Abstract:We consider the many-body dynamics of fermions with Coulomb interaction in a mean-field scaling limit where the kinetic and potential energy are of the same order for large particle numbers. In the considered limit the spatial variation of the mean-field is small. We prove two results about this scaling limit. First, due to the small variation, i.e., small forces, we show that the many-body dynamics can be approximated by the free dynamics with an appropriate phase factor with the optimal error term. Second, we show that the Hartree-Fock dynamics gives a better approximation with a smaller error term. Thus, the Hartree-Fock equations can indeed be derived from the many-body dynamics with Coulomb interaction in a mean-field scaling limit.

Abstract:We give a rigorous derivation of the Hartree equation for the many-body dynamics of pseudo-relativistic Fermi systems at high density $\varrho \gg 1$, on arbitrarily large domains, at zero temperature. With respect to previous works, we show that the many-body evolution can be approximated by the Hartree dynamics locally, proving convergence of the expectation of observables that are supported in regions with fixed volume, independent of $\varrho$. The result applies to initial data describing fermionic systems at equilibrium confined in arbitrarily large domains, under the assumption that a suitable local Weyl-type estimate holds true. The proof relies on the approximation of the initial data through positive temperature quasi-free states, that satisfy strong local semiclassical bounds, which play a key role in controlling the growth of the local excitations of the quasi-free state along the many-body dynamics.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of many-body Fermi systems, for a class of initial data which are close to quasi-free states exhibiting a nonvanishing pairing matrix. We focus on the mean-field scaling, which for fermionic systems is naturally coupled with a semiclassical scaling. Under the assumption that the initial datum enjoys a suitable semiclassical structure, we give a rigorous derivation of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation, a nonlinear effective evolution equation for the one-particle density matrix of the system, as the number of particles goes to infinity. Our result holds for all macroscopic times, and provides bounds for the rate of convergence.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of two-dimensional interacting fermions submitted to a homogeneous transverse magnetic field. We consider a large magnetic field regime, with the gap between Landau levels set to the same order as that of potential energy contributions. Within the mean-field approximation, i.e. starting from Hartree's equation for the first reduced density matrix, we derive a drift equation for the particle density. We use vortex coherent states and the associated Husimi function to define a semi-classical density almost satisfying the limiting equation. We then deduce convergence of the density of the true Hartree solution by a Dobrushin-type stability estimate for the limiting equation.

From many-body quantum dynamics to the Hartree-Fock and Vlasov equations with singular potentials

Abstract:We obtain the combined mean-field and semiclassical limit from the $N$-body Schrödinger equation for fermions interacting via singular potentials. To obtain the result, we first prove the uniformity in Planck's constant $h$ propagation of regularity for solutions to the Hartree$\unicode{x2013}$Fock equation with singular pair interaction potentials of the form $\pm |x-y|^{-a}$, including the Coulomb and gravitational interactions. In the context of mixed states, we use these regularity properties to obtain quantitative estimates on the distance between solutions to the Schrödinger equation and solutions to the Hartree$\unicode{x2013}$Fock and Vlasov equations in Schatten norms. For $a\in(0,1/2)$, we obtain local-in-time results when $N^{-1/2} \ll h \leq N^{-1/3}$. In particular, it leads to the derivation of the Vlasov equation with singular potentials. For $a\in[1/2,1]$, our results hold only on a small time scale, or with an $N$-dependent cutoff.

Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional semi-relativistic Hartree model for fast quantum mechanical particles moving in a self-consistent field. Under appropriate assumptions on the initial density matrix as a (fully) mixed quantum state we prove, using Wigner transformation techniques, that its classical limit yields the well known relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system. The result holds for the case of attractive and repulsive mean-field interaction, with an additional size constraint in the attractive case.

Abstract:We study the mean-field and semiclassical limit of the quantum many-body dynamics with a repulsive $\delta$-type potential $N^{3\beta}V(N^{\beta}x)$ and a Coulomb potential, which leads to a macroscopic fluid equation, the Euler-Poisson equation with pressure. We prove quantitative strong convergence of the quantum mass and momentum densities up to the first blow up time of the limiting equation. The main ingredient is a functional inequality on the $\delta$-type potential for the almost optimal case $\beta\in(0,1)$, for which we give an analysis of the singular correlation structure between particles.

