Abstract:The highly reflective solar radiation of passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) increases heating energy consumption in the cold winter. Inspired by the temperature-adaptive skin color of chameleon, we efficiently combine temperature-adaptive solar absorption and PDRC technology to achieve "warm in winter and cool in summer". The temperature-adaptive radiative cooling coating (TARCC) with color variability is designed and fabricated, achieving 41% visible light regulation capability....

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of existing Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling (PDRC) technologies causing excessive cooling of objects during cold winters, thereby increasing heating energy consumption. Inspired by the chameleon's skin, which changes color with temperature, researchers have developed a Temperature-Adaptive Radiative Cooling Coating (TARCC). This coating can reflect sunlight in summer (with a reflectance of approximately 93% and an atmospheric window emissivity of about 94%), achieving a cooling effect 6.5K below ambient temperature. In winter, the coating turns dark, strongly absorbing solar radiation, making the surface temperature 4.3K higher than the ambient temperature, which is 8.0K higher than traditional PDRC coatings. Compared to existing PDRC coatings, this temperature-adaptive radiative cooling coating can save up to 20% of energy consumption annually in mid-latitude regions and increase the time suitable for human comfort by 55%. Additionally, TARCC is low-cost, easy to prepare, and simple to apply, showing potential in achieving sustainable and comfortable indoor environments.
