Abstract:By analyzing the affine Taylor expansion of a non-degenerate plane curve, we obtain characterizations of classes of such curves via curvature properties of the gravity curve. The proof is based on an analysis of the degree parity and leading coefficients of polynomials occurring in the expansion.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Algebraic curves/surfaces are typical implicit curves/surfaces. They are used widely in CAD and computer graphics. For example, quadratic curve and quadric surface are used as primitive element in most modeling/CAD system. The implicit formulae for computing the intrinsic geometric invariant——Gaussian and mean curvature of an implicit surface are derived in the first part of this paper. The formulae for them are represented by determinant(s) over a simple term, the elements in which are all the derivatives of order one or two of the surface function. The intrinsic geometric invariant is used to study the geometric continuity between two implicit surfaces and the G 2 continuity conditions for two surfaces along their adjacent bound are derived in the second part of the paper. A G 2 blending surface between two given algebraic surfaces are constructed with Gaussian and mean curvature continuity in the last part of the paper, the blending surface itself is also algebraic surface with minimum order.

Abstract:For quadratic curves over $F_p$, the number of solutions, which is governed by an analogue of the Mordell-Weil group, is expressed with the Legendre symbol of a coefficient of quadratic curves. Focusing on the number of solutions, a quadratic curve analogue of the modular form in the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is proposed. This modular form yields the Gaussian sum and also possesses some modular transformation structure.

Abstract:Quadratic invariant curve is one of the simplest nonlinear invariant curves and was considered by C. T. Ng and the author in order to study the one-dimensional nonlinear dynamics displayed by a second order delay differential equation with piecewise constant argument. In this paper a functional equation derived from the problem of invariant curves is discussed. Using a different method from what C. T. Ng and the author once used, we define solutions piecewisely and give results in the remaining difficult case left in C. T. Ng and the authors work. A problem of analytic extension given in their work is also answered negatively.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Abstract:We generalize a previous result by Fabricius-Bjerre from curves in $\mathbb R^2$ to curves in $\mathbb R P^2$. Applied to the case of real algebraic curves, this recovers the signed count of bitangents of quartics introduced by Larson-Vogt and proves its positivity, conjectured by Larson-Vogt. Our method is not specific to quartics and applies to algebraic curves of any degree.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, over the complex numbers, of the form x 1 x 4 − x 2 x 3 = constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: (a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, (b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and (c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on C 4 preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let $f\in W^{3,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\Omega)$ be a function defined on a connected open subset $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb R^2$. We will show that its graph is contained in a quadratic surface if and only if $f$ is a weak solution to a certain system of \nth{3} order partial differential equations unless the Hessian determinant of $f$ is non-positive on the whole $\Omega$. Moreover, we will prove that the system is in some sense the simplest possible in a wide class of differential equations, which will lead to the classification of all polynomial partial differential equations satisfied by parametrizations of generic quadratic surfaces. Although we will mainly use the tools of linear and commutative algebra, the theorem itself is also somehow related to holomorphic functions.

Quadratic Euler Characteristic of Symmetric Powers of Curves

Abstract:We compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a smooth, projective curve over any field $k$ that is not of characteristic two, using the Motivic Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of Levine-Raksit. As an application, we show over a field of characteristic zero that the power structure on the Grothendieck-Witt ring introduced by Pajwani-Pál computes the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers for all curves.

Abstract:Orthogonal spaces are vector spaces together with a quadratic form whose associated bilinear form is non-degenerate. Over fields of characteristic two, there are many quadratic forms associated to a given bilinear form and quadratic geometries are structures that encode a vector space over a field of characteristic 2 with a non-degenerate bilinear form together with a space of associated quadratic forms. These structures over finite fields of characteristic 2 form an important part of the basic geometries that appear in the Lie coordinatizable structures of Cherlin and Hrushovski. We (a) describe the respective model companions of the theory of orthogonal spaces and the theory of quadratic geometries and (b) classify the pseudo-finite completions of these theories. We also (c) give a neostability-theoretic classification of the model companions and these pseudo-finite completions. This is a small step towards understanding the analogue of the Cherlin-Hrushovski theory of Lie coordinatizable structures in a setting where the involved fields may be pseudo-finite.

Abstract:A planar mapping was derived from a second order delay differential equation with a piecewise constant argument. Invariant curves for the planar mapping reflects on the dynamics of the differential equation. Results were reported on a planar mapping admitting quadratic invariant curves y=x 2+C, except for the case -3/4≥C≤0. This remaining case is now resolved, and we describe the solutions of the functional equation K(x 2+C)+k(x)=x by iterations of y.

Abstract:We extend some parts of the representation theory for integral quadratic forms over the ring of integers of a number field to the case over the coordinate ring $k[C]$ of an affine curve $C$ over a general base field $k$. By using the genus theory, we link the strong approximation property of certain spin groups to the Hasse principle for representations of integral quadratic forms over $k[C]$ and derive several applications. In particular, we give an example where a spin group does not satisfy strong approximation.