Abstract:We consider the N-body Schrödinger dynamics of bosons in the mean field limit with a bounded pair-interaction potential. According to the previous work \cite{AmNi}, the mean field limit is translated into a semiclassical problem with a small parameter $\epsilon\to 0$, after introducing an $\epsilon$-dependent bosonic quantization. The limit is expressed as a push-forward by a nonlinear flow (e.g. Hartree) of the associated Wigner measures. These object and their basic properties were introduced in \cite{AmNi} in the infinite dimensional setting. The additional result presented here states that the transport by the nonlinear flow holds for rather general class of quantum states in their mean field limit.

On the effective dynamics of Bose-Fermi mixtures

Abstract:In this work, we describe the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a degenerate Fermi gas, at zero temperature. First, we analyze the mean-field approximation of the many-body Schrödinger dynamics and prove emergence of a coupled Hartree-type system of equations. We obtain rigorous error control that yields a non-trivial scaling window in which the approximation is meaningful. Second, starting from this Hartree system, we identify a novel scaling regime in which the fermion distribution behaves semi-clasically, but the boson field remains quantum-mechanical; this is one of the main contributions of the present article. In this regime, the bosons are much lighter and more numerous than the fermions. We then prove convergence to a coupled Vlasov-Hartee system of equations with an explicit convergence rate.

Mean field limits of a class of conservative systems with position-dependent transition rates

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with a class of conservative systems including asymmetric exclusion processes and zero-range processes as examples, where some particles are initially placed on $N$ positions. A particle jumps from a position to another at a rate depending on coordinates of these two positions and numbers of particles on these two positions. We show that the hydrodynamic limit of our model is driven by a nonlinear function-valued ordinary differential equation which is consistent with a mean field analysis. Furthermore, in the case where numbers of particles on all positions are bounded by $\mathcal{K}<+\infty$, we show that the fluctuation of our model is driven by a generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. A crucial step in proofs of our main results is to show that numbers of particles on different positions are approximately independent by utilizing a graphical method.

Abstract:We study the ground state energy of trapped two-dimensional Bose gases with mean-field type interactions. We prove the stability of second kind of the many-body system and the convergence of the ground state energy per particle to that of a non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) energy functional. Notably, we can take the scaling of the interaction to be arbitrarily close to the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling, which is a drastic improvement on the best-known result for systems with attractive interactions. As a consequence of the stability of second kind we also obtain Bose-Einstein condensation for the many-body ground states and dynamics for a much improved range of the diluteness parameter.

Asymptotic stability of a wide class of stationary solutions for the Hartree and Schrödinger equations for infinitely many particles

Abstract:We consider the Hartree and Schrödinger equations describing the time evolution of wave functions of infinitely many interacting fermions in three-dimensional space. These equations can be formulated using density operators, and they have infinitely many stationary solutions. In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of a wide class of stationary solutions. We emphasize that our result includes Fermi gas at zero temperature. This is one of the most important steady states from the physics point of view; however, its asymptotic stability has been left open after Lewin and Sabin first formulated this stability problem and gave significant results in their seminal work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.0604" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.0604">arXiv:1310.0604</a>].

Abstract:The mean field limit with time dependent weights for a 1D singular case, given by the attractive Coulomb interactions, is considered. This extends recent results [1,8] for the case of regular interactions. The approach taken here is based on transferring the kinetic target equation to a Burgers-type equation through the distribution function of the measures. The analysis leading to the stability estimates of the latter equation makes use of Kruzkov entropy type estimates adapted to deal with nonlocal source terms.

Abstract:We shall present a new strategy for handling mean field limits of quantum mechanical systems. The new method is simple and effective. It is simple, because it translates the idea behind the mean field description of a many particle quantum system directly into a mathematical algorithm. It is effective because the strategy yields with lesser effort better results than previously achieved. As an instructional example we treat a simple model for the time dependent Hartree equation which we derive under more general conditions than what has been considered so far. Other mean field scalings leading e.g. to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can also be treated.

