Abstract:In this note we show how one can obtain results from the nabla calculus from results on the delta calculus and vice versa via a duality argument. We provide applications of the main results to the calculus of variations on time scales.

Abstract:In this work we propose a new and more general approach to the calculus of variations on time scales that allows to obtain, as particular cases, both delta and nabla results. More precisely, we pose the problem of minimizing or maximizing the composition of delta and nabla integrals with Lagrangians that involve directional derivatives. Unified Euler-Lagrange necessary optimality conditions, as well as sufficient conditions under appropriate convexity assumptions, are proved. We illustrate presented results with simple examples.

Abstract:We study problems of the calculus of variations and optimal control within the framework of time scales. Specifically, we obtain Euler-Lagrange type equations for both Lagrangians depending on higher order delta derivatives and isoperimetric problems. We also develop some direct methods to solve certain classes of variational problems via dynamic inequalities. In the last chapter we introduce fractional difference operators and propose a new discrete-time fractional calculus of variations. Corresponding Euler-Lagrange and Legendre necessary optimality conditions are derived and some illustrative examples provided.

Abstract:We present here more general concepts of Hausdorff derivatives (structural Nabla derivatives) on a timescale. We examine structural Nabla integration on temporal scales. Using the fixed-point theorem, we establish adequate criteria for the question of existence and uniqueness of the solution to an initial value problem characterized by structural Nabla derivatives on timescales. Furthermore, some features of the new operator are proven and illustrated by using concrete examples.

Abstract:We prove a necessary optimality condition for isoperimetric problems under nabla-differentiable curves. As a consequence, the recent results of [M.R. Caputo, A unified view of ostensibly disparate isoperimetric variational problems, Appl. Math. Lett. (2008), doi:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1016/j.aml.2008.04.004" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aml.2008.04.004" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aml.2008.04.004</a>], that put together seemingly dissimilar optimal control problems in economics and physics, are extended to a generic time scale. We end with an illustrative example of application of our main result to a dynamic optimization problem from economics.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some reversed dynamic inequalities of Hilbert type on time scales nabla calculus by applying reversed Hölder's inequality, chain rule on time scales, and the mean inequality. As particular cases of our results (when and ), we get the reversed form of discrete and continuous inequalities proved by Chang-Jian, Lian-Ying and Cheung ( Math. Slovaca 61(1):15–28, 2011).

Abstract:Through duality, it is possible to transform left fractional operators into right fractional operators and vice versa. In contrast to existing literature, we establish integration by parts formulas that exclusively involve either left or right operators. The emergence of these novel fractional integration by parts formulas inspires the introduction of a new calculus of variations, where only one type of fractional derivative (left or right) is present. This applies to both the problem formulation and the corresponding necessary optimality conditions. As a practical application, we present a new Lagrangian that relies solely on left-hand side fractional derivatives. The fractional variational principle derived from this Lagrangian leads us to the equation of motion for a dissipative/damped system.

Abstract:This paper introduces novel generalizations of dynamic inequalities of Copson type within the framework of time scales delta calculus. The proposed generalizations leverage mathematical tools such as Hölder's inequality, Minkowski's inequality, the chain rule on time scales, and the properties of power rules on time scales. As special cases of our results, particularly when the time scale T equals the real line (T=R), we derive some classical continuous analogs of previous inequalities. Furthermore, when T corresponds to the set of natural numbers including zero (T=N0), the obtained results, to the best of the authors' knowledge, represent innovative contributions to the field.

On delta and nabla Caputo fractional differences and dual identities

Abstract:We Investigate two types of dual identities for Caputo fractional differences. The first type relates nabla and delta type fractional sums and differences. The second type represented by the Q-operator relates left and right fractional sums and differences. Two types of Caputo fractional differences are introduced, one of them (dual one) is defined so that it obeys the investigated dual identities. The relation between Rieamnn and Caputo fractional differences is investigated and the delta and nabla discrete Mittag-Leffler functions are confirmed by solving Caputo type linear fractional difference equations. A nabla integration by parts formula is obtained for Caputo fractional differences as well.

Abstract:Abstract In this article we study the delta invariant of reduced curve germs via topological techniques. We describe an explicit connection between the delta invariant of a curve embedded in a rational singularity and the topological Poincaré series of the ambient surface. This connection is established by using another formula expressing the delta invariant as ‘periodic constants’ of the Poincaré series associated with the abstract curve and a ‘twisted’ duality developed for the Poincaré series of the ambient space.

