Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate Yau's rigidity problem for compact submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in pinched Riemannian manifolds. Firstly, we prove that if M-n is an oriented closed minimal submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional complete simply connected Riemannian manifold Nn(+p), then there exists a constant delta(0)(n, p) is an element of (0, 1) such that if the sectional curvature of N satisfies (K) over bar (N) is an element of[delta(0)(n, p), 1], and if M has a lower bound for the sectional curvature and an upper bound for the normalized scalar curvature, then N is isometric to Sn+p. Moreover, M is either a totally geodesic sphere, one of the Clifford minimal hypersurfaces S-k(root k/n) x S-n (k)(root n-k/n) in Sn+1 for k = 1,..., n-1, or the Veronese submanifold in Sn+d, where d = 1/2n(n + 1) - 1. We then generalize the above theorem to the case where M ia a compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in a pinched Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the unit sphere $S^{n+p}$. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form of M, respectively. Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:Large scale properties of Riemannian manifolds, in particular, those properties preserved by quasi-isometries, can be studied using discrete structures which approximate the manifolds. In a sequence of papers, M. Kanai proved that, under mild conditions, many properties are preserved by a certain (quasi-isometric) graph approximation of a manifold. One of these properties is p -parabolicity. A manifold M (respectively, a graph G ) is said to be p -parabolic if all positive p -superharmonic functions on M (resp. G ) are constant. This is equivalent to not having p -Green's function (i.e. a positive fundamental solution of the p -Laplace-Beltrami operator). Herein we study directly the p -parabolicity on graphs. We obtain some characterizations in terms of graph decompositions. Also, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a uniform hyperbolic graph to be p -parabolic in terms of its boundary at infinity. Finally, we prove that if a uniform hyperbolic graph satisfies the (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality, then it is non- p -parabolic for every \(1

Abstract:A rigidity theorem for oriented complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in a complete and simply connected Riemannian (n + p)-dimensional manifold N n+p with negative sectional curvature is proved. For given positive integers n(≥ 2), p and for a constant H satisfying H > 1 there exists a negative number τ(n, p, H) ∈ (−1,0) with the property that if the sectional curvature of N is pinched in [−1, τ(n, p, H)], and if the squared length of the second fundamental form is in a certain interval, then N n+p is isometric to the hyperbolic space H n+p(−1). As a consequence, this submanifold M is congruent to S n (1/$\sqrt {H^2 - 1} $) or the Veronese surface in S 4(1/$\sqrt {H^2 - 1} $).

Abstract:A complete manifold is said to be nonparabolic if it does admit a positive Green’s function. To find a sharp geometric criterion for the parabolicity/nonparbolicity is an attractive question inside the function theory on Riemannian manifolds. This paper devotes to proving a criterion for nonparabolicity of a complete manifold weakened by the Ricci curvature. For this purpose, we shall apply the new Laplacian comparison theorem established by the first author to show the existence of a non-constant bounded subharmonic function.

Abstract:The aim of this manuscript is to obtain rigidity and non-existence results for parabolic spacelike submanifolds with causal mean curvature vector field in orthogonally splitted spacetimes, and in particular, in globally hyperbolic spacetimes. We also obtain results regarding the geometry of submanifolds by ensuring, under some mild hypothesis, the non-existence of local minima or maxima of certain distinguished function. Furthermore, in this last case the submanifold does not need to be parabolic or even complete.

Abstract:In this note, we investigate the pinching problem for oriented compact submanifolds of dimension n with parallel normalized mean curvature vector in a space form Fn+p(c). We first prove a codimension reduction theorem for submanifolds under lower Ricci curvature bounds. Moreover, if the submanifolds have constant normalized scalar curvature R≥c, we obtain a classification theorem for submanifolds under lower Ricci curvature bounds. It should be emphasized that our Ricci pinching conditions are sharp for even n and p=2.

Abstract:We study the set of curvature functions which a given compact manifold with boundary can possess. First, we prove that the sign demanded by the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem is a necessary and sufficient condition for a given function to be the geodesic curvature or the Gaussian curvature of some conformally equivalent metric. Our approach allows us to solve problems that are impossible to solve in the pointwise conformal case. Moreover, we obtain a deep and more delicate information on pointwise conformal deformations. We prove new existence and nonexistence results for metrics with prescribed curvature in the conformal setting, which depend on the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if $M^n$ is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition $R_0>\sigma_{n}K_{\max}$, where $\sigma_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. This gives a partial answer to Yau's conjecture on pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if $M^n(n\geq3)$ is a compact manifold whose $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition $Ric^{(n-2)}_{\min}>\tau_n(n-2)R_0,$ where $\tau_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker and the authors.
