Abstract:We show that a grating amplitude stationary in space but oscillating in time can be accurately modelled as a set of independent gratings travelling in opposite directions, interacting almost exclusively with waves travelling in the same direction. This structure reproduces the key features of travelling gratings: amplification of a wave at points where the local wave speed equals the grating velocity. The same field compression and photon production is evident when even a single Fourier component of the grating profile has a velocity that matches the local wave speed. We speculate that these stationary but oscillating gratings may prove easier to realise experimentally than travelling gratings.

Abstract:Abstract We ask the question “what happens to Bloch waves in gratings synthetically moving at near the speed of light?”. First we define a constant refractive index (CRI) model in which Bloch waves remain well defined as they break the light barrier, then show their dispersion rotating through 360° from negative to positive and back again. Next we introduce the effective medium approximation (EMA) then refine it into a 4-wave model which proves to be highly accurate. Finally using the Bloch waves to expand a pulse of light we demonstrate sudden inflation of pulse amplitude combined with reversal of propagation direction as a luminal grating is turned on.

Abstract:Diffraction gratings synthetically moving at trans-luminal velocities contain points where wave and grating velocities are equal. We show these points can be understood as a series of optical event horizons where wave energy can be trapped and amplified, leading to radiation from the quantum vacuum state. We calculate the spectrum of this emitted radiation, finding a quasi-thermal spectrum with features that depend on the grating profile, and an effective temperature that scales exponentially with the length of the grating, emitting a measurable flux even for very small grating contrast.

Abstract:In gratings travelling at nearly the velocity of light a symmetry breaking transition is observed between free-flowing fluid-like Bloch waves observed at lower grating velocities and, at luminal velocities, condensed, localised states of light captured in each period of the grating and locked to its velocity. We introduce a new technique for calculating in this regime and use it to study the transition in detail shedding light on the critical exponents, and the periodic oscillations in transmitted intensity seen in the pre-transition regime.

Abstract:The underlying mechanism of the stationary light pulse (SLP) was identified as a band gap being created by a Bragg grating formed by two counter-propagating coupling fields of similar wavelength. Here we present a more general view of the formation of SLPs, namely several balanced four-wave mixing processes sharing the same ground-state coherence. Utilizing this new concept we report the first experimental observation of a bichromatic SLP at wavelengths for which no Bragg grating can be established. We also demonstrate the production of a SLP directly from a propagating light pulse without prior storage. Being easily controlled externally makes SLPs a very versatile tool for low-light-level nonlinear optics and quantum information manipulation.

Abstract:It is now well-established that photonic systems can exhibit topological energy bands; similar to their electronic counterparts, this leads to the formation of chiral edge modes which can be used to transmit light in a manner that is protected against back-scattering. While it is understood how classical signals can propagate under these conditions, it is an outstanding important question how the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field get modified in the presence of a topological band structure. We address this challenge by exploring a setting where a non-zero topological invariant guarantees the presence of a parametrically-unstable chiral edge mode in a system with boundaries, even though there are no bulk-mode instabilities. We show that one can exploit this to realize a topologically protected, quantum-limited travelling-wave parametric amplifier. The device is naturally protected both against internal losses and back-scattering; the latter feature is in stark contrast to standard travelling wave amplifiers. This adds a new example to the list of potential quantum devices that profit from topological transport.
Experimental realization of transverse mode conversion using optically induced transient long-period gratings

Abstract:We present the experimental realization of transverse mode conversion in an optical fiber via an optically induced long-period grating. The transient gratings are generated by femtosecond laser pulses, exploiting the Kerr effect to translate intensity patterns emerging from multimode interference into a spatial refractive index modulation. Since these modulations exist only while the pump beam is present, they can be used for optical switching of transverse modes. As only a localized part of the grating was written at a time and the probe beam was co-propagating with the pump beam the required pulse energies could be reduced to 120\,nJ which is about a factor of 600 lower than in previous quasi-continuous-wave experiments. Accompanying numerical simulations allow a better understanding of the involved effects and show excellent agreement to the experimental results.
Quantum Frequency Translation of Single-Photon States in Photonic Crystal Fiber

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate frequency translation of a nonclassical optical field via the Bragg scattering four-wave mixing process in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The high nonlinearity and the ability to control dispersion in PCF enable efficient translation between photon channels within the visible to-near-infrared spectral range, useful in quantum networks. Heralded single photons at 683 nm were translated to 659 nm with an efficiency of $28.6 \pm 2.2$ percent. Second-order correlation measurements on the 683-nm and 659-nm fields yielded $g^{(2)}_{683}(0) = 0.21 \pm 0.02$ and $g^{(2)}_{659}(0) = 0.19 \pm 0.05$ respectively, showing the nonclassical nature of both fields.

