Abstract:Preclones are described as the closed classes of the Galois connection induced by a preservation relation between operations and matrix collections. The Galois closed classes of matrix collections are also described by explicit closure conditions.

Abstract:We consider $S$-operations $f \colon A^{n} \to A$ in which each argument is assigned a signum $s \in S$ representing a "property" such as being order-preserving or order-reversing with respect to a fixed partial order on $A$. The set $S$ of such properties is assumed to have a monoid structure reflecting the behaviour of these properties under the composition of $S$-operations (e.g., order-reversing composed with order-reversing is order-preserving). The collection of all $S$-operations with prescribed properties for their signed arguments is not a clone (since it is not closed under arbitrary identification of arguments), but it is a preclone with special properties, which leads to the notion of $S$-preclone. We introduce $S$-relations $\varrho = (\varrho_{s})_{s \in S}$, $S$-relational clones, and a preservation property ($f \mathrel{\stackrel{S}{\triangleright}} \varrho$), and we consider the induced Galois connection ${}^S\mathrm{Pol}$-${}^S\mathrm{Inv}$. The $S$-preclones and $S$-relational clones turn out to be exactly the closed sets of this Galois connection. We also establish some basic facts about the structure of the lattice of all $S$-preclones on $A$.

Abstract:We give a proof of I. G. Rosenberg's characterization of maximal clones. The theorem lists six types of relations on a finite set such that a clone over this set is maximal if and only if it contains just the functions preserving one of the relations of the list. In Universal Algebra, this translates immediately into a characterization of the finite preprimal algebras: A finite algebra is preprimal if and only if its term operations are exactly the functions preserving a relation of one of the six types listed in the theorem. The difficult part of the proof is to show that all maximal clones or preprimal algebras respectively are of that form. This follows from, and, as we also demonstrate, is indeed equivalent to, a characterization of primal algebras: We show that the primal algebras are exactly those whose term operations do not preserve any of the relations on the list.

Abstract:Permutation clones generalise permutation groups and clone theory. We investigate permutation clones defined by relations, or equivalently, the automorphism groups of powers of relations. We find many structural results on the lattice of all relationally defined permutation clones on a finite set. We find all relationally defined permutation clones on two element set. We show that all maximal borrow closed permutation clones are either relationally defined or cancellatively defined. Permutation clones generalise clones to permutations of $A^n$. Emil Jeřábek found the dual structure to be weight mappings $A^k\rightarrow M$ to a commutative monoid, generalising relations. We investigate the case when the dual object is precisely a relation, equivalently, that $M={\mathbb B}$, calling these relationally defined permutation clones. We determine the number of relationally defined permutation clones on two elements (13). We note that many infinite classes of clones collapse when looked at as permutation clones.

Abstract:The main problem of clone theory is to describe the clone lattice for a given basic set. For a two-element basic set this was resolved by E.L. Post, but for at least three-element basic set the full structure of the lattice is still unknown, and the complete description in general is considered to be hopeless. Therefore, it is studied by its substructures and its approximations. One of the possible directions is to examine k -ary parts of the clones and their mutual inclusions. In this paper we study k -ary parts of maximal clones, for building on the already known results for their unary parts. It turns out that the poset of k -ary parts of maximal clones defined by central relations contains long chains.

Multisorted Boolean Clones Determined by Binary Relations up to Minion Homomorphisms

Abstract:We describe the ordering of a class of clones by minion homomorphisms, also known as minor preserving maps or height 1 clone homomorphisms. The class consists of all clones on finite sets determined by binary relations whose projections to both coordinates have at most two elements. This class can be alternatively described up to minion homomorphisms as the class of multisorted Boolean clones determined by binary relations. We also introduce and apply the concept of a minion core which provides canonical representatives for equivalence classes of clones, more generally minions, on finite sets.