Abstract:We present the Delta-calculus, an explicitly typed lambda-calculus with strong pairs, projections and explicit type coercions. The calculus can be parametrized with different intersection type theories T, e.g. the Coppo-Dezani, the Coppo-Dezani-Salle', the Coppo-Dezani-Venneri and the Barendregt-Coppo-Dezani ones, producing a family of Delta-calculi with related intersection type systems. We prove the main properties like Church-Rosser, unicity of type, subject reduction, strong normalization, decidability of type checking and type reconstruction. We state the relationship between the intersection type assignment systems a` la Curry and the corresponding intersection type systems a` la Church by means of an essence function translating an explicitly typed Delta-term into a pure lambda-term one. We finally translate a Delta-term with type coercions into an equivalent one without them; the translation is proved to be coherent because its essence is the identity. The generic Delta-calculus can be parametrized to take into account other intersection type theories as the ones in the Barendregt et al. book.

Abstract:Caputo-Fabrizio fractional delta derivatives on an arbitrary time scale are presented. When the time scale is chosen to be the set of real numbers, then the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative is recovered. For isolated or partly continuous and partly discrete, i.e., hybrid time scales, one gets new fractional operators. We concentrate on the behavior of solutions to initial value problems with the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional delta derivative on an arbitrary time scale. In particular, the exponential stability of linear systems is studied. A necessary and sufficient condition for the exponential stability of linear systems with the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional delta derivative on time scales is presented. By considering a suitable fractional dynamic equation and the Laplace transform on time scales, we also propose a proper definition of Caputo-Fabrizio fractional integral on time scales. Finally, by using the Banach fixed point theorem, we prove existence and uniqueness of solution to a nonlinear initial value problem with the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional delta derivative on time scales.

Abstract:We deal with direct and inverse problems of the calculus of variations on arbitrary time scales. Firstly, using the Euler-Lagrange equation and the strengthened Legendre condition, we give a general form for a variational functional to attain a local minimum at a given point of the vector space. Furthermore, we provide a necessary condition for a dynamic integro-differential equation to be an Euler-Lagrange equation (Helmholtz's problem of the calculus of variations on time scales). New and interesting results for the discrete and quantum settings are obtained as particular cases. Finally, we consider very general problems of the calculus of variations given by the composition of a certain scalar function with delta and nabla integrals of a vector valued field.

Abstract:We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min–max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in Bouchitté and Fragalà (C R Math Acad Sci Paris 353(4):375–379, 2015).

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some new dynamic Hardy-type inequalities with negative parameters on time scales nabla calculus by applying the reverse H ölder's inequality, integration by parts, and chain rule on time scales nabla calculus. As special cases of our results (when $ \mathbb{ T = R} $), we get the continuous analouges of inequalities proven by Benaissa and Sarikaya, and when $ \mathbb{T = N}_{0} $, the results to the best of the authors' knowledge are essentially new.

In this paper, we explore some monotonicity rules for quotient of Delta, Nabla and Diamond-Alpha integrals with variable upper limits and parameters on time scales, respectively. Moreover, we consider the monotonicity rules for quotient of the product of multiple Delta integrals with parameters on time scales. Power series is also concerned for being a special case of integral with parameters on time scales.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to T-duality based on Courant algebroid relations which subsumes the usual T-duality as well as its various generalisations. Starting from a relational description for the reduction of exact Courant algebroids over foliated manifolds, we introduce a weakened notion of generalised isometries that captures the generalised geometry counterpart of Riemannian submersions when applied to transverse generalised metrics. This is used to construct T-dual backgrounds as generalised metrics on reduced Courant algebroids which are related by a generalised isometry. We prove an existence and uniqueness result for generalised isometric exact Courant algebroids coming from reductions. We demonstrate that our construction reproduces standard T-duality relations based on correspondence spaces. We also describe how it applies to generalised T-duality transformations of almost para-Hermitian manifolds.

Space-time duality for fractional diffusion

Abstract:Zolotarev proved a duality result that relates stable densities with different indices. In this paper, we show how Zolotarev duality leads to some interesting results on fractional diffusion. Fractional diffusion equations employ fractional derivatives in place of the usual integer order derivatives. They govern scaling limits of random walk models, with power law jumps leading to fractional derivatives in space, and power law waiting times between the jumps leading to fractional derivatives in time. The limit process is a stable Lévy motion that models the jumps, subordinated to an inverse stable process that models the waiting times. Using duality, we relate the density of a spectrally negative stable process with index $1<\alpha<2$ to the density of the hitting time of a stable subordinator with index $1/\alpha$, and thereby unify some recent results in the literature. These results also provide a concrete interpretation of Zolotarev duality in terms of the fractional diffusion model.
