Abstract:Mutual interference and prey refuge are important drivers of predator-prey dynamics. The "exponent" or degree of mutual interference has been under much debate in theoretical ecology. In the present work, we investigate the interplay of the mutual interference exponent, and prey refuge, on the behavior of a predator-prey model with a generalized Holling type functional response - considering in particular the "non-smooth" case. This model can also be used to model an infectious disease where a susceptible population, moves to an infected class, after being infected by the disease. We investigate dynamical properties of the system and derive conditions for the occurrence of saddle-node, transcritical and Hopf-bifurcations. A sufficient condition for finite time extinction of the prey species has also been derived. In addition, we investigate the effect of a prey refuge on the population dynamics of the model and derive conditions such that the prey refuge would yield persistence of the population. We provide additional verification of our analytical results via numerical simulations. Our findings are in accordance with classical experimental results in ecology (Gause, 1934), that show that extinction of predator and prey populations is possible in a finite time period - but that bringing in refuge can effectively yield persistence.
Stochastic population dynamics in spatially extended predator-prey systems

Abstract:Spatially extended population dynamics models that incorporate intrinsic noise serve as case studies for the role of fluctuations and correlations in biological systems. Including spatial structure and stochastic noise in predator-prey competition invalidates the deterministic Lotka-Volterra picture of neutral population cycles. Stochastic models yield long-lived erratic population oscillations stemming from a resonant amplification mechanism. In spatially extended predator-prey systems, one observes noise-stabilized activity and persistent correlations. Fluctuation-induced renormalizations of the oscillation parameters can be analyzed perturbatively. The critical dynamics and the non-equilibrium relaxation kinetics at the predator extinction threshold are characterized by the directed percolation universality class. Spatial or environmental variability results in more localized patches which enhances both species densities. Affixing variable rates to individual particles and allowing for trait inheritance subject to mutations induces fast evolutionary dynamics for the rate distributions. Stochastic spatial variants of cyclic competition with rock-paper-scissors interactions illustrate connections between population dynamics and evolutionary game theory, and demonstrate how space can help maintain diversity. In two dimensions, three-species cyclic competition models of the May-Leonard type are characterized by the emergence of spiral patterns whose properties are elucidated by a mapping onto a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Extensions to general food networks can be classified on the mean-field level, which provides both a fundamental understanding of ensuing cooperativity and emergence of alliances. Novel space-time patterns emerge as a result of the formation of competing alliances, such as coarsening domains that each incorporate rock-paper-scissors competition games.

Abstract:In mathematical ecology, it is often assumed that properties of a mathematical model are robust to specific parameterization of functional responses, in particular preserving the bifurcation structure of the system, as long as different functions are qualitatively similar. This intuitive assumption has been challenged recently (Fussmann & Blasius, Community response to enrichment is highly sensitive to model structure, Biology Letters 1:9-12, 2005). Having considered the prey-predator system as a paradigm of nonlinear population dynamics, it has been shown that in fact both the bifurcation structure and the structure of the phase space can be rather different even when the component functions are apparently close to each other. However, these observations have so far been largely limited to nonspatial systems described by ODEs. In this paper, our main motivating interest is to investigate whether such structural sensitivity occurs in spatially explicit models of population dynamics, in particular those that are described by PDEs. We consider a prey-predator model described by a system of two nonlinear reaction–diffusion-advection equations where the predation term is parameterized by three different yet numerically close functions. Using some analytical tools along with numerical simulations, we show that the properties of spatiotemporal dynamics are rather different between the three cases, so that patterns observed for one parameterization may not occur for the other two ones.

Abstract:Population dynamics deals with the collective phenomena of living organisms, and it has attracted much attention since it is expected to explain how not only living organisms but also human beings have been adapted to varying environments. However, it is quite difficult to insist on a general statement on living organisms since mathematical models heavily depend on phenomena that we focus on. Recently it was reported that the fluctuation relations on the fitness of living organisms held for a quite general problem setting. But, interactions between organisms were not incorporated in the problem setting, though interaction plays critical roles in collective phenomena in physics and population dynamics. In this paper, we propose interacting models for population dynamics and provide the perturbative theory of population dynamics. Then, we derive the variational principle and fluctuation relations for interacting population dynamics.

