Abstract:In the first part of our paper we analyze bisolutions and inverses of (non-autonomous) evolution equations. We are mostly interested in pseudo-unitary evolutions on Krein spaces, which naturally arise in linear Quantum Field Theory. We prove that with boundary conditions given by a maximal positive and maximal negative space we can associate an inverse, which can be viewed as a generalization of the usual Feynman propagator. In the context of globally hyperbolic manifolds, the Feynman propagator turns out to be a distinguished inverse of the Klein-Gordon operator. Within the formalism of Quantum Field Theory on curved spacetimes, the Feynman propagator yields the expectation values of time-ordered products of fields between the in and out vacuum --the basic ingredient for Feynman diagrams.

A tale of three approaches: dynamical phase transitions for weakly bound Brownian particles

Abstract:We investigate a system of Brownian particles weakly bound by attractive parity-symmetric potentials that grow at large distances as $V(x) \sim |x|^\alpha$, with $0 < \alpha < 1$. The probability density function $P(x,t)$ at long times reaches the Boltzmann-Gibbs equilibrium state, with all moments finite. However, the system's relaxation is not exponential, as is usual for a confining system with a well-defined equilibrium, but instead follows a stretched exponential $e^{- \mathrm{const} \, t^\nu}$ with exponent $\nu=\alpha/(2+\alpha)$. This problem is studied from three perspectives. First, we propose a straightforward and general scaling rate-function solution for $P(x,t)$. This rate-function, which is an important tool from large deviation theory, also displays anomalous time scaling and a dynamical phase transition. Second, through the eigenfunctions of the Fokker-Planck operator, we obtain, using the WKB method, more complete solutions that reproduce the rate function approach. Finally, we show how the alternative path-integral formalism allows us to recover the same results, with the above rate-function being the solution of the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation describing the most probable path. Properties such as parity, the role of initial conditions, and the dynamical phase transition are thoroughly studied in all three approaches.

Revisiting evolution equations for generalised parton distributions

Abstract:We revisit the evolution of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) in momentum space. We formulate the evolution kernels at one-loop in perturbative QCD (pQCD) in a form suitable for numerical implementation and that allows for an accurate study of their properties. This leads to the first open-source implementation of GPD evolution equations able to cover the entire kinematic region and allowing for heavy-quark-threshold crossings. The numerical implementation of the GPD evolution equations is publicly accessible through the APFEL++ evolution library and is available within the PARTONS framework. Our formulation makes use of the operator definition of GPDs in light-cone gauge renormalised in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme. For the sake of clarity, we recompute the evolution kernels at one-loop in pQCD, confirming previous calculations. We obtain general conditions on the evolution kernels deriving from the GPD sum rules and show that our formulation obeys these conditions. We analytically show that our calculation reproduces the DGLAP and the ERBL equations in the appropriate limits and that it guarantees the continuity of GPDs. We numerically check that the evolved GPDs fulfil DGLAP and ERBL limits, continuity, and polynomiality. We benchmark our numerical implementation against analytical evolution in conformal space. Finally, we perform a numerical comparison to an existing implementation of GPD evolution finding a general good agreement on the kinematic region accessible to the latter. This work provides a pedagogical description of GPD evolution equations which benefits from a renewed interest as future colliders, such as the electron-ion colliders in the US and in China, are being designed. It also paves the way to the extension of GPD evolution codes to higher accuracies in pQCD desirable for precision phenomenology at these facilities.

The spin-one Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau equation revisited: analytical study of its structure and a careful choice of interaction

Abstract:The Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau equation is investigated for spin one bosons with the so-called natural (normal) and unnatural (abnormal) parity states for non-minimal vector interactions. To illustrate the current state of knowledge about the equation, a thorough but concise discussion is made on what can be achieved analytically within this framework for well-known phenomenological interactions, including Coulomb, soft-core, Cornell, Kratzer, and exponential type interactions. In the non-exponential cases, the equation, depending on the chosen interaction, is studied in relation to the confluent, doubly-confluent, and biconfluent Heun functions. Furthermore, to show the need for careful treatment of various parity states, a Kratzer-type potential, such as a generalized Coulomb interaction, is discussed in depth using the Lie algebraic approach, showing the need for careful analysis of abnormal parity states in a fairly explicit way. The energies obtained are discussed using some figures to explicitly show the different regimes, as well as the absence of the Klein paradox. Finally, some directions for future work that would undoubtedly need to be explored in this field are discussed.