Abstract:We study the three-dimensional many-particle quantum dynamics in mean-field setting. We forge together the hierarchy method and the modulated energy method. We prove rigorously that the compressible Euler equation is the limit as the particle number tends to infinity and the Planck’s constant tends to zero. We improve the previous sufficient small time hierarchy argument to any finite time via a new iteration scheme and Strichartz bounds first raised by Klainerman and Machedon in this context. We establish strong and quantitative microscopic to macroscopic convergence of mass and momentum densities up to the 1st blow up time of the limiting Euler equation. We justify that the macroscopic pressure emerges from the space-time averages of microscopic interactions via the Strichartz-type bounds. We have hence found a physical meaning for Strichartz-type bounds.

Abstract:A non-Markovian theory of dissipative many-electron systems in the presence of arbitrary coherent fields is presented. The new formulation is constructed via the second-quantization of a complete second-order quantum dissipation theory followed by the random phase or time-dependent Hartree–Fock approximation for electron–electron correlation. The theory is shown to be of the Fermi–Dirac thermal equilibrium statistics limit if electron–electron correlation is neglected. The key quantity is the reduced single-electron density matrix instead of the reduced density matrix of the system, which leads to the drastic reduction of numerical simulation time. The validity of the dynamic mean-field approximation is tested in a model two-electron spin-conversed system with Ohmic dissipation in the presence of excitation field.

Abstract:We consider non-linear evolution equations arising from mean-field limits of particle systems on discrete spaces. We investigate a notion of curvature bounds for these dynamics based on convexity of the free energy along interpolations in a discrete transportation distance related to the gradient flow structure of the dynamics. This notion extends the one for linear Markov chain dynamics studied by Erbar and Maas. We show that positive curvature bounds entail several functional inequalities controlling the convergence to equilibrium of the dynamics. We establish explicit curvature bounds for several examples of mean-field limits of various classical models from statistical mechanics.

Abstract:Some advantages of the algebraic approach to many body physics, based on resolvent algebras, are illustrated by the simple example of non-interacting bosons which are confined in compact regions with soft boundaries. It is shown that the dynamics of these systems converges to the spatially homogeneous dynamics for increasing regions and particle numbers and a variety of boundary forces. The corresponding correlation functions of thermal equilibrium states also converge in this limit. Depending on the filling of the regions with particles, the limits can either be spatially homogeneous, including the Bose-Einstein condensates, or they become inhomogeneous with varying, but finite local particle densities. In case of this spontaneous breakdown of the spatial symmetry, the presence of condensates can be established by exhibiting temporal correlations over large temporal distances (memory effects).

Abstract:This paper provides a mathematically rigorous foundation for self-consistent mean field theory of the polymeric physics. We study a new model for dynamics of mono-polymer systems. Every polymer is regarded as a string of points which are moving randomly as Brownian motions and under elastic forces. Every two points on the same string or on two different strings also interact under a pairwise potential V. The dynamics of the system is described by a system of N coupled stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). We show that the mean field limit as N → ∞ of the system is a self-consistent McKean-Vlasov type equation, under suitable assumptions on the initial and boundary conditions and regularity of V. We also prove that both the SPDE system of the polymers and the mean field limit equation are well-posed.

Abstract:These notes investigate the time evolution of quantum systems, and in particular the rigorous derivation of effective equations approximating the many-body Schrödinger dynamics in certain physically interesting regimes. The focus is primarily on the derivation of time-dependent effective theories (non-equilibrium question) approximating many-body quantum dynamics. The book is divided into seven sections, the first of which briefly reviews the main properties of many-body quantum systems and their time evolution. Section 2 introduces the mean-field regime for bosonic systems and explains how the many-body dynamics can be approximated in this limit using the Hartree equation. Section 3 presents a method, based on the use of coherent states, for rigorously proving the convergence towards the Hartree dynamics, while the fluctuations around the Hartree equation are considered in Section 4. Section 5 focuses on a discussion of a more subtle regime, in which the many-body evolution can be approximated by means of the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Section 6 addresses fermionic systems (characterized by antisymmetric wave functions); here, the fermionic mean-field regime is naturally linked with a semiclassical regime, and it is proven that the evolution of approximate Slater determinants can be approximated using the nonlinear Hartree-Fock equation. In closing, Section 7 reexamines the same fermionic mean-field regime, but with a focus on mixed quasi-free initial data approximating thermal states at positive temperature.
