molecular weights and slightly broader molecular weight distributions. The reactor fouling generally happens in homogeneous catalytic systems, while spherical polymer particle morphology could be obtained without reactor fouling by using MgCl2-supported nickel catalysts.

Abstract:A series of mono- and di-nuclear nickel(II) complexes bearing 3-aryliminomethyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the dinuclear nickel complexes formed with two bridged ligands and one bromide around each nickel center and the mononuclear nickel complexes bearing two centrosymmetrical ligands exhibited a distorted square-planar geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all these nickel complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 9.88 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(Ni) h−1 (6b) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene, yielding the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The steric and electronic factors of ligands and reaction parameters had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:Polymerization of norbornene has been promoted by a catalyst system composed of [2-methyl-8-(diphenylphosphino)quinoline]nickel dichloride and MAO. The catalytic system showed high activity (activity < 1.70 x 10(8) g-PNB/mol-Ni h) for vinyl addition type polymerization. The resultant polynorbornenes possessed high molecular weight (M-w < 2.08 x 10(6) g/mol) with wide molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 19.20), and were soluble, showing no crystallinity in the solid state. The catalytic activity, molecular weight as well as polydispersity of the resultant polymer can be controlled over a wide range by varying the reaction parameters. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Norbornene polymerization and ethylene/norbornene copolymerization were studied using constrained geometry complexes 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (1), 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (2), and 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-phenylphenoxytitanium dichloride (3) as catalysts with AliBu3 and Ph3CB(C6F5)4 as cocatalysts. Polymerization results indicate that these catalyst systems are highly active for both the homopolymerization of norbornene and the copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene. The norbornene homopolymerization is vinyl addition polymerization. Ethylene/norbornene copolymers with high norbornene incorporation (>50%) were easily obtained with these catalyst systems by increasing the norbornene feed concentration. The produced polymers were characterized by 13C NMR, IR, DSC and GPC.

Abstract:Two α-diimine nickel complexes with benzophenyl groups at the ortho position of aniline were used in the homopolymerization of norbornene and copolymerization of norbornene with 1-hexene in the presence of methylaluminoxane.The effects of some reaction parameters,such as polymerization temperature,Al/Ti molar ratio and solvent,on homo-polymeration activity were studied.The effects of polymerization temperature and comonomer ratio on copolymerization activity were also discussed.The microstructure,glass transition temperature,relative molecular mass and thermal stability of the resulting polymers were characterized by FTIR,13C NMR,DMA etc.With increasing 1-hexene feed ratios,the catalytic activity and glass transition temperature decreased.However,the 1-hexene content in the copolymers was lower.The two a-diimine nickel complexes demonstrated high thermal stability and high activity in chlorinated solvents.And the homo-and copolymerization of norbomene are vinyl addition polymerizations.

Abstract:We demonstrate that polynorbornene containing dibromomaleimide side group is a novel polymer platform for post-polymerization modification. Polymer P0 was obtained through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of monomer 2 by using Grubbs third generation catalyst. Subsequently, P0 was chemically modified with 1-butanethiol and benzyl mercaptan to generate P1 and P2, respectively. In this way, the dibromomaleimide units on polymer side chain were quantitatively converted to dithiolmaleimide moieties. All the polymer samples exhibited good thermal stability and relatively high glass transition temperature. Meanwhile, the effects of substituent and solvent on fluorescent properties of the polymers were elucidated.

Abstract:Novel bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes catalyzed the vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene at a single active site with high activity. The latter exhibited higher activity than the former. Smaller substituents around the imido group in the ligand were more favorable for increasing the activity than bulkier ones. The polynorbornenes were all noncrystalline but had short‐range order and their glass transition temperature, Tg, ranged from 270 to 400 °C. Furthermore, the random copolymerization of norbornene and styrene was catalyzed by the bridged dinuclear diimine nickel complex with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the copolymers are “true” copolymers. The reactivity ratios were rstyrene = 0.281, rnorbornene = 18.7. The packing density, thermostability and the glass transition temperatures of copolymers are increased relative to polystyrene. The solubility and processability of the copolymers are improved relative to polynorbornene. The structures of bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes. Abstract:A series of neutral salicylaldiminato Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized, and complexes a and e have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. These compounds show highly catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene with MAO cocatalyst, which could be up to 2.86 x 10(8) g PNB/(mol Ni(.)h), and also lead to various activities, molecular weights, and distributions of polynorbornenes under different reaction conditions.