Abstract:It is well-established that including spatial structure and stochastic noise in models for predator-prey interactions invalidates the classical deterministic Lotka–Volterra picture of neutral population cycles. In contrast, stochastic models yield long-lived, but ultimately decaying erratic population oscillations, which can be understood through a resonant amplification mechanism for density fluctuations. In Monte Carlo simulations of spatial stochastic predator-prey systems, one observes striking complex spatio-temporal structures. These spreading activity fronts induce persistent correlations between predators and prey. In the presence of local particle density restrictions (finite prey carrying capacity), there exists an extinction threshold for the predator population. The accompanying continuous non-equilibrium phase transition is governed by the directed-percolation universality class. We employ field-theoretic methods based on the Doi–Peliti representation of the master equation for stochastic particle interaction models to (i) map the ensuing action in the vicinity of the absorbing state phase transition to Reggeon field theory, and (ii) to quantitatively address fluctuation-induced renormalizations of the population oscillation frequency, damping, and diffusion coefficients in the species coexistence phase.

Abstract:We develop variations of a discrete-time predator–prey model to examine how intrinsic properties of the prey population may impact overall system dynamics. We focus on two properties of the prey species, namely developmental stage structure and undercompensatory (contest competition) versus overcompensatory (scramble competition) density dependence. Through analysis of these models, we examine how these different prey features affect system stability. Our results show that when prey growth is overcompensatory, the predator may have a stabilizing effect on the system dynamics with increasing predator density reversing the period doubling route to chaos observed with Ricker-type nonlinearities. Moreover, we find that stage structure in the prey does not have a destabilizing effect on the system dynamics unless the prey projection matrix is imprimitive or close to imprimitive, as may occur for semelparous species. In this case, a sufficiently large predator density may stabilize cycles that are otherwise unstable.

Abstract:We apply a perturbative Doi--Peliti field-theoretical analysis to the stochastic spatially extended symmetric Rock-Paper-Scissors (RPS) and May--Leonard (ML) models, in which three species compete cyclically. Compared to the two-species Lotka--Volterra predator-prey (LV) model, according to numerical simulations, these cyclical models appear to be less affected by intrinsic stochastic fluctuations. Indeed, we demonstrate that the qualitative features of the ML model are insensitive to intrinsic reaction noise. In contrast, and although not yet observed in numerical simulations, we find that the RPS model acquires significant fluctuation-induced renormalizations in the perturbative regime, similar to the LV model. We also study the formation of spatio-temporal structures in the framework of stability analysis and provide a clearcut explanation for the absence of spatial patterns in the RPS system, whereas the spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures features prominently in the LV and the ML models.

Population Extinction under Bursty Reproduction in a Time Modulated Environment

Abstract:In recent years non-demographic variability has been shown to greatly affect dynamics of stochastic populations. For example, non-demographic noise in the form of a bursty reproduction process with an a-priori unknown burst size, or environmental variability in the form of time-varying reaction rates, have been separately found to dramatically impact the extinction risk of isolated populations. In this work we investigate the extinction risk of an isolated population under the combined influence of these two types of non-demographic variation. Using the so-called momentum-space WKB approach we arrive at a set of time-dependent Hamilton equations. In order to account for the explicit time dependence, we find the instanton of the time-perturbed Hamiltonian numerically, where analytical expressions are presented in particular limits using various perturbation techniques. We focus on two classes of time-varying environments: periodically-varying rates corresponding to seasonal effects, and a sudden decrease in the birth rate corresponding to a catastrophe. All our theoretical results are tested against numerical Monte Carlo simulations with time-dependent rates and also against a numerical solution of the corresponding time-dependent Hamilton equations.

Abstract:In this paper, two prey–predator models with distributed delays are presented based on the growth and loss rates of the predator, which are much smaller than that of the prey, leading to a singular perturbation problem. It is obtained that Hopf bifurcation can occur, where the coexistence equilibrium becomes unstable leading to a stable limit cycle. Subsequently, considering the perturbation parameter [Formula: see text], the fact that the solution crossing the transcritical point converges to a stable equilibrium is discussed for the model with Holling type I using the linear chain criterion, center-manifold reduction, the geometric singular perturbation theory and entry–exit function. The existence and uniqueness of relaxation oscillation cycle for the model with Holling type II are obtained. In addition, numerical simulations are provided to verify the analytical results.