Abstract:We develop a new general framework for algebras and clones, called Universal Clone Algebra. Algebras and clones of finitary operations are to Universal Algebra what t-algebras and clone algebras are to Universal Clone Algebra. Clone algebras have been recently introduced to found a one-sorted, purely algebraic theory of clones, while t-algebras are first introduced in this article. We present a method to codify algebras and clones into t-algebras and clone algebras, respectively. We provide concrete examples showing that general results in Universal Clone Algebra, when translated in terms of algebras and clones, give more powerful versions of known theorems in Universal Algebra. We apply this methodology to Birkhoff's HSP theorem and to the recent topological versions of Birkhoff's theorem.

Abstract:We study clones modulo minor homomorphisms, which are mappings from one clone to another preserving arities of operations and respecting permutation and identification of variables. Minor-equivalent clones satisfy the same sets of identities of the form , also known as minor identities, and therefore share many algebraic properties. Moreover, it was proved that the complexity of the of a finite structure only depends on the set of minor identities satisfied by the polymorphism clone of . In this article we consider the poset that arises by considering all clones over a three-element set with the following order: we write if there exists a minor homomorphism from to . We show that the aforementioned poset has only three submaximal elements.

Abstract:Clones of operations of arity (referred to as -operations) have been employed by Neumann to represent varieties of infinitary algebras defined by operations of at most arity . More recently, clone algebras have been introduced to study clones of functions, including -operations, within the framework of one-sorted universal algebra. Additionally, polymorphisms of arity , which are -operations preserving the relations of a given first-order structure, have recently been used to establish model theory results with applications in the field of complexity of CSP problems. In this paper, we undertake a topological and algebraic study of polymorphisms of arity and their corresponding invariant relations. Given a Boolean ideal X on the set , we endow the set of -operations on A with a topology, which we refer to as X -topology. Notably, the topology of pointwise convergence can be retrieved as a special case of this approach. Polymorphisms and invariant relations are then defined parametrically with respect to the X -topology. We characterise the X -closed clones of -operations in terms of - and present a method to relate - to the classical (finitary) - .

Abstract:Expanding on the work of Kemp, Ratliff and Shah, for any closure ${\rm cl}$ defined on a class of modules over a Noetherian ring, we develop the theory of ${\rm cl}$-prereductions of submodules. For any interior ${\rm i}$ on a class of $R$-modules, we also develop the theory of {\rm i}-postexpansions. Using the duality of Epstein, R.G. and Vassilev, we show that if ${\rm i}$ is the interior dual to ${\rm cl}$, then these notions are in fact dual to each other. We consider the ${\rm cl}$-precore (${\rm i}$-postcore), the intersection of all ${\rm cl}$-prereductions ${\rm i}$-postexpansions) of a submodule and the ${\rm cl}$-prehull (${\rm i}$-posthull), the sum of all ${\rm cl}$-prereductions (${\rm i}$-postexpansions) of a submodule and give comparisons with the ${\rm cl}$-core (${\rm i}$-hull). We further give a classification of ${\rm cl}$-prereductions of ${\rm cl}$-closed ideals of a Noetherian ring where ${\rm cl}$ is a closure with a special part.

von Neumann Algebras of Thompson-like Groups from Cloning Systems II

Abstract:Let $(G_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of groups equipped with a $d$-ary cloning system and denote by $\mathscr{T}_d(G_*)$ the resulting Thompson-like group. In previous work joint with Zaremsky, we obtained structural results concerning the group von Neumann algebra of $\mathscr{T}_d(G_*)$, denoted by $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$. Under some natural assumptions on the $d$-ary cloning system, we proved that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ factor. With a few additional natural assumptions, we proved that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is, moreover, a McDuff factor. In this paper, we further analyze the structure of $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, in particular the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, where $F_d$ is the smallest of the Higman--Thompson groups. First, we prove that if the $d$-ary cloning system is "diverse", then the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is irreducible, a considerable improvement of the result that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ factor. This allows us to compute the normalizer of $L(F_d)$ in $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, which turns out to be "trivial" in the diverse case, implying that the inclusion is also singular. Then we prove that the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ satisfies the weak asymptotic homomorphism property, which yields another proof that the inclusion is singular. Finally, we finish the paper with an application: Using irreducibility, our conditions for when $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ McDuff factor, and the fact that $F_d$ is character rigid (in the sense of Peterson), we prove that the groups $F_d$ are McDuff (in the sense of Deprez-Vaes).

