Abstract:A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested. A two-dimensional photonic crystal with a triangle lattice of elliptic air cylinders, which are filled with the EIT atomic vapor, in the KAs background material is designed. By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable bandgap structure that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions (e.g. the intensity of the control field) . It is shown that a large complete bandgap of about 0.0503ω e in the region of high normalized frequency could be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the spontaneous decay rate, dephasing rate, Rabi frequency of control light, atomic number density as well as elliptic geometric parameters.
Time-dependent Physical Response During Photorefractive Grating Formation at Large Modulation

Abstract:The physical response of photorefractive materials under inhomogeneous illumination is well described by using material equations. Usual solutions to material equations are based on the assumption that the light modulation is small enough to linearize the equations. However, large light modulation, the presence of applied electric field and short time pulses are always required in many applications. A few analytical approaches and numerical solutions are developed for large light modulation. But certain simplifications are applied to the set of material equations and large computational effort is required. In this paper we present a numerical approach based on method of lines for simulating the photorefractive kinetics at high light modulation with an applied electric field. No approximations are made during the simulation and less effort is required during computation. We use different values of light modulation and applied electric field to present the numerical results. Time-space distribution of the carrier density and the space charge field, field amplitude evolution are obtained. Compared to the results under the small light modulation approximation, this method helps to understand the dynamics of photorefractive grating formation at high light modulation. A comparison is also made between the coupling coefficient obtained by this numerical method and that by analytical expressions.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optoacoustic cooling via stimulated Brillouin-Mandelstam scattering in a 50 cm long tapered photonic crystal fiber. For a 7.38 GHz acoustic mode, a cooling rate of 219 K from room temperature has been achieved. As anti-Stokes and Stokes Brillouin processes naturally break the symmetry of phonon cooling and heating, resolved sideband schemes are not necessary. A Sunlight-pumped Two-dimensional Thermalized Photon Gas

Abstract:The Liouville theorem states that the phase-space volume of an ensemble in a closed system remains constant. While gases of material particles can efficiently be cooled by sympathetic or laser cooling techniques, allowing for large phase-space compression, for light both the absence of an internal structure, as well as the usual non-conservation of particle number upon contact to matter imposes fundamental limits e.g. in fluorescence-based light concentrators in three-dimensional systems. A different physical situation can in principle be expected for dye-solution filled microcavities with a mirror spacing in the wavelength range, where low dimensional photon gases with non-vanishing, freely tunable chemical potential have been experimentally realized. Motivated by the goal to observe phase-space compression of sunlight by cooling the captured radiation to room temperature, we in this work theoretically show that in a lossless system the phase space volume scales as $(\Delta x \Delta p / T)^d = \mathrm{constant}$, where $\Delta x$ and $\Delta p$ denote the rms position and momentum spread and $d$ the dimensionality of the system ($d=1$ or $2$). We also experimentally realize a sunlight pumped dye microcavity, and demonstrate thermalization of scattered sunlight to a two-dimensional room temperature ensemble with non-vanishing chemical potential. Prospects of phase space buildup of light by cooling, as can be feasible in systems with a two- or three-dimensional band gap, can range from quantum state preparation in tailored potentials up to technical applications in diffuse sunlight collection.

Abstract:A kind of photonic crystal structure with modulation of the refractive index is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for exploiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The combination of EIT with periodically modulated refractive index medium gives rise to high efficiency reflection as well as forbidden transmission in a three-level atomic system coupled by standing wave. We show an accurate theoretical simulation via transfer-matrix theory, automatically accounting for multilayer reflections, thus fully demonstrate the existence of photonic crystal structure in atomic vapor.
Refractive Index-Based Control of Hyperbolic Phonon-Polariton Propagation

Abstract:Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are generated when infrared photons couple to polar optic phonons in anisotropic media, confining long-wavelength light to nanoscale volumes. However, to realize the full potential of HPhPs for infrared optics, it is crucial to understand propagation and loss mechanisms on substrates suitable for applications from waveguiding to infrared sensing. We employ scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with analytical and numerical calculations, to elucidate HPhP characteristics as a function of the complex substrate dielectric function. We consider propagation on suspended, dielectric and metallic substrates to demonstrate that the thickness-normalized wavevector can be reduced by a factor of 25 simply by changing the substrate from dielectric to metallic behavior. Moreover, by incorporating the imaginary contribution to the dielectric function in lossy materials, the wavevector can be dynamically controlled by small local variations in loss or carrier density. Counterintuitively, higher-order HPhP modes are shown to exhibit the same change in the polariton wavevector as the fundamental mode, despite the drastic differences in the evanescent ranges of these polaritons. However, because polariton refraction is dictated by the fractional change in the wavevector, this still results in significant differences in polariton refraction and reduced sensitivity to substrate-induced losses for the higher-order HPhPs. Such effects may therefore be used to spatially separate hyperbolic modes of different orders and for index-based sensing schemes. Our results advance our understanding of fundamental hyperbolic polariton excitations and their potential for on-chip photonics and planar metasurface optics.
Evaporative Cooling of a Photon Fluid to Quantum Degeneracy

Abstract:We demonstrate that the process of evaporative cooling, as associated with the cooling of atomic gases, can also be employed to condense a system of photons giving rise to coherent properties of the light. The system we study consists of photons in a high-quality Fabry-Perot cavity with photon interactions mediated by a nonlinear atomic medium. We predict a macroscopic occupation of the lowest energy mode and evaluate the conditions for realizing a narrow spectral width indicative of a long coherence time for the field.

