Abstract:We introduce a method for analyzing the complexity of natural language processing tasks, and for predicting the difficulty new NLP tasks. Our complexity measures are derived from the Kolmogorov complexity of a class of automata --- {\it meaning automata}, whose purpose is to extract relevant pieces of information from sentences. Natural language semantics is defined only relative to the set of questions an automaton can answer. The paper shows examples of complexity estimates for various NLP programs and tasks, and some recipes for complexity management. It positions natural language processing as a subdomain of software engineering, and lays down its formal foundation.

Abstract:Some possibilities of the author’s approach to the problem of nonintegrability of multidimensional systems related to the splitting of multidimensional separatrices and branching of solutions in the complex domain are discussed, using the example of the problem of the motion of a spherical pendulum with a suspension point performing small spatial periodic oscillations. Previous results are briefly reproduced and their generalizations are discussed, which are based on the calculation of a perturbation of the linear part of the Poincaré map at a hyperbolic point. We have succeeded in obtaining weaker conditions of nonintegrability, since this perturbation, generally speaking, violates the scalar nature of the restrictions of the linear part of the map to its two-dimensional expanding and contracting invariant subspaces. However, these conditions are expressed in terms of some repeated integrals because one must work in the second order of the perturbation theory. It is shown that in the case where the acceleration of the suspension point is represented by a function of complex time uni-valued over punctured vicinities of some isolated singularities, the nonintegrability conditions can be reduced to very simple ones in terms of certain local quantities associated with these singularities. The approach developed can be useful in problems where an unperturbed system possesses a symmetry leading to a degeneration, like the scalar nature of the restrictions of the linear part of the Poincaré map to its invariant subspaces.

Abstract:This article is a contribution to the classification of quadratically integrable systems with vector potentials whose integrals are of the nonstandard, nonseparable type. We focus on generalized parabolic cylindrical case, related to non-subgroup-type coordinates. We find three new systems, two with magnetic fields polynomial in Cartesian coordinates and one with unbounded exponential terms. The limit in the parameters of the integrals yields a new parabolic cylindrical system; the limit of vanishing magnetic fields leads to the free motion. This confirms the conjecture that non-subgroup type integrals can be related to separable systems only in a trivial manner.

Abstract:The spectral method for building first integrals of ordinary linear differential systems is elaborated. Using this method, we obtain bases of first integrals for linear differential systems with constant coefficients, for linear nonautonomous differential systems integrable in closed form (algebraic reducible systems, triangular systems, the Lappo-Danilevskii systems), and for reducible ordinary differential systems with respect to various transformation groups.
On a class of three-dimensional integrable Lagrangians

Abstract:We characterize non-degenerate Lagrangians of the form $ \int f(u_x, u_y, u_t) dx dy dt $ such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations $ (f_{u_x})_x+ (f_{u_y})_y+ (f_{u_t})_t=0 $ are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. The integrability conditions constitute an over-determined system of fourth order PDEs for the Lagrangian density $f$, which is in involution and possess interesting differential-geometric properties. The moduli space of integrable Lagrangians, factorized by the action of a natural equivalence group, is three-dimensional. Familiar examples include the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and the Boyer-Finley Lagrangians, $f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t$ and $f=u_x^2+u_y^2-2e^{u_t}$, respectively. A complete description of integrable cubic and quartic Lagrangians is obtained. Up to the equivalence transformations, the list of integrable cubic Lagrangians reduces to three examples, $ f=u_xu_yu_t, f=u_x^2u_y+u_yu_t, and f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t ({\rm dKP}).$ There exists a unique integrable quartic Lagrangian, $ f=u_x^4+2u_x^2u_t-u_xu_y-u_t^2.$ We conjecture that these examples exhaust the list of integrable polynomial Lagrangians which are essentially three-dimensional (it was verified that there exist no polynomial integrable Lagrangians of degree five). We prove that the Euler-Lagrange equations are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions if and only if they possess a scalar pseudopotential playing the role of a dispersionless `Lax pair'. Abstract:We consider a nine-parameter familiy of 3D quadratic systems, x ̇=x+P2(x,y,z), y ̇=−y+Q2(x,y,z), z ̇=−z+R2(x,y,z), where P2,Q2,R2 are quadratic polynomials, in terms of integrability. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of two independent first integrals of corresponding semi-persistent, weakly persistent, and persistent systems. Unlike some of the earlier works, which primarily focus on planar systems, our research covers three-dimensional spaces, offering new insights into the complex dynamics that are not typically apparent in lower dimensions.

Finite-dimensional reductions and finite-gap type solutions of multicomponent integrable PDEs

Abstract:The main object of the paper is a recently discovered family of multicomponent integrable systems of partial differential equations, whose particular cases include many well-known equations such as the Korteweg--de Vries, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa--Holm, multicomponent Camassa--Holm, Dullin--Gottwald--Holm, and Kaup--Boussinesq equations. We suggest a methodology for constructing a series of solutions for all systems in the family. The crux of the approach lies in reducing this system to a dispersionless integrable system which is a special case of linearly degenerate quasilinear systems actively explored since the 1990s and recently studied in the framework of Nijenhuis geometry. These infinite-dimensional integrable systems are closely connected to certain explicit finite-dimensional integrable systems. We provide a link between solutions of our multicomponent PDE systems and solutions of this finite-dimensional system, and use it to construct animations of multi-component analogous of soliton and cnoidal solutions.

