Abstract:Based on frozen soil creep tests, yield stress limit is approximately determined by means of experimental tautochrone at first. Then several visco-elastic and visco-elasto-plastic Theological models are established. The model parameter are feed back by the non-linear least square method. A fuzzy optimization model is developed under the principle of simplicity and accuracy. As a result, the optimal model is Burgers model under the lower stress level or H-H/N/S model under the higher stress level.

Abstract:Fuzzy system is put forward for identification of geo-material constitutive model.According to the choracteristics of geotechnical materials,the author designs the fuzzy system′s input and output variables,its structural parameters and the corresponding algorithm.Then the fuzzy system is designed using gradient descent method.Based on those,the author elaborates the modeling ideology on constitutive model using fuzzy system,and also puts forward views on the appliance of other areas in geotechnical engineering.Then,the constitutive model of rockfill material in increase path is simulated.After comparing with the experimental value,the results show that the fuzzy system′s simulation of constitutive model in increase path has obtained good results.The simulated curve of gradient descent method is relatively smooth and its approximation capabilities and generalization improves significantly.Not only is the simulation approximate to test results,but also its e-(p,q) surfaces are smooth,showing no over-fitting phenomenon.

Abstract:A plain concrete pile was constructed to improve the soft soil for road bed and the construction garbage was used as the fill of subgrade. Deformation monitoring surveys were conducted and measurements of stresses were carried out throughout the construction process of filling subgrade. In order to determine design parameters for the construction garbage as fill, the soil-pile interaction was back analyzed using the finite element method. This paper describes the process of selection of material parameters through careful assessment of the laboratory data and the results of the numerical back analyses. Once selected, the parameters were verified on the other cross section of road and later used in routine design. Generally, a good agreement between predicted and observed behavior was achieved suggesting the adequate determination of the geotechnical model and the parameters of construction garbage.

Abstract:A comparative study of optimization techniques for identifying soil parameters in geotechnical engineering was first presented. The identification methodology with its 3 main parts, error function, search strategy, and identification procedure, was introduced and summarized. Then, current optimization methods were reviewed and classified into 3 categories with an introduction to their basic principles and applications in geotechnical engineering. A comparative study on the identification of model parameters from a synthetic pressuremeter and an excavation tests was then performed by using 5 among the mostly common optimization methods, including genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing, the differential evolution algorithm and the artificial bee colony algorithm. The results demonstrated that the differential evolution had the strongest search ability but the slowest convergence speed. All the selected methods could reach approximate solutions with very small objective errors, but these solutions were different from the preset parameters. To improve the identification performance, an enhanced algorithm was developed by implementing the Nelder‐Mead simplex method in a differential algorithm to accelerate the convergence speed with strong reliable search ability. The performance of the enhanced optimization algorithm was finally highlighted by identifying the Mohr‐Coulomb parameters from the 2 same synthetic cases and from 2 real pressuremeter tests in sand, and ANICREEP parameters from 2 real pressuremeter tests in soft clay.

Abstract:Based on the data of the soil and enclosure structure of a certain excavation, a PLAXIS model was established. The actual monitoring results are compared with the PLAXIS calculation results to verify the reliability of the model. On this basis, the six main parameters in the soil hardening model were changed by a single variable method to obtain the influence of each parameter on the deformation of the excavation. As the soil weight or Poisson’s ratio increases, the lateral displacement of the retaining wall increases. With the increase of the secant modulus or cohesive force or internal friction angle of the soil, the lateral displacement of the retaining wall decreases. The power index m has basically no effect on the lateral displacement of the retaining wall. With the increase of m, the settlement of the soil gradually increases uniformly.

Abstract:It is important to make reasonable prediction about the long -term deformation of high rockfill geostructures. However, the deformation is usually underestimated using the rockfill parameters obtained from laboratory tests due to different size effects, which make it necessary to identify parameters from in-situ monitoring data. This paper proposes a novel hybrid back -analysis method with a modified objective function defined for the time-dependent back -analysis problem. The method consists of two stages. In the first stage, an improved weighted average method is proposed to quickly narrow the search region; while in the second stage, an adaptive response surface method is proposed to iteratively search for the satisfactory solution, with a technique that can adaptively consider the translation, contraction or expansion of the exploration region. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed hybrid back -analysis method is demonstrated by back-analyzing the long -term deformation of two high embankments constructed for airport runways, with the rockfills being modeled by a rheological model considering the influence of stress states on the creep behavior.