Abstract:The dielectric crystal with the index of refraction n is inserted in the Planck blackbody. The spectral formula for photons in such dielectric medium is derived with the equation for the temperature of internal photons. The derived equation is solved for the constant index of refraction. Abstract:The transmission properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing two kinds of single-negative (permittivity- or permeability-negative) media are studied theoretically. We show that this structure can possess a type of photonic gap with zero effective phase (phi(eff)). The zero- phi(eff) gap distinguishes itself from a Bragg gap in that it is invariant with a change of scale length and is insensitive to thickness fluctuation. In contrast to a photonic gap corresponding to zero averaged refractive index, the zero- phi(eff) gap can be made very wide by varying the ratio of the thicknesses of two media. An equivalent transmission-line model is utilized to explain the properties. A photonic quantum-well structure based on zero- phi(eff) gaps is proposed as a multiple channeled filter that is compact and robust against disorder.

Abstract:We study the propagation properties of an Airy beam through a four-level electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) atomic vapor. The analytical expression for the Airy beam passing through the ABCD optical system of the EIT vapor is deduced and employed to analyze the propagation characteristics of the beam. It is shown that both the deflection position and the intensity of the Airy beam can be modulated by the Rabi frequency of the control light. Such a tunable optical behavior may have some potential applications in medicine science.

Abstract:We show that the momentum of light can be reversed via the atomic coherence created by another light with one or two orders of magnitude lower frequency. Both the backward retrieval of single photons from a timed Dicke state and the reflection of continuous waves by high-order photonic band gaps are analyzed. The required control field strength scales linearly with the nonlinearity order, which is explained by the dynamics of superradiance lattices. Experiments are proposed with Rb-85 atoms and Be2+ ions. This holds promise for light-controllable x-ray reflectors.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of a novel scheme for optical cooling of particles that does not in principle require a closed optical transition. A tightly confined laser beam interacting with a trapped particle experiences a phase shift, which upon reflection from a mirror or resonant microstructure produces a time-delayed optical potential for the particle. This leads to a nonconservative force and friction. A quantum model of the system is presented and analyzed in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:The Doppler effect of relative motion-induced frequency shift as an interesting fundamental wave phenomenon draws significant research interest in many applied aspects of physics and engineering. Photonic settings represent an important class of platforms to observe and manipulate this effect. Here, an anomalous Doppler effect via dynamic index tuning in a photonic crystal (PhC) is proposed and investigated theoretically by considering the guided reflection of light from a moving front at near the speed of light. A virtual waveguide constructed in a square lattice PhC slab utilizing the self-collimation effect is proposed, and the moving equivalent reflector is realized by photonic band shift induced by a pump light for changing the refractive index dynamically. The anomalous Doppler shift occurs at multiple wavelengths, which depends on the Bloch nature of this photonic crystal and its band structure. Moreover, another kind of small spectral shift caused by adiabatic wavelength conversion is also observed. This nonstationary procedure is studied combining the full-wave numerical simulation and wavelet transform analysis. This work sheds light on the emergence of anomalous Doppler effect and wavelength conversion via dynamic index tuning in photonic crystals and can be important for manipulating such effects in practical photonic devices.

Abstract:It is shown, for the first time, that the Zitterbewegung of photons can appear near the Dirac point in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. The superiority of such a phenomenon for photons is that it can be found in different scaling structures with wide frequency regions. It can be observed by measuring the time dependence of the transmission coefficient through photonic crystal slabs. Thus, it is particularly suited for experimentally observing this effect. We have observed such a phenomenon by exact numerical simulations, confirming a long-standing theoretical prediction.

Thermal radiation forces on planar structures with asymmetric optical response

Abstract:Light carries momentum and, upon interaction with material structures, can exert forces on them. Here, we show that a planar structure with asymmetric optical response is spontaneously accelerated when placed in an environment at a different temperature. This phenomenon originates from the imbalance in the exchange rates of photons between both sides of the structure and the environment. Using a simple theoretical model, we calculate the force acting on the planar structure and its terminal velocity in vacuum, and analyze their dependence on the initial temperature and the geometrical properties of the system for different realistic materials. Our results unravel an alternative approach to manipulating objects in the nano and microscale that does not require an external source of radiation.
