Abstract:In this paper the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are studied. We give an estimate of the first Betti number of a compact Finsler manifold. Two finiteness theorems for fundamental groups of compact Finsler manifolds are proved. Moreover, the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds with almost-nonnegative Ricci curvature are considered.

Abstract:We present a new method, using asymptotic analysis, to obtain a system of recursion relations for integrals on moduli spaces of curves. By applying the asymptotic analysis on the join-cut relation of the ELSV formula, we derive the recursion relation of R. Dijkgraaf and E. and H. Verlinde, which is exactly the Virasoro constraints for topological gravity. This gives an alternative proof of Wittens Conjecture using asymptotic analysis.

Abstract:We provide the regularity and the Cohen-Macaulay type of binomial edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay cones, and we show the extremal Betti numbers of some classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: Cohen-Macaulay bipartite and fan graphs. In addition, we compute the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the binomial edge ideals of some Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs.

Abstract:We give a new, short proof of a result of Virk, that the Vietoris-Rips complex of the group $\mathbb{Z}^n$ with the standard word metric is contractible at large enough scales. This is inspired by a key observation in Virk's proof, but we use Bestvina-Brady discrete Morse theory to get a very short proof with better bounds. In the course of this, we get a new, general criterion for a metric space to have contractible Vietoris-Rips complexes at large enough scales, which could prove useful in the future.

Abstract:Persistent homology has emerged as a novel tool for data analysis in the past two decades. However, there are still very few shapes or even manifolds whose persistent homology barcodes (say of the Vietoris-Rips complex) are fully known. Towards this direction, let $P_n$ be the boundary of a regular polygon in the plane with $n$ sides; we describe the homotopy types of Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$. Indeed, when $n=(k+1)!!$ is an odd double factorial, we provide a complete characterization of the homotopy types and persistent homology of the Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$ up to a scale parameter $r_n$, where $r_n$ approaches the diameter of $P_n$ as $n\to\infty$. Surprisingly, these homotopy types include spheres of all dimensions. Roughly speaking, the number of higher-dimensional spheres appearing is linked to the number of equilateral (but not necessarily equiangular) stars that can be inscribed into $P_n$. As our main tool we use the recently-developed theory of cyclic graphs and winding fractions. Furthermore, we show that the Vietoris-Rips complex of an arbitrarily dense subset of $P_n$ need not be homotopy equivalent to the Vietoris-Rips complex of $P_n$ itself, and indeed, these two complexes can have different homology groups in arbitrarily high dimensions. As an application of our results, we provide a lower bound on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between $P_n$ and the circle.
On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:We examine the homotopy types of Vietoris–Rips complexes on certain finite metric spaces at scale 2. We consider the collections of subsets of equipped with symmetric difference metric d , specifically, , , , and . Here is the collection of size n subsets of [ m ] and is the collection of subsets where is a total order on the collections of subsets of [ m ] and (see the definition of in Sect. 1). We prove that the Vietoris–Rips complexes and are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of 's; also, the complexes and are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of 's. We provide inductive formulae for these homotopy types extending the result of Barmak about the independence complexes of Kneser graphs KG and the result of Adamaszek and Adams about Vietoris–Rips complexes of hypercube graphs with scale 2.

Abstract:For $X$ a metric space and $r>0$ a scale parameter, the Vietoris-Rips complex $VR_<(X;r)$ (resp. $VR_\leq(X;r)$) has $X$ as its vertex set, and a finite subset $\sigma\subseteq X$ as a simplex whenever the diameter of $\sigma$ is less than $r$ (resp. at most $r$). Though Vietoris-Rips complexes have been studied at small choices of scale by Hausmann and Latschev, they are not well-understood at larger scale parameters. In this paper we investigate the homotopy types of Vietoris-Rips complexes of ellipses $Y=\{(x,y)\in \mathbb{R}^2~|~(x/a)^2+y^2=1\}$ of small eccentricity, meaning $1<a\le\sqrt{2}$. Indeed, we show there are constants $r_1 < r_2$ such that for all $r_1 < r< r_2$, we have $VR_<(X;r)\simeq S^2$ and $VR_\leq(X;r)\simeq \bigvee^5 S^2$, though only one of the two-spheres in $VR_\leq(X;r)$ is persistent. Furthermore, we show that for any scale parameter $r_1 < r < r_2$, there are arbitrarily dense subsets of the ellipse such that the Vietoris-Rips complex of the subset is not homotopy equivalent to the Vietoris-Rips complex of the entire ellipse. As our main tool we link these homotopy types to the structure of infinite cyclic graphs.

On $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips complexes

Abstract:We study the concepts of the $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips simplicial set and the $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips complex of a metric space, where $1\leq p \leq \infty.$ This theory unifies two established theories: for $p=\infty,$ this is the classical theory of Vietoris-Rips complexes, and for $p=1,$ this corresponds to the blurred magnitude homology theory. We prove several results that are known for the Vietoris-Rips complex in the general case: (1) we prove a stability theorem for the corresponding version of the persistent homology; (2) we show that, for a compact Riemannian manifold and a sufficiently small scale parameter, all the "$\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips spaces" are homotopy equivalent to the manifold; (3) we demonstrate that the $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips spaces are invariant (up to homotopy) under taking the metric completion. Additionally, we show that the limit of the homology groups of the $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips spaces, as the scale parameter tends to zero, does not depend on $p$; and that the homology groups of the $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips spaces commute with filtered colimits of metric spaces.

