Abstract:We develop a Hamiltonian formalism of brane-world gravity, which singles out two preferred, mutually orthogonal directions. One is a unit twist-free field of spatial vectors with integral lines intersecting perpendicularly the brane. The other is a temporal vector field with respect to which we perform the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. The gravitational variables arise from the projections of the spatial metric and their canonically conjugated momenta as tensorial, vectorial and scalar quantities defined on the family of hypersurfaces containing the brane. They represent the gravitons, a gravi-photon and a gravi-scalar, respectively. From the action we derive the canonical evolution equations and the constraints for these gravitational degrees of freedom both on the brane and outside it. By integrating across the brane, the dynamics also generates the tensorial and scalar projection of the Lanczos equation. The vectorial projection of the Lanczos equation arises in a similar way from the diffeomorphism constraint. Both the graviton and the gravi-scalar are continuous across the brane, however the momentum of the gravi-vector has a jump, related to the energy transport (heat flow) on the brane.

Abstract:A survey is given of the formulation of a $\sigma$-model describing an open string moving in general target space background fields and coupling to both a matrix-valued D-brane position and a matrix-valued gauge field on the D-brane. The equations of motion for the D-brane and the gauge field are derived from the conformal invariance condition on the string world sheet in lowest order of $\ap$. The ordering problem of the involved matrices is solved. In addition to our previous work we discuss a conflict between the classical T-duality rules and renormalization. The calculation of the RG $\beta$-functions does not yield the mass term obtained by formal application of these rules in the case of target space separated D-brane copies.

Abstract:We continue our study of solitons in noncommutative gauge theories and present an extremely simple BPS solution of = 4 U(1) noncommutative gauge theory in 4 dimensions, which describes N infinite D1-strings that pierce a D3-brane at various points, in the presence of a background B-field in the Seiberg-Witten α'→0 limit. We call this solution the N-fluxon. For N = 1 we calculate the complete spectrum of small fluctuations about the fluxon and find three kinds of modes: the fluctuations of the superstring in 10 dimensions arising from fundamental strings attached to the D1 strings, the ordinary particles of the gauge theory in 4 dimensions and a set of states with discrete spectrum, localized at the intersection point - corresponding to fundamental strings stretched between the D1-string and the D3-brane. We discuss the fluctuations about the N-fluxon as well and derive explicit expressions for the amplitudes of interactions between these various modes. We show that translations in noncommutative gauge theories are equivalent to gauge transformations (plus a constant shift of the gauge field) and discuss the implications for the translational zero modes of our solitons. We also find the dyonic versions of N-fluxon, as well as of our previous string-monopole solution.

Abstract:We consider the scaling solutions of Smoluchowski's equation of irreversible aggregation, for a non gelling collision kernel. The scaling mass distribution f(s) diverges as s^{-tau} when s->0. tau is non trivial and could, until now, only be computed by numerical simulations. We develop here new general methods to obtain exact bounds and good approximations of $\tau$. For the specific kernel KdD(x,y)=(x^{1/D}+y^{1/D})^d, describing a mean-field model of particles moving in d dimensions and aggregating with conservation of ``mass'' s=R^D (R is the particle radius), perturbative and nonperturbative expansions are derived. For a general kernel, we find exact inequalities for tau and develop a variational approximation which is used to carry out the first systematic study of tau(d,D) for KdD. The agreement is excellent both with the expansions we derived and with existing numerical values. Finally, we discuss a possible application to 2d decaying turbulence.

Abstract:We generalize the ideas and formalism of two-time physics from particle dynamics to some specific examples of string and p-brane (p≥1) dynamics. The two-time string or p-brane action can be gauge fixed to produce various one-time string or p-brane actions that are dual to each other under gauge transformations. We discuss the particular gauges that correspond to tensionless strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, rigid strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, and tensionless strings and p-branes propagating in the AdSd−n×Sn backgrounds.

Abstract:String theory is the most promising candidate for the theory unifying all interactions including gravity. It has an extremely difficult dynamics. Therefore, it is useful to study some its simplifications. One of them is non-critical string theory which can be defined in low dimensions. A particular interesting case is 2D string theory. On the one hand, it has a very rich structure and, on the other hand, it is solvable. A complete solution of 2D string theory in the simplest linear dilaton background was obtained using its representation as Matrix Quantum Mechanics. This matrix model provides a very powerful technique and reveals the integrability hidden in the usual CFT formulation. This thesis extends the matrix model description of 2D string theory to non-trivial backgrounds. We show how perturbations changing the background are incorporated into Matrix Quantum Mechanics. The perturbations are integrable and governed by Toda Lattice hierarchy. This integrability is used to extract various information about the perturbed system: correlation functions, thermodynamical behaviour, structure of the target space. The results concerning these and some other issues, like non-perturbative effects in non-critical string theory, are presented in the thesis.

Abstract:Using the Schwarzschild-type coordinates in stead of the global ones we reconstruct the classical rotating closed string solutions in the AdS*5 x S*5 backgrounds. They are explicitly described by the Jacobi elliptic and trigonometrical functions of worldsheet coordinates. We study the orbiting closed string configurations in the near-horizon geometries of Dp, NS1 and NS5 branes, and derive the energy and spin of them, whose relation takes a simple form for short strings. Specially in the D5 and NS5 backgrounds we have a linear relation that the energy of the point-like string is proportional to the spin, which is associated with the spectrum of strings in the pp-wave geometries obtained by taking a special Penrose limit on the D5 and NS5 backgrounds.