Abstract:The fact that the cocommutative comonoids in a symmetric monoidal category form the best possible approximation by a cartesian category is revisited when the original category is only braided monoidal. This leads to the question when the endomorphism operad of a comonoid is a clone (a Lawvere theory). By giving an explicit example, we prove that this does not imply that the comonoid is cocommutative.

Abstract:We study generalizations of pre-Lie algebras, where the free objects are based on rooted trees which edges are typed, instead of usual rooted trees, and with generalized pre-Lie products formed by graftings. Working with a discrete set of types, we show how to obtain such objects when this set is given an associative commutative product and a second product making it a commutative extended semigroup. Working with a vector space of types, these two products are replaced by a bilinear map $\Phi$ which satisfies a braid equation and a commutation relation. Examples of such structures are defined on sets, semigroups, or groups. These constructions define a family of operads PreLie $\Phi$ which generalize the operad of pre-Lie algebras PreLie. For any embedding from PreLie into PreLie $\phi$ , we construct a family of pairs of cointeracting bialgebras, based on typed and decorated trees: the first coproduct is given by an extraction and contraction process, the types being modified by the action of $\Phi$; the second coproduct is given by admissible cuts, in the Connes and Kreimer's way, with again types modified by the action of $\Phi$. We also study the Koszul dual of PreLie $\Phi$ , which gives generalizations of permutative algebras.

Abstract:A clonoid is a set of finitary functions from a set $A$ to a set $B$ that is closed under taking minors. Hence clonoids are generalizations of clones. By a classical result of Post, there are only countably many clones on a 2-element set. In contrast to that, we present continuum many clonoids for $A = B = \{0,1\}$. More generally, for any finite set $A$ and any $2$-element algebra $\mathbf{B}$, we give the cardinality of the set of clonoids from $A$ to $\mathbf{B}$ that are closed under the operations of $\mathbf{B}$.

Central extensions of preordered groups

Abstract:We prove that the category of preordered groups contains two full reflective subcategories that give rise to some interesting Galois theories. The first one is the category of the so-called commutative objects, which are precisely the preordered groups whose group law is commutative. The second one is the category of abelian objects, that turns out to be the category of monomorphisms in the category of abelian groups. We give a precise description of the reflector to this subcategory, and we prove that it induces an admissible Galois structure and then a natural notion of categorical central extension. We then characterize the central extensions of preordered groups in purely algebraic terms: these are shown to be the central extensions of groups having the additional property that their restriction to the positive cones is a special homogeneous surjection of monoids.

Abstract:Clonoids are sets of finitary functions from an algebra $\mathbb{A}$ to an algebra $\mathbb{B}$ that are closed under composition with term functions of $\mathbb{A}$ on the domain side and with term functions of $\mathbb{B}$ on the codomain side. For $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ (polynomially equivalent to) finite modules we show: If $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ have coprime order and the congruence lattice of $\mathbb{A}$ is distributive, then there are only finitely many clonoids from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$. This is proved by establishing for every natural number $k$ a particular linear equation that all $k$-ary functions from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$ satisfy. Else if $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ do not have coprime order, then there exist infinite ascending chains of clonoids from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$ ordered by inclusion. Consequently any extension of $\mathbb{A}$ by $\mathbb{B}$ has countably infinitely many $2$-nilpotent expansions up to term equivalence.

Abstract:Action operads and cloning systems are, respectively, the main ingredients in two approaches for axiomatically constructing Thompson-like groups due to Thumann and Witzel-Zaremsky. In this paper, we prove that action operads are equivalent to cloning systems that admit a certain extra structure, and which we call bilateral cloning systems. In addition, we describe their relation with crossed interval groups and product categories.
