Avoiding small denominator problems by means of the homotopy analysis method

Abstract:The so-called ``small denominator problem'' was a fundamental problem of dynamics, as pointed out by Poincaré. Small denominators appear most commonly in perturbative theory. The Duffing equation is the simplest example of a non-integrable system exhibiting all problems due to small denominators. In this paper, using the forced Duffing equation as an example, we illustrate that the famous ``small denominator problems'' never appear if a non-perturbative approach based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM), namely ``the method of directly defining inverse mapping'' (MDDiM), is used. The HAM-based MDDiM provides us great freedom to directly define the inverse operator of an undetermined linear operator so that all small denominators can be completely avoided and besides the convergent series of multiple limit-cycles of the forced Duffing equation with high nonlinearity are successfully obtained. So, from the viewpoint of the HAM, the famous ``small denominator problems'' are only artifacts of perturbation methods. Therefore, completely abandoning perturbation methods but using the HAM-based MDDiM, one would be never troubled by ``small denominators''. The HAM-based MDDiM has general meanings in mathematics and thus can be used to attack many open problems related to the so-called ``small denominators''.

Abstract:In this study, a thorough investigation was conducted into the Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) and its application to solve the Burger and Blasius equations. The HPM is a mathematical technique that combines aspects of homotopy and perturbation methods. By introducing an auxiliary parameter, the complex problems were transformed into a series of simpler equations that could be solved step by step. The results of the study are significant. The HPM was found to be effective in solving the Burger and Blasius equations quickly and accurately. It proved to be a valuable tool for handling challenging mathematical problems. Consequently, researchers encountering seemingly impossible math puzzles can consider employing HPM as a potential solution.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Many researchers have used the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) method but with different strategies, and this paper aims to present a general method of HPM to make this method more straightforward to use for future studies. HPM itself has a lot of potential. By making it more general, it makes it even more useable than before and gives this paper a lot of potential applications. This paper makes the HPM more warrantyable for future works. HPM is a strong technique for investigating both linear and nonlinear differential equations. SymPy, a Python library, was also used to implement HPM and solve problems allegorically. Three issues were addressed: Convection and radiation combining to cool a lumped system, a purely convective rectangular fin, and the Laplace equation for heat transfer. The HPM has produced superior outcomes compared to numerical and analytical methods. At last, SymPy's accomplishment has been described, and for each of the three researched problems, a complete technique for implementing HPM using Python is presented. It is shown that HPM is a mathematical technique that covers the limitations of the classical perturbation approach and can be generally used in physics and engineering subjects.

Abstract:Let $A(G)$ and $B(H)$ be the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras of locally compact groups $G$ and $H$, respectively. Ilie and Spronk have shown that continuous piecewise affine maps $\alpha: Y \subseteq H\rightarrow G$ induce completely bounded homomorphisms $\Phi:A(G)\rightarrow B(H)$, and that when $G$ is amenable, every completely bounded homomorphism arises in this way. This generalised work of Cohen in the abelian setting. We believe that there is a gap in a key lemma of the existing argument, which we do not see how to repair. We present here a different strategy to show the result, which instead of using topological arguments, is more combinatorial and makes use of measure theoretic ideas, following more closely the original ideas of Cohen.

Abstract:Spawned by Scarf's pioneering work on the calculation of fixed points, an entire new field in mathematical programming has emerged. A wide array of problems that can be posed as fixed point problems, such as problems involving equilibria, games, systems of equations, global optimization, and structural mechanics, have come into the purview of these new constructive techniques. Underlying these techniques are certain mathematical concepts from differential topology, more specifically degree theory (Brouwer) and homotopies. Usually, the mathematical machinery required for these concepts necessitates a keen familiarity with piecewise linear and/or differential topology. In this paper, the development is made by following the paths arising from an ordinary differential equation. The differential equation results from Cramer's rule for linear equations. The applicability and ease of our approach are shown by obtaining simple proofs of theorems in differential topology.

Abstract:Part of the title of this article is taken from writings of Einstein, which argue that we need to exercise our ability to analyse familiar concepts, to demonstrate the conditions on which their justification and usefulness depend, and the way in which these developed, little by little $\ldots$. My aim is to do this for the initial negative reactions to the seminar by E. Cech on higher homotopy groups to the ICM meeting in Z\" urich in 1932; then the subsequent work of Hurewicz, the use of groupoids and so the use of many base points, and how J.H.C. Whitehead's use of free crossed modules gave rise to a successful search for higher dimensional versions of the fundamental group and of the theorem of Van Kampen.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find an approximate solution of a fractional differential equation. The fractional Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation (FNWSE) is used to elucidate the solution process, which is one of the nonlinear amplitude equation, and it enhances a significant role in the modeling of various physical phenomena arising in fluid mechanics, solid-state physics, optics, plasma physics, dispersion and convection systems. Design/methodology/approach In Part 1, the authors adopted Mohand transform to find the analytical solution of FNWSE. In this part, the authors apply the fractional complex transform (the two-scale transform) to convert the problem into its differential partner, and then they introduce the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to bring down the nonlinear terms for the approximate solution. Findings The HPM makes numerical simulation for the fractional differential equations easy, and the two-scale transform is a strong tool for fractal models. Originality/value The HPM with the two-scale transform sheds a bright light on numerical approach to fractional calculus.

