Abstract:We prove upper bounds on the face numbers of simplicial complexes in terms on their girths, in analogy with the Moore bound from graph theory. Our definition of girth generalizes the usual definition for graphs.

Abstract:We derive attainable upper bounds on the algebraic connectivity (spectral gap) of a regular graph in terms of its diameter and girth. This bound agrees with the well‐known Alon–Boppana–Friedman bound for graphs of even diameter, but is an improvement for graphs of odd diameter. For the girth bound, we show that only Moore graphs can attain it, and these only exist for well‐known special cases. For the diameter bound, we use a combination of stochastic algorithms and exhaustive search to find graphs which attain it. For 3‐regular graphs, we find attainable graphs for all diameters D up to and including D=9 (the case of D=10 is open). These graphs are extremely rare and also have high girth; for example, we found exactly 45 distinct cubic graphs on 44 vertices attaining the upper bound when D=7 ; all have girth 8. We also exhibit several infinite families attaining the upper bound with respect to diameter or girth. In particular, when d is a power of prime, we construct a d ‐regular graph having diameter 4 and girth 6 which attains the upper bound with respect to diameter.

Abstract:We derive attainable upper bounds on the algebraic connectivity (spectral gap) of a regular graph in terms of its diameter and girth. Abstract:We show the existence of linear bounds on Wall $\rho$-invariants of PL manifolds, employing a new combinatorial concept of $G$-colored polyhedra. As application, we show that how the number of h-cobordism classes of manifolds simple homotopy equivalent to a lens space with $V$ simplices and the fundamental group of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ grows in $V$. Furthermore we count the number of homotopy lens spaces with bounded geometry in $V$. Similarly, we give new linear bounds on Cheeger-Gromov $\rho$-invariants of PL manifolds endowed with a faithful representation also. A key idea is to construct a cobordism with a linear complexity whose boundary is $\pi_1$-injectively embedded, using relative hyperbolization. As application, we study the complexity theory of high-dimensional lens spaces. Lastly we show the density of $\rho$-invariants over manifolds homotopy equivalent to a given manifold for certain fundamental groups. This implies that the structure set is not finitely generated.

Abstract:We give a survey on the recent results and problems on the face enumeration of flag complexes and flag simplicial spheres, with an emphasis on the characterization of face vectors of flag complexes, several lower-bound type of conjectures including the Charney-Davis conjecture and Gal's conjecture, and the upper bound conjecture for flag spheres and pseudomanifolds.

Abstract:We give new bounds on the cosystolic expansion constants of several families of high dimensional expanders, and the known coboundary expansion constants of order complexes of homogeneous geometric lattices, including the spherical building of $SL_n(F_q)$. The improvement applies to the high dimensional expanders constructed by Lubotzky, Samuels and Vishne, and by Kaufman and Oppenheim. Our new expansion constants do not depend on the degree of the complex nor on its dimension, nor on the group of coefficients. This implies improved bounds on Gromov's topological overlap constant, and on Dinur and Meshulam's cover stability, which may have applications for agreement testing. In comparison, existing bounds decay exponentially with the ambient dimension (for spherical buildings) and in addition decay linearly with the degree (for all known bounded-degree high dimensional expanders). Our results are based on several new techniques: * We develop a new "color-restriction" technique which enables proving dimension-free expansion by restricting a multi-partite complex to small random subsets of its color classes. * We give a new "spectral" proof for Evra and Kaufman's local-to-global theorem, deriving better bounds and getting rid of the dependence on the degree. This theorem bounds the cosystolic expansion of a complex using coboundary expansion and spectral expansion of the links. * We derive absolute bounds on the coboundary expansion of the spherical building (and any order complex of a homogeneous geometric lattice) by constructing a novel family of very short cones.

