Abstract:Let (M, g) be a compact oriented four-dimensional Einstein manifold. If M has positive intersection form and g has non-negative sectional curvature, we show that, up to rescaling and isometry, (M, g) is ℂℙ2, with its standard Fubini–Study metric.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric on a 3-dimensional manifold M^3 such that its k-curvature equals to a prescribed function, where the k-curvature is defined by the k-th elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Einstein tensor, 1≤ k≤ 3. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution sets on manifolds when k=2 and 3, provided the conformal class admits a negative k-admissible metric with respect to the Einstein tensor.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:We prove that if $M^n(n\ge 4)$ is a compact Einstein manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy pinching condition $R_0>\sigma _{n}K_{\max }$, where $\sigma _n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant depending only on $n$, then $M$ must be isometric to a spherical space form. Moreover, we prove that if an $n(\ge {\!\!4})$-dimensional compact Einstein manifold satisfies $K_{\min }\ge \eta _n R_0,$ where $\eta _n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is locally symmetric. It should be emphasized that the pinching constant $\eta _n$ is optimal when $n$ is even. We then obtain some rigidity theorems for Einstein manifolds under $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature pinching conditions. Finally we extend the theorems above to Einstein submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold, and prove that if $M$ is an $n(\ge {\!\!4})$-dimensional compact Einstein submanifold in the simply connected space form $F^{N}(c)$ with constant curvature $c\ge 0$, and the normalized scalar curvature $R_0$ of $M$ satisfies $R_0>\frac{A_n}{A_n+4n-8}(c+H^2),$ where $A_n=n^3-5n^2+8n$, and $H$ is the mean curvature of $M$, then $M$ is isometric to a standard $n$-sphere.

Abstract:Let M-n, n >= 3, be a compact differentiable manifold with nonpositive Yamabe invariant sigma(M). Suppose g(0) is a continuous metric with volume V (M, g(0)) = 1, smooth outside a compact set Sigma, and is in W-loc(1,p) for some p > n. Suppose the scalar curvature of g(0) is at least sigma(M) outside Sigma. We prove that g(0) is Einstein outside Sigma if the codimension of Sigma is at least 2. If in addition, g(0) is Lipschitz then g(0) is smooth and Einstein after a change of the smooth structure. If Sigma is a compact embedded hypersurface, g(0) is smooth up to Sigma from two sides of Sigma, and if the difference of the mean curvatures along Sigma at two sides of Sigma has a fixed appropriate sign, then g(0) is also Einstein outside Sigma. For manifolds with dimension between 3 and 7, without a spin assumption we obtain a positive mass theorem on an asymptotically flat manifold for metrics with a compact singular set of codimension at least 2.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that if the Ricci tensor of a compact nonpositively curved manifold M n is nowhere negative definite, then it admits local flat factors. To be more precise, let U C M be the open subset where the Ricci tensor has maximum rank r. Then for any connected component U a of U, its universal cover U a is isometric to R n―r ×N r a , where n r a is a nonpositively curved manifold with negative Ricci curvature. In particular, if M n is compact, nonpositively curved without Euclidean de Rham factor, and both the manifold and the metric are real analytic, then its Ricci tensor must be negative definite somewhere.

Abstract:We construct Einstein metrics of non-positive scalar curvature on certain solid torus bundles over a Fano Kahler-Einstein manifold. We show, among other things, that the negative Einstein metrics are conformally compact, and the Ricci-flat metrics have slower-than-Euclidean volume growth and quadratic curvature decay. Also we construct positive Einstein metrics on certain 3-sphere bundles over a Fano Kahler-Einstein manifold. We classify the homeomorphism and diffeomorphism types of the total spaces when the base is the complex projective plane.

Abstract:We determine pseudosymmetry type curvature conditions of some 2-quasi-Einstein manifolds (M,g), dim M > 3, with the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R expresed by a linear combination of Kulkarni-Nomizu products formed by the metric tensor g, the Ricci tensor S and its square S^2. Certain warped product manifolds, with 2-dimensional base, and in particular some spacetimes, are such 2-quasi Einstein manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that any compact complex surface with positive first Chern class admits an Einstein metric which is conformally related to a Kaehler metric. The key new ingredient is the existence of such a metric on the blow-up of the complex projective plane at two distinct points.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a global rigidity theorem for negatively curved Finsler metrics on a compact manifold of dimension it greater than or equal to 3. We show that for such a Finsler manifold, if the flag curvature is a scalar function on the tangent bundle, then the Finsler metric is of Randers type. Abstract:In this paper, we study the isolation phenomena of Einstein manifolds from the viewpoint of submanifolds theory. First, for locally strongly convex Einstein affine hyperspheres we prove a rigidity theorem and as its direct consequence we establish a unified affine differential geometric characterization of the noncompact symmetric spaces E6(-26)/F-4 and SL(m, R)/SO(m), SL(m, C)/SU(m), SU*(2m)/Sp(m) for each m >= 3. Second and analogously, for Einstein Lagrangian minimal submanifolds of the complex projective space CPn(4) with constant holomorphic sectional curvature 4, we prove a similar rigidity theorem and as its direct consequence we establish a unified differential geometric characterization of the compact symmetric spaces E-6/F-4 and SU(m)/SO(m), SU(m), SU(2m)/Sp(m) for each m >= 3.

Abstract:We prove that Einstein four-manifolds with positive scalar curvature are Hermitian Einstein if and only if the determinant of the self-dual Weyl curvature is positive. The proof is to construct a subharmonic function using the Weitzenbock formula for the self-dual Weyl curvature, and the conclusion follows from a classical result of Derdzinski. The new idea in the proof is to investigate both $|W^+|^2$ and $det W^+$. Moreover, the subharmonic function we constructed is closely related to the refined Kato inequality of Gursky and LeBrun.

Abstract:In this note we prove three rigidity results for Einstein manifolds with bounded covering geometry. (1) An almost flat manifold $(M,g)$ must be flat if it is Einstein, i.e. $\operatorname{Ric}_g=\lambda g$ for some real number $\lambda$. (2) A compact Einstein manifolds with a non-vanishing and almost maximal volume entropy is hyperbolic. (3) A compact Einstein manifold admitting a uniform local rewinding almost maximal volume is isometric to a space form.

In this paper, we study the Riemannian functional F k [g] = f M σ k (C g )dvol g defined on M 1 = {g E M|Vol(g) = 1}, where M is the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on a compact smooth manifold M and {σ k (C g ), 1 5 and a conformally flat metric g is a critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0, then g must have constant sectional curvature. This is a generalization of Gursky and Viaclovsky's very recent theorem that the critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0 characterized the three-dimensional space forms.