On the fundamental conjecture of HDMR: a Fourier analysis approach

Abstract:Although the HDMR decomposition has become an important tool for the understanding of high dimensional functions, the fundamental conjecture underlying its practical utility is still open for theoretical analysis. In this paper, we introduce the HDMR decomposition in conjunction with the Fourier-HDMR approximation leading to the following conclusions: (1) we suggest a type of Fourier-HDMR approximation for certain classes of differentiable functions; (2) utilizing the Fourier-HDMR method, we prove the fundamental conjecture about the dominance of low order terms in the HDMR expansion under relevant conditions, and we also obtain error estimates of the truncated HDMR expansion up to order u ; (3) we prove the domain decomposition approximation theorem which shows that the global Fourier-HDMR approximation is not always optimal for a given accuracy order; (4) and finally, a piecewise Fourier-HDMR approach is discussed for high dimensional modeling. These results help to further understand how to efficiently represent the high dimensional functions.

Abstract:The purpose of the present paper is to introduce a method, probably for the first time, to predict the multiplicity of the solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems. This procedure can be easily applied on nonlinear ordinary differential equations with boundary conditions. This method, as will be seen, besides anticipating of multiplicity of the solutions of the nonlinear differential equations, calculates effectively the all branches of the solutions (on the condition that, there exist such solutions for the problem) analytically at the same time. In this manner, for practical use in science and engineering, this method might give new unfamiliar class of solutions which is of fundamental interest and furthermore, the proposed approach convinces to apply it on nonlinear equations by today’s powerful software programs so that it does not need tedious stages of evaluation and can be used without studying the whole theory. In fact, this technique has new point of view to well-known powerful analytical method for nonlinear differential equations namely homotopy analysis method (HAM). Everyone familiar to HAM knows that the convergence-controller parameter plays important role to guarantee the convergence of the solutions of nonlinear differential equations. It is shown that the convergence-controller parameter plays a fundamental role in the prediction of multiplicity of solutions and all branches of solutions are obtained simultaneously by one initial approximation guess, one auxiliary linear operator and one auxiliary function. The validity and reliability of the method is tested by its application to some nonlinear exactly solvable differential equations which is practical in science and engineering.

Abstract:We prove that a recently proposed homotopy perturbation method for the treatment of population dynamics is just the Taylor expansion of the population variables about initial time. Our results show that this perturbation method fails to provide the global features of the ecosystem dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the claims in the original Kipnis-Shamir attack on the HFE cryptosystems and the improved attack by Courtois that the complexity of the attacks is polynomial in terms of the number of variables are invalid. We present computer experiments and a theoretical argument using basic algebraic geometry to explain why it is so. Furthermore we show that even with the help of the powerful new Gröbner basis algorithm like F 4, the Kipnis-Shamir attack still should be exponential but not polynomial. This again is supported by our theoretical argument.

We present methods for handling homotopies of limit spaces, define fundamental groupoids, and prove a generalized version of the Seifert-van Kampen Theorem for limit spaces.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics of unitary systems is considered in quasi-Hermitian representation. In this framework the concept of perturbation is found counterintuitive, for three reasons. The first one is that in this formalism we are allowed to change the physical Hilbert-space norm. Thus, in a preselected Hamiltonian $H(\lambda)=H_0+\lambda\,H_1$ the size (and, hence, influence) of the perturbation cannot always be kept under a reliable control. Often, an enhanced sensitivity to perturbations is observed, for this reason, in open quantum systems. Second, even when we consider just a closed quantum system in which the influence of $H_1\neq H_1^\dagger$ is guaranteed to be small, the correct probabilistic interpretation of the system remains ambiguous, mainly due to the non-uniqueness of the physical Hilbert-space inner-product metric~$\Theta$. Third, even if we decide to ignore the ambiguity and if we pick up just any one of the eligible metrics (which reduces the scope of the theory of course), such a choice would still vary with $\lambda$. In our paper it is shown that all of these three obstacles can be circumvented via just a mild amendment of the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation-expansion approach. The flexibility of $\Theta=\Theta(\lambda)$ is shown to remain tractable while opening several new model-building horizons including the study of generic random perturbations and/or of multiple specific non-Hermitian toy models. In parallel, several paradoxes and open questions are shown to survive.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to research the Homotopy Perturbation method on heat conduction equation. The heat equation is an important partial differential equation which describes the distribution of heat in a given region over time. The method is applied to solve problems of the homogeneous and non-homogeneous heat equation. The obtained results are found to be accurate and efficient solutions. To show the strength of the method, test problems are discussed and the obtained numerical results are compared to the existing exact solutions and are depicted in terms of plots to reveal its precision and reliability. The results demonstrate that the HPM is very effective and reliable and does not require any restrictive assumption for nonlinear terms.

Abstract:Journal of Topology and Analysis, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we consider Morse theory for perturbed Dirac-harmonic maps into flat tori. We show that Morse homology can be defined for some classes of perturbations, and that it is determined by a homotopy type of the perturbations. We also give an explicit computation of the homology. As an application, we give a lower bound on the number of perturbed Dirac-harmonic maps in a given component for some classes of perturbations.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We introduce topological conditions on a broad class of functionals that ensure that the persistent homology modules of their associated sublevel set filtration admit persistence diagrams, which, in particular, implies that they satisfy generalized Morse inequalities. We illustrate the applicability of these results by recasting the original proof of the Unstable Minimal Surface Theorem given by Morse and Tompkins in a modern and rigorous framework.