A simple and sharper proof of the hypergraph Moore bound

Abstract:The hypergraph Moore bound is an elegant statement that characterizes the extremal trade-off between the girth - the number of hyperedges in the smallest cycle or even cover (a subhypergraph with all degrees even) and size - the number of hyperedges in a hypergraph. For graphs (i.e., $2$-uniform hypergraphs), a bound tight up to the leading constant was proven in a classical work of Alon, Hoory and Linial [AHL02]. For hypergraphs of uniformity $k>2$, an appropriate generalization was conjectured by Feige [Fei08]. The conjecture was settled up to an additional $\log^{4k+1} n$ factor in the size in a recent work of Guruswami, Kothari and Manohar [GKM21]. Their argument relies on a connection between the existence of short even covers and the spectrum of a certain randomly signed Kikuchi matrix. Their analysis, especially for the case of odd $k$, is significantly complicated. In this work, we present a substantially simpler and shorter proof of the hypergraph Moore bound. Our key idea is the use of a new reweighted Kikuchi matrix and an edge deletion step that allows us to drop several involved steps in [GKM21]'s analysis such as combinatorial bucketing of rows of the Kikuchi matrix and the use of the Schudy-Sviridenko polynomial concentration. Our simpler proof also obtains tighter parameters: in particular, the argument gives a new proof of the classical Moore bound of [AHL02] with no loss (the proof in [GKM21] loses a $\log^3 n$ factor), and loses only a single logarithmic factor for all $k>2$-uniform hypergraphs. As in [GKM21], our ideas naturally extend to yield a simpler proof of the full trade-off for strongly refuting smoothed instances of constraint satisfaction problems with similarly improved parameters.

Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums and their bounds arising from the discrete diagonal of the n-cube

Abstract:Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums are defined as a generalization of a recent 1-dimensional probability model of Dilcher and Girstmair to a d-dimensional cube. The analysis of the frequency distribution of marked lattice points leads to new formulae in certain special cases, and to new bounds for the classical Dedekind sums. Upper bounds for the generalized Dedekind sums are defined in terms of 1-dimensional moments. In the classical two-dimensional case, the ratio of these sums to their upper bounds are cosines of angles between certain vectors of n-dimensional cones, conjectured to have a largest spacial angle of pi/6.

Transversal numbers of simplicial polytopes, spheres, and pure complexes

Abstract:We prove new upper and lower bounds on transversal numbers of several classes of simplicial complexes. Specifically, we establish an upper bound on the transversal numbers of pure simplicial complexes in terms of the number of vertices and the number of facets, and then provide constructions of pure simplicial complexes whose transversal numbers come close to this bound. We introduce a new family of $d$-dimensional polytopes that could be considered as ''siblings'' of cyclic polytopes and show that the transversal ratios of such odd-dimensional polytopes are $2/5-o(1)$. The previous record for the transversal ratios of $(2k+1)$-polytopes was $1/(k+1)$. Finally, we construct infinite families of $3$-, $4$-, and $5$-dimensional simplicial spheres with transversal ratios converging to $5/8$, $1/2$, and $6/11$, respectively. The previous record was $11/21$, $2/5$, and $1/2$, respectively.

Topological expanders, coarse geometry and thick embeddings of complexes

Abstract:We quantify the topological expansion properties of bounded degree simplicial complexes in terms of a family of sublinear functions, in analogy with the separation profile of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár for classical expansion of bounded degree graphs. We prove that, like the separation profile, these new invariants are monotone under regular maps between complexes satisfying appropriate higher connectivity assumptions. In the dimension $1$ case, we recover the cutwidth profile of Huang-Hume-Kelly-Lam. We also prove the seemingly new result that any $1$-dimensional topological expander necessarily contains a graphical expander. In higher dimensions, we give full calculations of these new invariants for Euclidean spaces, which are natural analogues of waist and width-volume inequalities due to Gromov and Guth respectively. We present several other methods of obtaining upper bounds including naïve (yet useful) direct product and fibring theorems, and show how lower bounds can be obtained via thick embeddings of complexes, in analogy with previous work of Barrett-Hume. Using this, we find lower bounds for $k$-expansion of $(k+1)$-fold horocyclic products of trees, and for rank $k$ symmetric spaces of non-compact type. As a further application, we prove that for every $k\geq 2$ there is no coarse embedding (and more generally, no regular map) from the $k$-fold horocyclic product of $3$-regular trees to either any product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^{k-2}\times H \times D$ where $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the real hyperbolic plane, $H$ is a bounded degree hyperbolic graph and $D$ is a doubling metric space, or to any symmetric space whose non-compact factor has corank (dimension minus rank) is strictly less than $k$.