Analytic Evolution of DGLAP Equations

Abstract:We present an analytical method to solve the leading order (LO) Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations, which describe how parton distribution functions (PDFs) vary through different energy scales. Our approach utilizes the analytical technique that was previously employed to address the evolution of singular distribution amplitudes. The method is straightforward, mathematically transparent, and requires very little computational power. The approach involves assuming that the PDF can be expanded into a series of terms, which follow a recursion relation that we derive. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, we utilize a toy model of PDF at initial scale. We initiate with a reasonable approximation of the experimentally calculated PDF and demonstrate that our approach yields the asymptotic behavior of the PDF.

Abstract:We study the small- x evolution equation for the gluon generalized parton distribution Eg of the nucleon. It is shown that Eg at vanishing skewness exhibits the Regge behavior identical to the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov pomeron despite its association with nucleon helicity-flip processes. We also consider the effect of gluon saturation and demonstrate that Eg gets saturated in the same way as its helicity-nonflip counterpart Hg . An Elementary Canonical Classical and Quantum Dynamics for General Relativity

Abstract:A consistent canonical classical and quantum dynamics in the framework of special relativity was formulated by Stueckelberg in 1941, and generalized to many body theory by Horwitz and Piron in 1973 (SHP). In this paper, this theory is embedded into the framework of general relativity (GR), here denoted by SHPGR. The canonical Poisson brackets of the SHP theory remain valid (invariant under local coordinate transformations) on the manifold of GR , and provide the basis for formulating a canonical quantum theory; the result (here defined as SHPGR) is generalized to many-body theory. A scalar product is defined for constructing the Hilbert space and a Hermitian momentum operator defined. The Fourier transform is defined, connecting momentum and coordinate representations. The potential which may occur in the SHP theory emerges as a spacetime scalar mass distribution in GR, and electromagnetism corresponds to a gauge field on the quantum mechanical GR Hilbert space in both the single particle and many-body theory. A diffeomorphism covariant form of Newton's law is found as an immediate consequence of the canonical formulation of SHPGR. We compute the classical evolution of the off shell mass on the orbit of a particle and the force on a particle and its energy at the Schwarzschild horizon. The propagator for evolution of the one body state is studied and a scattering theory on the manifold is worked out.

A semi-analytical $x$-space solution for parton evolution -- Application to non-singlet and singlet DGLAP equation

Abstract:We present a novel semi-analytical method for parton evolution. It is based on constructing a family of analytic functions spanning $x$-space which is closed under the considered evolution equation. Using these functions as a basis, the original integro-differential evolution equation transforms into a system of coupled ordinary differential equations, which can be solved numerically by restriction to a suitably chosen finite subsystem. The evolved distributions are obtained as analytic functions in $x$ with numerically obtained coefficients, providing insight into the analytic behavior of the evolved parton distributions. As a proof-of-principle, we apply our method to the leading order non-singlet and singlet DGLAP equation. Comparing our results to traditional Mellin-space methods, we find good agreement. The method is implemented in the code $\texttt{POMPOM}$ in $\texttt{Mathematica}$ as well as in $\texttt{Python}$.

Understanding parton evolution in matter from renormalization group analysis

Abstract:We perform a renormalization group (RG) analysis of collinear hadron production in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei. We consider the limit where the parent parton energy $E$ is large, while the medium opacity $L/\lambda_g$ remains small. We identify the fixed order and leading $\ln(E/\xi^2 L)$ enhanced medium contributions to the semi-inclusive cross sections and derive RG equations that resum multiple emissions near the endpoints of the splitting functions at first order in opacity. These evolution equations treat the same type of radiation enhancement in matter as the modified Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi approach, but differ in the way one regulates the collinear divergences. They provide a unique analytic insight into the problem of resummation and a faster and more efficient path to phenomenology. The new RG evolution framework is applied to study fragmentation in $e$A reactions.