Abstract:Recent progress regarding the copolymerization of norbornene with various polar α‐olefins catalyzed by nickel and palladium catalysts is reviewed here with special attention paid to the diverse catalyst frameworks, polar monomer scopes as well as polymer microstructures. Both the influences of steric effect and electron property of ligand substituents and the type of polar monomers on the catalytic behaviors (activity, stability, polarity tolerance, etc.) and the polymer microstructures (molecular weight and distribution, comonomer contents, etc.) have been summarized. The introduction of noncyclic‐olefins, such as polar vinyl monomers, polar higher α‐olefins, and polar styrenes, into rigid cyclic‐based polynorbornene chain resulted in significant modifications on the polarity, compatibility, thermostability, processibility, transparency, and many other properties of the material, which has also been discussed in the review. The contents of this review have been classified according to the type of polar monomers involved in the norbornene copolymerization, and each section included nickel and palladium catalysts bearing different ligand structures, which will be meaningful for the development of new types of catalysts and new families of norbornene‐based cyclic olefin copolymer materials in the future.

Abstract:A series of tridentate monoanionic [C–,N,X] (X = S, P) nickel(II) complexes [(C6H4CH═NPh-2-XPh)NiBr] (X = S (1a), PPh (1b)) and palladium(II) complexes [(C6H4CH═NPh-2-XPh)PdCl] (X = S (2a), PPh (2b)) were synthesized from the reactions of La and Lb (La = BrC6H4CH═NPh-2-SPh, Lb = BrC6H4CH═NPh-2-PPh2) with (DME)NiBr2 and (COD)PdCl2, respectively, in good yields. All complexes were fully characterized by IR, NMR, and elemental analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of complex 2a revealed an almost square-planar geometry of the metal center. After activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), the title complexes 1a,b and 2a,b can be used as catalysts for norbornene polymerization to produce vinyl addition type polynorbornene (PNB) with good catalytic activities. The good catalytic activities of complexes 1b and 2b as procatalysts which contain a P atom as the third coordinated atom can be maintained even at high temperature, demonstrating their excellent thermal stability.

Abstract:The norbornene/ethylene copolymerization was investigated by using Me(2)SiCp(2)MtCl(2)(Mt = Zr, Ti)/MAO catalyst system. The copolymerization Kinetics was studied under different conditions. The copolymer was characterized by DSC and C-13-NMR methods. It was found the zirconocene has better catalyst ability for copolymerization of ethylene and norbornene than titanocene. Under similar feed ratio, the copolymers with high norbornene content and glass transition temperature were synthesized compared with literature.

Abstract:A catalyst system comprising Cp*TiCl 2 (OPhTz) (Cp* = C 5 Me 5 , OPhTz = tetrazole-mono- ortho -substituted phenoxy anion), i Bu 3 Al, and [Ph 3 C][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] is employed in the vinyl-addition copolymerization of norbornene (NB) and 1-octene (OT) to understand the catalytic effects of the N -donor tetrazole substituent. Copolymerization is accompanied by significant β-hydride elimination, producing poly (norbornene- co -1-octene) (P(NB- co -OT)) with low yield and molecular weight. Although the incorporation of OT into the copolymer is less than expected, competitive incorporation of the two monomers is observed. Increasing the mole fraction of OT in the feed reduces both the yield and molecular weight of the copolymer. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that the catalyst system yields P(NB- co -OT)s that are terminated prior to complete monomer conversion, along with non-isolated cooligomers and OT-derived isomers. The cationic titanium (IV) center stabilized by the N -donor tetrazole substituent facilitates the highly regioselective 2,1-insertion of OT. This slows subsequent monomer insertion, thereby promoting β-hydride elimination.

