Abstract:Anthropogenic activity mainly burning of fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil is one of the major reasons which increase concentration of earth-warming gases. Chief among these gases is carbon dioxide. As per the data in last 250 years, CO2 level increases from 250 to more than 280 parts per million (PPM). Major consequences of this rise in CO2 level involve disturbance in climatic factors such as sea level rise; floods; droughts; changes in the amount, timing and distribution of rain; increased frequency and intensity of wildfires and disturbance of coastal marine and other ecosystems. That is why control over CO2 production and reducing CO2 level become important. One of the natural ways to CO2 control involves CO2 sequestration which involves removal of CO2 from atmosphere or storage of CO2 from emission sources to vegetation, soil and sediments. Biological carbon sequestration has opened up a new area of research towards enhancing rapid fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide in present level to reduce and mitigate global warming and climate change. This chapter describes various sources of carbon dioxide with relation to increasing greenhouse gases. It also includes scientific basis for current understanding of climate change and the role of biological carbon sequestration like soil, grassland, peatland and forests for mitigating the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Abstract:Carbon capture from ambient air has been proposed as a mitigation strategy to counteract anthropogenic climate change. We use an Earth system model to investigate the response of the coupled climate–carbon system to an instantaneous removal of all anthropogenic CO2 from the atmosphere. In our extreme and idealized simulations, anthropogenic CO2 emissions are halted and all anthropogenic CO2 is removed from the atmosphere at year 2050 under the IPCC A2 CO2 emission scenario when the model-simulated atmospheric CO2 reaches 511 ppm and surface temperature reaches 1.8 °C above the pre-industrial level. In our simulations a one-time removal of all anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere reduces surface air temperature by 0.8 °C within a few years, but 1 °C surface warming above pre-industrial levels lasts for several centuries. In other words, a one-time removal of 100% excess CO2 from the atmosphere offsets less than 50% of the warming experienced at the time of removal. To maintain atmospheric CO2 and temperature at low levels, not only does anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere need to be removed, but anthropogenic CO2 stored in the ocean and land needs to be removed as well when it outgasses to the atmosphere. In our simulation to maintain atmospheric CO2 concentrations at pre-industrial levels for centuries, an additional amount of CO2 equal to the original CO2 captured would need to be removed over the subsequent 80 years.

Abstract:A lot of research on international convention-controlled halogenated gases (CHGs) has been carried out. However, few bibliometric analyses and literature reviews exist in this field. Based on 734 articles extracted from the Science Citation Index (SCI) Expanded database of the Web of Science, we provided the visualisation for the performance of contributors and trends in research content by using VOSviewer and Science of Science (Sci2). The results showed that the United States was the most productive country, followed by the United Kingdom and China. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had the largest number of publications, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Bristol. In terms of disciplines, environmental science and meteorological and atmospheric science have contributed the most. By using cluster analysis of all keywords, four key research topics of CHGs were identified and reviewed: (1) emissions calculation, (2) physicochemical analysis of halocarbons, (3) evaluation of replacements, and (4) environmental impact. The change in research substances is closely related to the phase-out schedule of the Montreal Protocol. In terms of environmental impact, global warming has always been the most important research hotspot, whereas research on ozone-depleting substances and biological toxicity shows a gradually rising trend.

Abstract:To project possible future climate change, it is important to understand Earth system response to CO2 removal, a potential key method to limit global warming. Previous studies examined some aspects of Earth system response to different scenarios of CO2 removal, but lacked a systematic analysis of the carbon cycle and climate system response in a consistent modeling framework. We expanded previous studies by using an Earth system model to examine the response of land and ocean carbon cycle, as well as a set of climate variables to idealized scenarios of atmospheric CO2 removal with different removal rates. In the scenarios considered, atmospheric CO2 increases at a rate of 1% per year to four times of its preindustrial level, and then decreases at a rate of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% per year to the preindustrial level. Simulation results show that a reduction of atmospheric CO2 induces CO2 release from both the ocean and terrestrial biosphere, and to keep atmospheric CO2 at a lower level requires the removal of anthropogenic CO2 not only from the atmosphere, but from the ocean and land carbon reservoirs as well. The response of many variables of the Earth system, including temperature, ocean heat content, sea level, deep ocean acidity, and permafrost area and carbon, lags the decrease in atmospheric CO2 ranging from a few years to many centuries. A few centuries after atmospheric CO2 returns to the preindustrial level, sea level is still substantially higher than the preindustrial level, and permafrost continues losing CO2 to the atmosphere. Our study demonstrates that to offset previous positive CO2 emissions by atmospheric CO2 removal does not mean to offset climate consequence of positive CO2 emissions. Rapid and deep reduction in CO2 emissions is key to prevent and limit increasing risks from further warming. Our study provides new insights into the carbon cycle and climate system response to CO2 removal, which would help to assess future climate change and the associated impacts.

Abstract:The question whether climate changes, on timescales shorter than say several thousand years, at all can take place has not until comparatively recently been carefully considered. The question is related to the accelerating increase in the so-called greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs and to what extent and how fast this increase is likely to lead to climate changes. It is indeed of considerable interest that a few gases, preferably water vapour and carbon dioxide which exist in quite small concentrations, carbon dioxide only little more than 0.03%, are absolutely crucial to life on our planet since only due to their ability to efficiently absorb terrestrial radiation the average surface temperature of the earth is increased by 33°C or from −18°C to +15°C. The most common gases of our atmosphere, oxygen and nitrogen, which take up more than 99% of the total volume, are almost completely transparent to both the radiation from the sun and the terrestrial radiation. The first attempt to estimate the effect of atmospheric greenhouse gases on climate was made by the Swedish physicist Arrhenius (1896). Arrhenius undertook a careful examination of available measurements concerning the absorption of terrestrial radiation in the atmosphere and was able, on the basis of these measurements, to correctly quantify the role of carbon dioxide and water vapour. By making use of a simple energy balance model he also calculated the change in the surface temperature which would result in an increase respectively a decrease in the atmospheric concentration of CO2 including the feedback from water vapour.

