Abstract:This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Abstract:In this article, we defined a knotted subgroup of a Lie group and considered a geometric notion of equivalence among them. We characterized these knotted subgroups in terms of one-parameter subgroups and provided examples in the case of SU(2) and SU(3). Infinitesimal elements that give rise to knotted subgroups of SU(n) and SO(n) are characterized as well. Canonical forms for their knotted subgroups are presented and their properties are described in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding infinitesimal elements. Finally, knotted subgroups of SL(2,R) are completely classified using direct computation while knotted subgroups of SL(3,R) are completely classified using Jordan canonical forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify the groups of semisimilarities of finite classical polar spaces with exactly two orbits on the singular or isotropic points. As a byproduct, we obtain many highly symmetric regular sets in the point graphs of finite classical polar spaces.

Abstract:We study several explicit finite index subgroups in the known complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups, and show some of them are neat, some of them have positive first Betti number, some of them have a homomorphisms onto a non-Abelian free group. For some lattice triangle groups, we determine the minimal index of a neat subgroup. Finally, we answer a question raised by Stover and describe an infinite tower of neat ball quotients all with a single cusp.

Abstract:We give a description of finite 4-primary groups with disconnected Gruenberg–Kegel graph containing a triangle. As a corollary, finite groups whose Gruenberg–Kegel graph coincides with the Gruenberg–Kegel graph of 3 D 4 (2) are exemplified, which generalizes V. D. Mazurov' description of finite groups isospectral to the group 3 D 4 (2).

Abstract:In this work we will construct bipartite graphs, famously known as Dessin d'enfant, corresponding to finite index subgroups of Hecke triangle groups $(2, q, \infty )$. Then using a results of \cite{ll} we shall show the correspondences among the special polygons, the bi-partite graph, and the tree diagram for a finite index subgroup of the Hecke triangle groups $(2, q, \infty )$.

Abstract:Small Coxeter groups are precisely the ones for which the Tits representation is integral, which makes the study of their congruence subgroups relevant. The symmetric group $S_n$ has three natural extensions, namely, the braid group $B_n$, the twin group $T_n$ and the triplet group $L_n$. The latter two groups are small Coxeter groups, and play the role of braid groups under the Alexander-Markov correspondence for appropriate knot theories, with their pure subgroups admitting suitable hyperplane arrangements as Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. In this paper, we prove that the congruence subgroup property fails for infinite small Coxeter groups which are not virtually abelian. As an application, we deduce that the congruence subgroup property fails for both $T_n$ and $L_n$ when $n \ge 4$. We also determine subquotients of principal congruence subgroups of $T_n$, and identify the pure twin group $PT_n$ and the pure triplet group $PL_n$ with suitable principal congruence subgroups. Further, we investigate crystallographic quotients of these two families of small Coxeter groups, and prove that $T_n /PT_n^{'}$, $T_n/T_n^{''}$ and $L_n /PL_n^{'}$ are crystallographic groups. We also determine crystallographic dimensions of these groups and identify the holonomy representation of $T_n/T_n^{''}$.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Coloring Groups

Abstract:We introduce coloring groups, which are permutation groups obtained from a proper edge coloring of a graph. These groups generalize the generalized toggle groups of Striker (which themselves generalize the toggle groups introduced by Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass). We present some general results connecting the structure of a coloring group to the structure of its graph coloring, providing graph-theoretic characterizations of the centralizer and primitivity of a coloring group. We apply these results particularly to generalized toggle groups arising from trees as well as coloring groups arising from the independence posets introduced by Thomas and Williams.

A family of $2$-groups and an associated family of semisymmetric, locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs

Abstract:A mixed dihedral group is a group $H$ with two disjoint subgroups $X$ and $Y$, each elementary abelian of order $2^n$, such that $H$ is generated by $X\cup Y$, and $H/H'\cong X\times Y$. In this paper, for each $n\geq 2$, we construct a mixed dihedral $2$-group $H$ of nilpotency class $3$ and order $2^a$ where $a=(n^3+n^2+4n)/2$, and a corresponding graph $\Sigma$, which is the clique graph of a Cayley graph of $H$. We prove that $\Sigma$ is semisymmetric, that is, ${\rm Aut}(\Sigma)$ acts transitively on the edges, but intransitively on the vertices, of $\Sigma$. These graphs are the first known semisymmetric graphs constructed from groups that are not $2$-generated (indeed $H$ requires $2n$ generators). Additionally, we prove that $\Sigma$ is locally $2$-arc-transitive, and is a normal cover of the `basic' locally $2$-arc-transitive graph ${\rm K}_{2^n,2^n}$. As such, the construction of this family of graphs contributes to the investigation of normal covers of prime-power order of basic locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs -- the `local' analogue of a question posed by C.~H.~Li.