Abstract:Seepage is a main cause of dam failure, and its stability analysis is the focus of a dam's design, construction, and management. Because a geological survey can only determine the range of a dam foundation's hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic conductivity inversion is crucial in engineering. However, current inversion methods of dam hydraulic conductivity are either not accurate enough or too complex to be directly used in engineering. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method for the inversion of hydraulic conductivity with high application value in hydraulic engineering using an improved genetic algorithm coupled with an unsaturated equivalent continuum model (IGA–UECM). This method is implemented by a new code that fully considers engineering applicability. In addition to overcoming the premature convergence shortcomings of traditional genetic algorithms, it converges faster than Bayesian optimization and tree-structured Parzen estimator inversion algorithms. This method is verified by comparing the water head from drilling exploration and inversion. The results of the inversion are used to study the influence of a cement grouting curtain layout scheme on the seepage field of the Hami concrete-face rockfill dam in China, which is used as an engineering application case of the IGA–UECM. The law of the seepage field is reasonable, which verifies the validity of the IGA–UECM. The new inversion method of hydraulic conductivity and the proposed cement grouting curtain layout in this study offer possible strategies for the design, construction, and management of concrete-face rockfill dams.

Abstract:The utilization of numerical analytic techniques has become essential in evaluating the environmental consequences of excavation in foundation pits. The careful selection of suitable soil constitutive models has significant importance in this regard. The Hardening Soil (HS) model has become widely utilized in the numerical analysis of foundation pits among the several models considered. The essence of a constitutive model is in the identification and determination of its calculation parameters. The stress–strain curve is derived by conducting triaxial testing, utilizing the inherent properties of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. The objective function entails quantifying the disparity between stress–strain curves obtained from various parameters and experimental curves while iteratively searching for five crucial parameters of soil‐hardening models: effective internal friction angle φ, effective cohesion, failure ratio R f , stiffness level‐dependent power exponent, and standard triaxial‐drained test secant stiffness . The objective of this research is to create a computational software utilizing the Python programming language to execute PSO with the purpose of determining sets of five fundamental soil constitutive parameters. This research employs optimized parameters acquired from PSO to construct a numerical model for foundation pits and performs numerical computations. Accurate findings may be reached by comparing the measured deformation in the numerical simulation with that seen in actual foundation pits. The results demonstrate a high degree of consistency between the experimental curves and the five parameter combinations obtained through the PSO algorithm, with an error rate not exceeding 8.2%. Moreover, the optimized curves exhibit closer alignment with theoretical expectations. The settlement values calculated using a numerical model based on optimized parameters show only a 6.12% deviation from actual measurements while closely following the trend of the observed curve. This outcome has the potential to greatly alleviate the burden of conducting indoor tests and holds considerable practical value in engineering applications. The observable optimization impact of PSO also serves as evidence of its viability in improving soil constitutive parameters, providing new perspectives and sources of information for future progress in this domain.

Abstract:The problems existing in rock mass in-situ test, in present selection of deformation parameter, and in conventional compution model are analyzed. Based on the weathering, wave velocity and ground stress of rock masses having their progressive changes from superficial to deep part, a selection of the proggressively changing rock mass deformation parameter is presented. The displacement values monitored during the time of initial impoundment of the reservoir of Lijiaxia Hydropower Station in the upstream of Yellow River prove the reasonableness of the selection of progressively changing rock mass deformation parameters in space. The result is of realistic guiding significance for selection of mechanical parameters and the generalization of compution model in other rock mass engineering projects in the future.

Abstract:Parameters of soil constitutive models are usually identified through laboratory tests. The spatial variability of these parameters is generally not considered due to the limitation of the test scale. This study proposes a data-driven approach to infer the spatially varying parameter of the modified Cam-clay model from limited field observations and subsequently improves soil settlement predictions. The observation data and numerical results of random finite element method are assimilated in an inverse modeling process based on the iterative Ensemble Kalman filtering (iEnKF). Different unknown variables and number of observations are used to study their effects on parameter estimations and settlement predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated through a synthetic partial-loading test. The results show that the site-specific spatial variability can be estimated reasonably, and predictions of settlement can be improved by using the inferred parameter field. When the variables to be inferred change from all 60 variables to the selected 17 important variables, the average error of the estimated fields increases, but the variance decreases. A reduction in the observation spacing and an increase in the number of observations lead to a slightly smaller error of the mean and considerably reduced uncertainties of soil parameters. Although the inferred results of parameter field show different accuracies, the corresponding calculated settlements are generally similar and satisfactory.
An efficient optimization method for identifying parameters of soft structured clay by an enhanced genetic algorithm and elastic–viscoplastic model

