What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the invariant subspaces of commutative operator algebras with finite split strict multiplicity, and give sufficient conditions for the reflexivity and hereditary reflexivity of these algebras. Specifically, the authors explore under what conditions such algebras can satisfy reflexivity (that is, the algebra is equal to the algebra generated by its invariant subspaces) and hereditary reflexivity (that is, every strongly closed subspace in the algebra is reflexive). By introducing the concept of split strict multiplicity, the paper extends previous research on strictly cyclic algebras, especially generalizing the results to algebras on Banach spaces. In the paper, an algebra \(A\subset B(X)\) is defined to have strict multiplicity \(p\in\mathbb{N}\) (denoted as \(s.m.(A) = p\)) if there exist \(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_p\in X\) such that \(X\) is the closure of all linear combinations of these vectors acted on by elements in \(A\). Further, if these subspaces \(\{ax_i|a\in A\} = X_i\) are closed and \(X=\bigoplus_{i = 1}^pX_i\), then \(A\) is said to have split strict multiplicity \(p\) (denoted as \(s.s.m(A)=p\)). The main contribution of the paper lies in providing sufficient conditions for the reflexivity and hereditary reflexivity of such algebras, and proving the validity of these conditions through specific propositions and theorems. For example, Theorem 4 shows that for a commutative, unital, strongly closed subalgebra \(A\subset B(X)\) with split strict multiplicity, for every \(T\in\text{algLat}(A)\), there exists \(a_0\in A\) such that \((T - T_{a_0})(x)\in\bigoplus_{j = 1}^pR_j\) for all \(x\in X\), where \(R_j\) is the radical of the quotient algebra \(A/I_j\). This shows that \(A\) is reflexive modulo the radical. In addition, the paper also discusses how to further simplify these conditions when the algebra has the spectral synthesis property, so as to obtain more direct conclusions about reflexivity and hereditary reflexivity.
