Abstract:We study the map associating the cohomology class of an admissible normal function on the product of punctured disks, and give some sufficient conditions for the surjectivity of the map. We also construct some examples such that the map is not surjective.

Abstract:Abstract The mapping class group $\Gamma ^k(N_g)$ of a non-orientable surface with punctures is studied via classical homotopy theory of configuration spaces. In particular, we obtain a non-orientable version of the Birman exact sequence. In the case of ${\mathbb{R}} \textrm{P}^2$, we analyze the Serre spectral sequence of a fiber bundle $F_k({\mathbb{R}}{\textrm{P}}^{2}) / \Sigma _k \to X_k \to BSO(3)$ where $X_k$ is a $K(\Gamma ^k({\mathbb{R}} \textrm{P}^2),1)$ and $F_k({\mathbb{R}}{\textrm{P}}^{2}) / \Sigma _k$ denotes the configuration space of unordered $k$-tuples of distinct points in ${\mathbb{R}} \textrm{P}^2$. As a consequence, we express the mod-2 cohomology of $\Gamma ^k({\mathbb{R}} \textrm{P}^2)$ in terms of that of $F_k({\mathbb{R}}{\textrm{P}}^{2}) / \Sigma _k$.
Generalized maps between diffeological spaces

Abstract:By utilizing the idea of Colombeau's generalized function, we introduce a notion of asymptotic map between arbitrary diffeological spaces. The category consisting of diffeological spaces and asymptotic maps is enriched over the category of diffeological spaces, and inherits completeness and cocompleteness. In particular, the set of asymptotic functions on a Euclidean open set include Schwartz distributions and form a Colombeau type smooth differential algebra over Robinson's field of asymptotic numbers. To illustrate the usefulness of our machinery, we show that homotopy extension property can be established for smooth relative cell complexes if we exploit asymptotic maps instead of smooth ones.

Abstract:This paper explores the cup and cap products within the cohomology and homology groups of ample groupoids, focusing on their applications and fundamental properties. Ample groupoids, which are étale groupoids with a totally disconnected unit space, play a crucial role in the study of topological dynamical systems and operator algebras. We introduce the cup product, which defines a bilinear map on cohomology classes, providing a graded ring structure, and the cap product, which defines a bilinear map relating homology and cohomology. The paper aims to make these concepts accessible to a broader mathematical audience, offering clear definitions and detailed explanations. We also demonstrate an application of the cap product in the analysis of automorphisms of groupoid $C^*$-algebras. Specifically, we show how it helps determine the asymptotic innerness of automorphisms. Our results include the first explicit computations of cup products in the cohomology of tiling spaces, which may pave the way for new research in this area.

Abstract:For a pair $(G,N)$ of a group $G$ and its normal subgroup $N$, we consider the space of quasimorphisms and quasi-cocycles on $N$ non-extendable to $G$. To treat this space, we establish the five-term exact sequence of cohomology relative to the bounded subcomplex. As its application, we study the spaces associated with the kernel of the (volume) flux homomorphism, the IA-automorphism group of a free group, and certain normal subgroups of Gromov-hyperbolic groups. Furthermore, we employ this space to prove that the stable commutator length is equivalent to the stable mixed commutator length for certain pairs of a group and its normal subgroup.

Cohomology of spaces of Hopf equivariant maps of spheres

Abstract:For any natural numbers $k \leq n$, the rational cohomology ring of the space of continuous maps $S^{2k-1} \to S^{2n-1}$ (respectively, $S^{4k-1} \to S^{4n-1}$) equivariant under the Hopf action of the circle (respectively, of the group $S^3$ of unit quaternions) is naturally isomorphic to that of the Stiefel manifold $V_k({\mathbb C}^n)$ (respectively, $V_k({\mathbb H}^n)$). The natural maps of integral cohomology groups of these spaces of equivariant maps to cohomology of Stiefel manifolds are surjective but not injective.

Abstract:Abstract We generalise a theorem of Gersten on surjectivity of the restriction map in $$\ell ^{\infty }$$ l ∞ -cohomology of groups. This leads to applications on subgroups of hyperbolic groups, quasi-isometric distinction of finitely generated groups and $$\ell ^{\infty }$$ l ∞ -cohomology calculations for some well-known classes of groups. Along the way, we obtain hyperbolicity criteria for groups of type $$FP_2({{\mathbb {Q}}})$$ F P 2 ( Q ) and for those satisfying a rational homological linear isoperimetric inequality, answering a question of Arora and Martínez-Pedroza.