Abstract:We discuss T-duality for open strings in general background fields both in the functional integral formulation as well as in the language of canonical transformations. The Dirichlet boundary condition in the dual theory has to be treated as a constraint on the functional integration. Furthermore, we give meaning to the notion of matrix valued string end point position in the presence of nonabelian gauge field background.

Abstract:We study dynamics of Type IIB bound-state of a Dirichlet string and n fundamental strings in the background of N fundamental strings. Because of supergravity potential, the bound-state string is pulled to the background fundamental strings, whose motion is described by open string rolling radion field. The string coupling can be made controllably weak and, in the limit $1 << g^2_{\rm st} n << g^2_{\rm st} N$, the bound-state energy involved is small compared to the string scale. We thus propose rolling dynamics of open string radion in this system as an exactly solvable analog for rolling dynamics of open string tachyon in decaying D-brane. The dynamics bears a novel feature that the worldsheet electric field increases monotonically to the critical value as the bound-state string falls into the background string. Close to the background string, D string constituent inside the bound-state string decouples from fundamental string constituents.

Dynamical String Tension Theories with target space scale invariance SSB and restoration

Abstract:The string and brane tensions do not have to be put in by hand, they can be dynamically generated, as in the case when we formulate string and brane theories in the modified measure formalism. Then string and brane tensions appears, but as an additional dynamical degree of freedom . It can be seen however that these string or brane tensions are not universal, but rather each string and each brane generates its own tension, which can have a different value for each string or brane. There should be also a considerable effect for the effective gravity theories derived from these theories. We consider new background fields that can couple to these new types of extended objects, one of them, the tension scalar is capable of changing locally along the world sheet the value of the tension of the extended object. When many strings probing the same region of space are considered this tension scalar is constrained by the requirement of quantum conformal invariance. For the case of two strings probing the same region of space with different dynamically generated tensions, there are two different metrics, associated to the different strings, that have to satisfy vacuum Einsteins equations and the consistency of these two Einsteins equation determines the tension scalar. We also find that the construction of brane world scenarios in the context of these dynamical tension string theories, we discuss avoidance of the Hagedorn temperature possible relaxation of string swampland constraints in dynamical tension string theories, and that the dynamical string theories can bridge between the low and high energy quantum gravity effects, The dynamical modified string theory has target space scale invariance and this target space scale invariance can be restored at the points where the string tension approaches infinity. These models suggest the swampland constraints could be avoided.

Electronic Raman scattering in unconventional density waves

Abstract:We investigate the electronic Raman scattering in pure, quasi-one dimensional conductors with density wave ground state. In particular, we develop the theory of light-scattering on spin and charge density waves, both conventional and unconventional. We calculate the electronic Raman response of the interacting electron system with a single, highly anisotropic conduction band. The calculation is carried out in the mean field approximation. Beside the quasiparticle contribution, the electron-electron interaction is also included on RPA level. The contribution of collective modes and the effect of Coulomb screening are investigated. In analogy with unconventional superconductivity, the obtained Raman spectra - which are finite in the low temperature phase possessing a gap, and vanish identically in the normal state - show unique and strong dependence on the polarization of the incoming and scattered light. We have found distinct, characteristic lineshapes, especially in the unconventional situation, depending on the various scattering geometries and the particular momentum dependence of the density wave order parameter.

Abstract:Using the string field theory recently proposed by the authors and collaborators, we give a background independent formulation of rational noncritical string theories with $c\leq 1$. With a little modification of the string field Hamiltonians previously constructed, we obtain string field theories which include various rational noncritical string theories as classical backgrounds.

Abstract:We study space-time filling unstable D-brane coupled to gravity. We find Hamiltonian for this D-brane and then we implement Brown-Kuchar formalism for this system. We calculate algebra of constraints of deparametrized theory and we show that for large $T$ the Poisson brackets between new constraints are zero. Then we define gauge invariant functions on phase space following deparametrization construction introduced in [9].

Abstract:I discuss various aspects of background independence in the context of string theory, for which so far we have no manifestly background independent formulation. After reviewing the role of background independence in classical Einstein gravity, I discuss recent results implying that there is a conflict in string theory between manifest background independence and manifest duality invariance when higher-derivative corrections are included. The resolution of this conflict requires the introduction of new gauge degrees of freedom together with an enlarged gauge symmetry. This suggests more generally that a manifestly background independent and duality invariant formulation of string theory requires significantly enhanced gauge symmetries.
Non-chaotic dynamics for Yang-Baxter deformed $\text{AdS}_{4}\times \text{CP}^{3}$ superstrings

Abstract:We explore a novel class of Yang-Baxter deformed AdS$_{4}$ $\times$ CP$^{3}$ backgrounds [Jour. High Ener. Phys. \textbf{01} (2021) 056] which exhibit a non-chaotic dynamics for (super)strings propagating over it. We explicitly use the \textit{Kovacic's algorithm} in order to establish non-chaotic dynamics of string $ \sigma $ models over these deformed backgrounds. This analysis is complemented with numerical techniques whereby we probe the classical phase space of these (semi)classical strings and calculate various chaos indicators, such as, the Poincaré sections and the Lyapunov exponents. We find compatibility between the two approaches. Nevertheless, our analysis does not ensure integrability; rather, it excludes the possibility of non-integrability for the given string embeddings.