Abstract:Gaseous and aerosol air pollution imposes substantial radiative forcing on the climate system. Atmospheric transport of pollutants result in regional and global radiative forcing. Pollutants are byproducts of economic production to supply consumption, and the enormous volume of economic trade has meant substantial embedded transfer of pollution from consuming to producing regions and resulting geographical re-distribution of pollution. Atmospheric transport, economic trade and their coupling leads to the grand problem of globalizing air pollution that affects the regional and global climate. Abstract:Terrestrial uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) partially mitigates global climate change induced by anthropogenic greenhouse (GHG) emissions. However, warming from increasing biogenic emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) resulting from human activities may negate the cooling effect of CO2 uptake by the terrestrial biosphere. Terrestrial fluxes of individual GHGs have been studied intensively, but the net balance of the three major GHGs (CO2, CH4 and N2O) remains uncertain. Here we use bottom-up (BU: eg, inventory, statistical extrapolation of local flux measurements, process-based modeling) and top-down (TD: atmospheric inversions) approaches to quantify net terrestrial biogenic fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O from natural ecosystems, croplands, and other biogenic sectors. Abstract:In the face of climate change and global warming caused by the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels, carbon capture technologies become pivotal for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide. Among these carbon capture technologies, post-combustion capture has gained widespread application. In this article, the absorption and adsorption methods in post-combustion carbon capture technology, including the mechanism of the chemical and physical aspects of both methods as well as the absorbents and adsorbent materials used in them, will be specifically introduced. Moreover, the current and potential applications in the field of emissions reduction are also elaborated. These post-combustion carbon capture methods are expected to reduce environmental harm while maintaining energy efficiency, providing an effective solution to the problem of global warming.

Abstract:Concentrations of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, tropospheric ozone, nitrous oxide, and methane are rising rapidly. These gases have already raised the average temperature of the Earth by between 0.5 and 0.9 degrees C over the last century. This rapid warming of the planet will lead to climatic instability that could disrupt precipitation and agricultural patterns, shift the location of deserts, collapse ecological systems, increase the probability and severity of droughts, hurricanes, and floods, and raise the level of the worlds oceans. Some of these impacts are likely to fall on nations least able to respond to devastating political and economic impacts: Unfortunately, past emissions of these gases have already committed us to significant climate change and a further expected warming of around 0.5 deg. C.

Anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) contribute most to global warming. Soil is a major source and sink of GHGs. Here, the impact of soil chemistry, including soil organic matter, pH and nutrients on CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions and the feedbacks of climate change, including warming, drying, precipitation and wildfires on soil chemistry are discussed.

Abstract:Climate change has become a worldwide concern with the rapid rise of the atmospheric Co2 concentration. To mitigate Co2 emissions, the research and development efforts in Co2 capture and separation both from the stationary sources with high Co2 concentrations (e.g., coal-fired power plant flue gas) and directly from the atmosphere have grown significantly. Much progress has been achieved, especially within the last twenty years. In this perspective, we first briefly review the current status of carbon capture technologies including absorption, adsorption, membrane, biological capture, and cryogenic separation, and compare their advantages and disadvantages. Then, we focus mainly on the recent advances in the absorption, adsorption, and membrane technologies. Even though numerous optimizations in materials and processes have been pursued, implementing a single separation process is still quite energy-intensive or costly. To address the challenges, we provide our perspectives on future directions of Co2 capture research and development, that is, the combination of flue gas recycling and hybrid capture system, and one-step integrated Co2 capture and conversion system, as they have the potential to overcome the technical bottlenecks of single capture technologies, offering significant improvement in energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:Climate change and its social, environmental, economic and ethical consequences are widely recognized as the major set of interconnected problems facing human societies. Its impacts and costs will be large, serious, and unevenly spread, globally for decades. The main factor causing climate change and global warming is the increase of global carbon emissions produced by human activities such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. In this special volume, the articles mainly focus on investigations of technical innovations and policy interventions for improved energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction in a wide diversity of industrial, construction and agricultural sectors at different scales, from the smallest scales (firm or household), cities, regional, to national and global scales. Some articles in this special volume assess alternative carbon emissions reduction approaches, such as carbon capture and storage and geoengineering schemes. Given the high cost and internal/external uncertainties of carbon capture and storage and risks and side effects of various geoengineering schemes, improved energy efficiency and widespread implementation of low fossil-carbon renewable-energy based systems are clearly the most direct and effective approaches to reduce carbon emissions. This means that we have to radically transform our societal metabolism towards low/no fossil-carbon economies. However, design and implementation of low/no fossil-carbon production will require fundamental changes in the design, production and use of products and these needed changes are evolving but much more needs to be done. Additionally, the design and timing of suitable climate policy interventions, such as various carbon taxation/trading schemes, must be integral in facilitating the development of low fossil carbon products and accelerating the transition to post-fossil carbon societies.