On cohomology of locally profinite sets

Abstract:We construct a locally profinite set of cardinality $\aleph_{\omega}$ with infinitely many first cohomology classes of which any distinct finite product does not vanish. Building on this, we construct the first example of a nondescendable faithfully flat map between commutative rings of cardinality $\aleph_{\omega}$ within Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory.

Abstract:Let C be a smooth compact Riemann surface holomorphically embedded in a non-singular complex surface M with the unitary flat line bundle . We give a sufficient condition for the existence on a holomorphic tubular neighborhood of C in M . Our sufficient condition is described by an arithmetical condition of in which can be regarded as an analogue of the Brjuno condition for irrational numbers which appears in the theory of 1-variable complex dynamics.

Abstract:We define and study the regularity of distance maps on geodesically complete spaces with curvature bounded above. We prove that such a regular map is locally a Hurewicz fibration. This regularity can be regarded as a dual concept of Perelman's regularity in the geometry of Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below. As a corollary we obtain a sphere theorem for geodesically complete CAT(1) spaces.

Abstract:We prove that the groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are boundedly acyclic, in all regularities. This is the first full computation of the bounded cohomology of a transformation group that is not compactly supported, and it implies that many characteristic classes of flat $\mathbb{R}^n$- and $S^n$-bundles are unbounded. We obtain the same result for the group of homeomorphisms of the disc that restrict to the identity on the boundary, and for the homeomorphism group of the non-compact Cantor set. In the appendix, Alexander Kupers proves a controlled version of the annulus theorem which we use to study the bounded cohomology of the homeomorphism group of the discs.

Abstract:In order to work with non-Nagata rings which are Nagata "up-to-completely-decomposed-universal-homeomorphism", specifically finite rank hensel valuation rings, we introduce the notions of pseudo-integral closure and pseudo-normalisation. We use this notion to give a much more direct and shorter proof that $H^n_{cdh}(X, F) = H^n_{ldh}(X, F)$ for homotopy sheaves $F$ of modules over the $\mathbb{Z}_{(l)}$-linear motivic Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum. This comparison is an alternative to the first half of the authors volume Astérisque 391, whose main theorem is a cdh-descent result for Voevodsky motives. The motivating new insight is really accepting that Voevodsky's motivic cohomology (with $\mathbb{Z}[1/p]$-coefficients) is invariant not just for nilpotent thickenings, but for all universal homeomorphisms.

Abstract:We give a construction of non-ordinary $p$-adic families of classes in the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces associated to spherical pairs of reductive groups. In the étale case, we show how to map these classes into Galois cohomology. The methods developed in this paper can be used to give new constructions of $p$-adic families of Euler systems and $p$-adic $L$-functions. As an example, we show how the constructions of this paper can be used to construct norm-compatible classes associated to non-ordinary Siegel modular forms, generalising $p$-part of the Lemma--Flach Euler system constructed by Loeffler--Skinner--Zerbes.

Abstract:We categorify the inclusion–exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero this conjecture was previously established by Aumonier via topological methods.

Representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$

Abstract:The moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$ pointed stable curves of genus $0$ admits an action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by permuting the marked points. We provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-action on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. This is achieved by studying wall crossings of the moduli spaces of quasimaps which provide us with a new inductive construction of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, equivariant with respect to the symmetric group action. Moreover we prove that $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for $k\le 3$ and $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})\oplus H^{2k-2}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for any $k$ are permutation representations. Our method works for related moduli spaces as well and we provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-representation on the cohomology of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification $\mathbb{P}^1[n]$ of the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and more generally on the cohomology of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^{m-1},1)$ of stable maps.