Abrupt X-to-O-wave structural field transition in presence of anomalous dispersion

Abstract:All linear, propagation-invariant, paraxial pulsed beams are spatiotemporally X-shaped (conical waves) in absence of group-velocity dispersion (GVD), or in presence of normal GVD. It is known, however, that such conical waves become O-shaped in presence of anomalous GVD, resulting in a field profile that is circularly symmetric in space and time. To date, experiments generating conical waves in which the wavelength of a high-energy pump laser is tuned across the zero-dispersion wavelength of a nonlinear medium have not revealed the expected X-to-O-wave structural field transition. We report here unambiguous observation of a fixed-wavelength X-to-O-wave structural field transition occurring in linear dispersion-free wave packets in the anomalous GVD regime -- without needing to change the sign or magnitude of the GVD. Instead, by tuning the group velocity of a space-time wave packet (STWP) across a threshold value that we call the `escape velocity', we observe an abrupt transition in the STWP from an O-shaped to an X-shaped spatiotemporal profile. This transition is associated with an abrupt change in the associated spatiotemporal spectrum of the STWP: from closed elliptical spatiotemporal spectra below the escape velocity to open hyperbolic spectra above it. These results may furnish new opportunities for engineering the phase-matching conditions in nonlinear and quantum optics.

Abstract:Scattering of femtosecond laser pulses on resonant transmission and reflection gratings made of dispersive (Drude metals) and dielectric materials is studied by a time-domain numerical algorithm for Maxwell's theory of linear passive (dispersive and absorbing) media. The algorithm is based on the Hamiltonian formalism in the framework of which Maxwell's equations for passive media are shown to be equivalent to the first-order equation, $\partial \Psi/\partial t = {\cal H}\Psi$, where ${\cal H}$ is a linear differential operator (Hamiltonian) acting on a multi-dimensional vector $\Psi$ built of the electromagnetic inductions and auxiliary matter fields describing the medium response. The initial value problem is then solved by means of a modified time leapfrog method in combination with the Fourier pseudospectral method applied on a non-uniform grid that is constructed by a change of variables and designed to enhance the sampling efficiency near medium interfaces. The algorithm is shown to be highly accurate at relatively low computational costs. An excellent agreement with previous theoretical and experimental studies of the gratings is demonstrated by numerical simulations using our algorithm. In addition, our algorithm allows one to see real time dynamics of long leaving resonant excitations of electromagnetic fields in the gratings in the entire frequency range of the initial wide band wave packet as well as formation of the reflected and transmitted wave fronts.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity in space-time modulated photonic crystals has been investigated in the context of nonreciprocal propagation and polarization. Here, we investigate a reconfigurable nonreciprocal wave growth in space-time modulated crystals. Imposing an adaptable progressive phase shift between successive time-modulated cells results in blue and red shifts of the forward and backward momentum band gaps around the typical 0.5 growth normalized frequency. We applied this spatiotemporal scheme to engineering the dispersion relation of a loaded transmission line$-$a 1D periodic structure$-$in the microwave regime.

Abstract:In this paper we show how transmission metallic gratings with very narrow and deep enough slits can exhibit transmission resonances for wavelengths larger than the period of the grating. By using a transfer matrix formalism and a quasi-analytical model based on a modal expansion, we show that there are two possible ways of transferring light from the upper surface to the lower one: by the excitation of coupled surface plasmon polaritons on both surfaces of the metallic grating or by the coupling of incident plane waves with waveguide resonances located in the slits. Both mechanisms can lead to almost perfect transmittance for those particular resonances.

Transformation and amplification of light modulated by a traveling wave with a relatively low frequency

Abstract:The behavior of electromagnetic waves in a medium modulated in time and space, largely investigated decades ago, has recently attracted renewed interest. Here, we solve an intriguing problem of this research: can light with an initial frequency $\omega_0$ be amplified in a realistic photonic circuit solely pumped by a traveling wave with a much lower frequency $\omega_p \ll \omega_0$? Generally, the bandwidth of the modulation-induced optical frequency comb spectrum can be substantially broadened when the phase velocity of the traveling wave, $v_p$, approaches the phase velocity of light, $v_0$. However, in realistic photonic waveguides, the amplification effect remains small due to the unfeasible modulation and waveguide parameters required. In contrast, we demonstrate that modulating an optical resonator with a traveling wave that has a small phase velocity $v_p \ll v_0$ (rather than a synchronous $v_p \approx v_0$) can result in narrow-band light amplification, which is dramatically enhanced near the Brillouin phase-matching condition $\omega_p/v_p \approx 2\omega_0/v_0$. Our calculations show that the proposed amplifier of light can be realized in a lithium niobate racetrack resonator with millimeter-scale perimeter modulated by a surface acoustic wave with surprisingly small and practically achievable amplitude.