Abstract:The paper's primary objective is to examine the dynamic behavior of an integer and noninteger predator–prey system with a Holling type IV functional response in the Caputo sense. Our focus is on understanding how harvesting influences the stability, equilibria, bifurcations, and limit cycles within this system. We employ qualitative and quantitative analysis methods rooted in bifurcation theory, dynamical theory, and numerical simulation. We also delve into studying the boundedness of solutions and investigating the stability and existence of equilibrium points within the system. Leveraging Sotomayor's theorem, we establish the presence of both the saddle-node and transcritical bifurcations. The analysis of the Hopf bifurcation is carried out using the normal form theorem. The model under consideration is extended to the fractional reaction–diffusion model which captures non-local and long-range effects more accurately than integer-order derivatives. This makes fractional reaction–diffusion systems suitable for modeling phenomena with anomalous diffusion or memory effects, improving the fidelity of simulations in turn. An adaptable numerical technique for solving this class of differential equations is also suggested. Through simulation results, we observe that one of the Lyapunov exponents has a negative value, indicating the potential for the emergence of a stable-limit cycle via bifurcation as well as chaotic and complex spatiotemporal distributions. We supplement our analytical investigations with numerical simulations to provide a comprehensive understanding of the system's behavior. It was discovered that both the prey and predator populations will continue to coexist and be permanent, regardless of the choice of fractional parameter.

Abstract:We study the complex dynamics of a Monod–Haldane-type predator–prey interaction model that incorporates: (1) A constant time delay in the prey growth; and (2) diffusion in both prey and predator. We provide the rigorous results of our system including the asymptotic stability of a positive equilibrium; Hopf bifurcation; and the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcated periodic solutions. We also perform numerical simulations on the effects of diffusion or/and delay when the corresponding ODE model has either a unique interior equilibrium with two interior attractors or two interior equilibria. Our theoretical and numerical results show that diffusion can either stabilize or destabilize the system; large delay could destabilize the system; and the combination of diffusion and delay could intensify the instability of the system. Moreover, when the corresponding ODE system has two interior equilibria, diffusion or time delay in prey or both could lead to the extinction of predator. Our results may provide us useful biological insights on population managements for prey–predator interaction systems.
Dynamics of a Stochastic Prey–predator System with Prey Refuge, Predation Fear and Its Carry-over Effects

Abstract:This paper proposes and studies the dynamics of a Holling-type II predator–prey interaction system that incorporates the following three components: (1) a prey refuge; (2) predation fear and its carry-over effects; and (3) environmental noise in both prey and predator populations. The impacts of those three components are studied through both rigorous analysis and numerical simulations. Analytical results show that the introduction of prey refuge, predation fear, and its carry-over effects can generate Hopf bifurcation. It is found that increasing prey refuge and predation fear effect in a reasonable region can stabilize the system, while excessive refuge strength would lead to the extinction of predators. The theoretical results of the corresponding system with environmental noise include (1) sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique ergodic stationary distribution of the SDE system by constructing appropriate stochastic Lyapunov functions; (2) the explicit probability density function of the distribution by solving the Fokker–Planck equation; and (3) the extinction conditions of prey and/or predator species at an exponential rate in the long run. Our work shows that the proposed model, incorporating prey refuge, predation fear, carry-over effect, and environmental noise, exhibits rich and complex dynamic behaviors. Moreover, our results indicate that small environmental noise can save the prey and predator from extinction, while large environmental noise can drive the species to extinction. These interesting findings provide more perspectives on the protection and control of species in complex communities.

Abstract:We consider the system of reaction-diffusion equations proposed in [8] as a population dynamics model. The first equation stands for the population density and models the ecological effects, namely dispersion and growth with a Allee effect (bistable nonlinearity). The second one stands for the Allee threshold, seen as a trait mean, and accounts for evolutionary effects. Precisely, the Allee threshold is submitted to three main effects: dispersion (mirroring ecology), asymmetrical gene flow and selection. The strength of the latter depends on the population density and is thus coupling ecology and evolution. Our main result is to mathematically prove evolutionary rescue: any small initial population, that would become extinct in the sole ecological context, will persist and spread thanks to evolutionary factors.

Abstract:This study aims to thoroughly investigate the dynamics of a predator–prey model with a Beddington-De Angelis functional response. We assume that the prey refuge is proportional to both species. We establish the standard properties of boundedness, permanence, and local stability. We show that under certain parameter conditions, transcritical bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation occur. To understand the nature of the limit cycle, we determine the direction of the Hopf bifurcation. We focus on the significant ranges of the predators' prey capturing rate and examine how the level of prey fear and the predator's mutual interference affect the system's stability. Through numerical analysis, we study the behavior of the Lyapunov exponent and observe multiple self-repeating shrimp-shaped patterns that indicate periodic attractors in discrete-time predator–prey system. These structures appear across a broad region associated with chaotic dynamics. Additionally, if the intensity of white noise is kept below a specific threshold, the deterministic control approach is equally effective in environmental fluctuation. Numerical simulations support these findings.