Abstract:Let $\nu=(n_1,\ldots, n_s), s\ge 2,$ be a sequence of positive integers and let $n=\sum_{1\le j\le s}n_j$. Let $\mathbb CG(\nu)=U(n)/(U(n_1)\times \cdots\times U(n_s))$ be the complex flag manifold. Denote by $P(m,\nu)=P(\mathbb S^m,\mathbb CG(\nu))$ the generalized Dold manifold $\mathbb S^m\times \mathbb CG(\nu)/\langle \theta\rangle $ where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$ with $\alpha:\mathbb S^m\to \mathbb S^m$ being the antipodal map and $\sigma:\mathbb CG(\nu)\to \mathbb CG(\nu)$, the complex conjugation. The manifold $P(m,\nu)$ has the structure of a smooth $\mathbb CG(\nu)$-bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb RP^m.$ We determine the additive structure of $H^*(P(m,\nu);R)$ when $R=\mathbb Z$ and its ring structure when $R$ is a commutative ring in which $2$ is invertible. As an application, we determine the additive structure of $K(P(m,\nu))$ almost completely and also obtain partial results on its ring structure. The results for the singular homology are obtained for generalized Dold spaces $P(S,X)=S\times X/\langle \theta\rangle$, where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$, $\alpha:S\to S$ is a fixed point free involution and $\sigma:X\to X$ is an involution with $\mathrm{Fix}(\sigma)\ne \emptyset,$ for a much wider class of spaces $S$ and $X$.

On operadic open-closed maps in characteristic $p$

Abstract:Consider a closed monotone symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$. \cite{Gan2} constructed a cyclic open-closed map, which goes from the cyclic homology of the Fukaya category of $M$ to the $S^1$-equivariant quantum cohomology of $M$. In this paper, we show that with mod $p$ coefficients, Ganatra's cyclic open-closed map is compatible with a certain $\mathbb{Z}/p$-equivariant open-closed map under the natural $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin type comparison map for Hochschild homology. Along with the proof, this paper gives a new homotopy theoretic framework for studying open-closed maps in symplectic topology. These will be used in an upcoming work \cite{Che} to study mod $p$ equivariant enumerative invariants such as the Quantum Steenrod operations. The main insights of this paper are: 1) a $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Gysin comparison result for ($\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$-) cyclic objects, 2) a new construction of the open-closed map using operadic Floer theory of \cite{AGV}, which gives rise to a new interpretation of its `$S^1$-equivariant' property, and 3) comparison of the new construction with its classical counterpart.

Abstract:Colmez, Dospinescu and Niziol have shown that the only $p$-adic representations of $\rm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ appearing in the $p$-adic étale cohomology of the coverings of Drinfeld's half-plane are the $2$-dimensional cuspidal representations (i.e. potentially semi-stable, whose associated Weil-Deligne representation is irreducible) with Hodge-Tate weights $0$ and $1$ and their multiplicities are given by the $p$-adic Langlands correspondence. We generalise this result to arbitrary weights, by considering the $p$-adic étale cohomology with coefficients in the symmetric powers of the universal local system on Drinfeld's tower. A novelty is the appearance of potentially semistable $2$-dimensional non-cristabelian representations, with expected multiplicity. The key point is that the local systems we consider turn out to be particularly simple: they are "isotrivial opers" on a curve. We develop a recipe to compute the proétale cohomology of such a local system using the Hyodo-Kato cohomology of the curve and the de Rham complex of the flat filtered bundle associated to the local system.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. Then there is a map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ between the null-components of the spaces of homomorphism and based maps, which sends a homomorphism to the induced map between classifying spaces. Atiyah and Bott studied this map for $\pi$ a surface group, and showed that it is surjective in rational cohomology. In this paper, we prove that the map $\Theta$ is surjective in rational cohomology for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical group $G$ except for $SO(2n)$, and that it is not surjective for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ with $m\ge 3$ and $G=SO(2n)$ with $n\ge 4$. As an application, we consider the surjectivity of the map $\Theta$ in rational cohomology for $\pi$ a finitely generated nilpotent group. We also consider the dimension of the cokernel of the map $\Theta$ in rational homotopy groups for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical groups $G$ except for $SO(2n)$.

Abstract:We introduce a new cohomology-theoretic method for classifying generic immersed curves in closed compact surfaces by using Gauss codes. This subsumes a result of J.S. Carter on classifying immersed curves in oriented compact surfaces, and provides a criterion for when an immersion is two-colorable. We note an application to twisted virtual link theory.

Abstract:We study various analogues of theorems from PL topology for cubical complexes. In particular, we characterize when two PL homeomorphic cubulations are equivalent by Pachner moves by showing the question to be equivalent to the existence of cobordisms between generic immersions of hypersurfaces.