Abstract:In order to confine waves beyond the diffraction limit, advances in fabrication techniques have enabled subwavelength structuring of matter, achieving near-field control of light and other types of waves. The price is often expensive fabrication needs and the irreversibility of device functionality, as well as the introduction of impurities, a major contributor to losses. In this Letter, we propose temporal inhomogeneities, such as a periodic drive in the electromagnetic properties of a surface which supports guided modes, as an alternative route for the coupling of propagating waves to evanescent modes across the light line, thus circumventing the need for subwavelength fabrication, and achieving the temporal counterpart of the classical Wood anomaly. We show analytically and numerically how this concept is valid for any material platform and at any frequency, and propose and model a realistic experiment in graphene to couple terahertz radiation to plasmons with unit efficiency, demonstrating that time modulation of material properties could be a tunable, lower-loss and fast-switchable alternative to the subwavelength structuring of matter for near-field wave control.

Abstract:We consider the spectral response of moving diffraction gratings, in which the incident light extends over a broad angular range and where the diffracted light is observed from a specific angle. We show that the dispersion relation between the frequency perceived by an observer who is looking at a moving grating and the incident frequency can exhibit some unique features, such as a flat band (i.e., a local minimum). An observer can see the light diffracted into a non-specular diffraction order from a multitude of incident light rays and the angle of incidence of each ray is frequency-dependent, as a consequence, when the grating is moving, each incident ray experiences a Doppler shift in frequency that depends on its angle of incidence. We find that remarkable features appear near a Wood anomaly where the angle of incidence, for a given diffraction angle, can change very quickly with frequency. This means that light of multiple frequencies and incident from multiple angles can be mixed by the motion of the grating into the same diffracted ray and their frequencies can be compressed into a narrower range. The existence of a flat band means that a moving grating can be used as a device to increase the intensity of the perceived diffracted light due to spectral compression. The properties of a grating in motion in sunlight can also be relevant to the study of naturally occurring gratings which are typically in oscillatory motion.

Abstract:We present a quantum manipulation of a traveling light pulse using double atomic coherence for two-color stationary light and quantum frequency conversion. The quantum frequency conversion rate of the traveling light achieved by the two-color stationary light phenomenon is near unity. We theoretically discuss the two-color stationary light for the frequency conversion process in terms of pulse area, energy transfer and propagation directions. The resulting process may apply the coherent interactions of a weak field to nonlinear quantum optics such as quantum nondemolition measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear pulse propagation in long-period fiber gratings. We derive nonlinear coupled mode equations for co-propagating core and cladding modes in a long-period fiber grating and show that the intensity dependent index can be used to tune the mode coupling, thereby creating a mechanism for pulseshaping and all-optical switching. Extensive numerical simulations, which describe the nonlinear pulse dynamics, are compared with experiments. We discuss the application of these nonlinear effects to signal processing in all-optical fiber communications.

Abstract:In a fixed spectral range, single- and half-cycle electromagnetic pulses have the shortest duration. Half-cycle pulses are promising tools for ultrafast control of quantum systems. Previously, the possibility of using a sequence of single- and half-cycle attosecond pulses to generate and ultrafast control light-induced population difference gratings has been demonstrated. However, such studies have been carried out using different approximations, such as the sudden perturbation theory and the two-level model for the resonant medium. In this paper, based on the numerical solution of constitutive equations for elements of the density matrix and wave equation it is shown that it is possible to generate and control population gratings in a three-level medium without using the approximation of sudden perturbations used in previous studies. It is shown that taking into account the additional level of the medium does not lead to a violation of the effect of generating such gratings. This extends the applicability of previous results.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum have recently been utilized in photonic crystal gratings to achieve strong coupling and ultralow threshold condensation of exciton–polariton quasiparticles with atypical Dirac-like features in their dispersion relation. Here, we develop the single- and many-body theory of these new effective relativistic polaritonic modes and describe their mean-field condensation dynamics facilitated by the interplay between protection from the radiative continuum and negative-mass optical trapping. Our theory accounts for tunable grating parameters giving full control over the diffractive coupling properties between guided polaritons and the radiative continuum, unexplored for polariton condensates. In particular, we discover stable cyclical condensate solutions mimicking a driven-dissipative analog of the zitterbewegung effect characterized by coherent superposition of ballistic and trapped polariton waves. We clarify important distinctions between the polariton nearfield and farfield explaining recent experiments on the emission characteristics of these long lived nonlinear Dirac polaritons.