Quantitative upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres

Abstract:The Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric spaces measures how far the spaces are from being isometric. It has played an important and longstanding role in geometry and shape comparison. More recently, it has been discovered that the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between unit spheres equipped with the geodesic metric has important connections to Borsuk-Ulam theorems and Vietoris-Rips complexes. We develop a discrete framework for obtaining upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres, and provide the first quantitative bounds that apply to spheres of all possible pairs of dimensions. As a special case, we determine the exact Gromov-Hausdorff distance between the circle and any higher-dimensional sphere, and determine the precise asymptotic behavior of the distance from the 2-sphere to the $k$-sphere up to constants.

Abstract:This paper presents new lower bounds for the lattice covering densities of simplices by studying the Degree-Diameter Problem for abelian Cayley digraphs. In particular, it proves that the density of any lattice covering of a tetrahedron is at least $25/18$ and the density of any lattice covering of a four-dimensional simplex is at least $343/264$.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

Better bounds on Grothendieck constants of finite orders

Abstract:Grothendieck constants $K_G(d)$ bound the advantage of $d$-dimensional strategies over $1$-dimensional ones in a specific optimisation task. They have applications ranging from approximation algorithms to quantum nonlocality. However, apart from $d=2$, their values are unknown. Here, we exploit a recent Frank-Wolfe approach to provide good candidates for lower bounding some of these constants. The complete proof relies on solving difficult binary quadratic optimisation problems. For $d\in\{3,4,5\}$, we construct specific rectangular instances that we can solve to certify better bounds than those previously known; by monotonicity, our lower bounds improve on the state of the art for $d\leqslant9$. For $d\in\{4,7,8\}$, we exploit elegant structures to build highly symmetric instances achieving even greater bounds; however, we can only solve them heuristically. We also recall the standard relation with violations of Bell inequalities and elaborate on it to interpret generalised Grothendieck constants $K_G(d\mapsto2)$ as the advantage of complex quantum mechanics over real quantum mechanics. Motivated by this connection, we also improve the bounds on $K_G(d\mapsto2)$.

Abstract:In 2017, Walter Taylor showed that there exist $2$-dimensional simplicial complexes which admit the structure of topological modular lattice but not topological distributive lattice. We give a positive answer to his question as to whether $n$-dimensional simplicial complexes with the same property exist. We do this by giving, for each $n\ge2$, an infinite family of compact simplicial complexes which admit the structure of topological modular lattice but not topological distributive lattice.

Abstract:Radial Moore graphs are approximations of Moore graphs that preserve the distance-preserving spanning tree for its central vertices. One way to classify their resemblance with a Moore graph is the status measure. The status of a graph is defined as the sum of the distances of all pairs of ordered vertices and equals twice the Wiener index. In this paper we study upper bounds for both the maximum number of central vertices and the status of radial Moore graphs. Finally, we present a family of radial Moore graphs of diameter $3$ that is conjectured to have maximum status.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to, and somewhat extend, results of Cheeger, Colding and Tian (Geom. Funct. Anal. 12 (2002) 873–914), which give restrictions on the singular sets that can arise as Gromov‐Hausdorff limits in the presence of integral bounds on the curvature. The foundation of this approach is provided by a rigidity result for flat singular spaces, which has independent interest.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a convex $d$-polytope and $0 \leq k \leq d-1$. In 2023, this author proved the following inequalities, resolving a question of Bárány: \[ \frac{f_k(P)}{f_0(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose k} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose k}\biggr], \qquad \frac{f_k(P)}{f_{d-1}(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose d-k-1} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose d-k-1}\biggr]. \] We show that for any fixed $d$ and $k$, these are the tightest possible linear bounds on $f_k(P)$ in terms of $f_0(P)$ or $f_{d-1}(P)$. We then give a stronger bound on $f_k(P)$ in terms of the Grassmann angle sum $\gamma_k^2(P)$. Finally, we prove an identity relating the face numbers of a polytope with the behavior of its facets under a fixed orthogonal projection of codimension two.