Abstract:A brief review about the Newman-Penrose formalism and the asymptotic structure of the spacetime is given. The goal of this review is to describe the latest developments in these topics and make a summary of the most important articles published by Newman and collaborators. Additionally, we discuss some aspects of this approach, and we compute the spin coefficients and the Weyl scalars for a general stationary axisymmetric spacetimes in a tetrad basis different from that defined by the principal null geodesic directions.

Abstract:We express the Hamiltonian of the quantum trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland model related to the Lie algebra $D_4$ in terms of a set of Weyl-invariant variables, namely, the characters of the fundamental representations of the Lie algebra. This parametrization allows us to solve for the energy eigenfunctions of the theory and to study properties of the system of orthogonal polynomials associated to them such as recurrence relations and generating functions.

Kinetic equations for systems with long-range interactions: a unified description

Abstract:We complete the existing literature on the kinetic theory of systems with long-range interactions. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, or using projection operator technics or a quasilinear theory, a general kinetic equation can be derived when collective effects are neglected. This equation (which is not well-known) applies to possibly spatially inhomogeneous systems, which is specific to systems with long-range interactions. Interestingly, the structure of this kinetic equation bears a clear physical meaning in terms of generalized Kubo relations. Furthermore, this equation takes a very similar form for stellar systems and two-dimensional point vortices providing therefore a unified description of the kinetic theory of these systems. If we assume that the system is spatially homogeneous (or axisymmetric for point vortices), this equation can be simplified and reduces to the Landau equation (or its counterpart for point vortices). Our formalism thus offers a simple derivation of Landau-type equations. We also use this general formalism to derive a kinetic equation, written in angle-action variables, describing spatially inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions. This new derivation solves the shortcomings of our previous derivation [P.H. Chavanis, Physica A 377, 469 (2007)]. Finally, we consider a test particle approach and derive general expressions for the diffusion and friction (or drift) coefficients of a test particle evolving in a bath of field particles. We make contact with the expressions previously obtained in the literature. As an application of the kinetic theory, we argue that the relaxation time is shorter for inhomogeneous (or high-dimensional) systems than for homogeneous (or low-dimensional) systems because there are potentially more resonances.

Abstract:We construct a general effective dynamics for diffeomorphisms of spacetime, in a fixed external metric. Though related to familiar models of scalar fields as coordinates, our models have subtly different properties, both at kinematical and dynamical level. The energy-momentum tensor consists of two independently conserved parts. The background solution is the identity diffeomorphism and the energy-momentum tensor of this solution gives rise to an effective cosmological constant.

Abstract:We revisit the evolution of generalized parton distributions at the leading order in the strong coupling constant αs for all of the twist-2 quark and gluon operators. We rederive the relevant one-loop evolution kernels, expressing them in a form suitable for implementation, and check analytically that some basic properties, such as Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi/Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage limits and polynomiality conservation, are fulfilled. A new approach to color-coherent parton evolution

Abstract:We present a simple parton-shower model that replaces the explicit angular ordering of the coherent branching formalism with a differentially accurate simulation of soft-gluon radiation by means of a non-trivial dependence on azimuthal angles. We introduce a global kinematics mapping and provide an analytic proof that it satisfies the criteria for next-to leading logarithmic accuracy. In the new algorithm, initial and final state evolution are treated on the same footing. We provide an implementation for final-state evolution in the numerical code Alaric and present a first comparison to experimental data.

Abstract:The theoretical treatment of jet quenching lacks a full description of the interplay between vacuum-like emissions, usually formulated in momentum space, and medium induced ones that demand an interface with a space-time picture of the expanding medium and thus must be formulated in position space. In this work we build a toy Monte-Carlo parton shower ordered in formation time, virtual mass, and opening angle, which are equivalent at leading logarithmic accuracy. Aiming to explore a link with jet substructure, we compute the Lund plane distributions for the different ordering prescriptions. Further, we investigate the sensitivity of ordering prescriptions to medium effects by counting the number of events eliminated by a decoherence condition.

Abstract:The emergence of parton model from field theory in the context of light-front current algebra and naive canonical manipulations is reviewed. Shortcomings of the naive canonical picture, especially concerning renormalization issues are discussed. To illustrate the novel aspects of the renormalization problem in light-front dynamics, the scaling behavior of different components of currents under the dual power counting is stressed. It is noted that the application of dual power counting to deep inelastic phenomena may provide a simple intuitive understanding of twist.