Abstract:Soft structured clays usually exhibit complex behaviors, which can lead to difficulties in the determination of parameters and high testing costs. This paper aims to propose an efficient optimization method for identifying the parameters of advanced constitutive model for soft structured clays from only limited conventional triaxial tests. First, a new real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA) is proposed by combining two new crossover and mutation operators for improving the performance of optimization. A newly developed elastic–viscoplastic model accounting for anisotropy, destructuration and creep features is enhanced with the cross-anisotropy of elasticity and is adopted for test simulations during optimization. Laboratory tests on soft Wenzhou marine clay are selected, with three of them being used as objectives for optimization and others for validation. The optimization process, using the new RCGA with a uniform sampling initialization method, is carried out to obtain the soil parameters. A classic genetic algorithm (NSGA-II)-based optimization is also conducted and compared to the RCGA for estimating the performance of the new RCGA. Finally, the optimal parameters are validated by comparing with other measurements and test simulations on the same clay. All comparisons demonstrate that a reliable solution can be obtained by the new RCGA optimization combined with the appropriate soil model, which is practically useful with a reduction in testing costs.

Abstract:The creep parameters of rockfill materials obtained from engineering analogy method or indoor tests often cannot accurately reflect the long-term deformation of high Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams (CFRDs). This paper introduces an optimized inversion method based on multi-population genetic algorithm-improved BP neural network and response surface method (MPGA-BPNN RSM). The parameters used for inversion are determined by parameter sensitivity analysis based on the statistical orthogonal test method. MPGA-BPNN RSM, validated by root-mean-square error, mean absolute percentage error, squared correlation coefficient ( R 2 ), etc., completely reflects the response between the creep parameters and the settlement calculation values obtained by finite element method (FEM). MPGA optimized the objective function to obtain the optimal creep parameters. The results show that the settlement values of Xujixia CFRD calculated by FEM using the inversion parameters has great consistency with the monitored values both in size and in distribution, suggesting that the model parameters obtained by the introduced creep parameter inversion method are feasible and effective. The introduced method can improve the inversion efficiency and the prediction accuracy in FEM applications.

Abstract:To appropriately connect good simulation of rockfill material stress–strain behavior at element level with good simulation of dam deformation, a practical nonlinear elastic EBD constitutive model is developed by introducing dilatancy into the traditional Duncan – Chang EB model. Based on the dam deformation monitoring data of the 164.8 m high Aertashi concrete face rockfill dam and particle swarm optimization, five inversion cases are designed to obtain the optimal EB and EBD model parameters that achieve the best fit with monitoring data. The traditional EB model is shown to have difficulties in achieving good simulation for both settlement and horizontal displacement of rockfill dams, especially in terms of their distribution, whereas the EBD model can simulate both settlement and horizontal displacement well. More importantly, the EB model parameters that allow for acceptable simulation of dam deformation result in poor simulation of element level stress – strain behavior of the gravelly sand, rockfill, and overburden materials. In contrast, the EBD model can achieve good simulation of dam deformation and element level stress – strain behavior simultaneously, paving the way for accurate dam deformation prediction based on model parameters calibrated via triaxial tests.

Abstract:The accurate estimation of soil hydraulic parameters (θs, α, n, and Ks) of the van Genuchten–Mualem model has attracted considerable attention. In this study, we proposed a new two-step inversion method, which first estimated the hydraulic parameter θs using objective function by the final water content, and subsequently estimated the soil hydraulic parameters α, n, and Ks, using a vector-evaluated genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization (VEGA-PSO) method based on objective functions by cumulative infiltration and infiltration rate. The parameters were inversely estimated for four types of soils (sand, loam, silt, and clay) under an in silico experiment simulating the tension disc infiltration at three initial water content levels. The results indicated that the method is excellent and robust. Because the objective function had multilocal minima in a tiny range near the true values, inverse estimation of the hydraulic parameters was difficult; however, the estimated soil water retention curves and hydraulic conductivity curves were nearly identical to the true curves. In addition, the proposed method was able to estimate the hydraulic parameters accurately despite substantial measurement errors in initial water content, final water content, and cumulative infiltration, proving that the method was feasible and practical for field application.