Abstract:Some of the most important classes of surfaces in projective 3-space are reviewed: these are isothermally asymptotic surfaces, projectively applicable surfaces, surfaces of Jonas, projectively minimal surfaces, etc. It is demonstrated that the corresponding projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations reduce to integrable systems which are quite familiar from the modern soliton theory and coincide with the stationary flows in the Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies, equations of the Toda lattice, etc. The corresponding Lax pairs can be obtained by inserting a spectral parameter in the equations of the Wilczynski moving frame.

Abstract:We study linear systems of ordinary differential equations of an arbitrary order on a finite interval with the most general (generic) inhomogeneous boundary conditions in Sobolev spaces. We investigate the character of solvability of inhomogeneous boundary-value problems, prove their Fredholm properties, and find the indices, the dimensions of the kernel, and the cokernel of these problems. Moreover, we obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for continuity in a parameter of solutions to the introduced problems in Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we construct nonlinear partial differential equations in more than 3 independent variables, possessing a manifold of analytic solutions with high, but not full, dimensionality. For this reason we call them ``partially integrable''. Such a construction is achieved using a suitable modification of the classical dressing scheme, consisting in assuming that the kernel of the basic integral operator of the dressing formalism be nontrivial. This new hypothesis leads to the construction of: 1) a linear system of compatible spectral problems for the solution $U(\lambda;x)$ of the integral equation in 3 independent variables each (while the usual dressing method generates spectral problems in 1 or 2 dimensions); 2) a system of nonlinear partial differential equations in $n$ dimensions ($n>3$), possessing a manifold of analytic solutions of dimension ($n-2$), which includes one largely arbitrary relation among the fields. These nonlinear equations can also contain an arbitrary forcing.

Abstract:The problem of finding the first integrals of the Newton equations in the -dimensional Euclidean space is reduced to that of finding two integrals of motion on the Lie algebra which are invariant under rotation symmetry fields. As an example, we obtain several families of integrable and superintegrable systems with first, second, and fourth-degree integrals of motion in the momenta. The corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation does not admit separation variables in any of the known curvilinear orthogonal coordinate systems in the Euclidean space.

Cylindrical extensions of critical Sobolev type inequalities and identities

Abstract:In this paper we investigate cylindrical extensions of critical Sobolev type (improved Hardy) inequalities and identities in the style of Badiale-Tarantello \cite{BT02}, which in a special case give a critical Hardy inequality and its stability results. We also obtain higher order identities, which interestingly include well-known numbers like double factorial, Oblong numbers and Stirling numbers of second kind. All functional identities are obtained in $L^{p}$ for $p\in (1,\infty)$ without the real-valued function assumption, which give a simple and direct understanding of the corresponding inequalities as well as the nonexistence of nontrivial extremizers. As applications, we obtain Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type inequalities with logarithmic weights, which in a particular case give the critical case of the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl type uncertainty principle. We also discuss these results in the setting of Folland and Stein's homogeneous Lie groups. A special focus is devoted to stratified Lie groups, where Sobolev type inequalities become intricately intertwined with the properties of sub-Laplacians and more general subelliptic partial differential equations. The obtained results are already new even in the classical Euclidean setting with respect to the range of parameters and the arbitrariness of the choice of any homogeneous quasi-norm. Most inequalities are obtained with sharp constants.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some results on integrable Hamiltonian systems with two coordinate variables. We revisit the much-studied problem of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and discuss its (super)integrability in the light of a canonical transformation which can map the anisotropic oscillator to a corresponding isotropic one. Following this, we discuss the computation of first integrals for integrable two-dimensional systems using the framework of the Jacobi last multiplier. Using the latter, we describe some novel physical examples, namely, the classical Landau problem with a scalar-potential-induced hyperbolic mode, the two-dimensional Kepler problem, and a problem involving a linear curl force.

Abstract:We consider the nonholonomic systems of $n$ homogeneous balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$ with the same radius $r$ that are rolling without slipping about a fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ with center $O$ and radius $R$. In addition, it is assumed that a dynamically nonsymmetric sphere $\mathbf S$ with the center that coincides with the center $O$ of the fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ rolls without slipping in contact to the moving balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$. The problem is considered in four different configurations. We derive the equations of motion and prove that these systems possess an invariant measure. As the main result, for $n=1$ we found two cases that are integrable in quadratures according to the Euler-Jacobi theorem. The obtained integrable nonholonomic models are natural extensions of the well-known Chaplygin ball integrable problems. Further, we explicitly integrate the planar problem consisting of $n$ homogeneous balls of the same radius, but with different masses, that roll without slipping over a fixed plane $\Sigma_0$ with a plane $\Sigma$ that moves without slipping over these balls.

Abstract:Given two tensor fields of type (1,1) on a smooth n-dimensional manifold M, such that all their Frölicher-Nijenhuis brackets vanish, the algebra of differential forms on M becomes a bi-differential graded algebra. As a consequence, there are partial differential equation (PDE) systems associated with it, which arise as the integrability condition of a system of linear equations and possess a binary Darboux transformation to generate exact solutions. We recover chiral models and potential forms of the self-dual Yang-Mills, as well as corresponding generalizations to higher than four dimensions, and obtain new integrable non-autonomous nonlinear matrix PDEs and corresponding systems.

Abstract:Cylindrically symmetric quantum mechanical systems with position dependent masses (PDM) admitting at least one second order integral of motion are classified. It is proved that there exist 68 such systems which are inequivalent. Among them there are twenty seven superintegrable and twelve maximally superintegrable. The arbitrary elements of the correspondinding Hamiltonians (i.e.,masses and potentials) are presented explicitly.