Abstract:We explore a diffusive predator-prey system that incorporates the fear effect in advective environments. Firstly, we analyze the eigenvalue problem and the adjoint operator, considering Constant-Flux and Dirichlet (CF/D) boundary conditions, as well as Free-Flow (FF) boundary conditions. Our investigation focuses on determining the direction and stability of spatial Hopf bifurcation, with the generation delay $\tau$ serving as the bifurcation parameter. Additionally, we examine the influence of both linear and Holling-II functional responses on the dynamics of the model. Through these analyses, we aim to gain a better understanding of the intricate relationship between advection, predation, and prey response in this system.

Abstract:Stochastic, spatially extended models for predator-prey interaction display spatio-temporal structures that are not captured by the Lotka-Volterra mean-field rate equations. These spreading activity fronts reflect persistent correlations between predators and prey that can be analyzed through field-theoretic methods. Introducing local restrictions on the prey population induces a predator extinction threshold, with the critical dynamics at this continuous active-to-absorbing state transition governed by the scaling exponents of directed percolation. Novel features in biologically motivated model variants include the stabilizing effect of a periodically varying carrying capacity that describes seasonally oscillating resource availability; enhanced mean species densities and local fluctuations caused by spatially varying reaction rates; and intriguing evolutionary dynamics emerging when variable interaction rates are affixed to individuals combined with trait inheritance to their offspring. The basic susceptible-infected-susceptible and susceptible-infected-recovered models for infectious disease spreading near their epidemic thresholds are respectively captured by the directed and dynamic isotropic percolation universality classes. Systems with three cyclically competing species akin to spatial rock-paper-scissors games may display striking spiral patterns, yet conservation laws can prevent such noise-induced structure formation. In diffusively coupled inhomogeneous settings, one may observe the stabilization of vulnerable ecologies prone to finite-size extinction or fixation due to immigration waves emanating from the interfaces.

Abstract:By applying the comparison theorem, Lyapunov functional, and almost periodic functional hull theory of the impulsive differential equations, this paper gives some new sufficient conditions for the uniform persistence, global asymptotical stability, and almost periodic solution to a nonautonomous Lotka-Volterra predator-prey dispersal system with impulsive effects. The main results of this paper extend some corresponding results obtained in recent years. Abstract:In this paper, we consider a diffusive–advective predator–prey system in a spatially heterogeneous environment subject to a hostile boundary condition, where the interaction term is governed by a Holling type II functional response. We investigate the existence and global attractivity of both trivial and semi-trivial steady-state solutions and the existence and local stability of coexistence steady-state solutions, depending on the size of a key principal eigenvalue. In addition, we show that the effect of advection on the principal eigenvalue is monotonic for small advection rates, depending on the concavity of the resource distribution. For arbitrary advection rates, we consider two explicit resource distributions for which we can say precisely the behaviour of the principal eigenvalue as it depends on advection, highlighting that advection can either improve or impair a population's ability to persist, depending on the characteristics of the resource distribution. We present some numerical simulations to demonstrate the outcomes as they depend on the advection rates for the full predator–prey system. These insights highlight the intimate relationship between environmental heterogeneity, directed movement, and the hostile boundary. The methods employed include upper and lower solution techniques, bifurcation theory, spectral analysis, and the comparison principle.

Abstract:This work investigates the complex dynamics of a discrete-time predator–prey system with a nonlinear Allee effect. We obtain the discrete system using the piecewise constant argument method. The piecewise argument approach produces a more dynamically consistent discrete system than other numerical techniques for discretization. We investigate the presence and stability of fixed points. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the system undergoes Neimark–Sacker bifurcation at the positive fixed point by utilizing the Allee effect constant as the bifurcation parameter. To reduce bifurcation and chaos, we use feedback and hybrid control strategies. Our numerical simulations demonstrate the importance of the Allee effect in determining the system's behavior. The findings indicate that an adequate Allee effect might improve social connections and cooperation across populations. However, a significant Allee effect on prey can destabilize the positive fixed point, thus resulting in the extinction of predator and prey populations.