Abstract:A Vietoris–Rips complex R is the clique complex of a proximity graph. This graph can arise from a finite set of points in Euclidean n-space, and then there is a natural projection onto its n-dimensional shadow; p : R æ S. An article by Chambers et al.[Cha+10] demonstrates that p induces an isomorphism of fundamental groups for n = 1, 2, while the induced homomorphism fails to be surjective for n Ø 4. In the case of n = 3, neither injectivity nor surjectivity are known. The existing proof of surjectivity for n = 2 proceeds by lifting paths from S to R. In this report we propose a new proof of surjectivity for n = 2. We proceed by induction on the vertex set, thus we examine the geometry of the shadow in the neighborhood of a single vertex. At this vertex we can make decompositions of R and S to apply the Seifert–van Kampen theorem. This yields a diagram of fundamental groups, from which surjectivity follows by a category-theoretic argument.

Vietoris-Rips Complexes of Split-Decomposable Spaces

Abstract:Split-metric decompositions are an important tool in the theory of phylogenetics, particularly because of the link between the tight span and the class of totally decomposable spaces, a generalization of metric trees whose decomposition does not have a ``prime'' component. We use this connection to study the Vietoris-Rips complexes of totally decomposable spaces. In particular, we characterize the homotopy type of the Vietoris-Rips complex of circular decomposable spaces whose metric is monotone. We extend this result to compute the homology of certain non-monotone circular decomposable spaces. We also use the block decomposition of the tight span of a totally decomposable metric to induce a decomposition of the VR complex of a totally decomposable metric.

A New Construction of the Vietoris-Rips Complex

Abstract:We present a new, inductive construction of the Vietoris-Rips complex, in which we take advantage of a small amount of unexploited combinatorial structure in the $k$-skeleton of the complex in order to avoid unnecessary comparisons when identifying its $(k+1)$-simplices. In doing so, we achieve a significant reduction in the number of comparisons required to construct the Vietoris-Rips compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, which is seen here by examining the computational complexity of the critical step in the algorithms. In experiments comparing a C/C++ implementation of our algorithm to the GUDHI v3.9.0 software package, this results in an observed $5$-$10$-fold improvement in speed of on sufficiently sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs with the best advantages as the graphs become sparser, as well as for higher dimensional Vietoris-Rips complexes. We further clarify that the algorithm described in Boissonnat and Maria (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-33090-2_63" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>) for the construction of the Vietoris-Rips complex is exactly the Incremental Algorithm from Zomorodian (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cag.2010.03.007" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>), albeit with the additional requirement that the result be stored in a tree structure, and we explain how these techniques are different from the algorithm presented here.

The Degree-Rips Complexes of an Annulus with Outliers

Abstract:The degree-Rips bifiltration is the most computable of the parameter-free, density-sensitive bifiltrations in topological data analysis. It is known that this construction is stable to small perturbations of the input data, but its robustness to outliers is not well understood. In recent work, Blumberg-Lesnick prove a result in this direction using the Prokhorov distance and homotopy interleavings. Based on experimental evaluation, they argue that a more refined approach is desirable, and suggest the framework of homology inference. Motivated by these experiments, we consider a probability measure that is uniform with high density on an annulus, and uniform with low density on the disc inside the annulus. We compute the degree-Rips complexes of this probability space up to homotopy type, using the Adamaszek-Adams computation of the Vietoris-Rips complexes of the circle. These degree-Rips complexes are the limit objects for the Blumberg-Lesnick experiments. We argue that the homology inference approach has strong explanatory power in this case, and suggest studying the limit objects directly as a strategy for further work.

Abstract:Vietoris-Rips metric thickenings have previously been proposed as an alternate approach to understanding Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes and their persistent homology. Recent work has shown that for totally bounded metric spaces, Vietoris-Rips metric thickenings have persistent homology barcodes that agree with those of Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes, ignoring whether endpoints of bars are open or closed. Combining this result with the known homotopy types and barcodes of the Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes of the circle, the barcodes of the Vietoris-Rips metric thickenings of the circle can be deduced up to endpoints, and conjectures have been made about their homotopy types. We confirm these conjectures are correct, proving that the Vietoris-Rips metric thickenings of the circle are homotopy equivalent to odd-dimensional spheres at the expected scale parameters. Our approach is to find quotients of the metric thickenings that preserve homotopy type and show that the quotient spaces can be described as CW complexes. The quotient maps are also natural with respect to the scale parameter and thus provide a direct proof of the persistent homology of the metric thickenings.

Structural characterizations and Obstructions to Planar-Rips complexes

Abstract:Given a scale parameter $r>0$, the Vietoris-Rips complex of $X \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ (referred to as planar-Rips complex) under the usual Euclidean metric is a (finite) simplicial complex whose simplices are subsets of $X$ with diameter at most $r$. This paper focuses on characterizing the simplicial complexes that can or cannot be realized as planar-Rips complexes. Building on the prior work of Adamszek et al., we classify, up to simplicial isomorphism, all $n$-dimensional pseudomanifolds and weak-pseudomanifolds that admit a planar-Rips structure, and further characterize two-dimensional, pure, and closed planar-Rips complexes. Additionally, the notion of obstructions to planar-Rips complexes has been introduced, laying the groundwork for algorithmic approaches to identifying forbidden planar-Rips structures. We also explore the correlations between planar-Rips complexes and the class of intersection graphs called disk graphs, establishing a natural isomorphism between the two classes. Parallelly, our findings on planar-Rips complexes have been consolidated in terms of unit disk graphs for interested readers, depicting the significance of the topological and algebraic approaches. Several structural and geometric properties of planar-Rips complexes have been derived that are of independent interest.