Abstract:<p>A dynamic parameter inverse analysis process for concrete dams based on Gaussian process regression and Jaya algorithm is presented. Gaussian process regression is used to establish a response surface representing the relationship between dynamic elastic modulus and modal parameters (natural frequency and mode shape). The Jaya algorithm is applied for dynamic parameter identification by minimizing the objective function. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we consider a concrete single buttress dam and a hyperbolic concrete arch dam as numerical examples. Numerical results show that Gaussian process regression can significantly improve the parameter identification efficiency without compromising on accuracy. Furthermore, the Jaya algorithm is compared with particle swarm optimization algorithm and genetic algorithm; the results show that the Jaya algorithm is promising in parameter recognition.</p>

Abstract:Dynamic parameters of rockfill materials are an important component of seismic safety analysis of earth and rock dams, which are a complex of non-linear, time-varying, and multi-parameter uncertainties. Existing methods of parameter acquisition, such as indoor tests, are susceptible to environmental and dimensional influences, resulting in the acquired parameters not reflecting the true physical properties of the dam. To this end, this paper combines an adaptive cloud transformation algorithm with an RBF neural network to construct an adaptive cloud neural network model that considers the randomness and fuzziness among dam systems by quantifying the uncertainty factors and uses an actual engineering example from the Wenchuan earthquake to carry out an inverse analysis of the material dynamics parameters. The results show that the acceleration time histories, response spectra, and Fourier amplitudes of the dam measurement points agree well with the measured values, confirming the rationality of the inversion model; the method improves the accuracy and efficiency of dynamic parameter inversion, providing a reference for assessing and analyzing the properties of earth and rock dams under seismic loading.

Abstract:The filling characteristics of rockfill is an engineering problem that cannot be ignored in high dams. Reasonably controlling and optimizing the gradation is critical for improving the compaction quality. The relationship between gradation distribution law and compaction characteristics is investigated using numerical and field experiments, and a method for dam construction gradation design optimization is given. The results show that the Weibull model exhibited better applicability for continuous coarse-grained soil gradation. The extreme porosity of rockfill has a scaling effect, which can be basically eliminated when the maximum particle size reaches 400 mm. The prediction results based on the neural network show that the Weibull model gradation parameters strongly correlate with the porosity. The "occupancy effect", or "filling effect", of fine particles, and the "wedge effect", or "wall effect", of coarse particles, can explain the relationship between the Weibull model gradation parameters and porosity. The gradation parameters have a corresponding relationship with the classical non-uniformity coefficient Cu and curvature coefficient Cc indexes. Cu and Cc indicators can be used to judge the quality of the gradation at first and then optimize it by using the experimental results of the Weibull model parameters. The research results have application reference value for the filling design and compaction quality evaluation of large-scale coarse-grained soil.

Abstract:Whole-life geotechnical design accounts for the evolution of geotechnical properties due to the actions imparted on the infrastructure during the design life to improve design outcomes. In fine-grained soils, geotechnical properties evolve as a result of cyclic softening from excess pore pressure generation under undrained cyclic loading, and hardening during subsequent dissipation. Traditionally geotechnical design has focused on reduced strength and stiffness from softening, overlooking beneficial effects of hardening leading to increases in strength and stiffness. This paper presents a surrogate model that can capture the evolution of geotechnical properties of normally and lightly over consolidated clays through episodes of undrained pre-failure cyclic loading with intervening consolidation, validated against laboratory element test results. The surrogate model is shown to capture the essential elements of the whole-life soil–structure interaction, which include: (i) the excess pore pressure generated during undrained cyclic loading and the associated soil softening; (ii) the reduction in void ratio caused by the dissipation of excess pore pressured during the consolidation process; and (iii) the evolution of undrained shear strength and stiffness through these processes. The surrogate model allows rapid estimation of evolving soil properties in design, enabling automated optimization of geotechnical design calculations (such as required size of foundations or anchors), and use in probabilistic analyses such as Monte Carlo approaches, to quantify the influence of uncertainty in loading history and geotechnical parameters on system reliability.

Abstract:The improved genetic algorithm is proposed to identify the elastic constants of rock foundation of concrete arch dams according to the measured displacements.Considering the premature phases of genetic algorithms,niche technology and method of adaptive probabilities of crossover and mutation are both introduced into the classical simple genetic algorithm to carry out the displacement back analysis which is based on the displacements measured in the model experiments and 3D FEM.In a case study on the practical engineering,the elastic modulus and Poisson′s ratio are obtained.The study shows that this method is suitable for the displacement back analysis of arch dams.It can also avoid premature phases that often happen in simple genetic algorithms,and a good convergence is achieved.