Abstract:A result of Baumslag and Roseblade states that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two free groups is virtually a direct product of free groups. In this paper we generalise this result to the class of cyclic subgroup separable graphs of groups with free abelian vertex groups and cyclic edge groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two groups in this class is virtually $H$-by-(free abelian), where $H$ is the direct product of two groups in the class. In particular, our result applies to 2-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups and residually finite tubular groups. Furthermore, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of the direct product of two $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:In this paper we classify all Coxeter decompositions of hyperbolic tetrahedra. Using this classification one can find all Coxeter subgroups of the group generated by reflections with respect to the faces of the tetrahedra. The indices of such subgroups easily follow from the classification also.

Abstract:Classical Kleinian groups are discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\C)$ acting on the complex projective line $¶^1$, which actually coincides with the Riemann sphere, with non-empty region of discontinuity. These can also be regarded as the monodromy groups of certain differential equations. These groups have played a major role in many aspects of mathematics for decades, and also in physics. It is thus natural to study discrete subgroups of the projective group $PSL(n,\C)$, $ n > 2$. Surprisingly, this is a branch of mathematics which is in its childhood, and in this article we give an overview of it.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue our study of the class of diagram groups. Simply speaking, a diagram is a labelled plane graph bounded by a pair of paths (the top path and the bottom path). To multiply two diagrams, one simply identifies the top path of one diagram with the bottom path of the other diagram, and removes pairs of "reducible" cells. Each diagram group is determined by an alphabet $X$, containing all possible labels of edges, a set of relations ${\cal R}=\{u_i=v_i\mid i=1,2,... \}$, containing all possible labels of cells, and a word $w$ over $X$ -- the label of the top and bottom paths of diagrams. Diagrams can be considered as 2-dimensional words, and diagram groups can be considered as 2-dimensional analogue of free groups. In our previous paper, we showed that the class of diagram groups contains many interesting groups including the famous R. Thompson group $F$ (it corresponds to the simplest set of relations $\{x=x^2 \}$), closed under direct and free products and some other constructions. In this paper we study mainly subgroups of diagram groups. We show that not every subgroup of a diagram group is itself a diagram group (this answers a question from the previous paper). We prove that every nilpotent subgroup of a diagram group is abelian, every abelian subgroup is free, but even the Thompson group contains solvable subgroups of any degree. We also study distortion of subgroups in diagram groups, including the Thompson group. It turnes out that centralizers of elements and abelian subgroups are always undistorted, but the Thompson group contains distorted soluble subgroups.

Abstract:Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen, and Rubinstein classified tetrahedra all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ into two one-parameter families (a Hill family and a new family) and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra. In this paper, we consider which of them tile space; we show that every member of the Hill family, exactly one member of the new family, and at most $40$ sporadic tetrahedra tile space. As a corollary, we disprove the converse of Debrunner's theorem, showing that not all Dehn invariant zero tetrahedra tile space.

Symmetric colorings of polypolyhedra

Abstract:Polypolyhedra (after R. Lang) are compounds of edge-transitive 1-skeleta. There are 54 topologically different polypolyhedra, and each has icosidodecahedral, cuboctahedral, or tetrahedral symmetry, all are realizable as modular origami models with one module per skeleton edge. Consider a coloring in which each edge of a given component receives a different color, and where the coloring (up to global color permutation) is invariant under the polypolyhedron's symmetry group. On the Five Intersecting Tetrahedra, the edges of each color form visual bands on the model, and correspond to matchings on the dodecahedron graph. We count the number of such colorings and give three proofs. For each of the non-polygon-component polypolyhedra, there is a corresponding matching coloring, and we count the number of these matching colorings. For some of the non-polygon-component polypolyhedra, there is a corresponding visual-band coloring, and we count the number of these band colorings.

Coloring Planar Graphs via Colored Paths in the Associahedra

Abstract:Hassler Whitney's theorem of 1931 reduces the task of finding proper, vertex 4-colorings of triangulations of the 2-sphere to finding such colorings for the class $\mathfrak H$ of triangulations of the 2-sphere that have a Hamiltonian circuit. This has been used by Whitney and others from 1936 to the present to find equivalent reformulations of the 4 Color Theorem (4CT). Recently there has been activity to try to use some of these reformuations to find a shorter proof of the 4CT. Every triangulation in $\mathfrak H$ has a dual graph that is a union of two binary trees with the same number of leaves. Elements of a group known as Thompson's group $F$ are equivalence classes of pairs of binary trees with the same number of leaves. This paper explores this resemblance and finds that some recent reformulations of the 4CT are essentially attempting to color elements of $\mathfrak H$ using expressions of elements of $F$ as words in a certain generating set for $F$. From this, we derive information about not just the colorability of certain elements of $\mathfrak H$, but also about all possible ways to color these elements. Because of this we raise (and answer some) questions about enumeration. We also bring in an extension $E$ of the group $F$ and ask whether certain elements ``parametrize'' the set of all colorings of the elements of $\mathfrak H$ that use all four colors.