Abstract:Here progress in the development of the catalytic addition polymerization and copolymerization of norbornene by various transition-metal complexes is described. A full literature account is given in this review mostly covering the years of 2000 to the early of 2009. The interest in vinyl homo-polynorbornene is driven by its dielectric and mechanical properties for the technical application as an interlevel dielectric in microelectronics applications. For comparison, the norbornene/olefin copolymerization is also considered. The metal catalysts of Ti, Cr, Zr, V, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd and Cu are introduced and methylalumoxane (MAO) or perfluorinated borane, e.g. B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , cocatalysts are presented in terms of their activity and ligand effects are emphasized.

Abstract:Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) has emerged as an important tool for the preparation of architecturally unique macromolecules from cyclic olefins. A wide variety of catalytic systems, ranging from simple metal salts to highly sophisticated alkylidene metal complexes, have been used for the achievement of this synthetically useful transformation. Especially, tremendous efforts have been directed toward the ruthenium-based catalytic systems as well as the understanding of their reactivity patterns. And Grubbs catalysts represent the ultimate in terms of activity, but they are not cost effective due to the sophisticated ligand. Therefore, alternative catalyst precursors that are more readily accessible have been and are still being actively developed. Therefore, a hydride ligand containing mononuclear ruthenium complex Ru(p-cymene)HClPCy3 reported here was designed to catalyze ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene with high activity. The hydride ligand is critical based on its high trans effect (for ligand dissociation) and the ability to generate carbene species through plausible migratory insertion and α-elimination steps. This catalytic system bearing hydride ligand could be an alternative for the well-defined Ru-based initiators which rules out the need of installation of complex ancillary ligands like NHC or O-Ligand in the coordination sphere or the need of activation with diazo compounds in the search for novel active catalytic species. Further study on the catalytic polymerization activity of Ru(p-cymene)H2PCy3 compared to the Ru(p-cymene)HClPCy3 system revealed that chloride ligand was also crucial to the hydride containing mononuclear ruthenium system, which contains easily dissociated ligand p-cymene and large phosphine ligand that stabilizes the metal complex. And the possible mechanism for the reaction was proposed.

Abstract:<p>Ring opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene (NBE) by binuclear vanadium alkylidene in‐situ formed from dialkyl complexes was investigated. Higher activities were observed by the binuclear system than mononuclear analogues. Especially the cyclic polymers were obtained and demonstrated. It is proposed that cyclic binuclear vanadium alkylidene was afforded due to the intramolecular chain‐transfer reaction. The size of polymer ring could be adjusted by the vanadium catalyst structure and polymerization temperature. Abstract:The development of high-performance catalysts is a goal that is constantly being pursued in the field of polyolefins. In this study, a class of Hf (Hf1 and Hf2) and Zr (Zr1 and Zr2) dimethyl complexes were prepared by one-pot reactions of phenoxy-imino-quinoline compounds with MMe4 (M = Hf and Zr). Both NMR spectroscopy and X-ray studies suggested the formation of phenoxy-amido-quinoline metal complexes because of methyl migration from the metal center to the carbon atom of imine. These Hf and Zr complexes exhibited moderate to high activity (up to 9060 kg (PE)·mol–1(M)·h–1) toward ethylene homopolymerization and copolymerization with 1-octene in the presence of 1 equiv of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] as a cocatalyst. It was significant that Zr complexes were far more active than Hf complexes bearing the same ligand under otherwise identical conditions, revealing a tremendous metal center effect on catalysis. On the other hand, the nature of the ligand also strongly influenced the catalytic properties, including the activity and properties, of resultant polymers. Thus, Zr complex Zr1 with a sterically demanding and electron-donating Me group on the 2-position of quinoline showed the highest activity and good thermal stability.
